Last night I analysed the Peaceful Property trailer because apparently I cannot be normal when it comes to a TayNew series, so here's my livetweeting of it:

Also I'm pretty sure that the scene with Pang applauding will mean that Home will make a speech to the group (or to Peach in particular) and that's pretty fun! I wonder if it's a motivational one.

Next we have several scenes of them ghost-hunting, and I wonder if they're set in different episode as a "monster-of-the-week" type of show, or if there will be some montages of them as well.

Also, at one point not only Peach will be seeing ghosts, apparently. The police officer running away and Gun seeing the ghost in the mirror are interesting to see. 👀

I thought of something, based on an answer of yours I saw yesterday. I don't know if you're into videogames, but Last of Us 2 came out recently and it has a transgender character. A trans boy. I won't bore you with plot and setting, but this character goes through immense suffering which is directly tied to his trans identity. And a bit of a ruckus happenned. Discussions about tokenim and trans representation in media.. And I, myself, am not trans. So I could understand to an extent-(1/4)

And I've experienced watching a show just because it has queer characters, I've been queerbaited, I've cringed and eyerolled at rehashed hetero romances. Y'know, things all lesbians go through. Now the Haunting anthology series are of the horror genre. I didn't watch them expecting to be punched in the feels.

And where I'm going with this is, comparing Dani and Jamie to this trans character I understood the problem of the trans audience. What Dani and Jamie went through had nothing to do with their attraction towards one another! And they were never used and paraded around in media months before the show even came out. Sometimes people use this dumb argument that goes-

I actually played TLOU2 in entirety this summer, and the Lev stuff was definitely on my radar. It’s always a concern in any piece of media, that someone who isn’t part of a particular community will include that community as a scrap or a token--or, worse, as a cautionary tale about that “kind of person”. I’m also not trans (technically, I guess; I dunno that I’m anything where gender is concerned, but that’s a conversation for another day), but the critiques of what the trans community feared going into a story that violent with a character they were going to be instinctively protective of were reasonable. And, yeah--I feel the same whenever queer characters of any kind turn up in darker genres, especially. 

Because, like, if a gay character turns up in a sitcom or a rom-com, they might be a joke. And that’s shitty. But if they turn up in a drama? A horror? A post-apoc zombie game? Then you run the risk of being a joke AND being shown tragedy and pain and told, “Hey--this is for you. This is your future. Say thank you.”

Bly, for me--a white gay person--does feel like a milestone. For how it painted queer love specifically, it does feel like it took into account love and humanity and not “well, Dani was always going to die because she’s gay.” It felt like “Dani’s going to die, because the thesis of the thing is that humans are made to die, and to tell this kind of story, this is just how it goes. But we can make sure she’s loved and happy while she’s here.” And while the creative team/actresses keep saying they just went in valuing human love and not thinking about the gay aspect as much, I find them doing that--coming at the story from a human center, instead of a label place--still allowed them to tell a story that really resonates with the queer experience. The coming out fears, the care of two women learning to trust one another, the found family aspect--that’s all very close to the heart of even modern queerness. They didn’t sacrifice the reality of the thing, they just didn’t focus so completely on the queerness that they turned the story into a plastic representation of what gay love is. It balanced. 

Still, it isn’t perfect. The other thing to consider with darker-tone stories is: is this happening to everyone? Is the violence just targeting the minority group, and everyone else is left safe and sound, or is everyone being damaged because that’s just the kind of story they’re telling? It’s a complicated conversation, and different people are going to have different answers. Bly is a sad story: Owen and Jamie are left without the respective loves of their lives, the kids are tormented by adults they trust, Dani suffers and ends up at the bottom of a lake. The genre comes for everyone, as it were, but I don’t know that we could say it does so equally. The Black community might not feel as kindly toward Bly, for example, since both Rebecca and Hannah wind up horrifically dead without getting to really enjoy happiness, as opposed to the white queer lead getting a lifetime of relative joy before meeting her end. There’s a lot to unpack, and those conversations are important. Like you said, a pretense of homogeny isn’t beneficial when it comes to forward motion through fiction. Or life. I do think starting from a place of humanity and moving outward is helpful for getting a story right, but I also think there’s more to it than just patting yourself on the back for getting one kind of story right. It’s an interesting conversation that’s important to keep having, to keep from seeing storytellers hit the point where they can say “we already did this, and now we’re done.” I would hope, seeing how Bly handled the love story, the next project the team takes on would just keep building on that foundation.

Iron curtain falls on Hong Kong cinema as censors demand cuts

HONG KONG

Once renowned for world-class cinema, Hong Kong's film industry was already struggling before the latest hurdle -- Chinese mainland-style censorship as authorities take their purge of dissent into the cultural sphere.

Filmmaker Mok Kwan-ling's heart sank when the email from the government censors dropped.

In June, authorities announced all films would now be scrutinized for "national security" breaches. Mok's was the first known to have fallen foul of these rules.

For months, she had been putting together her debut, a 27-minute drama inspired by the many young couples she encountered during huge democracy protests two years ago.

It tells the story of a young woman meeting her boyfriend's parents after he is arrested for taking part in the protests. The boyfriend's mother is opposed to the movement, his father sympathetic.

The Cantonese title "Zap Uk" (literally "clean up the house") is a reference to how friends and family would often remove any incriminating items once a loved one was arrested.

But Mok said Hong Kong's film censors were not happy with what was submitted and ordered her to make 14 cuts.

Among the changes they demanded was removing a line from the father saying their son was a first aid volunteer who was "only out there to save the people" as well as deleting a scene where the same character, a truck driver, charges protesters a discounted fare.

The censors also demanded the film be renamed and carry a warning that it showed criminal offenses.

"I thought the story was rather balanced by presenting voices of two sides," Mok told AFP. "It turned out that one particular side is not allowed to be heard."

Mok felt the cuts would leave her film "devoid of essence and sense," so she put it aside for now.

"My film happened to be the first but it won't be the last," she warned.

AFP has contacted Hong Kong's Film Censorship Authority for comment.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Hong Kong was known as "The Hollywood of the Far East", with a cast of globally recognized stars like Chow Yun-fat and auteurs such as Wong Kar-wai.

The golden age of Cantonese cinema has long been eclipsed by the rise of mainland Chinese and South Korean films.

But the city maintained a vibrant indie scene, shielded by free speech protections that allowed directors to tackle subjects that would be untouchable on the authoritarian mainland.

Those days are now over.

China is rapidly remolding Hong Kong in its own image after the democracy protests, and films are just the latest in a long list of targets.

On top of the new scrutiny rules, a law making its way through the legislature will expand censorship to films previously given clearance as well as tightening the punishment for breaches.

Kiwi Chow was one of five directors who contributed short stories for "Ten Years".

The 2015 film painted a dystopian portrait of what Hong Kong might look like in a decade with Beijing stifling freedoms and the city's Cantonese culture.

As well as being prescient, "Ten Years" was a commercial hit and won best film at the city's annual awards.

But it is unlikely that a production like that could now be made -- or even shown.

"They are trying to clamp down on our memory and imagination," Chow told AFP.

Chow's latest project "Revolution of Our Times" is a 2.5-hour-long documentary on the 2019 protests.

Organisers secretly added it to the Cannes Festival Festival lineup earlier this summer -- only once the mainland Chinese films had been shown.

But Chow said he has given up any hope of showing it in Hong Kong.

"If it is dangerous and risky for filmmakers to touch upon social issues... then I could only screen it outside Hong Kong," Chow said.

To protect himself, he said, he has sold the copyright and disposed of all locally held footage. The production team, collaborators and financial backers have chosen to remain anonymous.

Still, some investors and actors have backed out of his non-political productions and a recent screening of a romance he made was raided by police.

Fear of angering Beijing has long fueled self-censorship in Hong Kong's arts, but mainland-style blacklisting of those who speak out is now also happening.

Earlier this month, pro-democracy pop star Denise Ho was forced to cancel her concert after the venue pulled out citing "public security" concerns just days before her performance.

But Chow predicts censorship will do little to change Hong Kongers' desire for a greater say in how their city is run and smacks of weakness.

"The more is banned in the name of national security, the less secure the state will be," he said.
