something else I don't like about drunk scenes is that they're supposed to show someone's 'true self' because that isn't even true! maybe drunk people are uninhibited but choices matter more to someone's character than impulses or ~hidden desires~ or even thoughts they wouldn't otherwise verbalize. I'm not saying that's what's happening here because I don't really remember it's just another reason I dislike those scenes

jc's killer line "who is this special guest? can you introduce me?" really loses its bite when we're not actually focused on jc's face. it sounds so casual, it's like jc really doesn't know. cql really did this scene better jc is snarling. the contempt rolling off him is palpable

wwx really did the 😜 at jl. actually if I had to describe his day to day personality it would just be that emoji. god he's annoying

are they going to keep the fact that mxy was rumored to have been a sex pest to his half-brother or is this adaptation going to quietly change that too

I mean, maybe he wasn't? but given what he went through, he should have been

that's something else that really annoys me about this show. he IS a deeply traumatized character due to all the horrible things that were done to him and that he's seen and that he's had to do. but you wouldn't know it because he literally does not act as if he's undergone anything significant. it's slightly better in the novel since he does talk about being sick of taking care of everyone else's problems and not being the one who gets priority, lwj telling the juniors that he's not some kind of superhuman and he needs rest too, and in the extras when wwx tells the kids that someone in pain sometimes just needs to express it. but it's not good writing here! it's not accurate depictions of the kinds of things they want us to believe happened to this character! even in the novel I found it oddly lacking

and I thought the first season did a really great job of this with myu, and we did get a short flashback with xxc's parallel in s3, but overall it's just so bizarre to watch someone not respond to the things they've been through. cql does get a lot of criticism because wwx is "too sad" but that's literally just a realistic response to the things that happened to him, which were ramped up in cql anyway. it's not the same as the book, but it's much more grounded and without that arc of healing and recovery from trauma I think the story loses a lot. and I don't find a story about someone who's been through a lot but is fine because he already died a very engaging one, and I'm not really interested in any message that would send

tgcf is a lot better about this with xl! hc not so much but on his end, he did have 800 years to deal with it

anyway, the scene where everyone is gossiping about mxy, and lwj gives wwx food and gestures to just ignore them, that was a nice scene too

jesus fucking christ. you really didn't need to do that, donghua. inserting homophobia into a censored work is a terrible idea. there wasn't even a proper response that wwx gave

but lwj teasing wwx is really funny. that's closer to the novel than cql was too

wwx being like oh we need to get that kid some friends is right from the novel too. it's hard for popular kids to understand the struggle. it hurt to read bc wwx really did want to help he just doesn't really get it

qin su appeared for three shots, had no lines, and then immediately learned of her son's death and her husband's identity. she will die next episode, probably after a brief and miserable confrontation with jgy

don't love that scene but the donghua even tones it down it wasn't a kick he just pushes him a little and looks melodramatic. and when sober he's never acted jealous or overbearing so he still looks better than in the book
