Mostly because you can go ham with the costumes
#if there's no reason to set a play/opera in the 20th/21st c then don't#I've seen the best operas of past generations Ruined by being set in the '50s for no good reason#in some cases it can be interesting but I think you should be able to justify your choice well#and saying that the story Speak of Always Relevant Dilemmas isn't reason enough. It actually makes a good case for setting it in the past#because then it shouldn't matter When it's set but if the setting's modern it'll be harder to suspend your disbelief imho#like why would two middle class guys in the '50s have a gun duel and have everyone treat it as normal (Eugene Onegin)#plus guns really do not hold up with swords and daggers (biggest pet peeve about NTL Julius Caesar)#it's just ugly#it's a stage!#personal#teatro
