The end of camp
We have reached the end of April 2019 Camp NaNoWriMo!! I have technically "won", but the point of NaNoWriMo is just to get writing.
I am currently in the middle of substitute teaching, lesson planning because I am trying to think optimistically, and preparing for my job interview. And in the middle of being in the middle of all of this, I am writing, or at least, I am attempting to write.
These are the fruits of my camping trip in an I-tried summary:
The Ghosts of Fab, a screenplay
This is kind of a parody of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and Netflix's Queer Eye. The short description of this is a young man is shortsighted by the loss of a family member. He descends into a tunnel of depression only living for work. His friends all worry about him, and a year later, he is still in a rut. Instead of being around people, he has discovered Netflix and buries himself in his room after work. He discovers a new Netflix original and binge watches the heck out of it, falling into a deep slumber. Each night, he is visited by five very positive and life-changing people who take him on a journey of self-care.
A Unicorn, a playscript
There is a serial killer called the Unicorn on the loose, and two people waiting outside of nowhere might become the next victims. Problem is, the Unicorn could be anyone, and these two people aren't passed suspicious.
Untitled (because I'm bad at naming things), a playscript
Joanna is new in town and quickly befriends her neighbor Alex. He introduces her to his friends, Mia, Maia, and Tommy, the latter two who immediately like her. When she unexpectedly dies, they are all heartbroken and struggle to mourn her. Loosely based on Dolly Parton's Jolene.
Greek Week, a fanfiction-esque novella screenplay
Wes transfers to his best friend, Mic's, university eager to escape his recent past. When he bumps into his high school crush/bully, it brings back a rush of longing for that past. Parker is the top dog at Graham University. He holds the coveted title of Greek God within Graham's Greek Life community, and he serves as an ambassador of the university. Wes turns back up into his life and old feelings rehash. Mic is competing to be the next Greek God in the Greek Week challenge. Apart from what it means to him and the great boost on the resume, he's trying to impress Parker's unimpressed friend, Karter. Karter wants nothing to do with Greek Life, but Mic is making it hard to ignore him. Ben is just trying to get through his senior year. Finn is intrigued by the new guy in his fraternity. Wes is turning minds and heads. A really gay parody of the Thai dramedy series 2 Moons. Once I have finished writing this, I plan to try to write it into a screenplay once I figure out how to do that.
The Princess and the Pea, a one-act
A parody of Once Upon a Mattress with a scandal, a ridiculous contest, a perilous festival, and a startling double murder. Plus, a potential in-law family who is as crazy as the fairy tale about them.
With the combination of these five works-in-progress, we hit a bit over 15k words. It was the first time I have ever succeeded in something NaNo, and I hope to be able to match that success with our next Camp. I also realize that this is the kind of material that is more found on a vlog-style format, but I'm really bad at talking to a camera, and my face is bad. More anxiety-ridden, stream-of-consciousness-like thoughts to follow with the summer approaching and a failed audition and interview coming up *insert crying emoji here* I'm going to go eat, now.
