(Spoiler Warning)
Although Jahī-sama wa Kujikenai is a very fun and cute anime, there is one part of it that makes me lowkey kinda sad. There is multiple instances where Jahy shows signs of trauma, and while these little things are somewhat played for laughs, the other characters around Jahy seems to realize how she is legitimately traumatized by Kyoko’s destruction of the Dark Realm and the aftermath.
Example 1:
In the first episode, while it isn’t exactly about the fall of the Dark Realm, its cause is related to it.
In this clip, we learn that before moving into the apartment, Jahy used to be homeless (due to losing her home in the Dark Realm). While this scene as a whole is funny, it’s a little sad to hear her cry about how she doesn’t want to live in a cardboard box or bathe in a river anymore.
--
Example 2:
(While this isn’t the full scene and doesn’t have all of the things I’m gonna mention, it has most of it)
Jahy’s trauma over the fall of the Dark Realm remains mostly buried until she meets the Magical Girl who destroyed it. Said Magical Girl proceeds to break into her home and tries to steal Jahy’s mana crystal, which reignites Jahy’s trauma and fears.
She tries to throw a water bottle at Magical Girl (who’s name is apparently Kyoko), shouting at her to stay back, and looking pretty afraid of her because she thinks she’s going to hurt her.
Then, when Kyoko asks for the mana crystal, Jahy thinks that she is going to be abandoned and die. She even thinks of this as Kyoko taking away her future. Because to Jahy, this mana crystal is her future. It’s everything to her. It’s basically all she has left.
After Kyoko is arrested, Jahy expresses that she was terrified because she though she was going to die, and that her precious crystal was gonna be taken. Then she begins crying, and after Landlord tucks her back into bed, she asks if the Magical Girl will come back. This was an incredibly distressing experience for Jahy, and even when the scene is being funny, you can still tell that she is afraid and scared of what’s happening. The landlord even picks up on this, and the show doesn’t really make fun of Jahy for reacting the way she does, instead focusing the comedy on the arrest of a magical girl and how realistically Landlord reacted to the situation. This is the first major instance we see of the show acknowledging Jahy’s trauma.
--
Example 3:
After her encounter with Kyoko, Jahy begins to get really anxious and jumpy, and every time she hears a word even remotely similar to ‘magical girl’, she hides or runs, even jumping into a trash can. While I don’t have too much to say about this, it pretty much speaks for itself. She’s very afraid of Kyoko.
Later in the episode, she encounters Kyoko again, and unfortunately, steals Juhy’s bigger mana crystal. This breaks Juhy in a way, because it was a huge loss for her. Jahy had already lost everything when her world was destroyed. This crystal is all she has left of her world. And after so much hard work trying to get that single mana crystal, it was taken from her by the very same person who had taken everything from her in the first place. It’s no wonder she decided to get drunk after that.
--
Example 4:
2 episodes after this, Druj decides to throw a Dark Realm themed party for Juhy because she seemed homesick. They both really seem to enjoy it, and it helps Juhy in some ways. But after getting back to her apartment, Jahy ends up going to bed crying, promising to restore the Dark Realm. Because she misses it more than anything. That’s why she wears that shirt. And it makes me think; we don’t really see Jahy thinking about wanting back her position in the Dark Realm (though she does want that too). She is prideful enough to act like she wants power in any given situation she is in, but she doesn’t focus on power in general. She only really focuses in on the Dark Realm. This episode is a reminder that, at the end of the day, Jahy’s main ambition isn’t power or even really magic, it’s to restore the Dark Realm. To restore her home.
--
Example 5:
Jahy ends up setting a trap in her apartment, and after they clean it up, Landlord asks her about it. Jahy says that it was to prevent the magical girl from coming in, even saying that “you never know when she’s going to come attack me again.” This is concerning, and even makes the Landlord realize that maybe Jahy was more shaken up about the attack than she thought. I found this whole part interesting as a whole, as it shows that Jahy is still afraid of Kyoko coming after her and that she thinks she might get hurt by her. The Landlord, and through her the narrative, actually takes this a bit seriously, as the narrator describes that, though Jahy didn’t know it, Landlord began tightening security measures around the apartment building.
Jahy didn’t feel safe in her own apartment, because her home had been attacked and destroyed before, and she had gotten attacked a second time in her new home by the person who destroyed her first. This person then tried to take everything from her a second time, and so Jahy doesn’t want it to happen again. She is afraid it might happen again.
--
Example 6:
My final example that I could find was in the episode where Landlord moved into Jahy’s apartment. For the most part there are plenty of funny antics, but when Landlord refuses to even talk to her sister, Jahy says this:
“You have a home to go back to! Someone who’s waiting for you! If you lose that, it’ll all be too late!”
Jahy lost her homeworld. Jahy lost almost all her people. And she had always taken it all for granted. She knows, and in this moment, she is speaking straight from the heart.
This sums up all that Jahy has been going through and struggling with. SHe lost her home, and now, her goal is to get it back.
--
So that’s basically my thing on Jahy’s trauma. Hope you found this all interesting. I don’t know how to end this. Bye.
