Jaws, Suspuria, the vvitch, and alien, for the ask thing!
jaws: what’s something u wish u were good at?
Managing my time and drawing, among other things
suspiria: what’s ur favorite book?
Going to cheat a bit here, as my favorite anything tends to shift pretty frequently, and I have a lot.
First, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books as a whole and two books in particular: Monstrous Regiment, one of the first things that first got me thinking critically (or at all, really) about my gender and helped set me on the path to where I am now, and Going Postal, which is the one that first hooked me into the series.
I really love Seanan McGuire’s October Daye series, which has both an excellent slowburn romance and healing through found family. It’s an urban fantasy about a changeling knight/private eye. They’re weird and fun and Toby has a really hard time keeping her blood in her body.
I also really like T.A. Pratt’s Marla Mason books, which is another urban fantasy, this time about the head sorcerer of Fell Port (Fellport? I listened to the audiobooks, so I’m not sure on the correct spelling) and her psychic parasite best friend as they protect and cause problems for their city and the US in general. These are really weird and hop around the US dealing with supernatural problems. Expect weird egotistical sorcerers, frogs, and existential threats to the universe.
For nonfiction, I really like Consider the Fork by Bee Wilson and Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh. Consider the Fork is about the history of cookware and implements, from the wooden spoon to the sous vide, and I find it quite interesting.Hyperbole and a Half is a collection of comics/essays on stuff from Allie Brosh’s life. It’s funny and poignant and some of the stuff on mental health is just a bit too relatable.
the vvitch: what’s ur favorite historical time period? (without the old-timey bigotry)
Pirates, cowboys, and the Victorian Era (I realize there’s pretty broad overlap between those second two, time-wise, but they’ve got a very different feel in my head, especially in fiction)
alien: what character do u relate to a lot?
October Daye, unfortunately
