ESC2021 Preshow: 20. Estonia
Uku Suviste - “The lucky one”
Semi 2, #02
youtube
Going through the motions of 2021′s shitty NF season, it was a given that the critical mass of the “2020 returnees” competing the selections in these would win them hands down.
So given how much i DISLIKED the offensively boring abomination “What love is”, and how PAINFULLY inevitable Uku’s victory in a decent Eesti Laul (um spoiler for NF corner?) seemed to be, It’s actually a shock I ended up liking Uku? But I do, lol and I’m not apologizing, sorry boos.
In fact, I was rooting for Uku to win EL as soon as I saw his performance in the semi. “The lucky one”, which suffered from Aggressive Autotune + Forgettable Melody (we need a name for this. I propose Roxen Syndrome?), is legit good live and harps back to the (admittedly better) “Pretty Little Liar”, and that’s good enough for me.
Of course, I am aware of the obvious ~*SOULLESS HIMBOT FROM THE DREAM FACTORY*~ label attached to this this entry (written by Uku and something called “Sharon Vaughn” are we certain this person isn’t just Kontopoulos in drag?), don’t worry. I rank him twentieth, not seventh.
Fortunately, Uku is a mandroid from the SAME sweatshop that gave us Lucie Jones a few years back - in other words omfg he’s barely functional. 😍 Droning robot turned incompetent DRAMA KING <333333 The amount of EFFORT that needs to be thrown in to keep a ~pretence of competence~ is the most tangible in the backing vocals, which trail Uku’s like a shadow and STILL his voicecracks come through at key intervals <3
😍😍😍😍😍
The pathos of Uku throwing in high votes he cannot sing and then his voice breaking over the strain each time, gets me, okay? He doesn’t need a crystal ball to show me, baby it’s clear that you don’t know him :SOB:. So dramatic, so inept, so unintetionally comedic, so Uku <3
In other news, this lockdown had better end soon because with each passing day I feel like I’m turning further into a cat lady.
ps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYXNeYXUmEQ&loop=0 😍😍😍
NF Corner - Eesti Laul 2021
Finally a decent Eesti Laul, lol. I wish I could say it was good, but it had one of the weirdest semi split’s I’ve ever seen. EL’s first Semi was without exaggeration the WORST show in the entire season, and the second was a contender for the BEST one across all NFs???? I suppose EXTREME Evil and EXTREME Good balance each other out in blistering adequacy?
Anyway, I’ll now proceed to ignore Koit and Egert and Karl Killing and Hans and all the other bad (non-Linna/non-Kéa) entries from semi 1, and proceed to an NF Corner composed ENTIRELY of semi 2 songs :-)
Jüri Pootsmann - “Magus Melanhoolia”
youtube
It was between Sissi and Jüri for the Token Superfinalist Contender slot on this list, and Jüri is infinitely more notable. Sorry, Sis ur time (to win Eesti Laul?) will come once you figure out to write good music :(
Anyway, what can I even say about Jüri because lmfao what a baffling entry. Registered BARITONE JÜRI POOTSMANN coming back with a an experimental lounge jazz song that is song almost entirely in falsetto. 😍 The camera angles <3 the fact that this already INCREDEBLY short song includes 10 seconds of Jüri standing on the stage looking bored <3 what a fucking baffling entry, I have no opinions, only exclamations of surprise.
REDEL - “Tarttu”
youtube
I HAAAATED “Tarttu” on first listen. 😂😂😂😂 but seriously though, this is downright epic. The UNPLUGGED Meiekündimees MADNESS of it all, now condenced into a equally nonsensical song that is basically like “X is a wooden town but NONE OF THEM ARE AS WOODEN TOWNY AS TARTTU. *incoherent kazoo noises*” 😍😍😍 Once got the chorus stuck in my head at the zoo as I was watching the penguins getting fed and it was one of the most bizarre synesthesic experiences I’ve ever had lmfao <3
Gram-of-Fun - “Lost in a dance”
youtube
If you’re wondering what the sort of music I listen to Eurovision is like - this is it. INCREDIBLY good and addictive and EMOTIONALLY tangible 80s New Wave is my fucking jam, can we have entries like this in EVERY selection from here on out? WELL DONE Kristel... on composing this wonderful song, less so on the Kazka-esque vocals that caused it to tragically NQ in the semi. 🙄 Still, BRING THEM BACK (and restrict Kristel to a songwriter only role, plz.)
Gram-of-Fun were my fave, but because they NQ’d somebody else had to fill their shoes in the finale. I’ll now reveal who it was
Kadri Voorand - “Energy”
youtube
IT WAS HARD DECIDING BETWEEN SUURED TÜDRÜKUD AND KADRI THOUGH. But given that Charlotte Perelli is guaranteed to appear in Sweden’s NF corner (um is she? :counts on fingers: Clara, Evas, Dotter... ehh sure I’m committed now I guess), it would be best NOT to post Dagmar & Kaire as they fucking clown her lol <3 But their song WAS pretty antiquated schlager...
Kadri otoh... absolutely breaks all records for me by delivering a unicorn: an entertaining stripped-down piano ballad. For the most part because she has incredible emotional delivery that serves personality on a fucking pyrotechnical level, like onn-stop “Loudmouthed Oaf Energy” in the form of a introspective jazz ballad <3 Can you imagine Estonia actually picking this? They could have come left-handside.
But will Uku do well? :o
Predicted Journey - Estonia
He won’t come top 10, if that’s what you mean by “well”.😂 If you mean “qualify for the Grand Final” then... potentially? Semi 2 is less of a crapshoot than the first semifinal however. At this stage, it’s pretty much “okay, so these twelve acts can qualify... but which ten will?”.
Fortunately for Uku, he is one of aforementionned twelve possible qualifiers. (the others are: san marino, czech rep, greece, moldova, iceland, serbia, albania, bulgaria, finland, switzerland and denmark). UNfortunately for Uku, he’s one of the candidates for the two NQ slots inside that group of twelve.
The problem with Estonia is that their entry is a televote-friendly ballad, stuck in a really televote-UNfriendly slot (#02), in a semi where the jury vote will very likely put them outside the top 10. If we add in a dark stage and Uku’s shaky vocals, they don’t look particularly secure.
However, I also think Estonia can qualify relatively easily because “televote-friendly ballad” is a unique niche inside that semi; the other ballads (Switzerland is NOT a ballad), won’t be getting many votes and Uku’s appeal as a handsome man with a dramatic song will make him stand out in spite of his spot in the running order, as LONG AS his vocal delivery (or that of the prerecorded backing vocals) remains adequate enough. If not, he’ll be swiftly forgotten and NQ.
Another thing that can cause Uku to qualify is if at least two others of the twelve underwhelm (my money for that would be on Albania, Denmark, San Marino and/or Czech Rep), making Uku the lucky one as he’ll ascend in the ensuing powercreep.
At any rate, it’s really difficult to gauge how well Uku would do since I haven’t really thought about the other BL qualifiers’ odds enough. His televote should be strong enough to avoid bottom 3, I think, and I think it’s safe to say he won’t come top five. Between those values, pffffew, who can possibly tell? I’m not burning my fingers on that.
Projected placements > Qualifier Tier: Borderline > Semifinal: 6th-14th (out of 17) > Grand Final: 17th-22nd (out of 26)
THE RANKING

so no one will care most likely but here’s my top 26 for this year’s Eurovision final! Starting from the bottom:
26. San Marino: I’m still wondering how the hell did this guy qualify. Seriously?
25. United Kingdom: not terrible, but boooooring.
24. Germany: they’ve sent worse entries, but still... no.
23. Denmark: cute song, but I still feel that there should have been Romania in her place in the final. Sorry!
22. Belarus: I love Zena’s voice and I think she gave new life to the song while performing in the semi, but it’s still not enough to make it one of my faves.
21. Israel: I haven’t heard this live yet and I’m sure that he’ll sound great. Maybe if paired with a nice staging it might impress me more, but for now, it captured me much less than other songs.
20. Slovenia: I actually really liked the staging and I don’t really have anything negative to say about them, but it’s not a song that I would put on repeat.
19. North Macedonia: she has a great voice and the staging really made the song shine, I’m happy that she’s in the final!
18. Serbia: my opinion on this song is quite similar to North Macedonia’s one xD
17. Estonia: I think the song is catchy, I often find myself singing it while doing stuff xD
16. Sweden: his voice is good, his song is good, I still don’t understand why he’s top 3 in the odds. I don’t know how to explain it, maybe I feel like it’s not Eurovision-y enough, but I think the middle of the ranking is the place for this song.
15. Cyprus: I always dance and sing while listening to the song and I really like it, but maybe it’s too similar to Fuego and doesn’t exactly have the same charme.
14. Switzerland: same as above xD
13. France: nice song, nice message, I hope Bilal does well!
12. Greece: she has a great voice and a great staging, I loved the swords and the flowers!
11. Albania: Jonida’s voice is just so amazing, wow. And I really like it when artists sing in their own language. Plus she seems like a genuinely nice person, from what I’ve seen in interviews.
10. The Netherlands: the only reason why this song is so low is probably because in this period I seem to like more catchy songs to listen during my average day. There’s no other way I can explain it honestly xD this song is very emotional, every time I listen to it it almost brings me to tears. It’s my number 10, but I feel that if he won it’d be totally deserved.
9. Spain: this song brings out the fiesta inside of me. It just puts me in a good mood, and when I’m listening to it while I’m alone I can’t help to sing and dance xD
8. Australia: I didn’t pay too much attention to this before the first semi, but seeing the staging and hearing the vocals totally captured me. I almost cried when I saw the performance xD anyway, the other countries should take notes because THIS is the Eurovision we want!
7. Iceland: it took a couple of listens for me to fall in love with this, at first I thought it was too weird xD who would have thought, apparently I like this kind of music too! xD but yeah, I love their vocals and their staging. I hope the juries think the same too!
6. Czech Republic: I was a bit surprised in seeing that people put them really low in their rankings, because for me this was love at first listen xD it’s just so catchy and I love the performance, I know that they probably will never be so high in the ranking but I still have hope!
5. Italy: I still haven’t seen the complete performance of course, but I think that this year my country has a strong song! It has meaning and it has a nice rhythm. I hope it doesn’t get robbed as always...
4. Norway: this is a bit of a mix of everything: it’s catchy, it has nice vocals and a bit of tradition. It’s what I think of when I think of an Eurovision song. And it’s amazing to sing while in the shower xD
3. Malta: I thought that the song was great, but I had my doubts about the performance... then I saw it in the semi, and WOW. Absolutely loved it. Wow.
1-2 (yeah, can’t decide on my absolute fave). Russia: come on, it’s Sergey Lazarev. His vocals and stage presence are flawless, and the song is just my kind of song, powerful with a touch of darkness. Also, I can relate personally to it since it describes pretty accurately my feelings regarding crying in public xD
1-2. Azerbaijan: dear Chingiz, I’d like to have my heart back, please. Maybe after you repair it with one of those robots that you have on stage. Thank you! I’d like people not to hate me after talking to me for more than half an hour because I can’t just “like” stuff like normal people but I have to obsess over it and spread the word. No but seriously, this guy captured my heart from the first moment in which I listened to his song, thought that surely he wasn’t able to do that falsetto live, and discovered that omg he totally can. The staging is a combination of some of my favourite stuff to see on a stage, he’s absolutely gorgeous and, most importantly, his vocals are on point!

ESC 2019 - A Review by me
I'm a bit late to the party but I was too tired to complete this post on 1am. Andd, disclaimer, I know nothing about music and those are just my personal opinions, lol.
Everytime I saw the Pride flag in the audience, I smiled.
I liked the idea how they are getting introduced, with those dances 'n stuff they did in different beautiful places in Israel.
That was a funny and spectacular beginning and entrance. The plane looks cool and my sister complained, as always, that it takes too long until everyone is in there. xD 9/10
Woah, Malta, I like that song, it sounds really nice!! I would've voted for it if Norway's song didn't exist. Song: "Chameleon by Michaela" Place: 16 of 26
I liked Albanias song, even though I don't understand the Albanian language and it's not exactly what I would listen to. But the song has for sure a powerful message. Song: "Ktheju tökes by Jonida Maliqi" Place: 18 of 26
Czechias song was okay, modern and again a nice song but I wouldn't vote for it. Song: "Friend of a Friend by Lake Malawi" Place: 11 of 26 Edit: This has grown on me
Our song (Germany's), "Sister by S!sters" was okay, they have decent voices but I didn't have much hope for them and the song wasn't the best of the evening. Place: 24 of 26
The russian contestant, Sergey Lazarev, has a decent voice and song, not the best but still kinda good. I didn't understand every word and it seemed a bit, I don't know, musical-like😅. The background in the beginning reminded me of when they get fast with their ships in Star Wars. But the background after that with the rain and thunderstorm looked amazing. Song: "Scream" Place: 3 of 26 Edit: I love that song now, omfg!
Soo, Denmark... I don't know, kind of good? Was okay, a bit like a kids song. Had three languages and a wonderful message in it. I would put it in the middle or end of the field. Song: "Love is Forever by Leonora" Place: 12 of 26
San Marino, huh, didn't really convince me but was fine, I guess. Song: "Say Na Na by Serhat" Place: 20 of 26
North Macedonias wasn't bad. The song had an important message and sounded nice. I would've voted for but I voted for Norway. Song: "Proud by Tamara Todevska" Place: 8 of 26
Yooo, I loved Sweden's song, the text, the melody and voice. Not thaaat original but still good. I would actually listen to that on a daily basis and I would've maybe voted for it if I could vote for more than one song xD. Song: "Too Late For Love by John Lundvik" Place: 6 of 26
Slovenias song was in their language and sounded good. Gorgeous stage show with the galaxies and stars in the background. Wouldn't vote for it tho. Song: "Sebi by Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl" Place: 13 of 26
Cyprus' song was okay, had a nice beat and a good performance. It seemed party-ish. With the time she had a bit less costume than in the beginning, lol. Song: "Replay by Tamta" Place: 15 of 26
Netherlands song was a lot calmer than the other songs but still beautiful. I would totally listen to that at some time in the future. Song: "Arcade by Duncan Laurence" Place: 1 The Winner!!! Edit: I'm soft and listen to this song very often now
Greece's song was nice. She has a unique voice and the performance was beautiful too. Song: "Better Love by Katerine Duska" Place: 21 of 26
Israel's song was beautiful and a lot of cheering happened, because well.. This year the ESC's in Israel. I think it was okay. He has a pretty voice. It touched me. And then he started to cry a little and then I got emotional too. Song: "Home by Kobi Marimi" Place: 23 of 26
I liked the song of Norway's contestants a lot, they had beautiful voices, the text was good and I'd listen to it again. I voted for it because it was what I would expect as a typical ESC song. Song: "Spirit In The Sky by KEiiNo" Place: 5 of 26 Edit: MY FAVOURITE AHHH
UK's song was very good and I liked the song, his message and it made me veeery emotional and damnn, I will definetely listen to it. I liked the galaxy effects in the background. Song: "Bigger Than Us by Michael Rice" Place: 26 of 26 It didn't deserve the last place. Edit: I didn't listen to it again xDD
Iceland's song was... different and really not what I would listen to. But to each his own, I guess. And after all, there is no accounting for taste. I like the lyrics, I would've maybe voted for it, if I had known the lyrics but I didn't have had wifi on Saturday. 😅. Song: "Hatrið mun sigra by Hatari" Place: 10 of 26
Belarus' song and performance were pretty good and her voice is hella fine. Not entirely my style of music but still kind of nice, I guess. Song: "Like It by Zena" Place: 25 of 26
Azerbaijan's song was fine too. But the robotic arms confused me a little. He has a awesome voice. Song: "Truth by Chingiz" Place: 7 of 26 Edit: This has grown on me so much!
France's song was good as heck and I wanna be able to dance like the ballerina but I'd be too lazy. And damn his hair. I couldn't understand one lyric because he sang in French but I overall liked the song. Would say it'll be in the middle field, tho. Song: "Roi by Bilal Hassani" Place: 14 of 26
Italy's song was interesting. Because I know a lot less about music than I should I don't know if it is rap or not. And is that Italian? Overall, it's a good song, I think. Edit: Now one of my faves of 2019
And then I nearly fell asleep til the end of Spain's song came on. Sorry, Serbia, Switzerland, Spain and Australia. I was too tired and can't say that much about those songs. But I'll try: Serbia's song "Kruna by Nevana Božović" was okay and landed Place 17. Switzerland's song "She Got Me by Luca Hänni" was okay too and landed on place 4. Australia's performance was amazing. And I listened to Australia's song, "Zero Gravity by Kate Miller-Heidke" before on the radio and in the end it landed on place 9. Spain's performance of their song "La Venda by Miki" was colorful and I kinda liked it but it landed on place 22.
Madonna... I- She was worse than every single contestant that night. Seriously, it was horrible. I feel so sorry for her
As always it was a very exciting time until every country has sent their jury votes and audience votes.
Conclusion: I liked this ESC a lot because most songs were very good and at least four songs could've won. It was better than last year for sure. And I think a lot of songs would've deserved to win. I'm looking forward to the next Eurovision Song Contest next year. :)

WEEKEND TV HOT FILM PICKS!
Check out my guide to the top films on TV this weekend and the best of the rest. Enjoy!
LATE FRIDAY 1st DECEMBER
HOT PICKS!
More4 @ 2100 The King's Speech (2010) *****
The King’s Speech is very deserving of its critical acclaim. Tom Hooper did a fantastic job directing but the main success of this film is down to Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush’s powerhouse performances. It has a wonderful vein of humour running throughout. Subtle humour with a lot of heart. This film is inspirational and also interesting to delve into Britain’s history as well as the challenges faced by those with a crippling speech impediment. If you need one feel good factor this weekend, stick this to the top of your list.
ITV1 @ 2315 Total Recall (1990) *****
Total Recall is a superb Sci-Fi Action adventure thanks to everyone’s favourite director of the 90’s, Paul Verhoeven. This is one of my favourite Arnie films and is definitely one of Arnie’s more interesting characters. In fact it’s full of great characters, has an elaborate storyline, is extremely well told considering its complexity and open to much interpretation.
Arnie steps into the shoes of Douglas Quaid, a construction worker haunted by recurring dreams about Mars. Obsessed, he decides to visit Rekall Inc. A company that sells fake - yet realistic - implanted memories of ideal holidays. Here the story spirals into conspiracy and danger as the implant seemingly goes wrong and Quaid begins to get, what we are led to believe are, previously patched and hidden memories coming back to him. Quaid goes on a personal mission to find out his true identity and why strangers, intent on killing him, lurk around every corner.
It was great to see Arnie in a far more intelligent role compared to the usual muscle bound, brainless roles he was used to. He plays Quaid really well and fits perfectly into the part. Considering it was made in 1990, Total Recall really pushed the boundaries of special effects and CGI. It has some pretty elaborate attempts at special effects. Some are fantastic but some (namely the electronic head mask) were a little too ambitious for the technology available, however this does not detract from a film that will remain one of my favourite Sci-Fi action films. I am really disappointed with the remake. The original still holds its own even 27 years later.
Best of the rest:
Sony @ 1825 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) ****
History @ 2100 Downfall (2004) ****
Horror @ 2255 The Descent (2005) *****
SATURDAY 2nd DECEMBER
HOT PICKS!
C4 @ 2000 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) ****
Charming, delightful, funny and packed full of emotion, you’ll certainly be very glad you checked into The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The fame filled cast all produce such depth of characters in so little time. The colour, sound, visuals and direction are all so rich you could almost be there. I knew this film would be good, I’m just very surprised to find it to be great and one of my favourite feel good films of 2011.
ITV4 @ 0005 Senna (2010) *****
Senna is a phenomenal documentary about Formula One Legend Ayrton Senna. Pieced together through archive footage and intelligent narrative this film pulls on the heart strings of everyone I know who has seen it. This film is not purely for F1 fans. This is an amazing story and his rise to fame and his tragic death at the Grand Prix at San Marino aged just 34. It’s full of gems about F1, the drivers and those who ran the show but most of all tells the story of one of the greatest drivers F1 has ever seen.
Sony @ 0145 Moneyball (2011) ****
Baseball, Finance, Maths…. Sounds like a recipe for a bore fest of some magnitude. Do not be put off. This film is more about the people than the sport or the money. Full of heart, expertly directed and edited with a punchy script. Some amazing use of sound and one of Pitt’s best performances to date. It’s beyond me how a sport and statistics film can provide such riveting entertainment. I’m sure you won’t believe me - so you’ll just have to check it out for yourself.
Best of the rest:
Film4 @ 1300 The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) *****
ITV4 @ 1525 Superman (1978) *****
Film4 @ 1650 Miracle om 34th Street (1947) *****
Comedy @ 1800 Wayne's World (1992) ****
Sony @ 1900 Another Earth (2011) ****
W @ 2100 Dead Calm (1989) ****
Universal @ 2100 Cliffhanger (1993) ***
C4 @ 2225 I, Robot (2004) ****
Horror @ 0100 Chernobyl Diaries (2012) ***
SUNDAY 3rd DECEMBER
HOT PICKS!
ITV4 @ 1130 Superman (1978) *****
Kick of December with the original Superman. This film is a classic. Everyone has seen it - it’s been a staple TV weekend and Bank Holiday film for many, many years and with all the sequels and re-imaginings, TV series, spin offs and remakes this 1979 super hero movie still remains the very best of the bunch. Even though the effects are a little old they simply add to the charm of the film. Whereas today bad CGI almost always ruins a film, in 1978 they had to rely on strength of story and this certainly has just that - it’s a consuming adventure with a lot of heart and a great vein of comedy. There’s no better way to kick off your morning with the iconic Superman. This is feel good film making at its very best.
Syfy @ 2100 Twelve Monkeys (1995) *****
I present to you Terry Gilliam’s greatest achievement with this extremely detailed, rich and complex story introducing some of the most memorable characters in film. Twelve Monkeys is an extremely accomplished Time Travel Sci-Fi adventure dealing with multiple themes and concepts through some amazing storytelling. Even with its multiple time lines, flashbacks and crazy plot Gilliam feeds the story to us with amazing skill also treating us to some amazing cinematography and backdrops of a dark and bleak future world.
Gilliam is notorious for his almost stubborn attention to tiny details. Each scene is busy with cogs and mechanisms and such richness it’s sometimes hard to take it all in, but this all adds to the overall effect and feel of the film.
A huge amount of this film’s success lies in the amazing performances from all the cast. Particular praise goes to Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt who bring to the screen quite possibly their greatest performances to date.
The film is set in the future where a virus has wiped out the majority of human life and the survivors live underground where they are safe. Attempting to find a cure the head scientists send James Cole (Willis) back to the year 1996 to gather information. When he is sent to 1990 by mistake and after a fight he finds himself in a mental institution where he meets the wild eyed and crazed Jeffrey Goines (Pitt). It really is a roller coaster of events from here.
The joy of this film is that it never ages, it always seems a fresh, new and clever concept that always rewards. Definitely up in my Top 5 Time Travel films. Twelve Monkeys is a masterpiece. I have high hopes for the new TV series based on this film. I hope it becomes a good companion piece and not a scar on the memory of this original success. Watch this!
Best of the rest:
ITV4 @ 1425 The Dam Busters (1955) ****
History @ 1500 Downfall (2004) ****
Film4 @ 1515 Flight of the Navigator (1986) ****
C4 @ 1555 Arthur Christmas (2011) ***
Film4 @ 1705 The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) ****
C4 @ 1750 Shrek (2001) ****
C4 @ 2100 Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) ****
TCM @ 2100 The Graduate (1967) *****
Film4 @ 2100 Legend (2015) ***
Horror @ 2240 Exam (2009) ***
Comedy @ 0005 Pineapple Express (2008) ****
ITV4 @ 0030 Mars Attacks! (1996) ***
Horror @ 0230 The Hills Have Eyes (1977) ****
