Possibilty that the 2 brothers or their whole family is in a cult and that's the reason their father left

The heart shaped plant is possibly possesing their mom

Said heart shape plant might have been pretending to be the 2 brothers mom and manipulated them to do evil things so it can spread

Other possibilty for mutant animals: Cows ate the heart shaped plant while eating grass which caused it to mutate. Pigs eat anything so it probably accidentally ate it or was fed it

Mostlikely tried to give it to the hitch hikers they caught a while ago

The cows used to be human (as stated in the wiki) possibility of those 5 cows to be the hitch hikers.
