I fully believe that at least some of Spahr's and Phineas's emotional issues could've been solved if they were allowed to be not nice. Spahr should've been allowed to develop the temperament of a grumpy and cynical ER nurse and Phineas the temperament of a moody and ill-tempered office intern.
