Well. I've come up with an idea.
That's good.
The idea involves resurrecting a radio show that's been off air since before I was in high school. And I will have to successfully pitch the idea to the original creator.
That's challenging.
The pitch meeting will be with my dad.
That's good.
He's stubborn.
That's bad.

following disclaimers: ♤ I tend to save rbs to drafts so I can come back and tag/comment then post, so I'll rb stuff in bunches generally and might be lateish ♤ sorting between r/p/queerplatonic/etc is blurry, so I'll generally just use one name for a pair/group and stick with it. this means you might see a platonic duo tagged with a ship name, or vice versa ♤ this also means I don't generally tag trafficshipping/lsshipping/etc ♤ I don't have any cw/tws I tag regularly, but if you'd like me to tag smth feel free to ask! ♤ askbox is always open, including for drawing/ficlet reqs!

[lots uses 🐾♥️]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tags with the format "-🐾♥️" are who wrote the post/tags. the tag without a dash is to add to that person's "collection"
other tags: > #cards chatter- us talking > #cards words- our writing > #cards scribbles- our drawings > #cards mailbox- asks > #epic art/writing/etc- stuff we’ve rb'd that is epic but not ours
old version of the above tags used "captain's" instead of "cards"

Saw this post on Cohost (author is @prophetgoddess) this morning and it got me thinking about being an indie creator and appealing to an audience. I don't necessarily agree with all the points it makes, but I do think there's some stuff in here I could take to heart.
don't just think about other creative works or aspects of those works that you like and want to imitate. try a little "design by frustration." think of things that make you frustrated with or disappointed in the works you love (or the works you hate), and you will often find great starting points for new creative work.
I feel a lot of the stuff I make (especially wrt novels) is about forming a counter-narrative or examining problems with stuff I love. Finley is all about my love-hate relationship with Indiana, Working Title Ravenous is in many ways about the ways I fell out of love with Catholicism. Finding points of friction in the media I like is a really useful starting point for developing a project. However, not so useful for making videos about indie ttrpgs, because with the exception of Ironsworn, I try not to criticize smaller creators as much as possible.
don't mention your influences when you're trying to pitch your stuff to people. it makes people go into the experience already trying to compare it to a thing they're familiar with, which puts you on the back foot. don't hide your influences if people ask about them or identify them, but just don't start there. start with what makes your work unique.
I think it's fine to reference influences, but the final line really hits. We're all working from unique perspectives, forefronting our personal experience and ideas helps highlight what is unique about a work instead of derivative/borrowed. Something I struggle with a lot in my videos is feeling like I reference other people's ideas and work too often. Which is not a bad thing! It's nice to show your sources! However, what I ought to do is get more comfortable putting my own perspective upfront.
make gifts for people. they can be people you know or people you don't know. there's joy in art made only for oneself but there's also loads of joy in putting aside what you want for a moment and thinking about what would make the people you care about happy. there's nothing shameful or inherently crass and commercial about making things with other people in mind.
This last one is the most important to me. I only really want a relatively small audience of people who I like and who like me. And while that means being up front about the things I like interesting, there's something really cool about the idea of making things to cater to a group of people you care for. I hope my videos function as gifts to the indie ttrpg community (at least the people I talk to and respect).
It seems like folks really responded to the long read of Spire, and as I think about what that means for my channel going forward, I'll have to consider what "making gifts for people" means in the context of indie rpgs and how I talk about them.
