“Perhaps it is a good thing that you can never be.”
“And why is that?”
“So that happiness can never mar your present face. Can never wrinkle or disturb the delicate features of your lips.”
You turn away from the man and watch as a seagull crosses the skyline. “If my beauty is meant to fade, then let it fade. But let it fade in the arms of a man who loves me; in the arms of a man who will not wince when he sees the lines his love has created— who will rejoice in the age and in the all the times his love has touched me.”
“You say that now, but who could be such a man?”
Off at the water’s edge, you watch kurama as he stares at the crashing and cresting waves as they meet and run from the shore. His hair is as white as the sea spray that shoots from the top of the salty water, blowing behind him as gently as the shore melts into the sea.
“I don’t know.”
“It’s better not to,” yomi is quick to intercede, “cast your naive fantasies away and be done with them. All you have is the present, and you cannot promise your future away to uncertainties.”
Kurama looks back and fixes his gaze upon you and yomi. Neither of you wave or make a gesture at inviting him into your conversation. You merely look from a distance, and in the distant gaze of kurama’s golden stare, you catch a quick glimmer of light bouncing off the sea. The light shines and sparkles, and in a flash of a moment it looks as if kurama’s golden eyes haven taken on an emerald hue. The sun setting behind him burning and bright, the halo of it casting a red shine to his hair. His expression almost soft somehow.
And you wonder— as the powerful demon slowly begins making his way up the darkening beach to return to your castle, the effects of the setting sun lost on him as his body returns to motion— just what that uncertain future might bring.
