Thanks @sleepyowlwrites for the "This or That" tag!
1. Historical or Futuristic
most of my WIPs take place in a vaugely historical inspired setting but they're all on other planets that aren't Earth so just,,,,, take that with a truckload of salt. I do love my scifi settings though statistically speaking, I write less of them
2. The Opening or Closing Chapter
2nd chapters are my favorites tbh, but if I had to pick one, then probably opening? Especially if I'm able to come up with a snappy first line.
3. Light + Fluffy or Dark + Gritty
Dark and fluffy - the overall tone is fairly somber and no-nonsense but the characters deeply care for each other and share plenty of soft moments in the midst of everything.
4. Animal Companion or Found Family
Found family only because I have SUCH a hard time keeping track of animal companions slkfjlskfjsdf
5. Horror or Romance
Horror - I don't quite understand romance surrrree I can understand the mechanics of a romantic arc on paper and theoretically write one with enough practice but internalizing how it works is a different story never mind I'm in a relationship I don't know how that happened either lskdfjlsdfk and I think horror and scifi and fantasy are all such fun genres that are closely related, because they ask "What if?" I enjoy it less as a genre on it's own and more as an add-on to speculative fiction. the fucked up aspects of worldbuilding. Adds some ~spice~ I'm a big fan of "oH I didn't think about the implications." horror where it's so subtle you almost miss it and the story stand on its own if you don't catch it, but when you DO notice, the stakes shoot through the roof.
6. Hard or Soft Magic System
I lean more towards hard underlying rules, but the way that people (messy, complicated, beautiful, people) understand and interact with those rules can shift it in a different direction. In Laoche, magic is basically another force of energy in the universe (like electricity, or kinetic energy, or chemical bonds), but groups create religions around it and interact with it in all sorts of ways that aren't clearly defined.
7. Standalone or Series
Statistically speaking, standalones and short stories, but I'm still side eyeing my Laoche Epic
8. One Project at a Time or Always Juggling 2+
More like 20+ my guys, if you count the tangential art and science and craft and music projects that are spawned by my story ideas
10. Fantasy or Sci-fi
Statistically Fantasy, but AI-Lia my beloved <3
11. Character or Setting Description
In the first draft I do more character descriptions (especially around dialogue) but I think I'm better at writing setting descriptions when I REMEMBER them. I'm also biased but I think my settings are pretty cool and unique
12. First or Final Draft
let's ignore the fact I've never reached a final draft but I am dying for the day I can be proud of the finished project and justify sharing it with people
13. Literary or ‘Commercial’ Genre
I am honestly? not sure what his question is asking? I don't write literary fiction and I don't think my stories are particularly commercial because they're often weird as hell and that's why I'm self publishing
14. Love Triangle in Everything or No Romantic Arcs
no romantic arcs, two people is more than complicated enough for me thank you very much.
15. Constant Sandstorm or Rainstorm
I don't really like sand and that sounds more dangerous so I'll have to go with rainstorm? love thunderstorms. flooding is also a problem but I live on a hill so not as much of a worry here. But constant rain is also depressing because no sun. hmmmm. I'll pass :P
this was fun! Open tag if anyone wants to join in
