#I've said my piece and the weird anon quotient is a wee bit high

Probably a blasphemy in this fandom but I don’t really see anything particularly interesting or groundbreaking in Alec? I mean, he spends most of s1 (and even later) as an antagonist and a foil for the good guys. Lexa (the100) also assumed this role and if you count all the shady antagonistic (initially coded) gay characters in Hollywood history… well :) The coming out story is not particularly new either. It doesn’t help that the show invalidates it (intentionally or not) by insisting the
shadow world is not homophobic. Romance is not inherently bad but a gay man doing emotional support or relationship stuff is hardly rare (Schitt’s Creek or QaF do it better, for example). Turning Alec into a vampire could’ve been the saving grace, but alas!
Look, I debated taking this seriously, but:
I’m sure there’s someone out there willing to take issue with this. It Is Known that the most exhausting thing about Alec is Alec fandom, and I fully admit I’ve done my share of kicking at the mile-high pedestal some fans insist on putting him on.
But I’m fucking tired. If you want to hear how clever you are for interrogating the text from this totally novel perspective of this main protagonist is an antagonist, actually, find someone else to do it. If you want to debate how Alec’s character is boring and worn-out because there’s a couple of other similar characters somewhere in the Western TV canon, some more enterprising soul will bring their banners to your weird hill to die on.
I’m glad you’re sensitive to queer-coding villains, but nah @ trying to compare QaF, a queer soap opera, to SH, a YA urban fantasy as if these are the same genre and have similar character distribution and plots/themes/arcs. Shockingly, a show about gay men’s feelings and relationships might have several gay dudes emotionally supporting each other.
I have my opinions and you have yours, anon. Me disagreeing with you on fictional characters doesn’t mean I hate you, specifically, as a person. Please separate your identity from your tastes in fiction. I’m tired of telling random people on the internet that I seriously cannot validate them as human beings because they don’t like the same fictional things I like (ETA for clarity:) by agreeing with their opinions on fictional things.
Thanks for not calling me names and for the lack of gratuitous ad hominem, but no. Not today, anon, and tomorrow is not looking that hot, either.
