Steve is chicken broth (with noodles or not, both options are welcome just like our beloved good Steve and dark Steve), because he cures/lifts you up when you're down and warms you up in the best way, and it's amazingly powerful even in his seeming simplicity ❤️

Curtis is borscht, there's just this complex, earthy, but sweet flavor to him. It's a flavor that once tried stays with you forever and you just crave it in a special way.

Ari is soured rye flour soup, because it's the most filling, creamy soup and has the most delicious sausage in it 😏🤣

Bucky gets tomato soup, because he's just so lovable and delicious and there's never enough of him. Plus it carries that "comfort" trait, just like Bucky.

Andy gives me some sort of beef broth or Italian wedding soup - very domestic, made with heart, based on solid dose of juicy meat.

Lloyd is of course... pumpkin soup! 😂 A little fancy, thick and creamy, with flavor layers in base (not just pumpkin itself) and sprinkled with spice and nuts.

for Ransom my first choice was French onion soup, because he's that kinda fancy, elegant classic, but is also stinky 😆But I think I'm gonna give him wild mushroom soup, because it fits autumnal vibe most of all.

Nick is dill pickle soup (cucumber soup), since he has that slight acidic bite, but is surprisingly smooth and warming.

Jake is cauliflower soup, because it's colorful and a little whacky (at least here we make it with use of many veggies, not only a cauliflower); also delicious and filling and very homey.

A Pair Of Cheeseburgers in Paradise (Bob Floyd x Reader)

Summary: There's always that one place that you and Bob have felt at home and where your best memories have always been made

Notes: I am both ready and definitely not ready for fall, I'm a summer baby and I'm not sorry for it at all (lol).

Labor Day Weekend

It was only the second, or third, day of your little vacation with Bob, but you had never been happier than on that little slice of beach, the smells of the seabreeze and the afternoon sun lingering high above those clear waters. The pelicans were busy hanging out on the dock posts, the palms rustling away while the screech of the seagulls was heard from not too far off.

You and Bob were enjoying yourselves immensely, not needing to worry about work or personal bullshit that tended to get in the way of everything. Your wedding had been just a few days before, the boys sending you both off in style and bidding you farewell at the airport before you had taken off for Florida.

The smell of the charcoal grill on the porch made you hungrier than you had realized but you were laughing a little as Bob tossed on a few thick, homemade burger patties while the little bluetooth on the porch played "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Jimmy, your new feathered friend, was perched on the porch rail, bobbing his head and flapping his blue and yellow wings as though he too were dancing along to the music.

"Hey sweet-pea," Bob said cheerfully as he drew you in and kissed your forehead. "You hungry?"

"Are you really making the burgers?" you chuckled.

"I snuck out to Publix before you were awake to go get the stuff," Bob answered. "The condiments section was a little bare but I grabbed the last bottle of Heinz fifty-seven before anybody else could."

"You making fries with this?"

"Yep," Bob answered. "Those super thin, stringy ones that you like with the seasoning recipe that Javy's dad gave us."

Your mouth was absolutely watering at the thought. You and Bob had traveled to New Orleans once to visit Coyote's family and to try some of the foods that his family had brought up with them from Brazil. You could almost taste the salt and the spices that Felipe had used, the black pepper, garlic, hot cayenne peppers and all the others.

You helped Bob with the rest of the food prep and once the fries were done, you sprinkled them with a healthy dosage of the spice mixture that Coyote had sent you in the mail. As soon as the buns were toasted, everything was plated including the kosher dill pickle wedges and the burgers were put together.

You both sat out at the table on the front porch of the little pink and turquoise beach cottage, laughing and chattering away even as Bob cracked open a cold one and poured it into one of the glasses from the cabinet.

"Look at that, barely any head," he said with a smile.

"Penny should've taken you on as head bartender in that case," you chuckled.

"Yeah but you know me (y/n)," Bob said, setting aside the can. "I'd give Jake nothing but head."

You snorted a little, trying not to choke on the bite of burger you had been chewing, knowing Bob was bound to slip in a dirty joke somewhere along the line. "Bastard!" you said once you had swallowed. "I'm eating here!"

Bob laughed before he took a sip of the summery beer in the glass and dug into his lunch. You couldn't deny that they were the best burgers you had ever had, just a little slice of paradise right in front of you, but you always knew that Bob would be your real paradise and that you would be his, for the rest of your days.

You were dressed in a modest black sheath dress paired with elegant black heels. Your hair was artfully half-pinned up, and you shielded your crystal-blue eyes behind a pair of sunglasses as you stood solemnly at the funeral, which unfolded at the family plot in the south field. By your side, Sean offered his support. As you observed, you saw Jake and his family approach. Gazing at him from behind your sunglasses, you couldn't help but notice the tension in his jaw and the deliberate avoidance of looking your way.

You began wearing the engagement ring after Sean understood your reluctance, knowing you didn't want to risk damaging it while working on the farm.

Father Jacob approached you with a warm smile. "Y/N, it's truly wonderful to see you. It's been quite some time."

"It has, Father," you replied.

He glanced to your right. "And who is this?"

Sean extended his hand. "I'm Sean Fisk, Y/N's fiancé."

Father Jacob's eyebrows lifted in mild surprise as he shook Sean's hand. "Oh," he said and turned back to you. "Y/N. My deepest condolences for you. Your mother was a lovely woman."

"Thank you, Father."

He placed a hand on on your arm. "If you need anything. I'm here."

"Again, thank you, Father."

Father Jacob smiled warmly. "Let's get started, shall we?"

Griff had prepared a splendid buffet for after the funeral, and the house was bustling with people your mother had known. As you selected some vegetables for your plate, a sudden grip on your arm caught you off guard. You turned to find yourself locking eyes with Jake's sister, Leslie.

"Pantry, now," she hissed, her anger palpable as she briskly pulled you into the walk-in pantry and shut the door behind you. She released your arm and fixed you with an intense stare. "Y/N! What the fuck?"

"What?" you feigned innocence.

She pointed a finger at you. "Don't fuck with me! First of all, who's the handsome blond?"

"That would be Sean, my fiancé," you respond as you pick up a carrot from your plate, dip it in some dill dip, and take a bite.

"Since when?"

"About a month ago."

"I take it you didn't learn from Ben a few years ago, huh?"

You looked at her. "He wanted to move."

"He got stationed somewhere else for the Coast Guard. He didn't have a choice."

You continued to eat your carrot.

Leslie rolled her eyes. "And what about Jake?"

"What about him?"

"Good grief, Y/N. Sometimes you can be so oblivious."

"What?"

"Jake is still in love with you. He always has been."

You stared at her, utterly taken aback.

"He never got over what happened. He joined the Navy to prove your dad wrong. That he was and is good enough for you. Why else do you think he turned into an even bigger arrogant jerk than he already was? Like he had something to prove. You're the only one who grounds him. Everyone knows that except for you."

You stood there dumbfounded as the pantry door creaked open, and James entered. "The moment I didn't spot Leslie, I figured," he remarked to both of you, then directed his gaze at you. "Your fiancé is on the lookout for you."

You let out a resigned sigh, glancing up at the ceiling. "Of course he is." You looked back at Leslie. "Where's Jake?"

"Sweety, he left."

"What do you mean he left?"

"He's a pilot. He has his own plane. He left after the funeral."

You sighed again. "Let me get through this funeral first, and then we'll talk later."

"Got it."

You glanced at James. "I better go find my fiancé." You turned and headed towards the pantry door, opening it and stepping out.

James turned to Leslie. "Do you think she'll go through with it this time?"

"She better, because these two are driving me insane. Especially when he comes home searching for her."

"Ten years is more than enough."

Beth has made a lifetime art out of keeping her features neutral. Just another survival trait at her disposal, especially when it comes to Sunday Dinner. She'd used it when they arrived; Jake ever gallantly offering her a ride after a gruelling night shift, and she'd remembered the diner advertisement. She hadn't realised it was all a push after the gentrification of the neighbourhood and she can't help but feel the stone of shame sitting heavy in her belly. She'd hoped that it would be comforting, would be like The Other Place. Not that she knows a whole lot about it; all of them tend to keep certain things close to their vestments. Beads of condensation spiral around the basin of the cup. Fogs it up but can't make frost. Catches the glint of metal, magnifies it for a second, then disappears. Jake's hand is almost as eloquent but a little more forthcoming. She takes a small bite of her Halloumi and zucchini omelette. A flake of mint or dill reaches out toward her croissant. Somewhere in the centre of her chest, a crack begins to form. Being part of a whole, even one as lively and as forward reaching as he is, must be difficult. The confinement of divine appointment ~not something ever asked for and yet still yoked by expectation. Of course, she could just be reading into what he's saying and filtering it through her own internalised anxiety. "Where you want to go. Anywhere. For any reason?"

Movies I watched this Week #108 (Year 3 / Week 4):

Un Flic, Jean-Pierre Melville’s last moody flick, a French Heist Noir. With Alain Delon playing the cop this time instead of the crook, and Catherine Deneuve just showing her beautiful self. A minimalist exercise in style and genre. 4/10.

🍿 His genial first film, Knife in the water, as strong as some of cinema’s best debut features (‘Citizen Kane’, ‘Sex, lies and videotapes’, ‘Badlands’, ‘Breathless’, ‘The Iron Giant’, ‘Margin call’, ‘Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf’, Etc). Co-written by Jerzy Skolimowski (Whose ‘EO’ I just saw last week, and whose complete canon I am going to pursue). A very tense psychological power game with only three players, which surprisingly does not end in violence. A terrific saxophone score. 8/10.

🍿 Venus in Fur, a surprising discovery! Featuring only two characters on an actual Parisian stage, a playwright who looks like a young Polanski, and his real-life wife Emmanuelle Seigner, as an actress who shows up late for an audition. it’s an engaging erotic power-play, a masochistic love story, and it deals with repression, domination, role playing, degradation and cross-dressing. A perfectly-dark subject matter for this brooding director. 9/10.

🍿 For his next number, Polanski directed his wife in another tight two-hander, Based on a True Story, with similar slow-burning psychological threats. This time about a depressed writer who is being befriended by Eva Green, a super obsessive jealous admirer. Co-written with Olivier Assayas, with some inside literary throwaway lines about Amos oz , Cormac McCarthy and Don DeLillo. 6/10.

🍿 First watch: The Pianist. I found the first 1/3 of the film artificial and glossed out in the worst-traditional Hollywood way: Everything was ‘too nice’, and too clean, and not horrible enough. Later in the ghetto and toward the end as Warsaw gets destroyed, it became a bit more “real”, if you can call it that. I can’t stand most movies about the holocaust, because they obviously have to smooth things out, make them palatable. Lanzmann’s ‘Shoah’ was an exception. Coincidentally, I saw it on Friday, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

(Also, how did they shave in the holocaust?...)

🍿 Both ‘The Pianist’ from Warsaw and his Parisian The Tenant were made in English, which made it impossible to take them seriously. The tenant is the last of Polanski’s “Apartment Trilogy”, but it doesn’t compare to ‘Repulsion’ or ‘Rosemary’s Baby’. I can’t remember how original were the themes of sexual guilt, anxiety, cross-dressing and paranoia in 1976, but they surely didn’t age well.

To me, Chinatown is one of the ‘Best films of all time’. It’s like a song I can listen to again and again and again.

The quintessential LA film, the haunting nostalgia to an era that existed only on celluloid. A perfect dark Noir on every level: the perfect screenplay, the masterful sound and score, even the character names are iconic, Lieutenant Lou Escobar, Russ Yelburton, Hollis Mulwray, Noah Cross, Emma Dill. And Jake “Gits” who appears in every scene and gradually being pulled into the tragic mystery together with us, not realizing that he is played for a fool. This film is about duality, (Sister/daughter, money/power, water/drought, the city and the valley) and about ‘Eyes that are Flawed’. Always 10/10.

🍿 I was planning on seeing all of the Polanski movies I haven’t seen yet, but I had to stop after The Fearless Vampire Killers. Good for him for meeting Sharon Tate during the shooting of this lame Central European vampire ‘parody’, but it took me 3 days to finish it, it was so so tedious. 1/10.

If I were to write a new vampire comedy today, I would call it ‘Garlic’.

I plan on taking a deep dive into Takashi Shimura‘s vast portfolio. 🍿

🍿 The pupils, a short by Alice Rohrwacher (who directed some episodes of Elena Ferrante‘s ‘My brilliant Friend’). A somehow-related topic to ‘Friend’, it tells of a group of young girls at a Catholic boarding school during the war, and stars Alice’s sister Alba as the Mother Superior. The day after watching it, I was surprised to read that it was nominated for the 2023 Oscars!

Perfect strangers is a perfectly acceptable drama about a group of middle class friends who meet during an eclipse of the moon for their regular dinner. But this time they decide to play a game, and leave their phones in the middle of the table. It’s dark, dialogue-rich, witty and intelligent. 7/10.

This movie has a completely unique history though: Since 2016, it had been re-made into 24 versions, in 24 countries - I never heard of any other movie like that!

🍿 Genovese next metaphorical film, The Place, from the following year, had one of the most unusual stories I ever saw on film. It all takes place at a small cafe where an ordinary looking man meets with various people, and grants them any wish they have, if they perform an arbitrary task he assign them. Yes, it’s the story of Faust, and yes, apparently is is based on a concept from an earlier Canadian TV-show, but I found it absolutely fascinating. 9/10.

Another nominee for this year’s Oscars, My year of dicks. A feminist animation short about a 15-year-old girl in the early 90′s who is determined to lose her virginity. Explicit, real talk and original about the first sexual experience from a girl’s point of view.

2 award-winners from Finland:

🍿 Grand Prix winner at Cannes, Compartment Number 6 is different: It starts in a claustrophobic, uncomfortable and compact sleeping car train, which a Finnish woman has to share with a gruff and unfriendly Russian miner. This is the first film I ever hoped to see from the bleak, arctic desert of Murmansk. It ends up literally at the edge of the world, with wide and endless frozen landscapes all around. 8/10. 

🍿 The White Reindeer, a 1952 folk horror tale about a Sami woman, wife of a arctic reindeer herder, who turns into a witch in order to make her new husband attracted to her. Not too interesting.

You people, a new rom-com. It started frantically in a upper-middle-class, plugged-in Brentwood synagogue on Yom Kippur with super hipster Jonah Hill’s family that made me wanna throw up. But soon it turned into a super-sweet romance of super-sensitive Jewish Hill who falls for Eddie Murphy’s black daughter, and sometimes-funny update to ‘Guess who’s coming to dinner’ 55 years later. Eventually it fizzled out into a typical Netflix-level sitcom. 3/10.

Israel Beilin’s (Irving Berlin’s) musical Top Hat with Frederick Austerlitz (Fred Astaire) and Virginia Katherine McMath (Ginger Rogers). Wonderful high-society dance numbers (mostly in single-shot) in great rooms with 20 ft. ceilings. (Photo Above). 🍿 Re-watching Pennies from Heaven, a strange and uneven musical soap opera by Herbaert Ross. The musical numbers with Steve Martin,Bernadette Peters and Christopher Walken lip-syncing and dancing in Busby Berkeley-style extravaganza, were marvelous. But the depressing drama about a drifting, amoral and horny sheet music salesman who falls in and out of love with a mousy teacher turned prostitute was appalling. It does re-create (nicely, but for no apparent reason) Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks in one scene, and also uses a scene from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ ‘Follow the fleet’ as background, in another.

Re-watching the revenge flick Law Abiding Citizen with non-actor Gerard Butler. I remembered it as a technologically-sophisticated ‘fight for justice’ story. But no: It was just sadistic entertainment for sadists, which opened with a brutal child-killing and Clockwork Orange rape, and and continued from there. 2/10.
