[ad_1] Shreyas Iyer with Venky Mysore after winning the last IPL (PC: X) Shreyas Iyer was one of the most-talked-about players in the IPL retention process. So was Andre Russell. And Phil Salt. Why did KKR not retain Iyer? Why did they pay the maximum for Rinku Singh – more than for Sunil Narine and Russell? Were they not in touch with Iyer, as some reports claimed? Did Iyer ask for an exorbitant amount of money as some others have suggested? The man to answer each of these questions was Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR. In his first interview since the process ended, Mysore answered all the tough questions. Excerpts from the conversation: Boria: Why did you not retain Shreyas Iyer? He was your skipper. He led you to the title. So why not retain him? Venky Mysore: Shreyas Iyer was the first name in our retention list. However, the retention process isn’t a one-way street. It is not just about the franchise. It is also about the player wanting to be retained, to continue with the franchise. Of course Shreyas was the first name in our list. He was the skipper. That’s why we got him in 2022. Even when he was injured, we had made it clear that the captaincy was there for him to take back. So you can very well understand. However, there are often things that you don’t control. If a player wants to test his market value, and the auction is the best marketplace to do that, it is always fair to let him to do so. That’s what we at KKR have always believed in, and have backed our players. At a personal level, I share a very good rapport with Shreyas, but it is also true he should have the freedom to decide. Boria: So, clearly you are telling me it was his call. Do you feel let down or disappointed by this? After what KKR has done, even waiting for him to recover and captain the team, do you feel hard done by? Venky Mysore: These are harsh words. I don’t think we should look at it that way. Rather, we should all accept that things did not work out. Despite the best of intentions at times, things happen and that’s how it is. This is how things operate at times, and you need to accept that and move on. Boria: Tell me the Andre Russell story. Even we, and I will put my hand up here, had heard from strong sources that you were considering releasing Russell. Clearly, that wasn’t the case. Was there any doubt on Russell? Venky Mysore: Sunil Narine has been playing for us for more than a decade. Andre is playing for us for close to a decade. They play for all our other franchises as well, and have won many titles with us. They have both won many MVPs in the IPL. So the truth is it was a no-brainer that both will be retained. It is also about the brand – they are identified with the purple and gold. The fans love them both. And their contributions speak for themselves. So there was never any debate over retaining them. And that’s why we did not react. Even when Andre had the issue with WADA, we had a contract ready for him. He says that very fondly. You will see some of these players play for the purple and gold for as long as they play. That’s how it is. That’s how a brand is built. Venky Mysore: (Jumps in). In fact, I will even tell you we did not want a mega auction. Why should we? Why should it be that we have to leave more than two-thirds of our squad? Literally, three-fourths. I am part of this system and yet it takes me three to four games every season to figure out who is playing for who. Think about the fans. How will loyalty be built? We had suggested to the BCCI that there should be a mini-auction and not a mega auction, for that’s how you build brands and create loyalty.
When fans scream ‘Andre! Andre!’ or ‘Rinku, Rinku!’, you know they are doing so because they identify with these players. It is essential we have these players with us. With the mega auction, you are forced to leave three-fourths of your squad and that’s why we were opposed to it. Boria: You mentioned Rinku Singh. How come you are paying him the maximum money? More than Sunil or Andre? Venky Mysore: There is nothing really to read into it. Rather, think of his story. He came to us for 55 lakhs. Then went up to 65 lakhs. Now, he is one of the most-loved cricketers and all of 70,000 fans chant his name. He is a national team player and deserves every bit of it. These are stories we are proud of, and it was essential we recognise his growth and celebrate that. Boria: Who are the players you had the most difficulty releasing? Phil Salt is one name that comes to mind. Mitch Starc. Venky Mysore: We wanted to retain at least eight to nine players. You also need to mention Vaibhav Arora. Think how he got us important wickets in the play-off stages – semi- final, final. His contributions can never be forgotten. That’s what I am saying, you can’t just leave these players who have been with you. But then, rules are rules and you need to function within them. It isn’t ideal, but it is as it is. Boria: Finally, you have lost half your coaching staff – Gautam [Gambhir], Abhishek [Nayar] and Ryan [ten Doeschate] – to the Indian team. Venky Mysore: And not the first time. Some say this is a feather in our cap, and I tell them we don’t need such feathers anymore. But then, we have always encouraged them to grow and will never stand in the way of growth in their careers. We still have a very strong group in Chandru Pandit, Bharath Arun and Carl Crowe, and have also identified a fielding coach. We will make up for sure. There is nothing to worry. Most Wickets In IPL History - OneTurf News
The Indian Premier League 2024 season has reached the business end, and the biggest talking point this year has been the dominance of the bat over the ball, with batting-friendly pitches, record-breaking totals, shocking strike rates, and sixes galore being the norm of the season. While Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders have taken the cricketing world by storm, others like the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been poor with the ball and are languishing at the bottom of the table. There is a saying that batters win you matches, but it is the bowlers who win you tournaments. There’s constant pressure on bowlers to give their best, as even a tiny mistake can end the team’s campaign. Having said that, world-class bowlers have performed well, showcasing their experience and taking wickets at crucial junctures. While some of the experienced bowlers have gone for runs in the IPL 2024 season so far, let’s take a look at the list of bowlers who have taken the most wickets in IPL history to date.
Top 3 bowlers with the most wickets in IPL history
Yuzvendra Chahal — 200 Wickets Breaching new milestones in his entertaining T20 career, Indian wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal entered his name into the history books by taking his 200th IPL wicket in match 38 of the IPL 2024 season between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians on Monday. The spin wizard dismissed MI’s Mohammad Nabi to become the first player in the history of IPL to take 200 wickets. The wily wrist spinner has been part of three teams IPL sides, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals. However, Chahal came into the limelight when he consistently took wickets for RCB, especially at their batting-friendly home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite his record performance, RCB did not retain Chahal. The 33-year-old leg spinner ended up winning the Purple Cap playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022 season, taking 27 wickets. He is currently in the sixth position for most wickets in IPL 2024. While talking about Chahal’s overall IPL stats, he has an impressive economy of 7.8 and a bowling average of 22.12.
Dwayne Bravo — 183 Wickets Former Chennai Super Kings’ pace bowling all-rounder Dwayne Bravo is right at the top in the 2nd spot when it comes to the bowlers with the most wickets in IPL history, having taken as many as 183 wickets from 161 games at an economy of 8.39. The West Indies superstar holds the joint first position on the list of highest wicket-takers in IPL in a single season alongside Harshal Patel. The star all-rounder took 32 wickets in 18 games during the IPL 2013 season. His impressive bowling performance helped the Chennai Super Kings qualify for the finals. While talking about his entire IPL playoffs career, Bravo has taken 28 wickets, with a strike rate of 13.8 and an economy rate of 8.21 in 19 matches.
Piyush Chawla — 183 Wickets Former India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla is the third-highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League history. Talking about his overall IPL stats, Chawla has taken 183 wickets from 188 games at a fantastic economy rate of 7.97. In the IPL 2023 season, the 34-year-old wrist-spinner picked 22 wickets from 16 matches at an economy of 8.11 for the Mumbai Indians. Chawla has played for the Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in his IPL career so far.

Wanindu Hasaranga's exclusion from the Royal Challengers Bangalore's retained players list raised quite a few eyebrows. RCB went all-out for the Sri Lankan all-rounder in the 2022 IPL Auction, shelling out INR 10.75 Crore. He was the team's primary spinner. Now that Hasaranga is in the auction pool, several teams could bid for his services. Hasaranga's ability to bat in the middle-order, along with his lethal variations in bowling, makes him a deadly T20 player. He can hit the ball long when required, giving his team flexibility in picking an additional specialist player to cover their weaknesses.Immediate ImpactWanindu Hasaranga had shown promise from a young age. He was a part of the 2016 Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup squad, where he took 7 wickets. He was particularly impressive in the match against England, picking up 3 wickets for 34 runs to restrict the opposition to 184.In the initial days of his career, he was known more for his batting than his bowling. He was a capable middle-order batsman who could score quickly. Playing for Colombo Cricket Club in 2017, he scored 586 runs in the Premier League Tournament. As he started working on his bowling, he became known as a prominent all-rounder. It became impossible for the selectors to ignore him after that.He made his international debut against Zimbabwe in 2017 and became the third debutant in ODI history to pick up a hat-trick.The RCB associationHasaranga couldn't find any takers in his first IPL auction in 2021. But he was brought into the Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for the injured Adam Zampa. He played just 2 matches in the season and didn't pick up any wickets. RCB, though, had a long-term plan in mind for Hasaranga. In the subsequent season, he played 16 matches for RCB as they reached the Playoffs and fell just one step short of making the final. Hasaranga claimed 26 wickets in the season at an average of 16.54. He also added his first five-wicket-haul to his name.He missed the first part of the 2023 season as Sri Lanka were touring New Zealand at the time. On returning to the side, he didn't make a big impression. In 8 matches, he took just 9 wickets at an average of 28.67. Perhaps RCB found it hard to justify his high price tag after this performance and released him ahead of the Mini Auction.Teams that could target Wanindu HasarangaSunrisers Hyderabad have two Indian spinners in Mayank Markande and Washington Sundar. But their spin attack is still nowhere as deadly as their pace attack. Hasaranga's addition could elevate the overall quality of the bowling attack and make it among the most lethal in the tournament. They have Rs 34 crore to work with, so they can go big on Hasaranga.Delhi Capitals' spin department has arguably two of the strongest left-arm spinners in the game - Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. The addition of a right-arm leg-spinner will add another dimension to their attack. Hasaranga's ability to push the ball through can also be handy at the team's home ground - the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Delhi Capitals have a purse of Rs 28.95 at their disposal. They can gamble on Hasaranga if they believe he is the missing piece in their attack. The Punjab Kings have gone for youth over experience in their retentions ahead of the 2024 mini-auction. They have Rahul Chahar as a wrist spin option. But he doesn't have the mystery of Hasaranga. Their backup option, Liam Livingstone, could have a bad day since he is not a regular spinner. They will need experience in their spin department, particularly when visiting stadiums where the track offers turn. Punjab Kings have Rs 29.1 crore in their kitty and space for two more overseas players in their squad.Topics mentioned in this article

IPL 2024 Auction: Gujarat Titans Captain Hardik Pandya Is Rejoining Mumbai Indians For All-Cash Trade, Says Report
In what could mark one of the most significant trades in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, the captain of Gujarat Titans, Hardik Pandya, is reportedly poised to return to his former franchise, the Mumbai Indians (MI), ahead of the IPL 2024 auction set for December. This anticipated move is set to be an all-cash trade, with MI covering Hardik's entire salary and an undisclosed transfer fee to GT. Notably, it's speculated that Hardik might receive half of the transfer fee, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Hardik Pandya's IPL salary stands at around $1.8 million, approximately equivalent to Rs 15 crore. However, both franchises have maintained silence regarding the specifics of this lucrative deal. If finalized, this trade would mark the first instance of an IPL-winning captain switching teams via trade. Hardik previously led the Titans to their debut IPL trophy in 2022, and in 2023, guided the team to the final where they fell short against MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
For this trade to materialize, MI must have Rs 15 crore available in their purse, but currently, they possess only Rs 0.05 crore. Each of the ten franchises is allotted Rs 5 crore for the forthcoming auction. To acquire the remaining Rs 10 crore required to bring Hardik on board, MI will need to release some players.
During his two-season tenure with the Titans, Hardik showcased his prowess by amassing 833 runs in 30 innings, boasting an impressive average of 41.65 and a striking rate of 133.49. Additionally, he contributed to the team's bowling strength, securing 11 wickets with an economy rate of 8.1. Presently, Hardik is sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during India's ODI World Cup campaign.
Prior to this potential trade, only two captains had been traded - R Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane - when Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) exchanged players.
Hardik commenced his IPL journey with the Mumbai Indians in 2015. However, ahead of the 2022 mega auctions, MI had to let Hardik go as they could retain only a limited number of players. GT owners, CVC Capital, secured Hardik from the pool along with Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill.
Notably, Hardik clinched four IPL titles with MI in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 respectively. With Rohit Sharma potentially nearing retirement, MI might see Hardik's return as an opportunity for him to lead the side in the forthcoming years.

Tata IPL2023
The 2023 mega auction of the IPL took place in Bengaluru in December. The most expensive player was Sam Curran, bought by Punjab Kings for ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million), the most-paid player in the history of the league. Ahead of the auction, all the IPL franchises published their list of retained players in November 2022. Some of the big names that were retained in the 2023 edition include MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Sunil Narine, Glenn Maxwell, Andre Russell, and Jasprit Bumrah. Gujarat Titans are the defending champions.
Tata Group retains as the title sponsor of IPL 2023
The IPL Governing Council announced the new IPL season after the IPL 2023 auction was completed. Aside from the promise to be bigger, better, and more enthralling, Tata Group was announced as the new title sponsor for the Indian Premier League. Tata Group replaces Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo as the title sponsor for the IPL 2022 and 2023 editions. In 2018, Vivo came on board as the title sponsor till 2022; however, due to tensions at the border, the contract with Vivo was paused in 2020.
New rules in Tata IPL 2023
The BCCI stated that it "will preserve IPL's position at the forefront of innovative cricket and continue the growth of the T20 format" in a memo announcing the new umpire signal and rules of the Impact Player.
The BCCI has informed franchises that following the toss, as was recently implemented in SA20, captains may select their playing XI. Before the toss, the captains were required to declare the starting Eleven. Expanding the DRS's scope to include wide balls and no balls is another new regulation. The rules of the game specify that "a player may also be permitted to review any decision made by on-field umpires concerning wide or no ball."
The Biggest Change in This IPL is the introduction of Impact Player. This is how the rule will play out. According to the BCCI, “The captain will identify the impact player to the umpire, and the umpire will signal in the manner as depicted in the above image indicating that the Impact player is being introduced. Teams can name four substitutes, or impact players, in their squad for a match in addition to my playing 11. One of these may be used as a substitute during the match.
It adds, "The Impact Player can be introduced (i) before the start of the innings; or (ii) after completion of an over; or (iii) in case of a batter, at the fall of the wicket or the batter retiring at any time during the over (as provided in Clause 1.8 (iv) below). The bowling team can also get an Impact Player during the fall of the wicket, but that Impact Player will not be permitted to bowl the remaining balls in that over if the wicket has fallen mid-over."
Changed Format- 10 clubs divided into two groups
IPL 2023 Format: The IPL 2023 edition will follow the same format as last year, but the venues will change. The IPL 2023 format details are as follows:

After the group stage, a four-game playoff series using the Page playoff system is played. In the playoffs, there will be four games played:
First qualifying round: the matchup between the top two teams from the group stage.

Two groups of five teams each are created from the ten teams.
The groups and who plays who in each group once and twice were chosen at random.
Each team competes in 14 games during the group stage, playing the other four teams in their group twice (once at home and once away), the other four teams once, and the remaining team twice. IPL Points Table System: A team that wins a game receives 2 points. There will be no points awarded to the losing team. In the event of a tie or a deadlock, both teams will receive one point.
After the group stage, a four-game playoff series using the Page playoff system is played. In the playoffs, there will be four games played:
First qualifying round: the matchup between the top two teams from the group stage.
Between the groups' third and fourth-placed teams, in the elimination round.
Between the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator is Qualifier 2.
