The Christmas Project (2016)

Ok, so this one is pretty good, but we have a lot of players, so I'm just going to explain the connections all right now. There's the Buckley family, mother Pam (Alison Akin Clark), father Ralph (Brian Neal Clark), and sons, oldest to youngest, Simon (Anson Bagley), Matthew (Jacob Buster), Peter (Josh Reid), John (Cooper Daniel Johnson), and their dog Farding. The Buckleys' new neighbors are the Goodmans (we don't meet the parents), oldest daughter Monica (Caitlin E.J. Meyer), Juniper (Grace Hallows), and Allen (Evan Clark). Then we have the mean kids, the Hagbarts: Finn (Gabe White), Feeb (Skyler M. Day), Fae (Caroline Labrum), and Francie (Abigail Baugh). Other contributing characters are Mrs. Honeywell (Pam Eichner), teacher of Matthew and Finn, Earl (Marlon V. Gaines), bus driver for the children and Viet Nam war vet, and Morris (Clint Pulver), the local mail delivery person.

Matthew is our main character. He has a lot of resentment towards Simon because Simon is the most spoiled, entitled oldest child I've ever seen. I think Matthew's right, he's probably adopted. Peter is a weirdo who carries around a chicken named Rosie who he is obsessed with. John is the baby, a pawn in the schemes of Matthew and Simon. I'm not totally sure on ages because Matthew and Simon look the same age to me (12), and I don't remember it saying specifically. Anyway, so Finn is a bully. And apparently he wasn't in Matthew's class until this year because he got held back. Matthew is frustrated that Mrs. Honeywell shows Finn so much favoritism when Finn is tormenting everyone else for existing, but we learn more later. Finn also starts fights on the bus, which Earl promptly breaks up. Earl becomes Matthew's confidante during the movie, which is weird, but if my teacher looked just like my mom, I might turn to the bus driver. There's also this constant side plot of the Christmas Catalog with all the toys in it. Matthew wants it first because Simon steals it and hides it so that none of his brothers can get any of the good toys. I'm not really sure how that works though. Whatever. Every day, Matthew (and sometimes one of his brothers) waits by the mailbox for Morris to show up.

When the Goodmans move in, Simon and Matthew are both instantly infatuated with Juniper. Again, not sure how old she is, but I think she's either between Simon and Matthew or she's the same age as Simon. Juniper is definitely more into Matthew, but she's still nice to Simon (he thinks it means she likes him, but he seems to accept at the end that she has feelings for Matthew). Monica is the angry, but not really that angry, teenager, and Allen is in Matthew's class. They quickly become besties even though Allen is a dweeb (and I don't use that word lightly).

So Pam has this tradition for their family called elving. There's even an oath. It's very culty. But it's basically they pick a family who would appreciate a little something for Christmas, drop off goodies and presents at night, ring the doorbell, and run. Ding dong ditch but they leave loot. It's also relevant that Pam is like 8 months pregnant. So this year, she picks the Hagbarts. The boys don't really understand why, I'm sure they know the Hagbarts don't have a lot of money, but they're otherwise clueless. At first, the Hagbarts have no idea who is leaving them all this stuff. THEN ONE NIGHT Pam thinks that she's going into labor, so she and Ralph go to the hospital while Monica is in charge of the boys (plus her own siblings is 6 kids, no thank you). Monica decides to drive them to deliver the stuff to the Hagbarts, but she drives up too close to the house and Finn sees comes outside and sees Matthew. If it were me, I'd be more embarrassed than angry that someone thought I needed help, but Finn is a boy probably hitting puberty, so he goes even harder on the bullying. Matthew is PISSED until Earl gives him his special pen (not a euphemism) because the pen is mightier than the sword. Matthew also finds out some interesting things about Finn. So Matthew writes Finn a letter (the contents are not disclosed unfortunately) so that they better understand each other I guess? Oh also, at some point, Rosie disappears. I 100% thought that the parents killed her on purpose to eat, but they didn't. Peter is obviously horrified and devastated from the second she vanishes.

Overall, gotta go for a main character who is a writer. 4 stars.
