Hello, middle-aged Nick Carter, wannabe Ron Swanson, and dear Jacob,

Yes, I know I broke cobitment last week, but I'll keep blaming things on post-Covid syndrome as long as it's convenient for me. But I'm back with another message.

Fellow citizens of Theratopia,

Since my self-election a few days ago, I have been thinking about how can I serve you. Like any good politician, I first make empty promises to then later figure out how to deliver on them. During my first 100 days, I would like to address an issue near and dear to my heart: sense of community. And I count on you to assist me in this task.

All jokes aside, this really is something I have been thinking about and was reminded of during episode 182. We are a diverse bunch but we do have a lot of likes in common that go beyond just listening to the same podcast. It would be cool if we could get to know each other on that level too. I feel like the Therapals should have a place of their own and have felt this way for a long time. As much as I appreciate the Scoop community - hell, I literally intend to marry a person I found there -, not every Therapal is part of the ICS crowd. The idea is to create a safe space for casual congregation and support. Not necessarily just to chat, but where we can share useful resources, practices of self-care that might help others, discussions about the episodes, and just get to know the Therapals in general.

Since it’s kind of part of my brand inserting a personal anecdote to illustrate a point, I have a small tale to share. When I was a young teen I used to go to fanfiction meetings. It started when a small group of friends who met via online forums got together in the common area of their apartment complex. This motivated other groups to organize similar meetings with people from the same forum. These few separated gatherings grew until it became one big bunch of weirdos meeting in public spaces. It was basically an LGBTQIA+ picnic of people with different mutual interests that would otherwise never cross paths. At first, the only thing bonding us was the fact that we shipped two band members, but then it became a safe space to make friends from all over town.

Right now the Therapal community feels a bit like those home meetings. Even though we have a lot of interaction on Twitter, the conversation ends up being disjointed simply because of the nature of that social media. I believe we would benefit from some type of forum or online meeting space. The Patreon interface is not great either, Facebook is... well, Facebook. I thought about setting up a Discord server for PodTherapy, which I see a lot of other online communities using successfully, but I don't know if Therapals would be interested. If anyone has other ideas of what we could do as a community, I would appreciate any contribution. You can find me on Twitter and just @ me. (Can you guys retweet me? If the Therapals think I'm talking nonsense, that's fine too, I can just keep pestering Nick and Jim with emails because sometimes I feel lonely with a lot of things to say. → alastor moody was born into a family of aurors and ministry workers, a family guided by duty and patriotism and an intense need to PROTECT others and make the world and magical britain a little more peaceful. he grew up attending ceremonies for medals of honor and orders of merlin and he grew up attending funerals.

→ his parents themselves were rather inspiring aurors and to this day he’ll defend them restlessly, saying that they were bad parents, but good people and great aurors. they believed that the key to survival in the face of danger was to hide, and when alastor was born, they saw no other choice - the couple had too many enemies who might want to harm them and their son. so they packed up and moved to a nearly inhabited island in the highlands

→ you think moody was the og paranoid? his parents were so overzealous they willingly moved into a house in the middle of nowhere. the house they moved in, previously owned by other paranoid moodys had secret tunnels, hidden rooms, hallways that led to nowhere. it was a maze of suspicion

→ isolation fucked him up. as a kid he knew so little of the world but his family, the occasional trips to the ministry (parents always too buried in work and too uninterested to really take him anywhere else) and the handful of muggles in the island. he was very socially stunned when he got to hogwarts and that was really hard to unlearn and in many ways he never really did

→ you know what was a great distraction? stars. alastor loves them so so much. his childhood bedroom had constellations in the ceiling, and the only thing he ever asked for were books and telescopes, better every time, eyes on a bigger more unknown universe than what he knew

→ he is an hufflepuff through and through. loyal to a fault, committed to a fault, hard working to a fault, not for one second did he doubt his place there. was a quidditch beater (ask to be captain twice. invited to go pro too. denied all things - never has wanted any type of leadership position, and he always knew that his future had been picked by him through his name). told slughorn to beat it too. only really cared about astronomy and DADA

PARENTAL DEATH TW:

→ his father died during his sixth year, some big auror mission gone wrong. his mother two years later, some illness not letting her heal from what would have been minor injuries after a mission. he knew he would become an auror, but alastor had made this brilliant plan in his head of leaving the job after only a couple of years ( doing his time ). their deaths meant he had a legacy to uphold. their deaths stopped all plans.

→ hated the isolation so so much that the moment he got out of hogwarts he left the manor behind and hasn't looked back since. moved to the busiest street he could find in muggle london, the kind that doesn’t let you sleep, and honestly thinks he’d go mad without the noise

→ rose through the ranks inside the auror office so quickly, but made a lot of enemies on the way. older aurors felt jealous that a young shot got all the missions they wanted, accused nepotism, or even pity for the fallen moodys. others did not enjoy how much he liked to stretch the limits of the law. nevertheless, he presented results.

→ has this intense interest in dark magic and especially in all objects and artifacts that use dark magic. he doesn’t think about using them, he’s more of a collector?? which means he’s often in shady bars with shady people doing shady deals

→ dude won’t tell you anything about his life unless he really wants to, but he’s so candid? absolutely hates lying, so so blunt

→ dumbledore knew he liked to ignore the law, and that it often got him in trouble. he knew something relentless was inside moody and, by inviting him to the order right from the beginning, he knew he could use that. alastor sees what he’s doing, and highkey respects it? it’s very smart? ‘a dick move but brilliant���. he’s a wild card that will stop at nothing to get the cause all it needs, even if it costs him his soul. moody organises a lot of missions, and has a high rank inside the order - the amount of untrained civilians running around?? stresses him. catch him training as many as he can

→ that’s also something he loves doing, teaching aurors. when he can, he tends to volunteer to help out aurors falling behind of the training program, in risk of being cut from it. he loves teaching so much

→ okay alastor has a plan: once the war is over, he’s gonna stick around for a year or so to help bring everyone in, and then he’s gonna QUIT and go learn about stars !!! and planets !! and then become a teacher !!! we all know how that goes. a year turns into two, and three, and ‘i can’t go now they need me’ which is really a ‘i don’t know what to do if i’m not running or bleeding’ ptsd is not fun

→ he’s?? so hopeful? and the hope is slowly being drained out of him?

→ doesn’t sleep. doesn’t let his wounds properly heal. walks around bruises and battered 90% of the time, and scars are piling up but he’s too busy being intense and hardworking and devoted to the cause. catch him asleep in his offices (bc he def has one in the order hqs fight me)

WANTED CONNECTIONS:

+ star gazing friends. someone who also spends too much time looking up into the darkness. something very passionate and pure

+ an old flame. some relationship from the past that he was most certainly the one to ruin (because he's him)

+ questionable occasional stress-relief hookup. they don't talk about it to anyone else, and just don't talk a lot in general

+ an order rival. someone inside the order who fundamentally disagrees with every decision he makes, and vice versa. moody is quite honest when he disagrees with someone, so definitely not easy to ignore

+ old hogwarts friends !! after a period of adjusting to being around people, he was more open than he is now, less paranoid, joked around, so someone who knew him then

+ i really like the idea of there being various ranks withing the auror career and of aurors fresh out of the academy/training/thing being junior aurors with one specific main auror as their partner for a bit, until they get a bit of the hang of it ?? i feel like it gives some fun connections because it isn't something people PICK so give me alastor's. someone he did not like, someone who was far too different from him, far too opposing approach, and they just hated working with each other so so much

+ all the ministry enemies. you know this dude has many

+ ministry friends !! few, because he's moody, but a couple of people besides his maybe 3 friends that he'd actually go grab lunch with, have real conversations in the hallways and elevators

+ someone he recruited for the order. this is open for a handful of characters because, while moody doesn't do a lot of recruiting because 1) not a charming dude lbr 2) way too high standards, he still has brought in a few people - and he cares about them very deeply, and also sets for them a very high bar

ISTJ Fictional Tropes

Like anything in fiction there are always tropes. This include characters based on their MBTI. Now not all characters that are ISTJ fit into these exact tropes and many fit into multiple as you will note in the examples. The following are major tropes these ISTJ characters have a pattern of falling into and I think they help define their type as a whole in the big picture. Hopefully, this can be almost a quick cheat sheet at times when typing characters. 

Traditional Leader

These characters are what we think of as your typical leader. They are the ones you trust because they stick to their center, what they feel is right. They’re usually fiercely loyal. These leaders are service oriented. They don’t see themselves as in control, but as serving a role, one that would exist without them. One they choose out of some sense of responsibility or duty to uphold. 

Examples: Commander Lexa (The 100), Captain Ray Holt (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Queen Elizabeth II (The Crown), Lord Eddard Stark (Game of Thrones), Stannis Baratheon (Game of Thrones), George Washington (Hamilton: An American Musical), Thorin (The Hobbit), Fergus (Pixar’s Brave), Theodon (The Lord of the Rings), Powhatan (Disney’s Pocahontas), Queen Catherine of Aragon (The Tudors), Kercheck (Disney’s Tarzan), King George (Once Upon a Time), Elsa (Disney’s Frozen and Once Upon a Time), and Rick Grimes (The Walking Dead).

Detective/Inspector

Most of these character actually are cops, detectives, inspectors, but that is not exactly what this means. This trope for the ISTJ involves them being excited by their inferior Ne. They love to solve things methodically with Si-Te, but get excited by solving puzzles and investigating using their Ne. These types are interested in the truth and their duty to reveal the truth. They will often be willing to break the law/rules in order to uncover the truth. Their loyalty is to what their role upholds, not to people please. The ISTJ is self sacrificing and is okay being painted negatively if the result leads to the truth and justice.

Dutiful Soldier

ISTJ characters that fit this trope are often soldiers, however, it isn’t a requirement to be part of this trope. These ISTJs are dedicated to a cause and remain personally connected and loyal to it. They are highly dependable in performing their duty, whatever that role may be. Their tertiary Fi, often influences them morally to be connected to a cause. They work hard and always follow through on a task. This isn’t about following rules created by a system blindly. These character follow a code and if that means breaking the rules to uphold a personal code, they will do it.

This ISTJ is a master of something. They are so focused and will know every fact about their specialization. Whatever they love is part of their identity, it is what defines them and the use of concrete sensing facts is what helps them relate to their interest. When an ISTJ character is dedicated to a passion, no one knows as much as they do about it.

Family-Oriented Center

These characters deeply care for their family (not necessarily genetic) and are often found as the grounding center. They may not seem caring like their ISFJ counterparts, but these ISTJ characters are harsh defenders of their families and are often the character others rely on as a steady constant in their lives. When this steady constant falls, many times the family does as well. They are the foundation of their family unit.

Zealot

The Zealot ISTJ character is often being unwillingly controlled by their inferior Ne. They find the outer world with it’s constant change in meaning separate from their own deep, personal inner meaning is in conflict. They fear change and try to fight it with everything they have. If they admit that the world has this changing meaning outside of themselves they feel everything they believe in is threatened and are unable to cope with such conflict. They refer to their tertiary Fi for comfort and try to morally back their subjective perspective up with subjective judgement. Thereby fueling their own opinion and clinging to their personal identity, unchanging. Many ISTJ villains fall into this trope, but not all are villains. That is important to keep in mind.

The Cynic

The ISTJ cynics are often mistyped because they don’t really believe in anything. They are often misread as ISTP to be honest. But the Cynic ISTJ is indeed, very ISTJ. They are some of the most ultimate realists, not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. They usually have life experiences of pain that has formed their perception of reality. Their dominant Si seeing the facts, not fanciful ideals. Their tertiary Fi not seeing or growing up with that feeling that they or anyone else is a special snowflake. They often are lost, without a cause, not trusting those with big ideals. They see things as they are and nothing more. They are the bluntest ISTJ filled with some of the most ironic humor. They are usually disappointed with their lot in life.
