Watership Down author Richard Adams dies aged 96

Adams novel first published in 1972 becomes one of the bestselling children books of all time

Richard Adams, the author of Watership Down, has died aged 96.

A statement on the books official website supposed: Richards much-loved family announce with sadness that their dear father-god, grandpa, and great-grandfather passed away quietly at 10 pm on Christmas Eve.

The novel, firstly are presented in 1972, becomes one of the bestselling babies volumes of all time, selling tens of millions of simulates.

Adams did not begin writing until 1966, when he was 46 and working for the civil service. While on a vehicle journey with his daughters, he embarked telling them a story about groupings of young rabbits escaping from their fated warren.

In an interview with the Guardian two summers ago, the author echoed: I had been put on the spot and I started off: Formerly there used to be two rabbits announced Hazel and Fiver. And I merely took it on from there.

It was reached into an animated cinema in 1978, and the subsequent year the films theme song Bright Eyes, sung by Art Garfunkel, topped the UK plots for six weeks.

The statement announcing his death quoted a excerpt from the end of his best-known undertaking. The author, born on 9 May 1920 in Berkshire, too wrote Shardik, The Girl in a Swing and The Plague Dogs. The latter explores animal rights through the narration of two puppies that escape from a laboratory.

Adams recruited at Worcester College, Oxford, in 1938. But when the second world war broke out, he enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps, invited to participate in Palestine, Europe and the far east.

He returned to complete his considers, gaining a degree in modern record, before find a job as a civil servant in the dwelling and local government ministry in 1948.

He was also president of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Swine from 198082. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Literature in 1975.

A new animated TV mini-series of Watership Down, co-produced by the BBC and Netflix, is due to air next year in four one-hour parts.
