There is a whole host of shortened and endeared versions of Vladimir! The most commonly used in close family situations is 'Vova'. So that's probably what Vlad's parents called him when he was younger.

Also, I just realized halfway through that the nickname was for Dan, not Vlad. I then realized that Dan is half Vlad, so maybe a nickname combo bt Vova and Danny? Vanny? Dova??
