some 20-something internet rando who has only ever watched/read Twilight, True Blood, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Actually vampires are a metaphor for queerness/blood-borne illnesses and that's why I think we should write more stories about vampires of color and poor vampires and non-predatory gay vampires and--

me, a 20-something internet rando who has only ever watched Blood Red Sky and Castlevania and read "Sunshine" by Robin McKinley: INCORRECT. Vampires are a metaphor for privilege. Pop culture vampires are overwhelmingly white, male, rich, and hundreds of years old for a reason. They are "ultimate predators" in every culture's mythos. They feed on those most at risk--children, pregnant women, "thralls" (essentially slaves or indentured servants). They are violent and greedy and cruel because that is what power, privilege, and money do to real people. You are missing the point of vampires when you turn them into Poor Little Meow Meows.
