Imagine a world where Bruce Wayne did not become Batman. Instead, he is just a Normal Dude. Or as normal as a billionaire deeply dedicated philanthropy in a city as insane as Gotham can be.
Because make no mistake: just because Bruce is not Batman does not mean Gotham is not Gotham.
There are a few new players though—on the Rogues side.
Timothy Drake is the teen business tycoon of Drake Industries. Absent of the inspiration of Batman and the socialization and warmth of Dick Grayson, he is ruthless and logical to a fault in pursuit of his goals and just as viciously chaotic as the disaster little brother Jason knows.
In other words, he’s Gotham’s youngest supervillian. The only good news is his chosen nemesis is Lex Luthor. Maybe. Timothy doesn’t care much about collateral damage. It’s not his goal to harm civilians, but he certainly doesn’t include their safety as a priority in his convoluted schemes to mess with Luthor.
Talon is an undead murderer who slaughtered a huge swath the Gotham’s 1% five years ago and, despite being spotted many times since, has never been apprehended. He appears when he wants and disappears just as readily, and Gotham just has to accept there’s a killer stalking their streets and there’s nothing they can do about it. Sometimes Talon has been known to rescue people, especially, but it’s never clear how or why exactly Talon chooses who is victim verses aggressor. And the end is always brutal and bloody for those Talon deems aggressor.
Damian is still Bruce’s biological son and raised by Talia in the League of Assassins. But when he was left in Gotham and met his father, this Bruce was so baffled and thrown by a child assassin that Damian immediately takes as rejection and runs away. (He doesn’t even stay long enough for Bruce to be sure it wasn’t a hallucination or very strange dream).
Damian is almost immediately found and adopted by Talon, so now Gotham has TWO bird-themed killers liable to jump down on you from nowhere and for any reason.
Oh, and god help you if you so much as make Talon’s baby Owlet sad. If you’re lucky, it will be the last thing you do.
Barbara is an ordinary librarian…who can be hired as a mercenary hacker for the right price. The public isn’t afraid of her because they don’t know she exists. More than one politician or public figure has been ruined because of the blackmail she unearthed on them. But what side exactly is the police commissioner’s daughter on? And how much of Gotham does she have under thumb?
(Is she a secret ally and accessory to Timothy Drake’s many plots?)
Steph, thank god, is actually NOT a villain, super or otherwise. She’s the one vigilante attempting to help Gotham. Spoiler has connections among some of the caped community like Supergirl or Wonder Girl. But without Bat training or the police cooperation forged years ago by Batman, she’s mostly just striving to survive while taking on Gotham’s many, many gang. Make no mistake, she’s impressive. But desperate. Spoiler comes with guns and explosions. So. Many. Explosions. Gotham has never heard of the “no kill” rule. And likely never will.
(Cass also lives in Gotham. But no one will ever see her or even know she’s there.)
Jason….well. Baby Jason never stole any Batmobile tires and never was adopted by a strange but kind billionaire. He was never killed at 15.
He died in the winter before he turned 13.
And then one day, Adult Canon Jason gets thrown into this dimension. And somehow Gothan is WORSE?! How is that even possible? Also his siblings are running around being super villains and killing people? Bruce! Control your children!!
But this Bruce does not have children (he’s still mostly convinced Damian was a prank or hallucination). He is horrified by the idea of children fighting crime. He has absolutely no idea how to handle exceptionally talented chaos machines with too much passion and no sense of self preservation. And he’s frankly a little disturbed by Jason himself and his guns and refusal to “work within the system” and Jason nopes out of there so freaking fast.
Jason also, slowly, has to become okay with the realization that his siblings are not insane because they were made Robin. They became Robin because they were already insane. There was no way to create a normal human being out of any of them.
(Jason does not want to look too closely at what that says about him.)
In the end, Jason teams up with Steph. He connects her with Dick/Talon, who is more than happy to have a new Owlet to train and preen, and Damian only slightly stabs her. They manage to persuade/threaten Tim into caring enough to help get Jason back to his dimension with misuse of Drake Industry research equipment. Damian very much does stab Tim. Tim retaliates by locking Damian in an industrial freezer. Dick thinks they’re bonding. Jason introduces them to Babs, but frankly he has no idea what he’s hoping to achieve from this. Probably nothing good because Dick, despite being an under-socialized undead assassin with some weird mannerisms and ways of speaking, still manages to pull a woman way out his league like Barbie. And Babs seems to have no problem with the “murder” part that description.
Jason never realized how much Bruce’s strict moral code and “the Mission” were key to the rest of them becoming remotely positive influences in society. Or how little Bruce has to do with his siblings getting into dangerous, violent situation. He doesn’t like anything about it.
They work out how send Jason back, and he returns to his dimension with the feeling he’s just left Alternate Gotham to a gang of supervillains.
…at least they’re together?
And Talon Dick won’t let any of his new Owlets die and will rain bloody vengeance on anyone who tries. So that’s good. For them at least.
(Jason feels absurdly like he should be apologizing to this universe’s Bruce. Or. Someone. He doesn’t. But he feels like he should.)
Back at in his dimension and at the Batcave, Jason pauses and just stares at Batman for a very, very long time. Finally, he takes a deep breath and solemnly nods just once before taking off into the Manor for Alfred’s cookies.
Bruce has no idea what the fuck just happened.

BLACK AND WHITE BEAUTY
toto wolff x vintage fashion! model! wife! reader
- general married headcanons for toto with a vintage fashion model partner!
finally got around to making some headcanons for this <3
- view my formula 1 masterlist here
reading music recommendations: hug me kiss me love me by helen kane - a fine romance by marilyn monroe
♡ toto is just the absolute best husband to have as a vintage loving woman!
୨୧ he’s very old time romantic, he lives just to spoil you and take you on expensive but romantic dates
♡ but those aren’t the only type of dates he takes you on! oh no!
୨୧ he loves taking you to history museums and art galleries! you guys walk through them hand in hand, pointing to things and holding quiet conversations about them after reading the attached information plaque, he always leaves these dates recommending the place to all of his friends, telling them how much his wife loved it
♡ speaking of spoiling, he buys you anything and everything you could ever want!
୨୧ oh what’s that? a pair of gorgeous vintage diamond earrings are going for auction? well, you better take his card!
♡ he’s always surprising you with new jewellery, clothes and other knick knacks, often leaving them wrapped beautifully in a box on your shared bed for you to find <3
“ ah, that! yes, i saw it in a store today and i thought you would like it, do you? no, it wasn’t too expensive, don’t worry about that, schön! ” ( it was absolutely too expensive but he won’t tell you that and nothing is actually too expensive to him if it means he gets to see your smile )
୨୧ i can see toto really getting into watching old movies with you too! he really immerses into the plot line and characters
♡ you often watch movies together in the living room, you’re curled up into his side with one of his arms thrown around you and his chin resting on your head whilst your eyes are glued to the screen
୨୧ if you mention wanting to go grab a drink or some snacks, don’t you even dare try to get up! he’ll go and get it for you, just be sure to pause the movie because he doesn’t want to miss anything…
♡ if you wear hair curlers to bed so that your hair will be full in the morning, he absolutely helps you with them!
୨୧ he’ll stand behind you as you sit at your vanity, helping you hold and part your hair correctly whilst sending you a cheeky smile and a wink in the mirror when you meet his eyes
♡ he helps you take them out in the morning too, i just know he’d be SO gentle with it, pulling them slowly and making sure they don’t pull painfully and none of your hair is tangled
୨୧ after like, two years of you guys dating, he surprises you with a vintage car you’d been dreaming of owning since you were a kid but could never purchase because even as a model it was just a little out of your price range and pretty hard to come across
♡ but toto found it, he’d find anything if it would make you happy and he’d get to see your beaming smile
୨୧ he’ll never tell you how he found it and managed to snag it but you take a guess that it’s because of his connections in the car industry…
♡ and when you guys got married, the “ just married ” drive off was in that same car <3
୨୧ speaking of your guys’ wedding, oh my god was that a dream
♡ he went all OUT for your wedding, wanting you to have the dream wedding, the wedding you’d fantasised about having for years
୨୧ everything you wanted at your wedding was there, no matter how expensive!
♡ a lot of your wedding was very reminiscent of rich vintage weddings, a beautiful wedding dress with a short train, your hair done perfectly and your makeup as bright as your smile
୨୧ but toto does not do the infamous cake face smash, absolutely not! he can tell you’re extremely happy with your hair and makeup, he doesn’t want to ruin that for you and respects you
♡ so he simply dips his finger in the icing and smears a tiny bit on your nose as you giggle and do the same to him before sharing another kiss
୨୧ when he’s as rich as he is, why wouldn’t he give his liebling her perfect wedding day?
♡ toto will come with you to photoshoots whenever he can, always standing with his arms crossed and a boyish smirk on his face as he admires you performing different poses
୨୧ when you ask for his opinion on an outfit for a shoot, he’s sooo… god, i don’t even know how to explain it! he’s almost completely mesmerised by you, speaking quietly as he just can’t stop running his eyes across your body and face, still finding it hard to believe this is the beauty he gets to call his wife
“ you look amazing, schön… you always look so beautiful, you know this, yes? my beauty ” ( with the amount of compliments he sends you every minute of every day? yes, you definitely know )
♡ the amount of photos that exist of him where he’s standing in the mercedes’ staff area with a big lipstick mark on his cheek is insane…
୨୧ there’s SO many of them circulating on social media! sometimes because he simply doesn’t realise the print is there and other times because he simply doesn’t care to remove it, wearing it almost like a mark of pride
♡ and people notice that whenever you’re in the paddock, he’s much less easily angered!
୨୧ he does not like losing control of his anger in front of you at all and will always suppress it the best he can, being settled by your soft hands massaging his shoulder-blades and your voice whispering assuring words to him
“ thank you, schön… yes, i’m okay… don’t worry, you want to go and get some lunch? a tea, maybe? come, let’s go ” ( he lets out a deep chuckle when watching you drink, admiring how to drink so carefully as to not ruin your perfect lipstick )
♡ the number of flower bouquets you get from toto is enough to rival a flower shop! he gives you one nearly every single day and you have so many vases in your home due to it
୨୧ he just knows you really love how romantic flowers are and when your eyes light up as they land upon the new bouquet he’s extending towards you, it fills his heart with the strongest sense of love
♡ due to you almost always wearing heels, toto is very attentive when it comes to pampering you!

exes to lovers (gojo) ,, one-sides enemies to lovers w geto ,, very feminine + slight meek reader??
a/n!! :: hi this is my first fic ,, have mercy <33
some prior info for now i will add more later (and clean it up)
- not much of an age gap, suguru is js very successful at a young age.
- takes place 2 years after their breakup (mc | satoru)
- y/n is currently a fashion major in her final year of college and fortunately lives near her college and the shadowing program.
- the general plot is y/n is shadowing (following around, studying, etc. not rlly working for him
- NOTTT really real life accurate 🥰
Had you known that coming across your biggest idol would come along with meeting your oh so beloved ex, you would’ve thrown away whatever dreams had clouded your ambitious mind. Yet lo and behold, in front of you stood one of the most renowned fashion designers in the industry with your ex-boyfriend hanging off of him as a price tag (a very expensive tag for that matter).
Suguru Geto stood with pride as his spine and extravagance as his feet, hair that could’ve been painted with the midnight sky half up while the rest cascaded down his back. With an arm on his shoulder, and hair that would make the moon had Suguru’s been the sky, stood Satoru Gojo, your beloved ex. Both men dressed to the nines, outfits that were worth your monthly rent each.
You had cursed the creak of the door that had announced your entrance when you saw them. Gojo however, remained unaware of the stress that climbed your body. Instead, his lifted his eyes to meet yours, blinking back yet letting a small grin tickle his face. “Y/N!” his voice had drawn Suguru’s eyes to follow his line of sight like a siren.
Now, you and Gojo hadn’t had a horrendous break-up (although it’s after affects on you weren’t quite so), in fact it was rather peaceful (while it lasted). Gojo had called your 2 years of love off when he decided that he wanted to pursue a bigger, grander, future, one that apparently hadn’t included you. While he had wanted to go out, meet new people, flitter about the industry, the strain of a relationship had left awkward stains on his work. Especially certain modeling gigs that made him some extra cash.
It was your final year out of college and as one of the top students in your major, you had been provided a shadowing opportunity with various fashion designers to mentor the new rising generation of fashion. However, the pairings were randomized and the last person you’d expect to be yours was one of the greatest and youngest designers, who was also rumored to be your exes lover. How romantic. You had come across Geto’s work originally in a magazine for your project, and had looked him up online. While doing your extended research, you had seen the bright face of Gojo on several of his posts wearing his designs. Immediately you fell in love with his success, ethic, and designs. Dresses so intricate and suits embellished, as if they had walked straight of the manhwas you read.
Geto’s brow had raised at the mention of your name, no doubt familiar with it and the story that may have came with it. His eyes pierced through you, a small hum and what appeared to be a shadow of discontent danced over his face before it went away. He had leaned closer into Gojo after a thorough inspection of you. the rumors hold true then
“Hi.” slipped through your lips at last, however, meek. You feel 12 again showcasing your painting to the old judges in an art contest. Not an ounce of professionalism. Perhaps it wasn’t to late to run out yet.
“Y/N? I heard lots about you” Suguru’s voice came out like silk drowned in a snakes hiss, anxiety bubbled in your blood. “Good things I hope..I look forward to working with you..?” His lack of facial response had you lost in which direction to move this conversation. Instead of a response he simply hummed at looked back at the paper in his hands. Gojo, just as awkward standing beside him.
I wanna go home

Simon Riley it turns out, doesn't have a taste in furniture.
It's not that he has objectively bad taste. He just has none at all.
Which he reckons in hindsight he should have anticipated. He never really furnished his own place after all. Always lived in cheap, outfitted places. Never homes, always just places to stay.
And now he's being confronted with a question he can't answer.
"What would ye like?"
Instinctively answered with "Whatever you'd want, don't really 'ave an opinion."
Only apparently that answer doesn't count.
Even as a kid it was second-hand furniture. The few times there was enough money to repaint something Simon as the big brother had to let Tommy pick first. He usually went with blue. No blues then, that's a start right? He doesn't need to give his brain ammunition to pull him back to his childhood. It has more than enough.
And Ghost has all the blue he'll ever need to see in his life in Soap's eyes.
Good thing he didn't say that sappy shit out loud.
Knowing what he doesn't want is a start but nothing prepared him for a vast store full of things. To make choices like "Which couch do you think will give you the least back pain when you can only test-sit them for a few minutes?"
The only thing he knows for sure is that these gigantic stores would make for a mean close-quarter training ground. He's half tempted to ask Price if they can find one that's about to close down and no one would mind getting shot to shit. It would be a fun challenge.
"Simon, ye with me love?"
Shaking his head to clear it and then giving Johnny a quick thumbs up he struggles up from the sofa he'd been sitting on and contemplating.
"Ye like tha' one? Went right to broodin' on there like ye felt all at home."
"Fuck off."
The defense comes instinctively but he has to admit Johnny is right. Giving the couch another cursory look, like it might jump up and bite him, he can't help but be a bit perplexed.
It's very large, definitely bigger than Soap's old couch. It's also very...red. Which isn't blue. But still it looks like someone spilled an intensiley dark wine all over the thing. Did he like red couches?
Apparently.
Simon Riley, it turns out, has a great taste in furniture. It just took him a moment to figure that out.
He picks sturdy things. Solid woods, iron fastenings, robust. Somewhere in the realm between industrial and old hand made styles.
Soap has been trailing him happily, barely saying a word because letting Ghost pick is easy, he almost always found himself agreeing. It wasn't always his first choice or even something that caught his eyes, but slowly and surely the flat was coming together.
It made him giddy, even knowing it would be a while until everything was delivered and assembled.
It would be lots of warm colours, light wood and dark iron in contrast. But most importantly it would be theirs. Something they'd make their home together. And wasn't that novel?
Two trained SAS operatives picking the carpet they found most cosy? Not plotting for tactical advantages but for a home to come back to. A place to share comfort and to share nightmares and panic attacks.
Because no matter how right they got it they would still be themselves, drenched in blood and now on an appropriately coloured sofa.
Johnny knew he should snap out of the line of thought he was barrelling down before it took him to darker places, but he was ensnared already.
Would one of them sit in that flat, drowning in grief when luck finally ran out for them? Would the signs the other left behind before deployment be a comfort or would they feel haunting?
Or would it just be Price and Gaz, lost in a place that had been a home and was just empty? Soulless. Ready to be emptied of all traces that could tell of secrets that better stayed hidden.
Would it just be one of Laswells people, burning the place without a care, just a precaution after a taskforce lost?
"So it's no' tha' one for sure."
Torn from his thoughts Soap looks up at Simon in confusion.
"Starte' broodin immediately. Can't 'ave you in a shit mood every time you hit the sack. 'ave too many plans for tha' place."
Soap finds himself snorting as he gets up from the bed he was testing.
"Fuck off." he throws back softly. Sees a warm smile spread behind the medical mask on Ghost's face.
"Ye're right though and ye need to tell me of these plans."

The CHIPS Act treats the symptoms, but not the causes
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/07/farewell-mr-chips/#we-used-to-make-things
There's this great throwaway line in 1992's Sneakers, where Dan Aykroyd, playing a conspiracy-addled hacker/con-man, is feverishly telling Sydney Poitier (playing an ex-CIA spook) about a 1958 meeting Eisenhower had with aliens where Ike said, "hey, look, give us your technology, and we'll give you all the cow lips you want."
Poitier dismisses Aykroyd ("Don't listen to this man. He's certifiable"). We're meant to be on Poitier's side here, but I've always harbored some sympathy for Aykroyd in this scene.
That's because I often hear echoes of Aykroyd's theory in my own explanations of the esoteric bargains and plots that produced the world we're living in today. Of course, in my world, it's not presidents bargaining for alien technology in exchange for cow-lips – it's the world's wealthy nations bargaining to drop trade restrictions on the Global South in exchange for IP laws.
These bargains – which started as a series of bilateral and then multilateral agreements like NAFTA, and culminated in the WTO agreement of 1999 – were the most important step in the reordering of the world's economy around rent-extraction, cheap labor exploitation, and a brittle supply chain that is increasingly endangered by the polycrisis of climate and its handmaidens, like zoonotic plagues, water wars, and mass refugee migration.
Prior to the advent of "free trade," the world's rich countries fashioned debt into a whip-hand over poor, post-colonial nations. These countries had been bankrupted by their previous colonial owners, and the price of their freedom was punishing debts to the IMF and other rich-world institutions in exchange for loans to help these countries "develop."
Like all poor debtors, these countries were said to have gotten into their predicament through moral failure – they'd "lived beyond their means."
(When rich people get into debt, bankruptcy steps in to give them space to "restructure" according to their own plans. When poor people get into debt, bankruptcy strips them of nearly everything that might help them recover, brands them with a permanent scarlet letter, and subjects them to humiliating micro-management whose explicit message is that they are not competent to manage their own affairs):
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/07/hr-4193/#shoppers-choice
So the poor debtor nations were ordered to "deregulate." They had to sell off their state assets, run their central banks according to the dictates of rich-world finance authorities, and reorient their production around supplying raw materials to rich countries, who would process these materials into finished goods for export back to the poor world.
Naturally, poor countries were not allowed to erect "trade barriers" that might erode the capacity of this North-South transfer of high-margin goods, but this was not the era of free trade. It wasn't the free trade era because, while the North-South transfer was largely unrestricted, the South-North transfer was subject to tight regulation in the rich world.
In other words, poor countries were expected to export, say, raw ore to the USA and reimport high-tech goods, with low tariffs in both directions. But if a poor country processed that ore domestically and made its own finished goods, the US would block those goods at the border, slapping them with high tariffs that made them more expensive than Made-in-the-USA equivalents.
The argument for this unidirectional trade was that the US – and other rich countries – had a strategic need to maintain their manufacturing industries as a hedge against future geopolitical events (war, but also pandemics, extreme weather) that might leave the rich world unable to provide for itself. This rationale had a key advantage: it was true.
A country that manages its own central bank can create as much of its own currency as it wants, and use that money to buy anything for sale in its own currency.
This may not be crucial while global markets are operating to the country's advantage (say, while the rest of the world is "willingly" pricing its raw materials in your country's currency), but when things go wrong – war, plague, weather – a country that can't make things is at the rest of the world's mercy.
If you had to choose between being a poor post-colonial nation that couldn't supply its own technological needs except by exporting raw materials to rich countries, and being a rich country that had both domestic manufacturing capacity and a steady supply of other countries' raw materials, you would choose the second, every time.
What's not to like?
Here's what.
The problem – from the perspective of America's ultra-wealthy – was that this arrangement gave the US workforce a lot of power. As US workers unionized, they were able to extract direct concessions from their employers through collective bargaining, and they could effectively lobby for universal worker protections, including a robust welfare state – in both state and federal legislatures. The US was better off as a whole, but the richest ten percent were much poorer than they could be if only they could smash worker power.
That's where free trade comes in. Notwithstanding racist nonsense about "primitive" countries, there's no intrinsic defect that stops the global south from doing high-tech manufacturing. If the rich world's corporate leaders were given free rein to sideline America's national security in favor of their own profits, they could certainly engineer the circumstances whereby poor countries would build sophisticated factories to replace the manufacturing facilities that sat behind the north's high tariff walls.
These poor-country factories could produce goods ever bit as valuable as the rich world's shops, but without the labor, environmental and financial regulations that constrained their owners' profits. They slavered for a business environment that let them kill workers; poison the air, land and water; and cheat the tax authorities with impunity.
For this plan to work, the wealthy needed to engineer changes in both the rich world and the poor world. Obviously, they would have to get rid of the rich world's tariff walls, which made it impossible to competitively import goods made in the global south, no matter how cheaply they were made.
But free trade wasn't just about deregulation in the north – it also required a whole slew of new, extremely onerous regulations in the global south. Corporations that relocated their manufacturing to poor – but nominally sovereign – countries needed to be sure that those countries wouldn't try to replicate the American plan of becoming actually sovereign, by exerting control over the means of production within their borders.
Recall that the American Revolution was inspired in large part by fury over the requirement to ship raw materials back to Mother England and then buy them back at huge markups after they'd been processed by English workers, to the enrichment of English aristocrats. Post-colonial America created new regulations (tariffs on goods from England), and – crucially – they also deregulated.
Specifically, post-revolutionary America abolished copyrights and patents for English persons and firms. That way, American manufacturers could produce sophisticated finished goods without paying rent to England's wealthy making those goods cheaper for American buyers, and American publishers could subsidize their editions of American authors' books by publishing English authors on the cheap, without the obligation to share profits with English publishers or English writers.
The surplus produced by ignoring the patents and copyrights of the English was divided (unequally) among American capitalists, workers, and shoppers. Wealthy Americans got richer, even as they paid their workers more and charged less for their products. This incubated a made-in-the-USA edition of the industrial revolution. It was so successful that the rest of the world – especially England – began importing American goods and literature, and then American publishers and manufacturers started to lean on their government to "respect" English claims, in order to secure bilateral protections for their inventions and books in English markets.
This was good for America, but it was terrible for English manufacturers. The US – a primitive, agricultural society – "stole" their inventions until they gained so much manufacturing capacity that the English public started to prefer American goods to English ones.
This was the thing that rich-world industrialists feared about free trade. Once you build your high-tech factories in the global south, what's to stop those people from simply copying your plans – or worse, seizing your factories! – and competing with you on a global scale? Some of these countries had nominally socialist governments that claimed to explicitly elevate the public good over the interests of the wealthy. And all of these countries had the same sprinkling of sociopaths who'd gladly see a million children maimed or the land poisoned for a buck – and these "entrepreneurs" had unbeatable advantages with their countries' political classes.
For globalization to work, it wasn't enough to deregulate the rich world – capitalists also had to regulate the poor world. Specifically, they had to get the poor world to adopt "IP" laws that would force them to willingly pay rent on things they could get for free: patents and other IP, even though it was in the short-term, medium-term, and long-term interests of both the nation and its politicians and its businesspeople.
Thus, the bargain that makes me sympathetic to Dan Aykroyd: not cow lips for alien tech; but free trade for IP law. When the WTO was steaming towards passage in the late 1990s, there was (rightly) a lot of emphasis on its deregulatory provisions: weakening of labor, environmental and financial laws in the poor world, and of tariffs in the rich world.
But in hindsight, we all kind of missed the main event: the TRIPS (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights). This actually started before the WTO treaty (it was part of the GATT, a predecessor to the WTO), but the WTO spread it to countries all over the world. Under the TRIPS, poor countries are required to honor the IP claims of rich countries, on pain of global sanction.
That was the plan: instead of paying American workers to make Apple computers, say, Apple could export the "IP" for Macs and iPhones to countries like China, and these countries would produce Apple products that were "designed in California, assembled in China." China would allow Apple to treat Chinese workers so badly that they routinely committed suicide, and would lock up or kill workers who tried to unionize. China would accept vast shipments of immortal, toxic e-waste. And China wouldn't let its entrepreneurs copy Apple's designs, be they software, schematics or trademarks.
Apple isn't the only company that pursued this strategy, but no company has executed it as successfully. It's not for nothing that Steve Jobs's hand-picked successor was Tim Cook, who oversaw the transfer of even the most exacting elements of Apple manufacturing to Chinese facilities, striking bargains with contractors like Foxconn that guaranteed that workers would be heavily – lethally! – surveilled and controlled to prevent the twin horrors of unionization and leaks.
For the first two decades of the WTO era, the most obvious problems with this arrangement was wage erosion (for American workers) and leakage (for the rich). China's "socialist" government was only too happy to help Foxconn imprison workers who demanded better wages and working conditions, but they were far more relaxed about knockoffs, be they fake iPods sold in market stalls or US trade secrets working their way into Huawei products.
These were problems for the American aristocracy, whose investments depended on China disciplining both Chinese workers and Chinese businesses. For the American people, leakage was a nothingburger. Apple's profits weren't shared with its workforce beyond the relatively small number of tech workers at its headquarters. The vast majority of Apple employees, who flogged iPhones and scrubbed the tilework in gleaming white stores across the nation, would get the same minimal (or even minimum) wage no matter how profitable Apple grew.
It wasn't until the pandemic that the other shoe dropped for the American public. The WTO arrangement – cow lips for alien technology – had produced a global system brittle supply chains composed entirely of weakest links. A pandemic, a war, a ship stuck in the Suez Canal or Houthi paramilitaries can cripple the entire system, perhaps indefinitely.
For two decades, we fought over globalization's effect on wages. We let our corporate masters trick us into thinking that China's "cheating" on IP was a problem for the average person. But the implications of globalization for American sovereignty and security were banished to the xenophobic right fringe, where they were mixed into the froth of Cold War 2.0 nonsense. The pandemic changed that, creating a coalition that is motivated by a complex and contradictory stew of racism, environmentalism, xenophobia, labor advocacy, patriotism, pragmatism, fear and hope.
Out of that stew emerged a new American political tendency, mostly associated with Bidenomics, but also claimed in various guises by the American right, through its America First wing. That tendency's most visible artifact is the CHIPS Act, through which the US government proposes to use policy and subsidies to bring high-tech manufacturing back to America's shores.
This week, the American Economic Liberties Project published "Reshoring and Restoring: CHIPS Implementation for a Competitive Semiconductor Industry," a fascinating, beautifully researched and detailed analysis of the CHIPS Act and the global high-tech manufacturing market, written by Todd Achilles, Erik Peinert and Daniel Rangel:
https://www.economicliberties.us/our-work/reshoring-and-restoring-chips-implementation-for-a-competitive-semiconductor-industry/#
Crucially, the report lays out the role that the weakening of antitrust, the dismantling of tariffs and the strengthening of IP played in the history of the current moment. The failure to enforce antitrust law allowed for monopolization at every stage of the semiconductor industry's supply-chain. The strengthening of IP and the weakening of tariffs encouraged the resulting monopolies to chase cheap labor overseas, confident that the US government would punish host countries that allowed their domestic entrepreneurs to use American designs without permission.
The result is a financialized, "capital light" semiconductor industry that has put all its eggs in one basket. For the most advanced chips ("leading-edge logic"), production works like this: American firms design a chip and send the design to Taiwan where TSMC foundry turns it into a chip. The chip is then shipped to one of a small number of companies in the poor world where they are assembled, packaged and tested (AMP) and sent to China to be integrated into a product.
Obsolete foundries get a second life in the commodity chip ("mature-node chips") market – these are the cheap chips that are shoveled into our cars and appliances and industrial systems.
Both of these systems are fundamentally broken. The advanced, "leading-edge" chips rely on geopolitically uncertain, heavily concentrated foundries. These foundries can be fully captured by their customers – as when Apple prepurchases the entire production capacity of the most advanced chips, denying both domestic and offshore competitors access to the newest computation.
Meanwhile, the less powerful, "mature node" chips command minuscule margins, and are often dumped into the market below cost, thanks to subsidies from countries hoping to protect their corner of the high-tech sector. This makes investment in low-power chips uncertain, leading to wild swings in cost, quality and availability of these workhorse chips.
The leading-edge chipmakers – Nvidia, Broadcom, Qualcomm, AMD, etc – have fully captured their markets. They like the status quo, and the CHIPS Act won't convince them to invest in onshore production. Why would they?
2022 was Broadcom's best year ever, not in spite of its supply-chain problems, but because of them. Those problems let Broadcom raise prices for a captive audience of customers, who the company strong-armed into exclusivity deals that ensured they had nowhere to turn. Qualcomm also profited handsomely from shortages, because its customers end up paying Qualcomm no matter where they buy, thanks to Qualcomm ensuring that its patents are integrated into global 4G and 5G standards.
That means that all standards-conforming products generate royalties for Qualcomm, and it also means that Qualcomm can decide which companies are allowed to compete with it, and which ones will be denied licenses to its patents. Both companies are under orders from the FTC to cut this out, and both companies ignore the FTC.
The brittleness of mature-node and leading-edge chips is not inevitable. Advanced memory chips (DRAM) roughly comparable in complexity to leading-edge chips, while analog-to-digital chips are as easily commodified as mature-node chips, and yet each has a robust and competitive supply chain, with both onshore and offshore producers. In contrast with leading-edge manufacturers (who have been visibly indifferent to the CHIPS incentives), memory chip manufacturers responded to the CHIPS Act by committing hundreds of billions of dollars to new on-shore production facilities.
Intel is a curious case: in a world of fabless leading-edge manufacturers, Intel stands out for making its own chips. But Intel is in a lot of trouble. Its advanced manufacturing plans keep foundering on cost overruns and delays. The company keeps losing money. But until recently, its management kept handing its shareholders billions in dividends and buybacks – a sign that Intel bosses assume that the US public will bail out its "national champion." It's not clear whether the CHIPS Act can save Intel, or whether financialization will continue to hollow out a once-dominant pioneer.
The CHIPS Act won't undo the concentration – and financialization – of the semiconductor industry. The industry has been awash in cheap money since the 2008 bailouts, and in just the past five years, US semiconductor monopolists have paid out $239b to shareholders in buybacks and dividends, enough to fund the CHIPS Act five times over. If you include Apple in that figure, the amount US corporations spent on shareholder returns instead of investing in capacity rises to $698b. Apple doesn't want a competitive market for chips. If Apple builds its own foundry, that just frees up capacity at TSMC that its competitors can use to improve their products.
The report has an enormous amount of accessible, well-organized detail on these markets, and it makes a set of key recommendations for improving the CHIPS Act and passing related legislation to ensure that the US can once again make its own microchips. These run a gamut from funding four new onshore foundries to requiring companies receiving CHIPS Act money to "dual-source" their foundries. They call for NIST and the CPO to ensure open licensing of key patents, and for aggressive policing of anti-dumping rules for cheap chips. They also seek a new law creating an "American Semiconductor Supply Chain Resiliency Fee" – a tariff on chips made offshore.
Fundamentally, these recommendations seek to end the outsourcing made possible by restrictive IP regimes, to undercut Wall Street's power to demand savings from offshoring, and to smash the market power of companies like Apple that make the brittleness of chip manufacturing into a feature, rather than a bug. This would include a return to previous antitrust rules, which limited companies' ability to leverage patents into standards, and to previous IP rules, which limited exclusive rights chip topography and design ("mask rights").
All of this will is likely to remove the constraints that stop poor countries from doing to America the same things that postcolonial America did to England – that is, it will usher in an era in which lots of countries make their own chips and other high-tech goods without paying rent to American companies. This is good! It's good for poor countries, who will have more autonomy to control their own technical destiny. It's also good for the world, creating resiliency in the high-tech manufacturing sector that we'll need as the polycrisis overwhelms various places with fire and flood and disease and war. Electrifying, solarizing and adapting the world for climate resilience is fundamentally incompatible with a brittle, highly concentrated tech sector.
Pluralizing high-tech production will make America less vulnerable to the gamesmanship of other countries – and it will also make the rest of the world less vulnerable to American bullying. As Henry Farrell and Abraham Newman describe so beautifully in their 2023 book Underground Empire, the American political establishment is keenly aware of how its chokepoints over global finance and manufacturing can be leveraged to advantage the US at the rest of the world's expense:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/10/weaponized-interdependence/#the-other-swifties
Look, I know that Eisenhower didn't trade cow-lips for alien technology – but our political and commercial elites really did trade national resiliency away for IP laws, and it's a bargain that screwed everyone, except the one percenters whose power and wealth have metastasized into a deadly cancer that threatens the country and the planet.

Steamy Saturday
" . . . without the society of women, homosexual practices are likely to be evident. . . ."
"Now Van moved into the masculine world of politics . . . where he learned that the price of power was a surrender to lust in all forms."
"Van was almost a senator when Jeff seduced him. . . and then blackmailed his career . . . and his manhood."
Senator Swish by Aaron Thomas (misspelled Arron on the cover), published in 1968 by adult-book publisher William Hamling's Phenix Publishing/Greenleaf Classics in San Diego as part of its Companion Book series, has a plot line where the main character goes beyond binary choice and learns to accept his bisexuality.
The story line is a little complicated, but here's a synopsis: Van is a successful L.A. lawyer tapped to run for senator. His girlfriend Jennifer works in the fashion industry and is off on assignment for a couple of weeks. While she's gone, her college-student brother Jeff shows up, and Van soon learns that Jeff is gay, which upsets him greatly. Nevertheless, Jeff manages to seduce Van, and while he's conflicted about his sexuality, Van certainly enjoys his time with Jeff. Still, if this affair came out, it would jeopardize his run for senator, and then of course there's Jennifer. Van decides to get Jeff an apartment so he can be with Jennifer and have her brother on the side. Yeah, that'll work out great; problem solved.
Jennifer eventually returns and Van tells her that her brother has returned from college. Jennifer is confused and proves to him that her brother is still in Ohio at college. Plot twist! Jeff is not who he says he is! Turns out, this rather elaborate ruse by ersatz-Jeff was just a complicated (and not very believable) frame to blackmail Van! Oh no! But, Jennifer and Van turn the tables on counterfeit-Jeff (how? No spoiler here!), and Jennifer, while hurt by the affair that almost ruined their lives, forgives Van because, after all, she works in the fashion industry and understands the queer world where men can "go both ways." Oh, lucky Van! They agree to marry, and presumably live happily ever after. We never do learn whether Van becomes a senator, however.
We don't have any information on the author Aaron Thomas, although the name is used as author for quite a number of gay pulp novels, but we do know that the cover art (apparently trying to appeal to multiple sexual orientations?) is by noted artist and illustrator Darrel Millsap (1931-2012).

Be Still My Heart
Chapter 8- Five Steps Forward
Masterlist AO3 Next Previous
New Chapter Every Saturday
You're the best in the meth industry but a new product suddenly pops up. You and your boss, Valeria, must figure out who is making it so you can take back the market. All the while tension is building between the two of you.
A/N: Things will get interesting in the next chapter. Anyway, I have every chapter outlined but sometimes when I write I stray from the plot. I did so a bit here. I wanted to work on the chemistry between Reader and Valeria. It's hard trying to write heartfelt moments with Valeria while also trying to keep her canon personality
Tags/Warnings: Illegal Substances, Boss Employee Relationship, Angst, Some Hurt/Comfort, Violence, Manipulation, Suggestive Themes, Smut (But Only in CH19.), Dual POV
Valeria is finally making back all that lost revenue. She sifts through reports and graphs over the last few weeks. Watching that little green line slowly crawl up. Larger batches for a lower price proved to be a good business move. Despite now finally rivalling the Super Meth, Deigo still wants to go down to Pajaro Azul. Snuff out the competition anyway. Valeria still finds herself wary of treading on hostile territory, but she sees where he's coming from. Having another product that close to your own in quality is cutting it far too close for comfort.
She sets aside the stack of papers. Things are finally getting good, but they aren't yet stable. At least she's making progress with you. You two have even had your unofficial first and second dates. Cooking meth together and drinking wine. Maybe you didn't see those events as dates, but Valeria certainly did. She's confident there's something growing between the two of you. Valeria stretches and yawns. She had offered to have you come over, to paint you. Truth is, she's painted you already. Quite a few times. Each attempt more accurate than the last.
Although for each five steps forward you seem to take two back. Valeria thought you'd be more comfortable at work if she presented herself as a friend, but you've gone back to yourself imposed isolation. Valeria hardly sees you and when she tries to speak your answers are all dry and bare bones. It's frustrating for Valeria but she's not giving up on you. She wonders how you'll feel when she tells you who she sent to Pajaro Azul. a couple enforcers as well as Corra. Will Corra's absence make you feel better? It certainly made Valeria feel better. she knows you don't want anything to do with Corra, refusing to even stay in the same room as her, but Valeria feels paranoid that for whatever reason you two will fall back on speaking terms. She still views Corra as a threat to you and her. Having her gone really makes life better.
Wood scraping against wood sounds through the room as Valeria stands, pushing her chair back. She runs her fingers through the shiny black strands of her hair, which now dangle against her shoulders. Her hair is getting longer, she muses. She needs to cut it soon. Valeria adjusts her belt and holsters before making her way towards the door. Time to put an end to your isolation. Valeria strides down the long halls with purpose. she goes unstopped, people know better than to bother her. She keeps a sharp eye out though. Watching for any unacceptable behavior. She's had too many of her men get high on the job.
Seems everyone is on their best behavior today. Valeria stops in front of the metal door leading down into the concealed, illegal, very professional meth lab. She gives the door a few, swift knocks before walking inside.
"Suit!" You bark without looking at her. Valeria inwardly sighs. You always stick so closely to rules and safety procedures. It makes you an excellent worker, but sometimes Valeria thought you could do with some loosening up.
"Why don't you come out here and take a break." She suggests, voice echoing through the room. "You've been down here for ages."
"Can't lose my flow." You reply. Struggling to lift a heavy container. The pseudoephedrine, if Valeria is remembering correctly.
Valeria leans against the wall. Unimpressed.
"Take a break." She says firmly. You awkwardly halt, instinctively wanting to follow her orders but then you go back to work. Pouring the pseudo into a flask. Valeria says your name. "Take a break."
You finally stop and turn to face her. Watching from behind the glass eye holes of your gas mask. You don't speak though. Instead, you reluctantly approach her. Moving past her up the stairs. In the hallway you take off your gas mask. She watches appreciatively as a bead of sweat slowly drips down your neck. Valeria moves to stand beside you. Crossing her arms over her chest.
"How's it going?" Valeria asks. "You almost done this batch?"
You shrug. "Halfway there." That's it. Halfway there. Valeria waits for you to speak. You don't. You stand there stiffly and stare off into space.
"Did something happen?" She asks, narrowing her eyes at you. Apart from the whole thing with Corra but Valeria doesn't think you should still be upset over that.
"No, why?" You don't even look at her as you speak. It annoys her.
Valeria raises a hand and scratches her nose. "Because you've been moody for weeks, acting like a sullen teenager."
You frown at her. "I'm not acting like a 'sullen teenager.'" You say defensively.
"No?" Valeria says, raising her brows. "Sure seems like it."
You scoff at her and smile, though you're not amused. Still, even though your smile isn't genuine she thinks it looks good on you. She'd like to see you do it more often. "Am I supposed to just smile and laugh all the time? Is that how I have to be to avoid being accused of being a 'sullen teenager'?"
Your anger is better than your silence. Valeria leans in and gets in your face.
"You're acting like one right now." She sneers. "Just a few words away from 'it's not a phase, mom!'"
You recoil with an appalled expression. "You're just like the rest of them." You snap. Catching Valeria off guard. "Doesn't matter what I do or say it's never the right thing for you people."
"You people?" Valeria parrots, furrowing her brows.
"Yeah, you people." You retort. "I cook meth for you, I'm not here to be some social butterfly, and news flash-" Your voice raises. "-I'm allowed to be upset."
Valeria frowns at you. "Relax, I'd remember who I'm speaking to if I were you." She warns quietly. Though she is considering your words.
She watches you shake your head. As if you were disappointed with her. That's definitely not what she wants. Valeria swallows her irritation.
"Why are you upset?"
"You accused me of acting childish."
"I accused you of acting like a sullen teenager." She corrects. "You were upset before that though. Why?"
You eye her like she's setting a trap. "It doesn't matter how old I or the people around me get. Nothing ever changes." You reply. "It's like there's something wrong with me and they know it at first glance. I'm treated like a joke."
Valeria almost empathizes with your frustration. "Do you think I see you as I joke?" She asks.
You don't respond right away. Chewing on the inside of your cheek and you mull over your words. "I'm not sure how you see me." You admit. "Sometimes it feels like you value me and the work I do here and sometimes I get the feeling that you see me as some sort of pet."
Silence settles in the dust between the two of you. Your words lingering in the air like moisture. Valeria breathes it into her body. Absorbing them.
"I do value the work you do." Valeria says. For once she's being completely honest. Not just saying things to butter you up. "You're intelligent and reliable. Without you we wouldn't be making the money that we do." The Cartel was making plenty before you came into the picture but after Valeria's incarceration, profit plummeted. They'd likely still be struggling or have crumbled completely if you hadn't boldly stridden into her office demanding a job. You were transparent in what you had to offer and looked her in the eye the entire time. it impressed her enough to hire you. Sometimes she wished she turned you away though. Her attachment to you is frustrating.
"Any chemist worth their pseudoephedrine could cook meth." You reply dismissively. Crossing your arms and looking away. You're much more relaxed though. A clear invitation for Valeria to continue.
"Sure." Valeria says. "But you're cheaper and I find you tolerable."
"I'm tolerable and cheap. You really know how to flatter a girl." You say dryly.
Valeria stares at you intensely.
"I'll do more to you than simple flattery, chemist." She says quietly. She catches you off guard. Watching you ponder over the meaning of her words. Innuendo or threat, you don't seem to know. "I've decided to send some people over to Pajaro Azul."
You frown. "Why?"
Valeria can practically smell the insecurity seeping out of your pores. 'You don't think my product is good enough?' "It's a good idea to crush this issue at the source, eliminate the competition and their customers will become our customers."
"What about the Cartel down there?" You worry.
Valeria narrows her eyes. "You don't think I'm able to handle them?" She asks. Valeria doesn't like the idea of looking weak, but she especially doesn't want you to see her that way.
You shake your head quickly.
"No, but I don't want it to cause unnecessary problems."
Valeria lays a hand on your shoulder. Feeling the warmth from your body through the thin plastic of your scrubs. "Some problems are necessary, sweetheart."
"Sweetheart?"
"You won't need to worry about those ones, just cook us meth and I'll deal with everything else."
She manages to shut down any other protests. For now.

Devildom's Idol // Obey Me Brothers x Idol!Reader Headcanons
As you stand on the stage, you realize after a long journey that you have made it. A mere human singing on a stage, surrounded by hundreds of demons singing along to your music.
It took time for them to recognize you, but no one could deny your voice or impact anymore. You sung your heart out on stage and that alone gave rise to the fanbase before you. You were truly an idol that transcended the realms.
The music blared and you raised your microphone to your mouth.
"Are you ready, Devildom?"
The crowd screamed and you smiled. You began singing, listening to the chants of fans and watching swirling light-sticks in the crowd. This was everything you ever wanted, but you didn't do it alone.
You glance to the person staring at you behind the stage, waiting for you to finish your last song. He had been with you every step of the way.
✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°
Lucifer
Definitely proud of you and having a famous partner is probably some type of ego boost to him.
Would be protective of you though, from fans and both the industry itself.
Not afraid to put any creepy idols or executives in their place.
Looking over contracts with your manager for sure.
You're just sitting there as they go back and forth on the prices to negotiate for.
Would be like a second manager to be honest.
Makes sure you eat and take care of yourself.
"MC, did you take a break, yet? You've been practicing since early morning." "Uh..."
Will pick you up and force you to sit down and rest.
He knows how hard your work to give your best performances.
You will have to do the same to him sometimes.
You both work too hard.
Mammon
Definitely would ask for like 10,000 grim whenever someone wanted a picture with you.
Partially out of jealously even if he denies it.
Would sell some random things of yours, nothing too personal, but a pen is definitely going missing when he can't fight the urge.
"Mammon?" "Yeah, MC?" "Where's my pen? "..."
He bolts every time.
Photoshoots together 100%
People would definitely realize you were together at some point.
There would be rumors and gossip, sometimes people talking bad about Mammon, but you didn't tolerate that at all.
He may not be perfect, but he was yours.
He secretly doesn't understand why someone as great as you is with him.
May or may not know some fan chants, but that's his business only.
Levi
Probably stans you
"I-I can't believe the idol MC hugged me???" "Levi... We've been dating for six months..."
Can't believe he's dating an idol
Is this an anime plot???
Posters of you in his room
Definitely fights to get merch of yours even though you could give him freebies
Would be jealous at other fans talking about you, but would then realize he's the only one that actually has you.
Still gets jealous though.
He tries his best to attend your concerts, sometimes he's overwhelmed, other times he's waving his light-stick and chanting in perfect harmony with the other fans.
You are both in awe and horrified at how perfect he does the fan chants.
Satan
Sometimes when he wants background noise while reading he'll put on your music.
Always manages to go to your concerts.
If anyone tries anything, they better be careful.
Once a demon tried to grab your hand and pull you close.
Satan got involved.
You prayed for that random demon.
Secretly feels like he has a one-up on Lucifer by dating you.
Not that it's the reason he's dating you, but it's a bonus.
Definitely would buy all the magazines that featured you in someway.
Front covers?? Interviews??? Boy has got it all.
He makes even the most dedicated fans look like fake fans with his collection.
"Satan, you don't have to buy every magazine I'm in," "I don't have to but I want to."
You wore cat ears a fan gave you once and it literally broke him.
Asmo
Selfies everyday, and I mean everyday.
Everyone in Devildom would be delusional if they didn't notice you were together
The most sought after demon and the most sought after idol??
Definitely lots of talk about you two.
You used to sing at his "Asmo Nights" but the crowd got too large at some point and Diavolo had to step in to prevent a hazard.
So, only sing at concerts please, for Diavolo and Barbatos' sake.
You find out that boy can sing and the Devildom is flipped upside down when you two release a duet.
However, even with all the attention, he would always make sure that you know he's loyal to you. He doesn't care about others or fans as much as he cares about you.
Your love is what he needs most.
"You know I love you the most, right? <3"
Beel
Feel like he would be proud of you, but in the end it wouldn't matter to him if you're famous
He just likes you for you
And your cooking
I can see him going to every event though, waving a light-stick in one hand while munching on something with the other.
Seeing how hard you work makes him hungry.
He would be protective of you though, not afraid to step in if a fan was getting too close.
Brings extra snacks into the practice room and tries his best not to eat them so that you can eat when you're done.
"MC, take a break," "I can't Beel, I still haven't got this step down," "Well, I brought your favorite," "..."
You try to say no, but your stomach growls and you end up beside him, munching together on your favorite snacks.
Belphie
Sings your songs while he's asleep.
You recorded him singing in his sleep. You watch the videos whenever you need to pick yourself up.
Tries his best to stay awake during your concerts, but if he can't, he'll find all the posts he can about it.
That way he can see if he missed anything.
Definitely makes it a goal to have you rest.
You are booked and busy, but you can't forget to sleep.
Admires how hard you practice.
But is possessive and hates when can't spend time with him.
Sleeps in the practice room as you learn new dances.
You wake him up when you're done and he just pulls you close and cuddles with you awhile.
"Belphie, I'm sweaty," "And?"
Eventually will let you go so you clean up.
✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°✧˖°
Hope you enjoyed. I tried my best to make things accurate, I'm still new to writing the boys and Satan gave me the toughest time. This is my second work and my first time doing headcanons in the fandom, hopefully I can do more soon, and maybe make this one a series!
