It's been 6 months since I first saw newsies omg????
6 months since I sat in my seat in the interval and flicked through my programme to find the guy playing Crutchie since I'd already decided he was my favourite and found the profile that said "Matthew Ducket" and immediately had the deep gut feeling my brain was about to drop whatever it was holding like a hot rock and latch onto the show and his acting for dear life.
6 months since I was incredibly right about that fact 😀
#and now I'm here. hi!!!#in those six months I've found media attached to every part of Matthew Duckett's career except the Warwick castle stint#(thank you riff specifically for help with the taming of the shrew clip u were a lifesaver for that one)#I've full on MET HIM#newsies has brought me so many awesome friends!!!! on Quotev as well as more recently tumblr#and the music has been there for me when I really needed it#I'm glad I saw newsies. i didn't know much about it at the time but i think that was the best way I could have been introduced#also I got a George!Jack performance which was super fun!!!! :D#and I'd seen Lucy Young before when Bugsy Malone came to the Marlowe so seeing her again was super awesome too!!!#me.txt

Hi! So sorry I haven't replied and this will probably be a shorter ask because I may forget some things. I'm so glad you had a great time and enjoyed all of your shows and I really enjoyed reading about them and your opinions and experience! 🩷
Omg CATS was your favorite!? Lol I do like it amd some of the songs are good and catchy..I did like seeing the dancing up close when I saw it on tour too. How do the songs work..was it still the same musical with songs and costumes just with more sophisticated ballroom dancing? Or was it more like drag glam costumes or something and what about the makeup..no whiskers? lol. I'm kinda confused how that would work but Im glad it worked and you enjoyed it so much. It seems really fun audience environment and energy throughout. What was Memory like since it's a slower song? Or even the staging..it doesn't really have a lot of staging sets so I'm curious about that. However I guess it would or might be similar to the Cabaret environment and staging and with audience interaction too I guess so maybe it could work if they wanted to stage it again but I'm not sure. What do you think of the new Cabaret leads btw? I thought she didn't really look the part at first but I saw some photos and would be interested in hearing audios. I also don't know how she will be in it while doing press for Moana 2 though. I used to be a fan of Adam Lambert and love his voice and think he could amp up the craziness of the Emcee's antics or be similar to Alan Cumming. Emma Stone will always be the perfecly marvelous Sally stunt casting to me though.
Romeo and Juliet with Rachel Zegler is also opening soon and I am super curious about that. It's apparently a play but has some music from Jack Antonoff? Is it not songs..idk which is a shame cuz I love her voice and I loved her as Maria In West Side so I think it could be good. I only brought it up now cuz that also seems like some kind of modern reimagining like what CATS or Cabaret tried to do but not similar at all or is it just that they updated from Shakespeare language probably.
Anyway the Notebook number two! Love the url change btw!!! I loved reading about the staging and will hopefully see it on tour even though this cast seemed pretty amazing so I'm happy for you! But I think it's so special the show means that much to you. I didn't know all 3 actors or versions were on stage during that time though...that's so cool. Is it always like that in other scenes or just for I Wanna Go Back? I'm sad its closing and I'm not sure why it didn't last longer. Reading what you wrote and how you described it right down to the rain scene reminded me of how I actually feel about the Outsiders too. Like about the music not being really Broadway but it just fits the show so well and makes so much sense. That show is also emotional and resonates with a lot of people and both shows are based on popular movies and I love how the shows are so different from them too. My Days reminds me or has the same message sort of as Stay Gold. Both shows make me nostalgic too..idk if it's cuz of the movies though. Idk if I ever asked you how you felt about it compared to the movie though. Were you a big fan of the movie and nervous about the adaptation? I knew Ingrid Michaelson would probably make it good but I didn't imagine it would turn out so well. Even hearing about adding another young version instead of two made it seem so different but now it's just like it expanded the story or message compared to just comparing it to the movie if that makes sense. I know some of the cast talked about that but moving it to the 1970s instead of the 40s kinda still confuses me if you could expand on that? I think I read that somewhere but I could be wrong.
Also..I'm sorry for mentioning Outsiders again there cuz you haven't read it or listened and I'm afraid you won't like it cuz it's the popular musical but I do agree with Newsies similarities cuz of the fans and popularity, brotherhood theme, and the relationship is sort of similar. They also both have hot leads lol but that's all I'll say and not in a fangirl way or anything, but I do love the whole cast and think they're so talented. I think it's popular for a good reason though so I hope you love it. Its like a mix of Grease, West Side Story and Newsies to me so if you love those shows you'll hopefully like it. I know people have problems with the music though and that's kinda it's own thing I guess. I may be biased cuz the book, story and movie already mean a lot to me too. I hope you don't mind this part and that it doesn't come off as annoying and not pressure. Also maybe the Newsies comparison only makes sense to me. I once compared Moulin Rouge to Hadestown and how Hades was sort of like the Duke and the whole forbidden love can't be together mixed with the tragic ending haha. But now I think Gatsby is a pretty close comparison to Moulin Rouge plot and show vibes wise with actual similar kind of music. I'm so sorry you didn't get to see Hadestown! I would've loved to hear about Jordan Fishers performance but I have seen some clips aIready. I hope you feel better from the migraines by now and well rested!
Omg I'm sorry Aaron seemed like such a disappointment the night you went! That really sucks especially wanting to see him live. Do you think actors should just call out at that point or did you still enjoy it? How was Roxanne? I always wonder how much of a show is just on autopilot after doing it so much but I also understand actors can just have an off night vocally too and I think I would be sort of disappointed to have an understudy since I could only see it once so I hope it was still good! Im glad you enjoyed JoJo's performance at least. I can't remember if you've seen the show live before or not. I'm also happy about the new cast and would like to hear John Cardoza since I'm familiar with his voice now.
Oh Mary seems like a good time and funny show but I do get what you mean about only needing to see it once. I'm sure I would at least enjoy it but there is just so many shows to see but I do like hearing more about it. I hope maybe they'll post more clips so I could see the humor. I do like Conrad Rica more too.
I've only seen the movie version of Once Upon a Mattress but I bet the stage version isn't so different and I'm familiar with it and the story in general as and I only remember a few songs. I think Sutton Foster singing Shy would be good though and it would be a fun less serious show in between.
I did listen to Stereophonic and enjoy the music so much! Bright and Masquerade are so catchy and I still sing them all the time or they get stuck in my head. I also knew it was similar to Daisy Jones too and that reminds me I still never watched, read or listened to all the music of it yet. I kinda forgot about it whoops. It was probably one of my favorite cast albums I listened to as far as the music staying with me. I was more curious about what you felt about how long the show was, or felt? Did you think some could be cut? What were the mood of most scenes..arguments or something else? I just don't know how it would be over 3 hours but I guess there is some songs to break it up. Is that why it was lower in your list or just you were tired and is it pretty similar to watching a musical or not at all?
Wow this is probably hella long so now I will reply and continue in a part 2!!!
my beloved pink heart anon i need you to know that i always smile whenever i see you in my askbox but i did in fact chuckle when you said this would be a short ask and i got three messages 🤍
i know! i was surprised too that cats: the jellicle ball was my favorite — i was actually getting coffee with an old friend this week and she asked me about my trip and the shows i saw she was just so shocked when i told her that because everyone knows just how much i dislike the original work. i think there are some songs that are cut or some are sped up a little? i don't remember them doing the awfull battle of the pekes and the pollicles, at least? i don't know how familiar you are with ballroom culture (would recommend watching paris is burning if you're interested!) but it was really just staged as a competition! the stage itself was very minimal, but very, very cool — basically just a cat walk and then the "cats" (humans in the ballroom community who called themselves cats) would strut + dance. there was a screen and they would project like, what category of the competition was going on and who the cats were, which was really neat! memory is a slower song and it's grizabella going up the staircase and it's just so gorgeous and touching. and yes! very immersive! actors would come around to grab props or would just interact with the audience depending on where you were sitting and it was so so fun!
i haven't been following this production of cabaret closely! but i've heard that people quite like adam and auli'i! i still have to watch the emma stone cabaret boot in full (sent with invisible ink, hanging my head in shame, etc). i've heard she's so good!!
r+j is so ... because like, obviously a play that has been around for hundreds of years cannot be spoiled. but also why is every element of the staging already spoiled for me? they haven't even been in previews for A WEEK and i'm seeing twitter videos and tweets everywhere. i'm (obviously) not anti-bootleg but i don't think that shows should be posted on twitter like that because it's not a concert!!! and filmers know what they're doing! audience members who are taking their phone out to film is just not it! it's distracting! it looks very cool — have seen people calling it brat summer r&j, and i do really like rachel zegler, rooting for her success always! very intrigued to see what people say of it once it opens/is a little more set in stone.
i loveeee shows that do a little more expanding/reimaginging of "classic" or "older" shows, like spring awakening deaf west, oklahoma 2019, gay oklahoma from 2018, cats: the jellicle ball, etc. i think it's amazing how much more depth can be added to shows just by direction, casting, and staging — even if not much in the original text itself has changed. like it is one of the things that makes me love musical theatre as an artform; how it's constantly growing and changing and improving and also the same.
for my beloved notebook: hehe thank you! and i managed to get sitpwgs (url) back so i can go back to it someday! we will see when! there are times where all three couples are on stage, or times where it's just young allie + middle allie/young noah + middle noah at the same time, and it's just really brilliant and beautiful, in my opinion. i'm really devastated that it's closing so soon, although have been expecting this just based on their abysmal numbers (same with water for elephants — been reading up on broadway's weekly grosses since i was in high school, and have a fair idea of what to expect by now). i really hope you're able to catch it on tour 🤍 i didn't particularly care for the book or the movie, but i really, really loved the musical! and i do enjoy ingrid's music — i do think the notebook's score works really well in the context of the show, not so much without it though. and yes! i thought it was still in the 40s too until i was making my most recent edit and realized it was actually in the 70s 😭. they changed it so the war that noah fights in is the vietnam war instead, and it is a lot more obvious in hindsight looking at the clothes/costumes!
please don't apologize for mentioning things! i always value what you have to say, even if i am not super well-versed in that subject yet! i've been getting back into the habit of setting monthly goals in terms of things to watch/read/listen to, and i think i'll get around to the outsiders next month. i definitely want to read it first (and maybe watch the movie first?) before listening to the cast recording. i really liked aaron's roxanne (it's always a treat, and he did the opt-up!); despite aaron's checked-out-ness he always sounds vocally great.
i really love john cardoza's voice, and i hope he has a wonderful, long lasting career. he is one of the most charismatic, talented actors i've seen in a hot minute. i wonder if oh mary will tour, and if so, i hope you get to see it! it's just delightful. i have a hard time conceptualizing what oh mary would look like without cole escola, without the current cast, just because they are so good.
i've never seen once upon a mattress and actually went in pretty blind — just vaguely knew that it was inspired by the princess and the pe — and i really liked it! that being said i am still confused about how old these characters are supposed to be. i hope they do a cast recording! i really really liked michael urie, he was so funny and charming in it!
did you see that stereophonic is getting sued? haha i literally turned to my friend after the show and was like how has this show not been sued yet. so i guess there it is. i love the music but the play itself is not my favorite. it feels SO long and that's part of it, i think — it's supposed to feel like it's dragging to encapsulate how much time they spent in the studio, etc. a lot of argument, a lot of tension. it was lower in my list because i was just miserable watching it, actually — i had a really bad migraine, the sound quality was weird (the music was very loud, the actual speaking parts weren't that loud), it was just long and i felt like i was going to pass out at any moment haha. so mostly a me thing and not a stereophonic thing! i do think if i was feeling a bit better, i probably would've loved it more!
my wrists have been aching a lot lately (yay tendinitis) so it may take me a little longer to reply to the other messages but 🤍 love you! hope you're doing well!

Ok now I'm curious to see which newsie you associate ME with
Okay so I went to look through your blog and the very first thing I saw screaming lady and cat meme and so my brain instantly said Race but then then the very first couple posts were about how nice it is when someone's open about how much they care about you and giving someone the bigger or better part of something you're sharing because you love them and so I'm gonna say you're Jojo.
I've always seen him as a bit of a jokester and always trying to make people laugh, but he's also the sweetest guy ever and one of the first people to know if someone is having a bad day. Basically, I think you're really cool!

Sprace Royal Wedding AU (Let me know if anyone has an idea for a good title!)
@gendistic42 Here is your fic for @newsiesgiftexchange! I absolutely LOVED your prompt! This was my first time writing an au, so I hope you like it. It's also important to note that this fic isn't finished yet because it is going to become my first ever series! Updates will probably be sporadic, but shall be made with love so hopefully that counts lol I'm so glad I got to be a part of this! Without further ado, here is the first part of *Inset Title Here That I Will Come Up With Later!* I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Spot was pissed. He'd always known that one day he was going to have to marry someone who was chosen for him, someone that he wouldn't have much time to get to know, and given his track record, likely someone he wouldn't even like. All the same, to find out that Denton had chosen someone without even talking to him first made him angry.
Denton had been his father's advisor before he died. He'd practically raised Spot and while it was safe to say he was one of the only people Spot actually loved, they two didn't always get along very well. Denton wanted to make sure that Spot would be ready to rule when the time came. Seeing as how his father had died years ago, he would be crowned king as soon as he turned 18, leaving him with far less time to prepare than most had. Spot had watched Denton rule as the Lord Protector, learning all he could from him, until he effectively took over at 16. It was a hard life and while Spot often wished it had been passed to someone else, he wanted the best for his people and wasn't willing to risk turning over his kingdom to someone who didn't care about it as much as he did.
Spot's inevitable marriage was one of the most common debates between the him and Denton. It always started the same way. Denton would ask if Spot had thought any more about one suitor or another, Spot would get defensive over all the other things he had been working on lately till Denton pointed out that Spot was using that as an excuse to avoid thinking about it. Spot would get angry, Denton would yell back and they'd fight till Spot inevitably stormed from the room to lock himself away in his office for hours on end. They always made up quickly, they couldn't afford not to, and they both understood the other's position. The last argument had ended with Spot telling Denton to just find someone for him so that he didn't have to think about it anymore.
Sitting in his office, Spot now regretted telling Denton to decide without him. Spot realized that while he trusted Denton to try not to doom him to a miserable life, he had given up what little choice he'd had in finding someone to marry. Knowing Denton, it was likely someone serious, stoic, and far to boring for Spot's taste. Someone who could help him run his kingdom well, but probably not someone he would want to spend his life with.
Most of the reason why Spot loathed the idea of an arranged or political marriage, though he would never be caught dead admitting it, was that he wanted to have a chance to actually fall in love with someone. He wanted the chance to admire them from across the hall, for his friend's to tease him whenever his crush walked in the room. He wanted to ask them on a date and go to the movies or watch the stars together talking about everything and nothing. He wanted to hold their hand and watch their face light up when they talked about their passions. He wanted to make pancakes on a Sunday morning while his partner cooed over their kid in the living room. He wanted so many things that he'd never get the chance for.
Spot jumped as his phone vibrated next to him. Looking down he saw the name lighting up the screen. Of course Davey would be calling him. Spot had known Davey Jacobs for as long as he could remember. The Jacobs family had always been granted nobility back when Spot's grandmother had been queen for their ongoing efforts to align the monarchy with the needs and feelings of the people. Ever since the family had been both politicly active and well loved by most of the nation. Because of their close relations with the royal family, Davey, Sarah, and Spot had practically grown up with each other. Spot wasn't always sure if Les knew that he was technically his future king, but Spot didn't care for Les to ever see him as anything other than his older brother's stressed out friend.
He huffed and ran a hand down his face before declining the call and going back to the document he had been trying to distract himself with earlier. Not five seconds later his phone lit up again. Groaning he declined the call again, unlocking his phone and typing out a text before the young politician could call him another time. Just as he was about to send it, that damned picture of a smiling, gap toothed 8 year old Davey took over his screen again.
"Davey what the fuck do you want?"
"Wow, Denton said it was bad but I didn't expect that," Davey's languid and amused voice gave away that Spot's reaction was exactly what he had expected.
Spot gritted his teeth a took a deep breath before he responded.
"Jacobs, I swear, you'd better have something real important to say."
"Dude you just got engaged and you don't even know who it is. You literally told your dad to choose someone for you."
Only a handful of people knew that Spot would often refer to Denton as his dad. Given that his actually father had been the king and was now dead, it would have been considered disrespectful of him to refer to anyone else as his father, even though the former king had never had much of a hand in raising Spot in the first place.
"Yes, which is why you had better say something interesting in the next five seconds or I'm hanging up, I've got work I was doing before you called!"
"Uh huh, because you were definitely focused on that and not on your future husband," Spot could hear Davey rolling his eyes through the phone.
After a moment of silence, Davey huffed slightly before speaking again.
"Look Spot, how about I come over tonight. I don't want you stewing around your office and don't say you're working, we both know you aren't gonna get anything done like this. Let's just watch a movie, maybe sleep out on the balcony and talk. You need some time to process this."
Spot sighed before answering. "Ya know what Dave, you pick out the movie and I'll cover snacks."
"I'll be there in 20 minutes."
Spot laughed, "You'd better, Jacobs."

Hi! I hope you had a good week this week! How was your 4th of July? I hope it was good. I got to see a few fireworks from my window haha. Also yes it's been very hot here..ugh. I think I still prefer that over cold weather but it never gets really cold here either and I can't really handle the cold. I have to put fans on and drink cold drinks all the time now..but mostly it's fine haha. How has it been for you? I hope you're staying cool as well!
Haha wow..cuz Aaron is coming back? I totally thought of you when I found that out. But I guess how common is it for actors to come back to a show? He must love it a lot and his El Tango Roxanne is amazing! I know he won a Tony for it haha and I don't really remember people making a big deal like with Jonathan Groff. I did see it and enjoy it on tour but it would be fun to see him in the role! It's also just a fun show to see and I do love shows like that so I'm glad you enjoyed Pretty Woman as well. Wasn't the tour cast with Adam Pascal from Rent? I remember debating seeing it cuz of him lol. I do know what you mean..and I'm a little jealous you have some shows lined up. I'm not sure if I will see Wicked yet..but also Mrs Doubtfire is touring here with Rob McClure from the original role on Broadway and I guess I'm a fan of his but idk if I will see it but it would be cool to stage door. I did see a bootleg of the musical though which is fine and I do like some of the songs so idk yet but I liked him in Something Rotten. The only other upcoming one I would wanna watch is I think Hamilton and idk when that is maybe December and I apparently already missed Company lol.
Aww how sweet that he did that for your friend! Oh I've heard of Jasper in Dead land but didn't know too much about it. It always seemed like a cool show. The only story I have is that I went to one of Jeremy's concerts and me and my sister actually saw him walk out. It wasn't like a stagedoor so he wasn't meeting people but my sister shouted that he was so good or we love you or something like that and he looked back and said thanks I think. About 5 to 10 minutes later..people started chasing him since he was just walking on foot somewhere lol. But it was so crazy and it was like my peak Newsies and SMASH Jeremy obsession in like 2018. That's the only cool thing I have but I hope Aaron stagedoors for you!
I agree about the West End stuff..I think it's similar with Back to the Future? You'll have to let me know how it is when you see it on tour. But with Cabaret, one of the things is that Sally isn't supposed to or has to be a good singer so I'm not sure if that has to do with it. It could just be that people aren't that familiar with the show. Omg wow thanks for the video. I can't even guess how his voice would sound. I will definitely watch the video later and tell you what I think. Well they did it with that movie Boyhood by the same director so it could just be something the director does and things were fine in that movie but it also didn't really add to the movie..idk. like that's the only thing people remember about that movie now. I will send more in a part 2 cuz I worry about leaving it up and not sending or it accidentally getting deleted cuz it's getting long.
hi hi friend!! it was pretty hot last week but it has cooled down slightly here (thank goodness). i am also a summer person but am not the biggest fan of the heat — but gladly welcome summer (and the heat, and wildfire smoke and asthma, etc) over winters here.
haha aaron is part of why i'm going, but i also just really want to see stereophonic & the notebook and more importantly, some friends that i haven't seen in ages! three of my closest friends are on the east coast (one in new york, one in boston, and one in philly) so it'll be a little reunion. it's not super common but i also wouldn't say it's uncommon — thinking of drew gehling and his many, many returns to the brooks atkinson for waitress back in the day. since we last talked, i've solidified my plans a bit more — seeing moulin rouge on thursday, the notebook on friday, once upon a mattress for the saturday matinee, moulin rouge for the saturday evening show, and then on sunday i'll be seeing stereophonic for the matinee and hadestown for the evening. i must be a little crazy for doing a three hour play, then a quick dinner break, then another musical, but at least i roped one of my best friends into doing that whole sequence with me!
and yes! tour cast with adam pascal! you should definitely see wicked if you get the chance; it'll be fun — especially with the movie coming out soon! i'm seeing it in november with my mom, and am briefly entertaining the idea of doing an LA trip in january (might see it in LA then too — not the reason i'd be going down to LA, just is the only show that would be there the days i'm thinking of going to LA). i saw the pre-broadway tryout of mrs. doubtfire when it was here in seattle, and i didn't particularly love it, but i'm curious to see what your thoughts are if you decide to see it! i'm so bummed on your behalf that you missed company :( i hope you get to see something soon! do you see shows regionally too? have you ever seen a show at the sacramento music circus? if you're near there at all? i've heard they do really good productions!! one of my friends lives down there and just saw spongebob there! i really want to see something there someday (and my aunt doesn't live too far from SMC) but the idea of going to california in the summer is not the most appealing thought!
jasper is a fun show! not a good show! but i loved it dearly! — which is really how i would describe a lot of my favorite shows that never make it to broadway, or even the ones that did make it to broadway. and that's so cool that you saw jeremy! speaking of smash, did you see the peacock tweet about smash? i'm so intrigued what that's about. and sooooo excited (and anxious and nervous) about the musical. ahhhhh. i love smash. i always tell myself i should do a smash rewatch. and then i don't. i was talking to jamie last night about smash, actually, so maybe i will do a smash rewatch soon. i haven't really been reading this month; i've only read one book — and i haven't been listening to music or watching tv really (still haven't watched season 3 of the bear, although i did watch my lady jane) so i have no idea where my time has gone. i just feel like i have been very busy? oh well!
