France is getting a live action "Cat's Eye" television series, starting on TF1 and TF1+ this September!
The show will come in the form of eight episodes, and each will run for around 52 minutes in length. While the set-up is similar to the original animated series and manga, this retelling will take place during the modern day, in 2023.
A world-wide release on Amazon Prime Video is planned, however air dates outside of France are currently unconfirmed.
The story synopsis is as follows:
"The series traces the story of âCat's Eyesâ back to its roots, and follows the adventures of the three Chamade sisters as they improvise a series of daring heists around the French capital's most iconic (and security-conscious) monuments.
It's 2023, and Alexia, Tam and Sylia are reunited in the City of Light after many years apart. At the same time, a work of art that belonged to their father â who had died ten years earlier in a mysterious fire at his art gallery â reappears in a prestigious exhibition at the Eiffel Tower. The sisters decide to risk everything to steal the painting, in the hope that they will finally solve the mystery of what happened to their father. The trio soon find themselves in the crosshairs of Quentin Chapuis, commissioner of the French police's Organised Crime Unit (BRB), who is tasked with arresting these new, elusive art thieves. But what he doesn't know is that one of them is none other than Tam, the great love of his lifeâŚ
From their chaotic emotional reunion, to combining their apparently normal existence with a dangerous, clandestine double life, the three sisters face challenge after challenge. Firmly of our time but with frequent nods to the 80s, the series will be an explosive mix of action, romance and comedy. This adaptation of the cult manga series âCat's Eyesâ reaffirms our ambitious programming strategy, built around event broadcasting franchises."

Maleficent is a retelling of Disneyâs Sleeping Beauty. It is not just a reimagining.
It is a capitalization on Disneyâs eye-catching design for their animated Maleficent. If it were just this beautiful original spin on the fairy tale by Charles Perrault or even the version in Perceforest, it would look incredibly different.
In Perraultâs version, the evil fairy that curses the princess has one defining character trait: she is old. She is ancient, and has lived in a tower isolated for so long that everyone thought she was dead, and thatâs why she wasnât invited to the princessâ christening. She disappears after placing the curse and is not heard from, defeated, or worried about for the rest of the story.
What the animated Disney Sleeping Beauty did was take that character and make her:
Beautiful
Horned
Powerful
An antagonist that returns to the plot.
Named âMaleficent.â
Two huge things that they changed which turned the evil fairy into an iconic villainess that endured to this day were the name of the character and the way she looks. Those things are unique to the Disney animated classic version. They are inseparable.
So your wonderful âreimaginedâ Maleficent came along in the year 2014 and said, âYeah, weâre going to do something new and different!â And did this:
Actually, the movie never said that. The trailer included lines from the animated film, again, iconic and unique to the Animated film, and even capitalized on the original âOnce Upon a Dreamâ song.
But itâs funny that everyone acts like itâs not a retelling of the animated film, and they want to use the word âreimagining.â
All youâre really saying is that we should excuse this film for marketing itself as a movie that would satisfy or interest fans of the original Sleeping Beauty, but wound up totally dumping on the original Sleeping Beauty through the changes it made.
The movie is not a beautiful new twist on the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. It is a money-grabbing shock jock Wicked rip-off that would not exist if it werenât trying to climb onto the shoulders of the SPECIFIC ANIMATED SLEEPING BEAUTY.
Going to say it one more time. If Maleficent (2014) wanted to be this amazing exercise in originality, it should not have been so tightly tied to the Disney Animated Classic. Because when it is connected so tightly to that specific animated version of the tale, we expect it to celebrate that version, and instead, it spat on it.
All it really did was celebrate the striking character design of the evil fairy and capitalize on the name. Like a bait-and-switch.
And side-note, a movie that takes the main character and makes her everything to everyone in the plot is so obnoxious. I was more intensely bored by this movie than any other live action remake because I couldnât care about a main character who kept switching tones every five minutes. First sheâs a naive free spirited waif, then sheâs a scorned lover, then sheâs a dramatic villainess, then sheâs a bumbling caretaker, then sheâs a beloved mother, etc. Her motives and feelings about the situations sheâs in change and conflict so many times during the movie that I stop caring.
And while I stop caring about this movie, I entertain myself by thinking about how consistent the motives and character choices for the original were, and how superior it was, and how cheap and awful a movie that over-glorifies itâs main character is.
#Keep coming for Cinderella 2015 and watch me be obnoxious#all three of you know who you are#Maleficent#live action Disney critique#Cinderella 2015#sleeping beauty#mistress of all evil#Disney

Don't Be A Stranger
Pairing:Â Bruce Wayne (Battinson) x gn!Reader
Word Count/Rating:Â 4.7k // PG-13
Warnings:Â references to canon-typical violence/injury
Summary:Â There's no mistaking that silhouette. It's him in your living room. The Batman.
It was pure chance. Anyone in Ms. Atwood's fourth grade class could have ended up with him as their pen pal. You're not sure you believe that the stars aligned just right or that fate was on your side anymore than it being a true, one-in-a-million fluke. Still, you're the one who ended up with Bruce Wayne as their pen pal.
You didn't know it was him at first. You were only given his first name and a non-descript address. The PO box didn't exactly scream the prince of Gotham. Sometimes you wonder if you would have treated him differently if you had known. There's a good chance you would have.
As young as you were, no one could forget the bold, block letters of the Gotham Gazette from early that September. THOMAS AND MARTHA WAYNE DEAD. The editor didn't even attempt to give it any flair. It was shocking enough on its own.
Your father had been devastated, a large supporter of Thomas Wayne's mayoral campaign. Your mother had regarded Martha as a style icon, in shambles over losing her favorite inspiration. You remember reading the byline about young Bruce surviving the ordeal, trying to comprehend what it would mean to suddenly no longer have parents.
It was news that rocked the entire city and the very next day it's all your classmates could talk about. Robbie Carter said his grandpa thought it was all a conspiracy, Monica Gibbs told you her dad was one of the first officers on the scene and that blood had been everywhere, and Avery Parker told everyone to shut up. You were glad Avery did, as the discussion had been making you start to feel queasy.
A few months later though, when your pen pal was assigned, the name Bruce didn't really click. After all, why would Bruce Wayne of all children be writing to someone in the Gotham Public School system?
Blissfully unaware of your pen pal's true identity, you wrote to him like you would have any other kid your age. You introduced yourself, telling him the important details like your favorite ice cream flavor and what you wanted to be when you were older. He was kind enough to not point out that an astronaut chef was an unlikely job.
His responses were a bit muted in comparison, but you didn't mind. It was clear Bruce was intelligent early on with his large vocabulary and varied topics. More than once you had to look up words in the dictionary or pull a reference to understand what he was talking about. Having to look things up sometimes was far better than a boring pen pal â like Andrew Clark who had a pal that only wanted to talk about a specific species of shark.
At the end of the school year with a parent's permission you could send your home address to your pen pal to keep the correspondence going. It took three days to get your mom to grant her approval and worth every extra chore you agreed to. Even more thrilling was that Bruce wanted to keep writing to you too.
Somewhere early fifth grade you figured out Bruce's real identity, not that he'd ever truly been hiding it. The pieces had been clicking together for a while but the clear mention of his bedroom in the Tower cinched it. There's only one capital T Tower in Gotham and everyone knows it belongs to the Wayne family.
You chose to not acknowledge it. Looking back on it you don't know why â it just didn't seem to make a difference. Bruce was Bruce, Wayne name attached or not.
You both kept writing consistently all the way through middle school. Considering the attention span of kids, especially pre-teens, it was a remarkable feat. From what you knew, you were the only one to keep in touch with your pen pal for so long.
For whatever reason your parents never chose to look over your letters and without a teacher's watchful eye, you could say anything. No topic was off limits. There was no judgment between you two. The bond was sacred, sharing every last thought and feeling. You normally made up for where he lacked in the feelings discussion, where Bruce had plenty of thoughts for the both of you.
High school was where things started to slip. You were caught up in keeping your grades high, extra curriculars, and the drama of whoâs dating who. Youâre not really sure what Bruce got caught up in â as far as you knew he didnât even attend the posh boarding school for Gotham's elites.Â
Needless to say, the established schedule fell apart a little. It certainly wasnât once a week anymore but you did your best. Even when you didnât get a reply for a while, you kept sending your letters. Someone had to be clearing out the PO box because none of them were ever returned.
Bruceâs letters came to a complete stop soon after graduation. It coincided with his widely-reported disappearance from Gotham, so you werenât surprised, but it felt wrong to give up on your correspondence. A pen pal for this long shouldnât end without a proper goodbye.Â
You kept at it â the frequency of your post varying with the ups and downs of life. College brought exciting times but also a fair amount of strife. You kept Bruce up to date about everything. New friends, new partners, new addresses when you moved, celebrations of passing exams, excitement over what was on the horizon, grief at the untimely loss of your father, the burden of bills and low wages.Â
While there werenât any letters being sent in return, Bruce would find a way to pop up in your life from time to time. Youâre not sure what he was up to in his world, but it was enough to know he was reading your letters. A surprise delivery of baked goods at your doorstep filled with your favorite confectionaries, a large anonymous bouquet at your fatherâs wake, a mystery deposit in your bank account when your bills became a bit too tight.Â
You'd offer a brief thank you in your next letter, nothing that would embarrass him, but enough that it was acknowledged. After all this time you had a good idea of how to properly toe that line.Â
Part of you wished for a real response. Even a short missive emblazoned on impersonal Wayne letterhead. You weren't ungrateful for his little gestures, but you missed his voice, his mind. Bruce had the most interesting way of looking at the world. You missed being privy to it â you hoped one day he would let you back in.
â
It's late when you get home. Clean-up at the volunteer shelter took longer than you expected, meaning your trip home was more nerve wracking than usual. Your apartment isnât in the Narrows, but that isnât saying much. Gotham isnât the kind of city to have a truly âsafeâ neighborhood â the promise of violence just varies from borough to borough. Youâd say yours provides an even 50/50 shot.
The mostly-empty subway cars are uninviting despite being the fastest and safest option. With less bodies crammed inside the tubes it means your chances of being targeted go up. Every squeak of the train track seems louder, every rattle a little more threatening. You keep a tight hold on your bag. The streets themselves arenât much better. Moonlight barely reaches the street, blocked by the thick clouds, and streetlights are inconsistent at best.
You breathe a sigh of relief when you see your apartment door. Six stories up with two locked doors between you and Gotham's nighttime streets means you can finally relax. It's not really paranoia, more so staying vigilant in a dangerous city.
You flick on your small table lamp and fall into the couch. There's an attempt to fling your bag onto the coffee table, but it hits the side and it slumps onto the floor. Not a big deal. You'll grab it tomorrow. The comfort of home settles in, nearly tempting you to close your eyes right there on the couch when your stomach growls. Food, eating, important. Right.
Rolling off the cushions, you catch a small whiff of yourself. You donât smell bad, but youâre not sure it can be said that you smell good. Your priorities quickly become apparent. Food, shower, then sleep. Anything else is tomorrowâs problem.Â
Deciding what to eat is easy when there isnât much in your kitchen to start with. Grocery shopping was supposed to happen yesterday, but with how busy your week has been thereâs been no time. Luckily, thereâs still enough to scrape together a serviceable sandwich. You eat it over the sink, not wanting to deal with a dirty plate and trying to keep the crumbs contained.
By the time you finish your sandwich, your eyes are half-open. Skipping the shower until tomorrow morning is incredibly tempting, but the idea of slipping into your sheets squeaky clean just barely beats it out.Â
It takes a little time for your water to heat properly, the result of aging infrastructure and a half-caring landlord. In an effort to keep yourself awake, you pull out a pen and paper and begin to scrawl a new letter to Bruce.Â
It's been nearly two weeks since your last one. You've gotten through the simpler details when the water has finally heated, abandoning the letter on the kitchen counter.Â
The choice to shower was the correct one. There's immediate relief standing underneath the warm spray, the stress of your day-to-day melting away. The city's grime sloughs off of you, collecting in the tub. It eventually makes its way down the drain â a clogged pipe that you can do nothing about always leads to an inch of water for you to stand in.
You're nearing the end of your shower when a noise catches your ear outside the bathroom door. You quickly write it off. With an apartment six floors up it would take a worthless amount of dedication to find a way into your place. Any smart thief wouldn't enter the apartment with a light on either. It's nothing.
Rinsing your hair, there's another louder noise accompanied by a heavy grunt. There's no mistaking that. Someone has found their way into your apartment.
Panicked, you quickly grab a towel and wrap it around yourself. If someone is going to break into your place they aren't going to catch you completely naked. Looking around the bathroom, you quickly settle on the plunger for a weapon. It's not much but definitely better than nothing. The thought of the baseball bat perfectly nestled under the edge of your bed taunts you.
The shower is still running, but your water bill is the least of your concern at the moment. If you die in the next ten minutes you won't have to pay it anyway.
Inching towards the door, you mentally walk through your gameplan. Throw open the door, plunger raised, run at the intruder yelling, and rain fury down upon them. Hopefully they'll be so shocked by your deranged appearance that they'll immediately frighten and leave.
You only manage to execute the first two steps of the plan â the shock of what you find stopping you dead in your tracks.
There's a man standing there, but it's not some random drophead like you thought. There's no mistaking that silhouette. It's him in your living room. The Batman.
Before you can really process the insanity of the situation he stumbles, landing hard on one knee. You rush over, terrified that the masked vigilante of Gotham is going to die here on your secondhand rug.
He's heavy. With more than half his dead weight falling onto you, it's a shock you don't completely buckle underneath him.Â
"Come on, at least get to the couch before collapsing," you grunt, leading him over.Â
His eyes are partially closed, clearly struggling to keep them open. He's breathing heavily with his suit half blown to hell. You have no idea what to do.
The most intense medical experience you have is shooting someone full of narcan to help prevent an overdose at the volunteer shelter â an experience you're not exactly eager to repeat. You weren't built for stitching up wounds and preventing infection. Clutching your towel, the realization that there is nothing you can do for him is crushing.
Water is becoming a puddle on the floor beneath you, your breaths becoming more ragged to match his with every passing moment. Something about your fear seems to awaken something in him.
"Frontâ pocket. Autoâ injector. Thigh." Every word is a labor. It takes you a few moments too long for his words to click.
"Now."
The force of his words snaps you into action. You launch forward, frantically flipping through all his pockets to find the right one. Front pocket, honestly. He couldn't have been more vague. Eventually, your fingers wrap around something that looks similar to an epipen.
"Twist. Thenâ" he breathes in sharply, struggling for the next word. "inject."
You can do that you think. His armor is thick, but the fabric on his inner thigh thins a bit. With his sprawled position, it's easy to access.Â
You twist the injector, watching the liquid turn royal blue before stabbing it into his thigh. He cries out slightly, his body tensing, before collapsing back into the cushions.
"Good job."
His eyes slide shut. His chest continues to rise and fall at a slow but steady pace. The mania of the last few moments washes over you, panic transforming into shock and confusion. How did Batman manage to choose your apartment out of millions? What the fuck.
You stand there looking down at him, suddenly realizing you're only in a towel and the shower is still running. A flush of embarrassment courses through you as realization crashes. There's only the barest hope you didn't flash him in all the commotion.
Drying off and changing as quickly as you can, you bring a clean rag and some warm water over to him. You're guessing whatever he asked you to inject him with is some kind of super-serum but you can't imagine being so filthy is doing any favors. The absurdity of this isn't lost on you. You're really about to clean up Batman's wounds.
It's a slow process. You take your time, periodically switching out the water. At some point you grab a different rag to clean up the torn edges of his armor as well, trying to keep everything as sterile as you can. You do your best â you're not exactly an expert at this.
Even as you clean him up it's difficult to come to terms with the fact that this is really happening. Following the aftermath of the Riddler a couple years ago, Batman went from freakish rumor to celebrated hero overnight. He still seemed more myth than real to you, but there's no question now. He is very real and seemingly very human. You hadn't been sure if the bat motif went deeper before.
You finish up and are left with the conundrum of what to do next. You're more exhausted than ever, but leaving him here just seems wrong. In the end you settle on dragging over your moon chair and grabbing a book. This isn't weird right? You're just making sure he doesn't die or convulse or something.
It was foolish of you to think you could stay awake. Between your preexisting fatigue and the adrenaline come-down, you don't make it through a paragraph before falling asleep.
â
The first few rays of sunlight streaming in your windows are what wakes you. Thereâs a moment of panic before registering that youâre just in your living room, safe and sound. You stretch and rub at the tight spot in your neck. Falling asleep curled up like that is never a good idea.Â
Your eyes drift over to the couch and you freeze. He isnât there. Had you imagined it all? Was last night actually some incredibly vivid dream or hallucination brought on by exhaustion?Â
Thatâs the final straw. No more doubles that roll into volunteer shelter shifts. Your body canât handle that toll anymore. You give another big stretch, your spine popping, and let out a small yelp when you turn to the kitchen and see Batman standing there.Â
If last night seemed ridiculous then you donât even know what to call this. What is there to say or think when the cityâs masked vigilante is standing in your kitchen like he belongs there? And how the hell is he even standing after the condition he was in?
He doesnât say anything. Youâre not sure what you expected. You donât know what to say either. It doesnât even feel like heâs trying to psych you out or anything, heâs simply⌠quiet. His eyes return to your letter that heâs holding.Â
âHey! Thatâs private!â
You rush into the kitchen, pulling the letter out from his hands. Gothamâs protector or not, he doesnât have the right to start reading your private correspondence.Â
He doesnât seem all that bothered by your anger. "Sorry, I probably shouldnât read ahead."
You stare at him in slight confusion and wonder as the pieces click together. Holy shit. How did you not put it together before? It seems so obvious now â like youâre in the fifth grade again realizing your pen pal Bruce is Bruce Wayne.
Bruce Wayne is Batman.
Bruce Wayne is Batman.
His letters stopped years ago, but you would still venture to say you know Bruce Wayne better than anyone else and it all fits. More wealth than he knows what to do with, a desire to continue his father's legacy to improve Gotham, and a deep, dark scar left on his heart all too young.Â
You always imagined he would start doing some serious philanthropy work, but you suppose this is in line with that. It's not all that shocking that he wants to do it with his own bare hands. Bruce has always wanted to do things himself.
In the eighth grade he told you about a computer he was working on, going into great detail to explain its complexities. It was going to be one of the most advanced systems ever designed once he was through with it. He also mentioned offhand how he nearly blew himself up with it. Becoming Batman seems right on target with that.
What doesn't make sense is why now? Why tell you at all, this many years in? He's let Batman remain a mystery to you for nearly five years. You didn't do anything new to gain his trust.
âI um, I think I need to sit down.â
You stumble back against your countertop looking for stability. From him showing up unannounced in your apartment to this, itâs all a bit much to take in. Youâre grateful Bru-Batm-Bruce doesnât immediately intrude on your personal space, giving you room to breathe. Thereâs a good chance you would have fully freaked out on him if he did.
You take measured breaths, careful to not let yourself spiral. Although, if there was ever an appropriate time to do so, this would be it. This is a lot to put on anyone, especially so abruptly. The answer to why Bruce couldnât use his incredible intellect to plan this better will evade you forever.
Once you can trust yourself to not start panicking again, you look back over at him. You have no idea what comes next. This is not how you ever imagined meeting Bruce. You thought maybe one day he would begin to write back again, leading to the decision to meet for a coffee or dinner. It seemed realistic â a bit more adult. This feels like something out of a dream.
You close your eyes again, trying to take it all in. Heâs still there when you crack them back open. To be sure, you give yourself a little pinch on your arm. If Bruce finds that odd, he doesnât say anything about it.Â
Needing to do something before addressing the elephant â or rather bat â in the room, you grab a glass down and pour yourself some water. It feels strange to ignore him, so you offer you uninvited guest water as well, to which he shakes his head no. It at least feels like a semi-normal moment in all of this.
From there, you wander back to your living room, taking up an end of the couch. Bruce follows, politely letting you lead the way. You wonder if heâs told many others or if he just knows this is best for you. You have absolutely no idea of where to begin.
âUm, hi I guess,â you venture.
Youâre by no means an expert in the expressions of Bruce Wayne, but youâre willing to bet thatâs the ghost of a smile on his lips. âHello,â Bruce says.
âSo you uh, youâre the Batman then? I feel like I should have been able to put that together sooner.â
âI would have been surprised if you did.â Youâre not certain on how to respond to that. Your shock must come across clearly on your face, because Bruce is quick to clarify. âIâve worked hard to keep people from putting the pieces together.â
Not many must know his true identity then. You canât say itâs surprising, given Bruceâs usual habits about divulging personal information.Â
Youâre not too proud to admit that sitting across from him in his full suit, even as beat up as it is, is incredibly intimidating. The reason for the bat motif evades you, but looking at him helps you to understand more. He looks large in the suit, an imposing figure by anyoneâs standard. His eyes stand out against all the black in stark contrast, the icy blue pinning you in place. It makes it a bit hard to think straight.
âWould you mind um, taking off theâ?â You hope youâre not overstepping. Heâs trusted you with his identity, but youâre not sure if that also means trusting you with his face.
Your breath hitches as his hands move. The cowl comes off in one fluid motion.Â
Youâve seen photos of him of course, even recently, but being face to face is something else altogether. The tabloids have at least one thing right. Heâs gorgeous.
His hair is long and in severe need of a brush after a night under the helmet, and yet it works. Thereâs black makeup hastily smudged all around his eyes, maintaining the contrast of his eyes. Stubble dusts his sharp jawline, drawing your attention to his plush lower lip. Youâre not sure if this has calmed your nerves or made them worse. He looks like he was just dragged out of a gutter, which for all you know he might have been, and itâs as though he stepped off the cover of a magazine.
You suddenly realize you should say something more instead of continuing to stare. âI guess I canât pretend it wasnât really you after all this,â you half-heartedly joke. Youâre not sure if it lands.
Bruce readjusts slightly on the couch, drawing your eyes back to his injuries. Whatever serum he had you pump him full of clearly did its job. The exposed skin still looks angry, but cuts are already stitching back together and there's no longer any active bleeding.
The state of his suit is something else. It looks like he was chewed up and spit back out only to be chewed up again. Massive holes are torn clean through, numerous singe marks across his chest. He's lucky to have not lost the pocket where he was keeping that emergency vial.Â
âAre you okay?â you ask, âI was a little worried youâd die on me in the middle of the night.âÂ
âIâll be fine. Iâve had worse.â You think that was meant to be comforting.
Once again, youâre not really sure where to go from here. It feels like your life has now been turned upside down from when he first stumbled into your apartment last night. Simply patching up Batman would have been plenty to deal with and process, but now you know his identity too? Calling this whole thing strange is underselling it.
It peaks your curiosity though.Â
âWhy now?â you ask.
Bruce's eyebrows twitch upward for just a moment. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, why tell me now? You've been Batman for a while and I can hardly remember the last time you wrote to me," you explain. "There's essentially no point in telling me so why? How can you even trust me?"
You wish Bruce wasn't so hard to read. It's nerve-wracking, unable to tell what he's thinking or feeling. It's also entirely unfair, knowing that your heart is on your sleeve.
"How long have we been writing to each other?" Bruce asks. You're sure the non-sequitur has a point, so you let it slide.
"Since we were nine. Although I'm not sure the past few years count as actual correspondence."Â
"It counts," Bruce asserts, âTrusting you is the easy part. Iâm sure my childhood secrets would have fetched a fair price to the right reporter."
Bruceâs mention of selling his letters off is the first time the thought has ever crossed your mind. It makes sense, you suppose. There were definitely times where that extra cash would have come in handy, yet it was never something you considered. You didn't ask for Bruce Wayne as your pen pal and he didn't ask for you â who are you to betray that sacred childhood bond?
âStill doesnât explain why youâre choosing now to tell me,â you say.
âYour address was the only one I could remember last night.â
You've never been more touched and more concerned at the same time. You caution moving slightly closer to him on the couch.
"You still didn't have to tell me," you say. Bruce looks confused, so you press on. "You woke up first. You could have easily left and told me sometime later."
"Would you have preferred that?"
You think on it for a moment. "Well I guess not but-"
"You deserved to know," he interrupts. "I came here and you cared for me having no idea who I was. The explanation was warranted."
He's not really wrong. The explanation does and doesn't make sense, but what seems to matter most is that Bruce is so certain of it. There's not a single trace of doubt â you're not sure what to do with so much confidence in yourself.
You think back to all the years of silence from him. So many years where you filled him in on nearly everything in your life while learning none about his. Any sane person probably would have stopped writing. Any sane person probably would have changed his PO box and yet, neither of you did.
Sitting across from him now on your well worn couch, you suppose you have an answer for all his unsent letters. You know what he was doing. Sure, the details are missing, but you know and for now that's plenty.
Something more significant than childhood letters are shared between you now. Neither of you are unaware of the shift.
"I need to get back," Bruce tells you. "Alfred is probably worried."
You remember the name of his childhood butler from his letters. It warms your heart to know he's still a large presence in Bruce's life. He always seemed to have the young heir's best interests at heart.Â
"Will I see you again?" you ask. You desperately hope this meeting isn't bound for more years of silence from his end.
Bruce slips his cowl back on. "I'll be in touch."
You nod, watching him walk across your small apartment back towards the window. The ever-present clouds in the Gotham sky should provide enough shadow for him to sneak away undetected. He's certainly had enough practice.
Bruce is half out the window when he turns back to you and asks, "Why did you keep writing?"
You don't have to think hard about your answer and give it almost immediately. "I didn't want you to be lonely."
His mask obscures most of his face. You hope that he's touched and not offended â the thought of growing up alone in that Tower just always struck you as empty.
Bruce gives you an almost imperceptible nod and then he's gone. You hope he won't be a stranger.
A week later, there's a letter in your mailbox.

Brazilâs capital Brasilia, designed by architects LĂşcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, it has since become one of the most famous and widely studied urban planning projects. Niemeyerâs cathedral, Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida; his building for the national parliament, the Congresso Nacional; and the cityâs 707-foot television tower have become icons of twentieth-century architecture. The entire city, marked by its cross-shaped layout and vast open spaces, was named a UNESO World Heritage site in 1987.
RenĂŠ Burri, an internationally celebrated Swiss-born photographer and member of the legendary Magnum agency, visited the city for the first time on a long journey around South America in 1958, when most of Brasilia was a vast building site. He returned many times over more than thirty years, documenting the growth and development of this urban utopia. Besides documenting the buildings in various stages of completion, Burri took portraits of Niemeyer and his workers and photographed Brasiliaâs street scenes and people: workers with their tools, machinery and building materials, pedestrians on the newly finished streets and squares, and aerial views from the air of the cityâs first slums abutting brand-new blocks of residential buildings. His images capture the strong sense of a new era and a vibrant atmosphere of hard work and strain; they reflect the huge dimensions of the landscape and the great scale of this project and its ambition to design and build a new capitalâand fill it with life.
Complete with an essay by eminent architect and scholar of architectural history Arthur RĂźegg, RenĂŠ Burri. Brasilia marks the cityâs fiftieth anniversary and allows readers to look at an extraordinary city through the eyes of an exceptional photographer.

PARIS: An Iranian court has handed jail sentences of over 10 years each to a young couple who danced in front of one of Tehranâs main landmarks in a video seen as a symbol of defiance against the regime, activists said on Tuesday.
Astiyazh Haghighi and her fiance Amir Mohammad Ahmadi, both in their early 20s, had been arrested in early November after a video went viral of them dancing romantically in front of the Azadi Tower in Tehran.
Haghighi did not wear a headscarf in defiance of the Islamic republicâs strict rules for women, while women are also not allowed to dance in public in Iran, let alone with a man.
A revolutionary court in Tehran sentenced them each to 10 years and six months in prison, as well as bans on using the Internet and leaving Iran, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said.
The couple, who already had a following in Tehran as popular Instagram bloggers, were convicted of âencouraging corruption and public prostitutionâ as well as âgathering with the intention of disrupting national security,â it added.
HRANA cited sources close to their families as saying they had been deprived of lawyers during the court proceedings while attempts to secure their release on bail have been rejected.
It said Haghighi is now in the notorious Qarchak prison for women outside Tehran, whose conditions are regularly condemned by activists.
Iranian authorities have clamped down severely on all forms of dissent since the death in September of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested for allegedly violating the headscarf rules, sparked protests that have turned into a movement against the regime.
At least 14,000 people have been arrested, according to the United Nations, ranging from prominent celebrities, journalists and lawyers to ordinary people who took to the streets.
The coupleâs video had been hailed as a symbol of the freedoms demanded by the protest movement, with Ahmadi at one moment lifting his partner in the air as her long hair flowed behind.
One of the main icons of the Iranian capital, the gigantic and futuristic Azadi (Freedom) Tower is a place of huge sensitivity.
It opened under the rule of the last shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in the early 1970s when it was known as the Shahyad (In Memory of the Shah) Tower.
It was renamed after the shah was ousted in 1979 with the creation of the Islamic republic. Its architect, a member of the Bahai faith which is not recognized in todayâs Iran, now lives in exile.

I visited a friend in Oxford this weekend, and having read Babel last year, RF Kuangâs incredible historical fantasy about the role of universities in British colonialism, it was impossible for me to admire the architecture there without thinking about its imperial legacy and persisting imperialist function, and the effect it had on me, on Oxford residents, and on Oxford students. I didnât take any pictures because I always forget to do that, so enjoy these ones I found on Google. đ
The main Bodleian building is probably the most iconic from Oxford, and itâs impossible to communicate the absolute grandeur of its presence when youâre actually there. Itâs also perhaps the building most similar in both form and function to Babel in RF Kuangâs story, it being also a central towering library. This is just one of several imposing and beautiful old buildings there though, all of which inescapably give you the impression of being part of - or at least in the presence of - a mighty, cultured civilisation. My friend said she felt the same thing in Durham, where we studied, but Oxford is on a whole other level.
The Oxford motto is apparently âfortis est veritasâ, or âthe truth is strongâ, which I did see around on various buildings. I couldnât believe how on the nose it was. It perfectly encapsulates what Kuang is critiquing, and they emblazon it proudly on their city: we use this knowledge to enrich ourselves through conquest; this beauty you see around you, this skilled craftsmanship, is both the product and the tool of empire. Knowledge and material is taken from other lands, developed by those with the privilege not to be concerned by more immediate things like food and shelter, and then used to conquer more lands.
I think it was the statues that really affected me though. There was something so intimidating about being surrounded by all these figures of âgreat menâ. Itâs hard not to feel fundamentally inferior. But what must it be like to see them when you know that youâve been invited to join their number, when youâre a student in their institution? I canât imagine itâs freeing. I have to think that - unless you resist it, as Iâm sure many do to varying degrees - it feels like a terrifying pressure to conform to the precise idea of greatness embodied and projected by those statues - a European, masculine, individualist, imperialist one. Itâs no wonder itâs often a very specific type of person who comes out of Oxford. Itâs no wonder so many of our politicians are from there.
If you havenât read Babel, I canât recommend it enough. I read Kuangâs new book, Yellowface, in a single sitting yesterday too, so read that one too. đ Theyâre both excellent critiques of intellectual culture while also being incredibly gripping reads. They combine nuanced characters with blunt didacticism, which in Yellowface in particular she reflects on and defends as a style, in a way that feels so edifying once you get over the popular prejudice against didacticism. Maybe we should be uncompromising in certain truths about the evils of colonialism, racism, and capitalism, ya know?
Both books were advertised to an almost obnoxious degree in every bookshop there, and my friend said everyone she talked to on her short course was talking about Babel, so I like to think thereâs hope.

capital worlds of the solar federation
Earth:Â
The ancestral homeworld of humanity is now becoming slowly overshadowed by human colonies on other worlds, the biggest of these being Sirius. Often called the new earth, most of earths wildlife and nature was transported to sirius as earths collapsing ecosystem threatens to cause a mass extinction of animal life.Â
Despite this, earth is still home to 150 billion humans and other species and holds important cultural sites. From the most ancient of ruins to the first megacity constructed in japan.Â
Most life on the planet is concentrated in these megacitys, with anything outside them considered uninhabitable. The abandoned ancient cities here have been overtaken by nature, and becoming home to gangs of looters scavenging anything left behind.Â
Earth is considered a very expensive world to life on, despite the standard of living for 99% of the population being far below that of human colonies across space.Â
The Richest of the population live in skyscrapers above the clouds, or floating cities in orbit. The air and rain in many of the megacitys is somewhat toxic, to be largely indoors. Parks are build to simulate the outside, and a artificial sky at least gives the illusion of a clear sky.
80% of wildlife has gone extinct, with the remaining few being transported to sirius.
Scientists have luckily managed to bring most animal species back from extinction trough cloning, however some are sadly lost forever.
However in recent years, thanks to the help of therian terraforming technology, a massive ecological restoration project has begun thats estimated to have restored earth by the year of 2850. So many hold hope that even in her rough condition, the homeworld of humankind can be saved.Â
Due to climate change, the average temperature of earth is around 19°c, wich caused mass flooding and eventually ecological disaster. The planet has 24 hour days with 365 days in a year.Â
Silakare:Â
The new homeworld of the Therians, silakare is a beautiful world of lush purple plant lifes and shallow warm oceans.Â
The world's surface is uninhabited, as the avian therians life in floating cities kilometres above the ground.
Silakut was the original homeworld, wich was destroyed by a supernova that was scientifically impossible and is still not understood. Silakare was once a dead moon with a barley existing atmosphere, but thanks to therians advanced technology they managed to turn it into the paradise it is today.Â
Animals from their old homeworld were genetically modified to life on the terraformed world, wich was transformed to resemble their old home as closely as possible.Â
Since then, the floating cities of silakare have become the official capital of the solar federation, with the largest of the cities being Orlos. Wich boasts a population of 240 billion and has a reputation for being a melting pot of cultures from all member species of the federation.Â
Silakare is relatively cold despite its tropical appearance, with temperatures around 9 degrees most of the year. A day has 32 hours with 409 days in a year.Â
Zadrik:Â
Homeworld of the Ilgorans. Its the smallest of the capital worlds, around the size of mars.Â
Its surface is covered in the ilgorans iconic city trees, enormous tree like plants specalized to grow into massive towers and house thousands of ilgorans.Â
In many ways zadrik is a lot like earth before the ecological collapse of the 25th century, with lush forests of red plants and the chirping of the slugbirds in their canopies.
Like the ilgorans, most life on zadrik is comparable to molluscoids. Most have a hard shell of sorts and posses a soft inside with hermaphroditic reproductive organs.Â
The planet itself is actually a moon orbiting the gas giant of Zuldrun, wich is often seen as the shell of a deity in ilgoran religions. Â
Zadrik is moderately warmer than earth at 31 degrees, with 19 hour days and 290 days in a year.Â
Thaul:
Home of the Vardee, and the biggest known habitable world in explored space.Â
This size is likely due to not being formed naturally, instead being artificially constructed 300 million years ago. The core is theorized to have been a smaller moon of planet that was artificially turned into a planetary core. Massive towers hundred of kilometers wide run from the surface to the core, likely as some sort of maintenance system.Â
Underneath the surface are tunnels that run underneath entire continents, and go even deeper into unexplored areas of the planet.Â
The vardee and many other animals of thaul likely descend from pets that these ancient âarchitectsâ kept.Â
This is evidenced my murals that depict these architects and being that looks strikingly similar to a lot of lifeforms inhabiting thauls oceans and continents. The architects themselves seem to have been somewhat humanoid, or at least bipedal. Sadly most murals are extremely eroded and damaged, making it hard to make out details.
Vardee build their cities in the massive towers that run to the core, wich are large enough for each tower to act as its own nation.Â
Most of the towers have only the first few hundred floors explored, many of wich have been flooded or house entire ecosystems of subterranean lifeforms. The deepest any explores got was floor 450 In the tower city of zulkran which is also the planetary capital. The bottom most layers were filled with overgrown ruins of buildings, home to entirely unknown blind animals. After DNA testing, it was revealed that these were actually the closest living relatives of the Vardee, with a 97% match.Â
The vardee rarely travel outside of the massive tower cities, meaning large portions of thaul are mostly uninhabited and wilderness. They take great care and pride in this wilderness, it even being a afterlife in some believes.
The average temperature of thaul is 16°c. Days are 30 hours long and a year lasting for 490 days.Â
Lirthak:Â
Home to the Olorans, and the most unique of the planetary capitals.Â
The planet itself looks like a barren rock from the surface, however underneath is a expansive cave system large enough to house forests, oceans and steppes of bioluminescent grass.Â
Olorans evolved in these steppes as lirthaks equivalent to herd animals, eating the blue glowing grass with their prehensile and dexterous tongues. This combined with having to find strategies to outsmart predators aswell as remembering the layouts of the cave system lead to the olorans extreme intelligence.
Over time they developed an advanced civilization with technological wonders rivalling the therians. With the cities becoming overcrowded however, they sought to see whats outside of the cave systems. They were aware that there was something outside of it, but this was only realy discover relatively recently thanks to modern technology. Problem was, there were only a few dozen exits out of the cave systems, and these lead to the uninhabitable surface of their homeworld.Â
So the top scientists and engineers got together to build massive domes on the surface, wich were then artificially filled with ecosystems and cities.Â
After this, oloran civilization was never the same. Soon after they constructed their first off world colonies, and travelled outside of their home system.Â
With the megacorporations that rule oloran civilization needing space for their manufacturing and housing the population of the overcrowded cities, two rings were build using material from lirthaks 2 moons. The olorans had no sentimental attachment to the moons due to not even knowing about their existence only decades before, and being as pragmatic as they are simply saw them as unused construction material orbiting their homeworld.Â
These rings now house everything from entire sectors of industry, housing, city sized malls, megacomputers, farming sectors and even artificially created beach resorts for tourists.Â
Lirthak and its two rings now have the largest population of any planet in the galaxy, with a grand total of 990 billion people calling it home. Its predicted to reach 1 trillion inhabitants by 2790.Â
The cave systems of lirthak are very cold due to not having sunlight, with average temperatures around -30°c. The rings are kept at around 20°c. A Lirthak day is 15 hours with 270 days in a year.Â
