MARIANNE FAITHFULL (1946-Died January 30th 2025,at 78). English singer and actress. She achieved popularity in the 1960s with the release of her UK top 5 single "As Tears Go By", and became one of the leading female artists of the British Invasion in the United States.
Born in Hampstead, London, Faithfull began her career in 1964 after attending a party for the Rolling Stones, where she was discovered by Andrew Loog Oldham. Her 1965 debut studio album Marianne Faithfull, released simultaneously with her studio album Come My Way, was a huge success and was followed by further albums on Decca Records. From 1966 to 1970 she had a highly publicised romantic relationship with Mick Jagger. Her popularity was enhanced by film roles such as those in I'll Never Forget What's'isname (1967), The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968) and Hamlet (1969). Her popularity was overshadowed by personal problems in the 1970s, when she became anorexic, homeless and addicted to heroin.
Faithfull was noted for her distinctive melodic, high-register vocals during her 1960s musical career. Her voice was altered by severe laryngitis and persistent drug abuse during the 1970s, which left her sounding permanently raspy, cracked and lower in pitch. The new sound was praised as "whisky soaked" by some critics and was seen as having helped to capture the raw emotions expressed in her music.
After a long absence, Faithfull made a musical comeback in 1979 with the release of a critically acclaimed seventh studio album, Broken English. The album was a commercial success and marked a resurgence of her musical career. Broken English earned Faithfull a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and is regarded as her "definitive recording". She followed this with a series of studio albums including Dangerous Acquaintances (1981), A Child's Adventure (1983) and Strange Weather (1987). Faithfull wrote three books about her life: Faithfull: An Autobiography (1994), Memories, Dreams & Reflections (2007) and Marianne Faithfull: A Life on Record (2014).
Faithfull received the World Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2009 Women's World Awards, and in 2011 she was made a Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the government of France.Marianne Faithfull - Wikipedia

However, her popularity was overshadowed by personal problems in the 1970s. During that time she was anorexic, homeless, and a heroin addict.
Noted for her distinctive voice, Faithfull's previously melodic and higher-registered vocals (which were prevalent throughout her career in the 1960s) were affected by severe laryngitis, coupled with persistent drug abuse during the 1970s, permanently altering her voice, leaving it raspy, cracked and lower in pitch. This new sound was praised as "whisky soaked" by some critics and seen as having helped to capture the raw emotions expressed in Faithfull's music.[1]
After a long commercial absence, Faithfull made a comeback with the 1979 release of her critically acclaimed album Broken English. The album was a commercial success and marked a resurgence of her musical career. Broken English earned Faithfull a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and is often regarded as her "definitive recording". Faithfull is listed on VH1's "100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll" list. She received the World Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2009 Women's World Awards and was made a Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the government of France.

hey there! thanks for posting marianne from her later years too. i wish people would acknowledge that she had a life after the 60s. also i wanted to ask, when did you become a fan of hers? :)
Hi anon!
No problem! Happy to share Mari in any era! And I totally get you when people only focus on her 60s era or think she was at her prettiest there. I love her 60s era as much as the next person but I love her in every era and she's beautiful in any era, heck to me, she got more beautiful each day. And yes, I even love her music in any era. I know her later music and voice isn't everyone's cup of tea. There was a time I was like this, it's similar to how at first I didn't like the Beatles with their facial hairs and longer hair and didn't listen much to their late 60s music when I first got into them but as I matured, I grew to love their later look and music! If I stayed that way, I wouldn't be all simpy for McBeardy :p. The same was with Mari's voice. I love her sweet, high soprano voice but I do also love her gravely and raspy voice as it's the perfect voice for the music she would later make. It feels very raw and punk. It also shows how versatile she was. I want people to give her later music a chance. It's so good, trust me! Same with her movies, she did other ones besides Girl on a Motorcycle and I'll Never Forget What's'isname (I only watch her scenes and not the entire movie :P).
And to answer when I became a fan of hers. It's funny because I never got asked that until now but here it is: I first knew of her through a Rolling Stones book I have, "Rolling with the Stones" which I got as a Christmas gift from my uncle in 2002. My first thought seeing her pics in the book was "wow she's so pretty!" and I read she was a singer and actress but didn't get into her stuff until later on. So in a way, the Stones were my introduction to her but overtime, I grew to love Marianne on her own, I'd say I truly got into her in 2005. I remember hearing "Come and Stay With Me", well a snippet of this clip in particular on some 60s site and just fell for her.
youtube
And not for long, I started listening to her music, mostly starting with her 60s stuff. I was still more into her 60s stuff but overtime, I started slowly listening to her 70s stuff and then her much later stuff and slowly getting used to her later voice and now loving it! I accepted that it was still the Mari I loved and she was evolving. And the more I was getting to know more about her as a person, her life, her career, etc., I found her to be a truly fascinating person. So yep, I loved Mari for that long. And also, looking back, my thinking she was "pretty" or "loving her voice" was just my...heheh crush forming (this was before I accepted I was bi).
So, there you go nonnie.
#anonymous#sorry my answer is all over the place#i'll get around to doing a proper explanation but here's a start!
