Update! Plus my Thoughts

((Dec 9th, 2021 - Picture Taken Today!!)) I want to share his experiences because I think, when I was researching this topic for myself, there was not very many people out there who had posted much experience and understood what was going on. I myself am new to understanding cancer, let alone knowing things about medication, the way things work, protocols, times, prognosis. So I want to make this as a bit of a way to continue to share his journey but also help other people who may have just discovered that their cat has Lymphoma.

So the first thing I want to say is that I still do not know Feliks’ FLeV status. This highly contagious and terrible virus is easily vaccinated against and if you have a cat, and that cat lives with other cats, see other cats, goes outside, if your friends have cats... get this vaccine. For cats, AIDS and Leukemia are viral diseases that they can get by licking something they shouldn’t have licked. It can last on surfaces for a long time, too.

Feline Leukemia can cause Lymphoma. This is a cancer of the Lymphatic system and in humans it’s highly treatable, in animals, less so, due to needing to dial back the strength of the medicine since animals will ‘give up hope’ if they are too sick for too many days. Humans, they do give up hope, but you can talk to a human and they will logically understand they have to keep going.

Feliks, as I said, was diagnosed with Mediastinal Lymphoma. This means the Lymph in his chest has developed tumors. Mediastinal area is what keeps your lungs, heart, trachea, etc all nice and secure. If it swells up, it will begin to cause Lymph fluid to drain into the crevices around the heart and lungs (not inside the lungs). This lead to his difficulty breathing.

His first protocol, unfortunately only worked partially. This was a standard CHOP protocol. It looked like the Vincristine had given some relief but the pill he received to take a week later did nothing (Cyclophosphamide). This meant that the tumor improved slightly but seeing as the Cyclophosphamide did not do anything, it meant this protocol would most likely need to be changed. (He did not experience side effects with the Cyclophosphamide but did experience mild stomach upset at Vincristine and lethargy for 2-3 days 5 days after it was administered)

I was really scared, because I love him and he doesn’t want to give up. The vet decided that she was going to do Elspar, this is an enzyme that essentially combats the enzymes that these kind of tumors love to eat. This offered minimal to no relief. We were, on the 6th, supposed to give him a new drug, called CCNU. This is part of a rescue protocol when COP/Chop fails. By the 6th, his breathing was bad, but he was not suffering from low Oxygen and the vet explained that for now, it seems he’s fine, but feels like he has a baby in his chest. She said that he did not have fluid in the lungs, and that it had to be the mass making his breathing so rough. I worried, and said that maybe it is time to put him down. She said, ‘you already paid for the CCNU, he’s fine right now, give it to him, see how he does, and he’ll let you know when it’s time.’ That Monday night and Tuesday he seemed to develop anemia with Pica, common with cancer treatment (low blood cells, lack of iron). Vet said we cannot give him an iron supplement, but by Tuesday night we noticed that his breathing seemed less laboured.  It had gone from about 60 BPM at resting into the high-low 50s. By Wednesday it went into the low 50s-high 40s. It’s safe to say that today I have been checking his BPM and it’s finally in the Normal Range (His is 30, normal is 15-30 per minute while RESTING). His breathing movements seem to have improved dramatically. I’m not sure how long this will last but I’m very happy for him. In fact today he had so much energy he had several instances of short-lived zoomies and engaged in his toys, playing a lot. We started him on CBD oil a few weeks ago and have been using the Pet Wellbeing Life Gold. I do not know how much they are helping or not but it seems at least the CBD is helping him with nausea and appetite and inflamation. He’s also on Prednisolone 5mg Daily.

I just wanted to share this update to help anyone else who’s cat has been diagnosed with this terrible cancer. This is not a surgically removable one and can only be handled with Chemotherapy. Radiation can damage the heart and lungs too easily so it’s not done with the cancer being cased in the chest.

I did not mean to make this a blog like this. As I wanted to just show him growing up and travelling with me. Now we have a change of plans in our lives and we are living with it.

If you have questions or stories you can send me messages or asks, I want to help people not feel as lost as I was when I had taken him for some swollen lymph nodes and gotten told he had very bad cancer. It’s really scary but it becomes easier when you know what to expect and look for. I should say that I do not know how long he will live for, but every good day is a day I didn’t think I’d have with him. He’s so strong, too, to keep going despite having such difficulties. He’s inspirational in a way to me...

How old were you when you realized you like guys getting hurt? 7? 8, maybe? I feel like a lot of what I like in media can be traced back to the shows I watched in elementary school and how my preferences developed.

What was that very first scene you remember which gave you those glorious butterfly feelings? Anyone remember that edutainment show, Book of Virtues? No? Well, there was this scene where the boy character twists his ankle and the girl administers first aid and tiny me was like, “Awesome! Finally a girl saves a boy!”

When and how was it that you realized “Hey, I’m not so messed up in the head!” and that there’s a definition and a community for this sort of thing? Probably around the time I discovered fanfiction and realized, “Oh, there’s a lot of stories I like!” I can’t pinpoint an exact moment, but that must have been where I learned the terminology.

What’s your favorite whump trope?  Fever, kidnapped and tortured, panic attacks, flashbacks, anything that requires comfort from someone else, ideally with cuddling. Quick, magical healing and post trauma care are also great. There always has to be a rescue or a catharsis.  What’s a whump trope you hate? Gore, character death, whump but no rescue, long term illnesses and after affects. I know it’s not very realistic, but I like a happy ending. One minor pet peeve I have is when a caregiver catches the whumpee’s illness. As far as I’m concerned, nothing is ever contagious, because this is happy fun time where everything always ends up fine.

Who’s your favorite whumped character? Hoo boy...Loki, Bucky, Detective Void , Sam Winchester if I feel like dipping into a fandom I’m meh about, Leon from SWSH, Orym, Caleb, Dorian, and Caduceus from Critical Role...There’s probably more, but you get the idea.

Someone please write Detective Void fanfiction, we are sorely lacking fan content. What’s that whumped scene(s) you watched over and over again (we you know you do it and we understand)? Netflix’s Ragnarok has a scene where Laurits is not pregnant and in not labor with the world serpent. 

I. I also have an Mpreg hyperfixation.  Bullet or stab wounds? Whichever, really. Fevers or hypothermia? Fevers, definitely. They’re usually not as serious and can be treated with relatively little stress. For me it’s less about the agony and more about the caregiver giving them affection and TLC.

Emotional or physical? Both. While I’m a sucker for heartbreak, I like minor or at least treatable injury.

Injured and asks for help, or tries to cover it up? How about; tries to cover it up because no one “has time” for them to be sick or hurt, only to have it backfire. Or, they ask for help, but get brushed off, then collapse when it gets too bad to handle alone. 

Lastly, does anybody know about this addiction of yours? I feel like my bestie knows, even though I can’t remember outright saying it. We wrote a lot of stories together and we have similar tastes. Beyond that, I’m sure a few people have figured it out. I don’t know why I enjoy the trope so much. I suspect it’s some insidious combination of maternal instincts and sadism.

US reports surge of kids at SW border, a challenge for Biden (AP) The number of migrant children and families seeking to cross the U.S. southwest border has surged to levels not seen since before the pandemic, a challenge for President Joe Biden. Some are also touted for their anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, and some folks interested in using natural therapies on their dogs believe in using essential oils for wounds and infections, like dog ear infections. The main thing to remember about essential oils is you have to be careful where you buy them – make sure you’re educated about purity, strength and directions for use – and there is very little research that proves its efficacy. Here are two examples: Oregano Oil

Oregano essential oil is used by home-remedy proponents to treat dog ear infections, as it has natural anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. Oregano oil must always be diluted before you apply it. Coconut oil or sweet almond oil are recommended as “carrier oils” to dilute it. While it can be applied directly to the dog’s ears, left for a short time and flushed out, you shouldn’t try to do this at home – always consult with a veterinarian before putting essential oils in your dog’s ear. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is also known for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. It contains chemicals called terpenes that make it effective against bacteria and fungi – but they are also highly toxic to animals. Whether taken orally or through the skin, terpenes are rapidly absorbed by your pet – and the toxic effects can be quite serious. So while tea tree oil can be effective in treating certain infections, the concentrations needed to be effective are higher than what you can actually find in tea tree products (.1% – 1%). We do not recommend the use of tea tree oil to treat dog ear infections. Monistat 7

Monistat 7 is an over-the-counter product commonly used by women to get rid of vaginal yeast infections. It is easily found in drugstores and does not require a prescription. Its active ingredient is miconazole, which is effective in eliminating yeast infections. This active ingredient is also safe for dogs. When used correctly, this topical cream can often clear the yeast infection from your dog’s ears. (NOTE: Be sure you use Monistat, not other products like Vagisil, which are not formulated to eliminate fungus/yeast.) If possible, talk to your vet first before using Monistat on your dog. If given the go-ahead, make sure to mix the Monistat with hydrocortisone cream (half and half) to help relieve any itchiness your dog is experiencing due to the yeast infection. The consistency of the blended mixture will be thick, so add several drop of water to thin it, and carefully squirt the mixture into your dog’s ears using an eye dropper. Use this home remedy for about a week. If the problem doesn’t subside, take your dog to a vet. Hydrogen Peroxide

Some people ask if hydrogen peroxide can help clear out ear mites that cause dog ear infections. They think that the bubbling cleaner will wash the ears, get rid of the mites and prevent or heal the ear infection. But hydrogen peroxide is basically water with an extra oxygen molecule. The oxidation when you use it is what makes it fizz and look like it’s “working.” And, in fact, it does help clean the area by attacking many types of bacteria and suppress the activities of parasites like ear mites – but: It’s caustic and can damage the tender skin in and around your dog’s ear. It doesn’t work on all bacteria – many types are resistant. Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s preventing an infection when it might not be. Most vets believe its toxicity to cells outweighs any benefits of its antibacterial properties. You absolutely don’t want to get it in your dog’s eyes – so administering it to the ears must be done with extreme care. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has antibacterial properties. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory usefulness. That’s why some owners see it as a possible home remedy to reduce the itch, irritation and swelling caused by ear mites. But you’ll need to keep in mind that the lauric acid in coconut oil is great for many things – but it is not a broad-spectrum anti-bacterial agent. It’s possible that it could eliminate the good bacteria that are fighting the bad bacteria causing the ear infection in your dog. And In fact, not much research has been done on the effectiveness of coconut oil for pets. Manuka Honey

Honey is known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. But to help your dog’s ear infection, you have to have the right type and grade of honey. The gooey stuff is classified according to how and where bees get the ingredients to make it. Manuka honey is made from the nectar of a tea tree in New Zealand and the eastern part of Australia. The bees pollinate the native manuka bush, making it a “monofloral” type of honey (meaning the ingredients come from one type of plant). Some studies have been conducted on manuka honey that showed that medical grade honey gel was effective in killing bacteria that causes ear infections in dogs. These studies received funding from the companies producing the gels – so more research needs to be conducted and the evidence of whether it really works is limited. In addition, medical-grade honey is sterilized and prepared like a dressing – so you shouldn’t apply manuka honey that you can buy at the grocery or health-food store to your dog’s ear. Plus another downside – it’s sticky and messy to deal with. There are other products on the market that are easier to apply and require no clean-up. Garlic Oil

Garlic contains allicin, the main property that fights infections. It’s also believed to be effective in getting rid of ear mites. To use it, peel and grind six cloves of garlic in a food processor until it’s like a paste. Then add one tablespoon of olive oil and mix well. Over low heat, warm the mixture and then remove from heat. Cool it completely before using a dropper to put it, drop by drop, into your dog’s ear. White Vinegar

Vinegar has many great properties and has been used a home remedy for many medical problems for years. Many people like to use it to treat dog ear mites – its acidic properties create an environment in the ear where bacteria and fungus can’t live. However, be very careful when using vinegar if your dog has scratched his ears and has sores or lesions inside (or outside) his ears. He will yelp with pain when that vinegar hits it! Just as you, the owner, would if you put vinegar onto a cut! If you decide to try this, make a mixture of 2 tablespoons of water to one tablespoon of white vinegar. Pour half of it into the dog’s ear and massage gently. Then use a cotton bowl soaked in the mixture to wipe the inside of her ear. If you don’t see positive results in a week, better take her to the vet. Apple Cider Vinegar

Like any vinegar, apple cider vinegar is an acid. It starts as apple juice; yeast and bacteria are added to turn the fruit sugar into alcohol, which ferments and turns into acetic acid.  It’s the acetic acid that gives the vinegar its strong smell and taste. The fermentation process gives apple cider vinegar its antimicrobial properties - it naturally kills organisms like bacteria and fungi. This is one of the reasons it has become known as a great home remedy for a variety of physical ailments - and yes, an all-around household cleaner and disinfectant. Just like with white vinegar, you can try apple cider vinegar in your dog’s ears UNLESS there is any broken skin. The burn and sting it causes when it hits a wound will make your pup yelp and scamper away. Needless to say, it’s too caustic to be used around the eyes. Should you decide to try it, you can use it undiluted if there are no open wounds or lesions. And use organic, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar for more strength in fighting the infection. Yogurt

Many ear infections in dogs are caused by the overgrowth of yeast. Dogs’ ears have yeast in them all the time, but when an overgrowth occurs, inflammation and irritation follow. Yogurt contains alive bacteria, such as acidophilus, which helps maintain the right balance of the normal yeast in your dog’s system. If you want to apply it to the infection, dab a small bit of unflavored yogurt that has active strains of probiotic bacteria on the ear. You can also try having your dog eat yogurt: Put two tablespoons of UNFLAVORED yogurt to your dog by adding it to his food or giving him yogurt-based treats. This can be done even when your dog doesn’t have an ear infection as a preventive measure. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Therefore, we challenge ANYONE out there not to fall hopelessly in love, and become addicted to, our wiggly boy MILK DUD. Just like the candy he is named for, he is super sweet! It’s too bad his former family didn’t appreciate him, because he was found all alone, neglected and dirty in an abandoned yard. He was so happy when his finder lent him a hand, so much so he jumped up on him and gave him a big kiss! But fast forward and now poor Milk Dud is on the list to die, and this is NOT the outcome he expected! This friendly, active, sweet boy who was so well mannered on intake, and who simply ACED his SAFER at the shelter, was dumped at the because of his owner’s complete ignorance of what triggers fear in canines. Bullet had to face down his owner’s friend came racing into his home, unannounced and screaming, while wildly swinging her arms at Bullet’s face over and over for no reason whatsoever. He didn't know what to make of it, or her, but she so completely overwhelmed and freaked him out that he nipped her. This is NOT aggression people, it’s called self-preservation. Bullet is now facing his death because of a crazy person and their ridiculous stupidity. We think the shelter thinks so too, because they went out of their way to post a set of “observations” on Bullet while he has been their guest, and this is what they wrote: “While in the care center, Bullet has allowed all handling, he exhibits a high energy level, he knows cues "Sit, paw, drop it", and enjoys playing fetch with balls. Bullet has been very social during his stay.” 😊 <3 Bullet has been given a bad rap. He has lived in a crazy house, where it seems things were chaotic and frenetic. AT RISK MEMO: Bullet has displayed a high level of energy, a low threshold Arousal, and other concerning behavior while in the care center. Bullet has a bite history as well and due to all of this factors, we are recommending placement with a rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. Bullet was also diagnosed with Canine Infection Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. Scooby is an big, active dog though, and he really needed a lot more exercise than he probably was getting in a busy family situation, and he could also have benefited from some training on the all-important calming commands like “down stay” and “place” so that he could learn to channel his energy and remain calm in the face of distractions that made him anxious. We have to wonder if he was constantly crated, because a dog of his stature and energy really needed to get out of doors to run and play! Blue AT RISK MEMO: Scooby is at risk for both medical and behavior reasons. Scooby has been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs and will require treatment with antibiotics likely for 14 days. Scooby has been sociable whilst at the care center, but does have a known bite history. For this reason, we are seeking placement only with a New Hope partner able to better assess Scooby's behaviors and placement needs. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 08/22: During his time at the Care Center, Scooby has been social with staff members and has allowed all handling. He is easily leashed and walks well down the hallway, and does not pay much attention to other dogs when going for a walk. He appears to be somewhat housebroken and will investigate his surroundings while occasionally checking in with the handler. Scooby returns to his kennel with ease. OWNER SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION: Scooby is an approximately 8 year old mixed breed dog. He previously lived with 2 adults, 2 children, and 1 dog. He is described as outgoing and plays somewhat rough. He is described as respectful and relaxed around children and he will play somewhat rough. Scooby was socialized with a large female dog and is described as respectful and relaxed. He is described as respectful with cats. Scooby is said to guard his food and will growl when attempting to touch his food or go near him when he is eating his food. He has a previous bite history. He bit the previous owner's daughter while she was placing him inside of his crate, he jumped up at her arm and caused bruising. He is partially housetrained and has a high energy level. Scooby is described as somewhat hard to control and isn't bothered with loud noises or fireworks. He will growl and snap when attempting to touch his food, he isn't bothered with being given a bath, being held or restrained or having his nails trimmed. He has never had any medical issues. For a New Family to Know: Scooby is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, pushy and excitable. He enjoys playing with balls and stuffed animals, was being fed Iams dry food once a day and is considered very house trained. He well behaved when left home alone, he does well in crates for at least 8 hours and was being walked once a day. Resource guarding behavior has also been noted in his previous home environment, growling and snapping over food. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Scooby has bitten two people. One of the bites involved a child trying to place Scooby behind a gate and broke skin.
