i wont lie my dude, i was a HUGE st*rek shipper when i was young. like i think i started watching teen wolf when i was 14 and s2 was airing and i was probably 16 or 17 when i jumped ship mid season 4. and i used to think st*rek was the best ship w the most potential ever, and i glossed over things like their 6 year age gap and shit bc i didnt think it was a big deal. like stiles was a little bit older than me and who wouldnt LOVE a older bf??? and over the years as ive gotten older and when i turned 22 and thought about wtf there is no way in hell i'd date anyone under the age of 20 lmao. i did a teen wolf rewatch and was shocked and appalled bc there is no way st*rek would have worked or happened in the show there are just too many red flags and its icky!!! stiles is a child!!! it made me understand why so many of the fics i would read back then had either aged up stiles or aged down derek lmao. i even went back to my old ao3 and unbookmarked a shit ton of old fics. thank god for growing up :')
Completely understand this!! Some things just don’t yet click for children/teens, so for plenty of viewers the age gap wouldn’t seem like a “big deal.” Then as we grow and mature and our brain matures with us, it becomes much easier to assess things we consume and think more critically about them, and I think a lot of people in fandom do! It feels unfair to judge anyone that enjoyed that sort of thing when they were younger, because honestly, there’s no roadmap on how to consume media. It’s a relatively new thing, and it’s not like many teens are sharing with their parents what they ship or what they read on ao3, so it’s easy for young people to become misguided in a sense, because they have to figure it out themselves. As with a lot of things, our ability to analyze media grows with us, and shoutout to that!!!
But then sadly, and for some reason I CANNOT explain, there’s so many st*rek shippers that ARE full on adults and haven’t grown out of it yet and I just. Pray to god they go outside and look at a really old tree or something. Call up their parents maybe. Read more books O| ̄|_ Put things in perspective idk LMAO.
#ex-st*rek fans in recovery this one is for you. congrats on making it out B)#I think the reason I’m lucky to have been able to steer clear of most (most!) of that stuff is because I have a parent I feel comfortable#talking with about my interests#so growing up around that really helped me to understand safe ways to navigate media#and gave me an informed person to bounce ideas off of#and I really wish more people had that and hope more people can grow up with that because it really does help!#ask bug#teen wolf

Hey!
I was wondering if I could request a Rambo x reader set in the first movie, if that’s alright, where the reader sees him walking through town and knows that Sheriff Teasle will try to bully him out of town so she pulls over and lies about them being old friends and then they go to eat or something? And the reader actually treats Rambo like a human being and thanks him for his service to his country when she finds out he is a veteran. Oh and could the reader be female please? Thank you very much! If not then that’s totally fine 😊
And I also wanted to say that your writing is amazing!!! And the reason I ended up watching Rambo in the first place 😆
Hope you have a great night/day!
Nfhfhhhf thank you so much! I'm so glad you like my stuff! And I got you into Rambo? Hell yeah!😂 I liked this request a lot, so I hope I've done it justice!
Respect Me.
John Rambo (First Blood) x reader

For once, the truck sound system seems to be playing the tape flawlessly, lacking the usual stuttering and skipping it generally likes to include in the soft flow of music. Idly, I tap my fingers along with the gentle beat, the steering wheel moving easily in my grip as I guide the beaten pick-up truck out onto the main road, falling in line with the other traffic around me. The vehicle shudders a little as I change the gears, the old truck having never liked to do anything it should do, slowly moving into a more sustainable pace as I lean back in my seat, keeping my eyes trained on the road, with a half-eye kept on the sidewalk and nearby shops. A few Christmas decorations adorn the homely stores, though it's mostly left dull and bleak, as this town always has been. Once again, I find myself wishing I could just move away from here, start a new life somewhere else.
Ahead of me, the traffic slows, allowing someone to turn into the main flow, giving me the time to glance out of the window, scanning the sidewalk a little way away. Oddly, a familiar police vehicle has pulled up just past a nearby junction, the driver leaning out of the window to talk to someone on the pavement, who I have yet to be able to see. The car is Sheriff Teasle's, the knowledge of which does not sit well with me - If he's pulled someone over, it's not for a good reason.
Checking my mirrors, I indicate off towards the sheriff, leaving the main flow as I follow the curb round, finally able to see who Teasle is talking to. Just as I feared, it looks as if he's pulled up a random person for yet another unfair interrogation. Frowning, I regard the solemn-looking man with interest, trying to ignore the part of me that finds his somewhat crooked features incredibly attractive, taking note of his obvious vagrancy: his hair is long and shaggy, clearly being left uncut for months on end, his dust-strewn parka and faded jeans showing signs of constant wear. From what I can see, Teasle is questioning him, most likely about the guy's purpose in Hope, though he doesn't seem particularly open to this encounter. Making up my mind, I cross my fingers and hope my plan now works.
Pulling up beside the two, I stop the car and climb out, plastering on a convincing grin as I go towards the dark-haired man, greeting him as I go.
"John! I didn't realise you were in town! You should've said something!" I exclaim, pleading the man with my eyes that he'll play along, though it's somewhat unlikely.
He gives me a shocked look, head snapping round at the sound of the name, hard eyes fixing on me with suspicion and hostility, the severity of the expression sending a shudder down my spine. Teasle also looks to me, frowning.
"And to think you were left to walk along here in the cold! Jeez, you really should have called or something, I could've picked you up!" I carry on, praying that he picks up the cue, "Oh, hello there, Sheriff, how are you?"
"Not bad, thanks." Teasle replies tightly, glancing between the man and I, "You know this guy?"
"Oh, yeah. John is a family friend." I lie, smiling brightly at the man in question.
"Yeah, it's been a long while, but I thought it was time to visit again." The man finally chips in, his husky voice stirring up butterflies in my stomach, "Wanted to keep my visit a surprise, though."
"Ah, well! You're here now, at least I can give you a lift back to mine." I offer him, ignoring Teasle's sceptical look.
Giving me a taut smile, which looks more like a grimace, the man steps towards me, shooting the Sheriff a glance as he goes. Doing the same, I smile pleasantly at Teasle, and say my goodbyes, climbing back into my car as my new passenger joins me, sliding cautiously into the seat beside me. Quickly, I pull back out into the traffic, heading away from Teasle as swiftly as possible.
"Thank you for doing that." The dark-haired man murmurs after a moment, his hands clenching around his knees as he forces himself to look out of the windscreen.
"No problem. Teasle's an ass at the best of times, best just to stay away from him." I muse, "Do you want something to eat? There's a good place just down the road from here."
Turning to face me, the man frowns and watches my face, as if for signs of deceit, his quiet nature giving me the impression that he's probably quite acclimatised to being treated as such.
"How do you know my name?" He eventually asks, voice quiet.
Now it's my turn to frown as I glance across at him.
"I don't."
"You called me John earlier. How did you know that's my name?"
Surprised, I double take, now realising how sketchy that must look.
"Your name is John? I had no idea! That's a lucky coincidence, clears up confusion later." I chuckle dryly, "Honestly, I picked the first name that came to mind. I had no idea that it's your actual name."
He watches me for a second longer, eventually appearing happy with my response, looking away again.
"What's your name?" He asks me after a further minute.
"Me? I'm (Y/n). (Y/n) (Y/l/n)."
"John Rambo." John nods, flicking some hair from his face, "And if you're still offering, I'd like to get something to eat, please."
"Of course."
Pulling up to the diner, I park the car, climbing out as I check the cash I have on me, deeming it enough for two decent meals and some drinks, hoping that it won't be too busy at this time of the day. John follows me, leaving his bedroll in the car as we walk into the small restaurant, finding a seat at one of the window booths, sitting opposite each other. He's quiet, scanning the room as soon as he's sat down, body stiff as he unzips his parka, revealing a red woolen jumper underneath. What strikes me most, however, (apart from the obvious planes of rippling muscle) are the silver dog tags hanging around his neck, jingling every so often as he moves.
A waiter comes over to us, handing us menus with a false smile, leaving us alone together again until we've ordered drinks, at which point he returns with the beverages. Stepping away again, John and I are left with some privacy. At this moment, I take a breath and ask him the one question on my mind.
"If you don't mind me asking, are you a soldier?"
John visibly stiffens, eyes hardening a little.
"I was." Is all he says, tone flat.
"Did you serve in Vietnam?" I ask, unable to stop myself as my curiosity gets the better of me.
Once again, John seems reluctant to answer, and instantly starts to glance around, clearly watching for an escape route.
"Yeah." He affirms, gaze returning to me.
Shock fills me at this: I'd heard horrible things about the Vietnam War, about how the soldiers (on both sides) faced terrifying situations that I'd never dream of, my heart stuttering at this admonition.
"Really? That's...wow, that's…" I go to say something, finding myself speechless as I stare at the man before me, admiring him now in a totally new light, "God, you must be a strong person."
He blinks.
"Huh?"
"Well, you've done what I'd never be able to do, you've faced deadly situations, you've probably been in harrowing conditions and fights, I'd never have the strength to do what you did. Very few people do, so you must be a very strong person, mentally." I tell him, still in shock, "You definitely did the country proud, and I respect you for everything you've done. Thank you for that."
He stares at me in shock, eyes wide, lips parted.
"You...What?" Is all he manages, voice hitching.
"I respect you, and admire your bravery. You're a better person than any of the rest of us ever could be." I repeat, smiling gently at him.
For a long moment, he doesn't say anything, his expression remaining as it is, his body tense as he processes what I've said, clearly not quite believing me.
"You...respect me?" He stammers, quietly.
"I do." I nod, taking a sip of my soda.
"Thank you." John murmurs, pulling a face as he looks away, "You wouldn't be saying that if you knew what kinda things I've done."
"What you did isn't relevant to me, only that you served the country, and you did it with bravery, so for that, you have my respect." I reassure him, telling him the truth.
John stays silent this time, apparently too overcome for words.
"Do you...do you need somewhere to stay?" I finally break the silence that has descended on us, tapping a rhythm out onto the table.
"No, but I don't want to inconvenience you any more than I already have, so don't worry about it. I'll figure something out." The veteran shrugs, still a little taken aback.
"You're not inconveniencing me, I wouldn't ask if you were. I have space in my house if you want to take it." I offer him, once again smiling across at him.
For the first time, John smiles at me, his features loosening as the expression crosses his face.
"I'll take it."

Overprotection
Bio!Dad Bruce
Day 5: Overprotection
@biodad-bruce-month
Ao3 ~~~ First ~~~ Previous ~~~ Next
~~~~~~~~~~
About a week before her term began again,
Bruce pulled Mari into his office. After her telling them about the situation in Paris and him and Tim looking into it he was worried.
Seriously he found out the two heroes had contacted the Justice League but Lantern, Hal, had laughed at them stating it was a joke. After that they sent another video stating that all heroes affiliated with the Justice League, its members, their sidekicks, and even anyone that the above has worked with were banned from setting foot in Paris. Or else they would be treated as criminals. After that information was scarce. So he was rightfully worried about sending his daughter to a country he could do nothing in as a hero.
"Mari, your break is ending and I wanted to ask, do you want to go back to Paris to finish the term?" he waited for her answer watching her reaction.
---
Do I want to go back to Paris? Yes, no, maybe. She was confused and rightfully so. "Who wants to go back to a place to be held emotionally captive."
"So is that a no?" Bruce asked, making her realize she said that out loud.
"Well I... I want to stay in Paris it's my home, but this is my home too. I, I, I can't leave my... friends" she hoped she was convincing but even she knew she wasn't. Hell she stumbled on the word friends, yes she will miss her best friends but Chloe, Kagami, and Luka always call. They've been calling her once a day minimum, excluding patrols and fights, luckily no one has dropped in on their conversations or else... well she didn't know what her family would do with that information .
"Mari" Bruce was on her level, when did he get there, "Is something other than the akuma attacks bothering you?" This was the first time since arriving at the manor that she heard him speak that softly.
"N..." she bit her lip and closed her eyes making firm her resolve. "Yes there is something else"
"I'm here to listen. Even if you want to go back you still have your family behind you."
"Well there is a girl in my class who turned everyone and I mean everyone but one person in the class against me" she looked at him and she saw the same pensive expression when she was figuring out a lucky charm. "she lies with every breath and..." she started to cry.
---
As soon as she started to cry he hugged her. everyone who knows him knows he is not the person to go to with feelings, that would be
Dick, but here he is.
"You don't have to go back you can go to Gotham Academy with Damian. You never have to see them again." he whispered, but she shook her head against him.
"I have to go back" she whispered barely audibly. A frown began to appear on his features. All he wanted was to keep her safe but she refused everytime.
"Then Damian is going with you" he began, but he really should have seen her facial reaction. She had stiffened in his embrace, he thought it was because she would now have an ally so he had continued his rambling. "Damian has the most reign on his emotional state. Jason's not the most stable emotionally so that's out. Tim is helping run WE, but maybe I could get him into the Paris branch so you both have someone else to lean on. Dick is busy with his daughter not to mention the station so no. Cass..."
"NO!!!" Mari yelled pushing out of his arms, and
he was shocked and hurt and it must have shown. "Sorry, but no" her tone was firm, much
firmer than he had ever heard before.
"Why?"
She huffed before seeming to come to a conclusion "The Bats aren't allowed in Paris" she spoke quietly and then everything went silent and his brain functioning stopped.
When he was finally able to speak again, but still not think straight asked "Can you repeat that I don't think I heard you correctly."
She seemed to speak slowly and delibertly" The Bats are not allowed in Paris."
the had heard correctly but "How did you find out?" now he was concerned if she figured it out could others, they had always been careful about their identities. Steering clear of the topic with her.
"It was a few things, one the manor is much too quiet at night, two the thin excuses and sudden disappearances were all too familiar, and three Tikki."
Too quiet at night fine, can't do anything about that. Thin excuses and sudden disappearances, okay we can work on that.
"What is a Tikki?" He looked at her as if to elaborate but she remained silent as it waiting for him, oh, oh, "familiar, you're Ladybug" he looked at her and she gave him a knowing smirk. If he were Jason he would have cursed. Well that explains things. "Mini let us help you please" he watched her she passed through so many emotions fear, hesitance, regret, and ended on worry.
"I don't want to need to fight you Dad, I don't want to need to fight any of you." she was on the verge of tears.
"let us protect you, Mini, let us help."
"But"
"You're a Bat whether you like it or not and Bats stick together"
"How are we going to put an end to Hawkmoth"
"Do those butterflies show up on camera"
"Not until they are about to corrupt someone"
"That's out, how about..." the two stratigiod until Alfred said lunch was soon ready. "You know you never told me what a Tikki was and that was your third reason." she giggled.
"Come out Tikki. Dad this is Tikki the Kwamii of creation. She is the reason I can transform into Ladybug."
"Hello there Tikki. So how is it you were able to figure out our family's secret" he gave the little creature a small smile.
Tikki giggled and said in a chirpy voice "It's easy when you can phase through solid objects and end up in a cave with extremely recognizeable suits in it."
"Wait if you were in the cave why didn't the cameras catch anything?"
At this Mari held up her phone with the camera pointed it at Tikki and nothing was on the screen.
"How?"
"Kwamii and technology don't exactly mix. That's why you guys could look at a photo of me next to Ladybug and never realize we are the same person. That is until now since you have been told."
"Let's head over for lunch before chaos breaks loose and the boys come looking for us"
"Okay, wait! How are we going to tell everyone?"
"I might have an idea" Tikki's eyes shone with mischief.
---
Plagg may be the Kwamii of chaos but never, and I mean never get on the bad side of creation.
The plan was simple in the middle of the meal Tikki would phase out of Mari's pocket, under the table and then through it. Specifically next to Damian. Tikki was determined to get some sort of reaction from him.
She succeeded.
He was going to get his cap when she popped out. He jumped throwing his water all over him and falling backwards still on his chair.
No matter what happened Mari and Bruce were not supposed to react. Granted Mari recorded the whole thing. One thing she learned about the boys, have blackmail material it may end up saving you.
Damian, Dick, and Jason freaked out there was a lot, but I mean a lot of yelling.
Tikki had flown over and sat at the table between Marinette and Bruce where a plate of cookies were waiting for her.
Dick was the first to snap out of the trance of screaming, "Why is there a bug-mouse eating cookies on the table?" he still yelled and that was when Mari and Bruce looked up at them.
Damian was staring daggers at her reaching under the table, probably to get the katana hidden underneath, but he won't find it. Ah he figured out it was missing and is now, ohh he is pouting he really is a little kitten.
Tim, Dick, and Jason were staring yes, but they were staring at Mari and Bruce for an
explination.
"He is definately your brother little bug" she giggled still munching on a cookie.
"Really why is that Tikki?" Bruce had gone back to eating sparing a glance at Tikki.
"I called her a bug-mouse when I first met her too." Mari stated also going back to her meal.
Now all four boys were pouting. This continued until the meal was almost finished.
"sigh, I guess were going to have to tell them directly, non" Mari said over dramatically getting the boy's attention.
"That seems like the case" Bruce answered with a frown trying to cover the amusement in his voice. "In a family of the world's best detectives and they still can't figure it out with everything in front of them." Mari was begining to laugh.
"Perhaps it should have been in another location" Bruce responded.
"I still stand that transporting them to Paris would have been too much" Tikki replied to the conversation.
"The cave would have been overkill, but I still think their reactions would have been
just as funny" Mari countered. This got everyone's attention.
"Cave,what cave there's no cave" Jason surprisingly tried to do damage control.
"What do you mean by transporting to Paris"
Tim had asked looking between the three suspiciously. Then finally both Damian and Dick shared a look then looked at Mari and her and shouted "Ladybug!"
"Took you guys long enough" Mari smiled, Bruce was on the verge of laughter.
---
They then explained further the situation in Paris and in the end the boys seemed ready to fight the class as well as Hawkmoth for their little sister.
Damian and Tim would be joining her in Paris. Tim at WE Paris and Damian at her school and hopefully her class as well but there is still a week before she has to see those harpies she calls classmates.
Castaways
Word Count: 5.7k
Summary: After a freak storm, you find yourself shipwrecked on a deserted island with Pro Hero, Keigo Takami. While you work hard to get rescued, you realize too late that all may not be as it seems.
Themes/Warnings: Smut; Yandere!Hawks; Noncon; Bit of a slow burn; This is my first time writing smut so I can’t guarantee it will be good, but I like to think I can at least tell a good story lol
It was a beautiful day to be on the water. The weather report said there would be rain, but the only clouds you could see were far off on the horizon. You stretched out on the bow of the boat, letting the warm sun soak into your pores.
You closed your eyes, reflecting for a moment. At first you had thought a private boat ride was a bit... much, for a first date. But being here in the moment, you couldn’t have had a care in the world if you’d tried. You felt utterly at ease, with the caress of the sun above and the gentle rock of the waves below.
“Order up,” came a voice beside you.
You opened your eyes to see your date, Keigo, standing above you with a drink in each hand. One large wing stretched out behind him, blocking the sun so you didn’t have to squint. He passed you a glass and took a seat on the bow beside you. Lounging side by side, you both sipped your drinks and looked out over the ocean.
“You know,” you began, “I thought you were a little crazy when you asked me out here. On a boat, in the middle of nowhere.” You chuckled. “But I’m really glad I came.”
“Bet you’re also glad I’m not secretly an axe murderer,” Keigo joked, tossing back the rest of his drink. “Refill?”
You looked down at your own almost-empty drink and shook your head. You were feeling unusually drowsy from the combination of alcohol and warm sunshine, and what you honestly wanted was a nice nap.
Somehow, Keigo seemed to pick up on this and scooted closer to you, twisting his finger through a strand of your hair.
“You look so peaceful,” He mused. “You can go to sleep if you want.” “Noooo,” you protested weakly, a small smile on your lips. “I don’t want to fall asleep on you during our first date. I really am having a good time.”
Keigo let out a small chuckle. “Don’t worry, you falling asleep on me would fulfill... several fantasies. And don’t worry, I’ll protect ya from any sharks.”
With this, he swept you into his arms and planted a sweet kiss on your forehead. Normally, this would be far from anything you’d do on a first date - but your head felt so heavy, and the combination of rocking waves and the soft, soothing rhythm of his heartbeat had you falling asleep in seconds, smile still spread across your lips.
☙
You awoke suddenly. You had no idea how much time had passed, but you were immediately aware that several things had changed. First, you were no longer out on the bow of the boat. Instead, you lay inside the boat’s cabin with a towel wrapped around your shoulders. Secondly, you noticed that your hair was damp and dripping onto the planks below you. And finally you found the reason for all this: there was a storm raging outside.
“Oh!” shouted Keigo, noticing you wake. “I’m sorry, I had to move us inside. This storm sprung up so suddenly; there wasn’t even a cloud and then-”
“Keigo?” you muttered. Your body felt heavy and groggy as you came out of your sleep. You still weren’t alert enough to comprehend what was happening.
“Don’t worry,” assured Keigo. He turned around from his place at the ship’s wheel to face you with a smile, the same easygoing one he always seemed to have. “Lucky for you, I am a master of not only land and air, but also sea. We’re perfectly-”
A loud thud shook the boat as something hit the left window, hard.
“-safe.”
That noise had finished waking you up, and now you were on your feet, stumbling as the boat rocked violently. You made your way over to Keigo at the helm, tripping over your own two feet like a drunk, and gripped onto one of his arms for support. Looking out the windshield, you could see the full force of the squall. Wind slammed the rain back and forth like a whip, severely limiting visibility. You looked up at Keigo, who was focused straight ahead, his eyes seeming to try to pierce through the storm.
“Look, there!” he exclaimed. “There’s an island ahead and to the right.”
You squinted, but couldn’t see anything yourself.
“Should I steer us over?”
“I think so,” you agreed. The boat seemed sturdy, but it was small. Just a simple vessel meant for trips of no more than a day or two of light sailing. You didn’t like the thought of being out on the open water during a heavy storm like this.
Without another word, Keigo steered the boat in the direction of the island. The motor sputtered, but stayed running. Slowly, you became able to see the outlines of cliffs and trees through the downpour. There didn’t seem to be any dock, so you guessed this was going to be a beach landing and hoped Keigo knew what he was doing.
Suddenly, a huge shudder went through the boat, knocking you off your feet. Without taking his eyes off the storm, Keigo reached out and caught you with one of his strong wings.
“Hold on,” he commanded steadily, tucking you closer to him.
With terror, you realized that your feet were getting wet. Water was starting to seep into the cabin. You looked back to see a large hole in the boat’s hull, and were about to tell Keigo when another spasm rocked the boat. This time even Keigo lost his footing for a moment.
“Rocks,” he explained quickly. “We’re hitting the rocks.”
His voice was calm, but looking up you could see a hint of panic in his eyes. The wind was whipping furiously, and it felt like the boat might capsize at any moment. The shore was tantalizingly close, but you felt in danger of being swept away before you could reach its safety.
Keigo took his eyes away from the storm for a second, to look at you reassuringly. He gave you a smile and opened his mouth to say something, almost shouting against the sound of the wind.
“Don’t worry, we’ll be fi-”
And then, all at once, there was a crash, a jolt, and you felt yourself and Keigo being thrown through the windshield and into darkness.
☙
You found yourself waking up again, this time on the soft sand of a beach. The sky was dark, but clear - thank goodness. Looking to your left, you saw a small campfire, and beyond it, Keigo.
“Good evening, sleepyhead,” he said lightly. “Had me worried for a bit.”
You looked down at yourself, making sure you were all in one piece. Amazingly, there was not a scratch on you. Your muscles were a bit sore, but that was it. Nothing hurt, nothing bled.
Looking back at Keigo, you noticed that the same could not be said about him. He was covered in bruises on his arms and legs, and he had a cut running across one of his cheeks that was still freely bleeding.
He must have noticed your look of surprise, because he said, “Don’t worry, I was just about to clean myself up.” He patted a first aid kit at his feet. “Just wanted to make sure we had some warmth first. It’s getting to be night.”
He looked up and out over the sea, and you followed his gaze to marvel at the stars. You had never seen so many. Being far away from any light pollution, the sky looked like a swirling, winding map of light. And there were so many colors in the sky; it was unbelievable. Casting your gaze downward, you landed on the washed-up wreckage of the ship. It was a miracle that it looked to be mostly in one piece.
“Keigo, what happened?”
“Well,” he said, rummaging through the first aid kit. “I’m sure you noticed the storm.”
Even in a situation like this, he was lighthearted and joking. Part of you found it a little appalling, but part of you wished you could be more like him - more able to quell the rising panic in your chest.
“It really did come out of nowhere,” he continued. “Never seen anything like it. And it was gone just as soon as it came.”
It was both alarming and astonishing that such a short storm could cause so much destruction. You stared numbly into the campfire as he went on.
“Luckily you’re safe, and that’s what matters.”
You looked up, and Keigo was staring back at you intently. You could tell he meant it. Even though his own body was battered, it was more important to him that you were safe. You supposed that was part of what being a Pro Hero was all about, but it still sent a shiver down your spine to think that he cared for you that deeply, even if only in a professional capacity. He returned his attention to his injuries, dabbing something on his scraped arms. You moved over to help.
“Thanks,” he laughed. “I’ve had worse, but it never hurts to have a pretty girl taking care of ya.”
He winked. Okay, maybe the care and concern extended a little beyond professionalism.
“Anyway, I took stock of the boat while you were knocked out,” he resumed. “And we have enough supplies to last a few weeks. Which is good, since it looks like we may not be going anywhere soon.”
“Wait, a few weeks?” you interrupted. “Can’t you just, like, fly us out of here?”
“Well, about that...” Keigo mumbled as he turned his back to you.
Where once there had been two brilliant red wings, now there were little more than stubs with feathers protruding from his back.
“It was a pretty rough landing,” he explained. “A lot of my feathers were torn off and swept away while we were in the water. And on top of that, most got mangled anyway when we were thrown out the window. Honestly, I probably couldn’t even get myself off the ground right now.”
At this point, Keigo looked to you and noticed that you were on the verge of tears.
“Hey, don’t worry though.” He took your hand and clasped his fingers around it tightly. “I promise, I’ll take care of you here. You’ll always be safe with me.” You looked up into his soft, golden eyes. His smile beamed back at you as he opened his mouth to add:
“And hey, what a first date this has turned out to be!”
☙
It undoubtedly was turning out to be quite the “first date.” It only took a few days until you had somewhat settled into a routine. There was a lot of free time, but it allowed you and Keigo to get to know each other and work on projects to make your lives easier on the island.
Keigo had insisted on making identical shelters for the two of you, side-by-side.
“So I can keep a better eye on you,” he explained cheerfully.
At first he had wanted the two of you to share a single lean-to and bed of leaves, but you insisted that you were more comfortable being at least a little ways apart, and eventually he relented.
“I get it,” he teased, “not ‘that kind of girl.’ But you know I just want to look out for you, chickadee.”
What exactly there was to look out for, you weren’t sure. You had both circled the island several times - it wasn’t that large, and could be walked in a few hours - and the place was completely deserted. Your only fellow inhabitants were a large population of wild chickens, much to Keigo’s delight. Every morning before you woke, he would wander off into one of the more forested areas. And by the time you were awake, he would be wandering back with fresh meat. You didn’t particularly like thinking about where it came from, but you were grateful for the food.
And chickens weren’t all the island had to offer. There were also delicious fruits and wild carrots, which you had stumbled on while clearing some weeds from around your campsite. There was even a spring of fresh water only a ten minute walk from the beach. It was almost the perfect island to be stranded on. And all of this, along with the nonperishable food from the boat, ensured that you were both well fed and hydrated.
Once, you had asked Keigo about the food. Why there was so much on board for just a day trip. He shrugged.
“Better to be prepared and not need it than to need it and not be prepared.”
☙
While there were certainly worse people to be stranded with than your handsome date, you were still looking forward to being rescued. The whole situation was overwhelming, and, although Keigo was doing a great job at playing survivalist and keeping you warm and fed, it made you uncomfortable to be in such a committed situation with someone you had only been on one date with.
Granted, the one date had now turned into a two-week-long stay on a deserted island, but nonetheless you were hoping to get back to civilization so that the two of you could pursue a more normal, less stressful and intense relationship.
Keigo himself seemed unaffected by stress as far as you could see. The first morning on the island, you had asked him how long it would take for his wings to grow back.
“Last time I got this beat up?” he considered. “It took a few months.”
That was not the answer you had been hoping to hear, but it did inspire you to branch out and think of other creative ways to speed up your rescue.
The first thought was obviously your cell phone. However, one look at the glitching screen told you that your phone had been destroyed by the impromptu swim during your arrival. Keigo’s was the same way.
You then turned your attention to making a good old fashioned “SOS” sign out of rocks, which Keigo helped with. You didn’t have much hope for it - you had seen no planes or other boats since being marooned, and you didn’t even have an idea of where the island was in relation to any populated areas.
“Won’t people start looking for you?” you asked Keigo hopefully as you both worked on the sign.
“Eventually,” Keigo agreed. “But honestly, my friends are used to me disappearing on missions without notice. It could be awhile before they realize something is up.”
You, unfortunately, were the same way. A loner. No close friends who would be suspicious of you dropping off the face of the Earth for a few weeks. Of course your presence would be missed at work, but of course you hadn’t told anyone at the office that you would be on a boat,in the middle of nowhere, with the No. 2 Pro Hero for fear of the gossip that would spread. They wouldn’t even know where to start looking for you.
The two of you really might as well have fallen off the face of the Earth.
A few days after the completion of your SOS sign, you had an epiphany. The body of the ship was still on the beach, and ships had radios. Even small ones like this. The ship itself might be beyond repair, but the radio could still be functional. You sifted through the rubble to get to the cabin, which was surprisingly intact.
Keigo wandered up behind you as you went over to the radio. It was rare for you two not to be in each others’ line of sight these days.
“Whatcha doin’?” he asked.
“I just remembered, we can use the radio to get out of here!” you responded excitedly.
Keigo said nothing. You flicked on the radio and were delighted to see the small green light on its casing come to life. You held the receiver up to your ear, and were greeted by silence. You flipped to another channel. Silence. And another. More silence. Your heart sinking, you went through the channels one by one, and were rewarded with nothing.
Keigo came up to put an arm around your waist. “No luck?” he asked calmly.
“I don’t understand,” you sobbed. “How can this be? The light is on; it should be working. There’s not even static!”
“Let’s not wear out the battery,” Keigo suggested, reaching past you to flick the radio off.
The green light, and your hopes of rescue, blinked out.
“Maybe I could fix it,” you mused, brightening a little.
“Maybe,” Keigo agreed, giving you a squeeze. “I think I have some tools in here somewhere.”
☙
The days drew on, and you began to feel stagnated. You hadn’t made any progress toward being rescued. Despite several weeks passing, Keigo’s wings did not look any fuller. The bruises and scar across his face had healed nicely, but his wings remained bare. You had no idea how their growth worked, but you had been hoping that by now he might be able to fly himself - even if it meant leaving you on the island alone, he could at least scout for a rescue ship during the day, or perhaps even fly back to civilization and tell them where to find you.
Keigo, however, had grown increasingly reluctant to leave your side. You supposed the isolation was getting to him and making him clingy. You were his only company after all. And besides, it was kind of cute, having an otherwise confident and laid-back man follow you around like a puppy dog. You could tell he was infatuated with you, and you couldn’t deny that you had been developing stronger feelings for him as well. It was hard not to when he spent most of the day in just his cargo shorts, sweat glistening on his muscled back.
Still, you insisted on keeping your separate sleeping arrangements. Keigo pouted about it, but seemed to understand that you weren’t ready for that yet.
Aside from your daily chores of sleeping and eating, you spent most of your time cleaning up around the campsite, playing games to pass the time - you were both pros at Rock Checkers by this point - and just talking to each other. You enjoyed hearing about all of Keigo’s exploits as a hero, and he seemed just as interested in the details of your average civilian life. You had spent so much time together at this point; it was impossible not to grow close, and maybe even a little dependent. You couldn’t blame Keigo - you liked having him around too.
Occasionally, Keigo would disappear into the dense forest during the afternoons, and you would be left with free time to work on tinkering with the radio. On one such occasion, before leaving, he gave you a playful warning.
“You stay right there while I’m gone, chickadee. You never know what big scary monster you might run into in these woods.”
“I’m pretty sure it’s just you in those woods, Keigo,” you returned, laughing.
Keigo just smirked and disappeared into the trees.
☙
Later that same afternoon, you sat hunched over the radio. Not only did Keigo have a toolbox stowed in the ship’s cabin, but the radio operation manual as well. These resources had proved to be very helpful in taking the radio apart, but not too helpful in actually getting it to work. You were beginning to grow frustrated when a voice behind you startled you.
“Hey!” called Keigo. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
You turned to see his messy mop of blond hair poking through the doorway behind you.
“Come here,” he said excitedly. “I have something to show you!”
“Hang on just a minute, Keigo,” you responded. “I think I’m close to a breakthrough here. The manual says there should be a green wire right here-” you pointed to a terminal node on the radio “-but I can’t see one. It must have been knocked loose. If I can just find that, we should be able to-”
“Aw, come onnnnnn” whined Keigo. “It’s getting dark out, and you’ve been working too hard. This can wait until tomorrow. I have something I really want to show youuuu.”
You sighed. He could be immature at times, but his childlike excitement was also something that drew you. You couldn’t resist the excited light in his eyes.
“Okay,” you relented, putting your tools and loose parts away. “If you’re so eager, I guess we’d better get going.”
Practically skipping, Keigo dragged you into the woods. You had not explored much of this part of the island, seeing as it was in the opposite direction from the fresh water source. You hadn’t really had the interest or need to.
“Close your eyes,” Keigo commanded giddily.
You must have been getting close to whatever the surprise was. After a few minutes of guiding you through the trees, Keigo put his hands on your shoulders to stop you. He put something rough into your hands.
“This is a rope ladder. Climb up and I’ll let you know when you’re getting close to the top.”
You smiled a little to yourself as you started up.
“And don’t worry, I’ll catch you if you slip,” he added.
At the top, Keigo made you keep your eyes closed until he could scramble up to join you. You had expected to be in a tree, but beneath your feet it felt like solid ground. You guessed that this, whatever this was, was what Keigo had been working on during the times he disappeared into the woods.
“Okay,” said Keigo, a little out of breath as he came up behind you. “Go ahead and open your eyes.”
You opened your eyes and gasped as Keigo wrapped his arms around you. You were in the trees, their leaves surrounding you on all sides. Actually, you realized, you were between several trees, standing on a firm platform of vines and leaves suspended within their branches. The trunk of one rose up through the center of the floor like a giant column. Peering beyond it, you had a magnificent view of the ocean and sky, where the sunset was just disappearing, giving way to night.
“You like it, baby?” Keigo whispered in your ear. “I built this just for us.”
“It’s - wow it’s - definitely impressive,” you stuttered.
You had the sudden and overwhelming feeling that you were perched in a nest. A nest belonging to a very large, very strong bird.
Keigo nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck.
“I know you’ve been feeling shy, chickadee, so I wanted to make our first time extra special.”
“You wha-”
Before you could finish your sentence, Keigo spun you around and planted a kiss on your lips, silencing them. One hand was in your hair and the other around your waist, pressing you fully against him. His mouth moved with desperation, trying to force yours to open further.
“I’ve dreamed of this for so long,” Keigo panted, lowering you both to the floor. “And I know you have too. I see the way you look at me, baby.”
Keigo’s own eyes blazed with hunger, his smile beaming above you. In the dying light, his skin seemed to glow, taking on an unearthly sheen. You were speechless, and unsure of what to say even if you could find your voice.
Keigo started to lift your tattered shirt, and that snapped you back to reality.
“Please, wait,” you begged, grabbing at his hands.
“You don’t need to be shy anymore,” Keigo insisted, pushing away your hands. He reached beneath your shirt to squeeze one of your breasts. “I love you and I’m going to take care of you. Always. Please, please just let me make you feel good!”
“Keigo, STOP!” you demanded.
He stopped, and pulled his hands away from you slightly.
“Keigo, I- you’ve been so nice to me,” you started. “But I’m sorry, I’m just not ready for this. This is all so intense and I- I just want to go home so we can have a normal relationship instead of being stuck on a fucking deserted island!”
Keigo backed off from you, looking hurt and dejected. You were almost in tears, and your voice hitched as you spoke.
“I’m sorry,” you repeated. “I think… maybe it would be best if you slept here tonight and I went back to the campsite.”
Keigo made no response. Unsure of yourself, you stood up and made your way over to the rope ladder. His silence persisted as you lowered yourself down and started back in the direction of the campsite.
☙
Eventually, you found your way back to camp. It was fully dark by the time you reached the side-by-side lean-tos, and you flopped down in one of them, eyes blurred from crying.
You didn’t know what had happened back there. Keigo had been nothing but sweet and generous throughout all of this. Even his treehouse, while a bit presumptuous and misguided, was a sweet testament to his feelings for you. You just weren’t prepared for how fast things were moving.
Maybe you had overreacted. It was too dark at this point to try and find your way back to Keigo, but in the morning you would find him and explain things. That you had feelings for him, but wanted to focus on getting out of here before pursuing anything more.
You leaned back and closed your eyes. You had half expected Keigo to follow you, but it seemed he hadn’t and was going to spend the night apart as you requested. Uneasily, you drifted to sleep.
☙
You were prodded awake in the middle of the night by a stabbing sensation in your shoulder. Groggily, you propped yourself up and felt behind you for whatever loose twig was the culprit. As you did, you realized with some amusement that you had fallen asleep on Keigo’s bed. He always took the left lean-to and you took the right. It had become a sort of unspoken rule, like a couple who each has “their side” of the bed.
You felt a pang of regret thinking this. If only Keigo hadn’t come on so strong. The truth was that you did want what he wanted. You wanted to be with him. But the stress of your situation and the intensity with which he tried to seduce you had been too much. You hoped you could work things out in the morning.
“Such an idiot,” you muttered. “Hope I didn’t ruin our chances for good.”
Finally, your fingers located the thing that had been poking you. It was oddly smooth, and, as you saw lifting it out of the pile of bedding, not a twig at all.
You held it up to the moonlight in disbelief: a little green wire.
Your stomach dropped. Swiftly and silently, you stalked toward the wrecked ship, needing to be sure. By the light of the moon, you quietly opened the casing of the radio, found the node with the missing connection, and slipped the green wire in. It reached perfectly to the node on the other side.
You tried not to let the panic set in. But something was very wrong. You felt the need to get out of there, away from the confined space of the ship.
Tumbling into open air, you began to pace on the wet sand, away from the boat and the campsite. Your thoughts were a whirlwind. Why would Keigo keep that wire from you? Why would he have it in the first place? The answer was obvious, but you didn’t want to believe it. You had been walking aimlessly for at least ten minutes, frightened and confused.
Suddenly, your foot hit something sharp in the sand.
☙
You fell to your hands and knees on the beach, and immediately scrambled around to see what had pricked you. There was a sharp point sticking out from the packed sand, and you dug around to reveal the object.
It was a feather.
Brilliantly red even in the glow of night, and far too big to belong to any normal bird. Tears welled up in your eyes. You continued to dig and uncovered another, then another. Soon you had unearthed a pit filled with the things.
“Enjoying your night without me, chickadee?”
One of the feathers zipped past you, toward the sound of the voice.
Trembling, you turned to face him as plumes of feathers swirled around you. One by one, they found their way to Keigo, and his wings began to reconstruct themselves in front of your eyes. Keigo’s hands were stuffed in his pockets as he looked down on you.
“Glad I don’t have to keep secrets anymore,” he said flatly. “I was really beginning to miss having these.”
His wings were stretched out to their full length, making his presence impossible to ignore and extremely intimidating. He relaxed them slightly and sighed.
“Keigo, you- you knew this whole time,” you spat. “The radio, the feathers, the food - this whole island!”
The man in front of you said nothing.
“Why?” you asked weakly. “Why would you do this?”
“What? Is it so bad to want some time with you?” Keigo shot back suddenly. “I told you, you had nothing to worry about. I love you. I can take care of you here.”
With this, he flew toward you at frightening speed. Before you had time to attempt an escape, he was on top of you. Pressing you down into the wet sand with the full weight of his body.
“Why can’t you just be appreciative? I did all this for you. Just to be with you!”
“You could have killed me!” you screamed into his face. “You weren’t keeping me safe! You could have killed me!”
At your words, Keigo’s expression darkened drastically. He was frowning at you, and you had never seen him like that before. No, not just frowning, but scowling.
Your shirt was torn off before you could even register what was happening.
“You said it yourself,” remarked Keigo, towering above you as he kept you pinned with his legs. A smile was creeping back on his lips. “I’ve been so nice to you. But I think I’ve been too nice. I think it’s time for me to take what I want.”
Keigo grabbed at the rest of your clothes and dragged them off of you, leaving you exposed beneath him. Then he undid his own pants and let himself spring free.
Slowly, all while looking down at his captive, Keigo used a hand to pump his throbbing cock. Reaching, he took one of your hands and wrapped it around his length, holding it there as he leaned down to bring his face right against yours.
“This is exactly what you want, you little tease,” he whispered harshly. With his other hand, he plunged two fingers inside you, feeling as your walls became slick and clenched around him. “I know you do.”
Smiling wide, Keigo straightened up. With his hands, he pushed your arms to either side of your head and pressed them against the sand. With his tongue, he trailed up and along your body from hip to breast, making you squirm. He was marking you as his, showing that he owned and could do whatever he wanted with you.
“Keigo, stop!” you cried once again, trying to look anywhere but up at him.
“No,” he growled. “This time, I won’t.”
He slammed his cock straight into your core, making you cry out in shock and pain.
“Quiet, baby. Wouldn’t want anyone to hear us!” Keigo taunted.
He thrust into you again, this time only eliciting a whimper. Keigo’s own unrestrained grunts and moans mixed with the sound of the waves against the beach as he continued at his frantic pace. After a few minutes, he regained his composure and looked down, where you were trying to shrink into the sand beneath him.
“Don’t worry, baby,” Keigo crooned. “You know I really do love you, and I promised I’d make you feel good, too.”
Using a wing to continue holding your arm in place, Keigo brought one of his hands up to his mouth and gave two fingers a scandalous lick. He never stopped looking down at you as he did so, an amused little look flashing across his face as you shivered at the sight. He brought the hand down between your legs, and began to rub slow circles around your clit, his saliva mixing with the wetness that already coated you. Involuntarily, you let out a moan.
“Yeah, that’s right,” he coaxed. He began to pump his cock in and out of you again, slowly this time. “Show me how much you want this.”
Not letting up, Keigo leaned down to use his mouth on you as well, biting and licking at your collar bones. He picked up his pace steadily. Your hands remained pinned, and all you could do was writhe under the onslaught of his touch.
His fingers were rough, and they grazed your clit relentlessly, sending shocks up your sides. You could feel a coil winding deep in your stomach, and despite yourself, you were desperate for a release. Keigo could feel you tightening around him as he neared his own climax.
Forgetting the restraints, Keigo shot up and pulled you with him, continuing to pound into you while on his knees. With your hips raised in the air, Keigo kept the pressure of his fingers on your most sensitive spot, sending you past the point of no return.
As he felt your walls clenching, he growled into the night:
“Tell me who makes you feel this fucking good!”
“K-Keigo!” you screamed, your body convulsing as you reached your climax.
“That’s right,” he grunted, slamming you both down into the sand again. “And it’s because you’re mine. All. Mine.”
At these words, you felt his cum gushing into you, making you flush from head to toe. He held his arms around you tightly as he rode out his own high, moaning in a gravelly, guttural voice.
The night was quiet for a moment, with only the sound of heavy breaths and crashing waves to echo off the beach as Keigo remained poised above you.
Finally, as his panting slowed, Keigo spoke.
“We should probably get comfortable, chickadee. It might be a long while before they find us.”
Congrats on reaching your follower milestone soon, dear! It was tough choosing a prompt because there are some really nice ones on the list—but I'll go with #2 aspectabund for Julie and Luke. I'd love to be less predictable and choose another 'verse than "gimme a chance" but I am weak. (Unless you’re really not feeling it, then I'd love to see a oneshot of your liking. No pressure. ♥️)
thank you!! and thank you for this prompt and pairing because I had actually imagined this exact scene weeks ago but I knew I wasn't going to be able to make it work in the full fic, so now I get to just write it as a deleted scene for you! in the timeline of the gimme a chance AU, this is set after the last deleted scene but before the scene with Alex and Reggie in chapter 6. just a little moment of Luke and Julie still not really knowing what they are but recklessly forging ahead anyway❤️ (with some Flynn backstory thrown in for good measure!)
aspectabund - letting emotions show easily through the face or eyes (Rated M for consistency, language, and a fairly suggestive setting)
Luke could study Julie in any light and find her beautiful, but there was something about seeing her under the dimmed interior lighting of the bar bathroom that felt particularly special. Maybe it was the way she seemed to glow underneath the muted lights that surrounded the bathroom mirror. Maybe it was because it was the first place he had ever experienced a softer, more vulnerable moment with her. Maybe it was because her presence alone somehow managed to turn even the grungiest of atmospheres into something beautiful and magical.
Whatever the reason, Luke had come to love the times he managed to steal away with her into the bathroom, losing himself in the feel of her lips pressed against his and her warm skin beneath his seeking fingers, every inch of him filled to the brim with thoughts of her and her alone. His port in the storm, the guiding light he couldn’t help but follow. Julie Molina, his brightest burning star.
Tonight was almost identical to every other night that Julie came by the bar. Another open mic, another flirty encounter exchanged via lyrics over shots of tequila, the background noise of whoever happened to be up on stage never quite loud enough to pull them out of their own little personal bubble. Dante was working, which meant Luke didn’t feel quite so bad about sneaking into the bathroom during his 10 to find Julie waiting, lips soft and inviting against his own, curves just as sweet as he remembered though always better than he imagined in his dreams at night. She had been driving him crazy all night in her cropped band tee and the jeans that he had a love/hate relationship with. Denim shouldn’t be allowed to look that good and then be that damned difficult to take off.
They had come together quickly, never willing to waste their stolen time together when there was a clock ticking and a bar still full of patrons just a door away. As much as it might feel like their own private world locked away in the bathroom, the real world still continued on outside without much cause for stopping. Tonight though, Luke couldn’t help but linger just a moment after he finally came down from the way Julie had left him gasping her name. Her head was still tucked into the crook of his neck, her hair even wilder than it had been when she first showed up. She was an absolute vision. A true goddess. It blew his mind she was even willing to give him the time of day, and he was constantly reminded of how lucky he was to have these small, stolen moments with her.
Julie seemed to notice his extra attention, pulling her flushed face clear of its hiding place and regarding him with a look that he couldn’t quite decipher. Soft, but still guarded. Their eyes met and he was so sure she would see it then. The love he was never able to fully hold back anymore. He studied her from head to toe, let his gaze caress every inch of her body with the kind of soft adoration that tended to make itself known the second she was within his vicinity these days.
“What’s going on in that head of yours?”
Her question wasn’t an accusation, but Luke felt the need to hide from her probing all the same. It wasn’t her fault he had fallen in love with her. He didn’t get to force that on her when she hadn’t ever asked for it or encouraged it in the first place. His mind blanked for a moment, scrambling to come up with a plausible answer to her question. He blurted the first thing he could think of, not sure where the thought had come from but willing to follow it to the end if it meant insight into Julie and steering clear of his own emotional turmoil.
“Where does Flynn think you are when you come here?”
Julie pulled back further, her legs closing slightly as if it would force him out of his position there. Luke didn’t retreat. Kept his hands alongside the dip of her waist, fingers softly stroking the bare skin underneath the shirt she still wore. He made sure his gaze was soft and steady. He wasn’t trying to chastise her, just maybe understand her a bit better. She had said Flynn didn’t know about the nights she came to the bar, but there was no way her best friend was missing the fact that three nights out of the week, Julie wasn’t home until well past midnight.
“The library.”
The answer seemed so ridiculous that Luke couldn’t help the laughter that bubbled up in his chest. Julie’s arms folded across her chest, nose scrunching into an adorable pout that he wanted to kiss away. She tilted her head to the side, hair falling over her shoulder, and he could practically read her mind through the look on her face. She was not amused. Luke backpedaled a bit, trying to explain exactly why her cover up seemed so flimsy to him.
“You tell Flynn you’re going to the library and then you come home looking like that and she just...believes you’ve been at the library?”
Luke pointed towards the mirror behind them, and Julie turned to follow his finger. She seemed startled to see her own appearance: hair wild and mussed, cheeks still flushed with leftover satisfaction, lips swollen from his kisses, eyes shining in a way he had only seen right after he played for her and right after he made her fall apart with his touch. She tucked a stray curl behind her ear, smoothing the smaller hairs along her temple as if that would control them. It didn’t do much, just like Luke knew it wouldn’t. Julie’s mouth twisted to the side in an annoyed grimace, and she turned away from the mirror to look up at him once more.
“Well, no. I tell her I’m going to the library when I leave the apartment, and then I usually do go there for a few hours before coming here. She’s always asleep by the time I get home. Flynn is a strict lights-out-at-10 type of girl, unless Carrie is the one keeping her up.”
A light shudder worked its way down Julie’s spine and Luke didn’t even try to think about the ways Carrie might be keeping Flynn awake past 10. Instead, he chose to focus on the minor revelations about the inner workings of exactly how Julie ended up at the bar every Tuesday and Thursday as well as most Saturdays.
“Huh. That weirdly makes sense for her. Yet another reason for her to hate me, I guess. Sleeping that early is for grannies and kids.”
He delivered the last line with a teasing smirk. He mostly meant it as a joke. It was easier to poke fun at Flynn if he was doing it in a way that also kind of poked fun at himself. Then it wasn’t so much him shit talking her as it was him admitting he wasn’t always his favorite person either. Julie must have seen something behind his eyes or on his face though because all of the sudden she softened, her hands raising from where they had been holding her up on the counter to cradle his face instead. The move was so intimate it made him want to purr. He settled for leaning into her hold, head turned to sneak a quick kiss against her palm. When he met her eyes, the guarded walls in her gaze had melted, leaving only a gentle kind of fondness in their wake.
“Flynn doesn’t hate you.”
Luke snorted. Julie’s tone was soft and sweet, but he knew a lie when he heard one, no matter how nicely it was said.
“Yes, she does.”
He could tell she was about to argue, so he lifted one finger to rest against her lips, effectively cutting off whatever she had been about to say as he continued talking.
“Flynn hasn’t liked me since we first met, and I asked her who the cute blonde musician was without knowing it was Carrie. Then I made the mistake of going off about how I knew Carrie was a musician because, well, I just knew, and she liked that even less. But I was upgraded to hate the night you came to our show with her, and I made a complete ass of myself. It’s fine, Julie. I know the score. You don’t have to pretend she likes me just cause we’re...ya know...”
He trailed off awkwardly, not quite willing to label them as casual when that had become his absolute least favorite word in the English language lately. The finger that had been held to her lips curled back into the palm of his hand so he could raise it to scratch at the back of his neck. The sight seemed to soften Julie even more, one of her hands falling from its spot against his cheek to rest against his bare chest, directly above his heart. There was a tenderness behind the action that was new for them, Julie’s eyes warm and gentle as she regarded him. He wasn’t sure he liked the way it made his heart stutter and constrict, wished he had the extra layer of his shirt between them for the first time ever, but she was still perched on top of it where he had laid it down as a barrier between her and the countertop.
“Luke.”
The sound of his name sent another wave of longing through him. His eyes had to be practically overflowing with the depths of his feelings for her by now. She had to be able to see it.
“Flynn does not hate you. She just...doesn’t understand you.”
He couldn’t quite believe that they were in a bathroom at Ebbie’s, half-dressed and still just barely back on the Earthly plane, and somehow, they were discussing Flynn of all people. Luke generally did his best not to think about Flynn, especially lately when he was certain if she ever found out what he was up to there wouldn’t be a place in this world he would be able to hide from her. He tried to play it off again, make a joke that would lighten the atmosphere and get them off of the topic that he was constantly pretending didn’t hurt as much as it did.
“Julie, Flynn isn’t the one I’m worried about hating me. That ship has sailed, and she’s the captain of it. It’s okay. As long as I have you, I’m not gonna worry about something I can’t change.”
Okay, so that was maybe a bit sappier than he should have worded it, but the sentiment was true, all the same. It was getting harder and harder for him to hold back those pieces of himself lately. The parts that wanted desperately to belong to Julie and no one else.
The delicate hand that had been resting against his cheek trailed a gentle path up to tuck itself behind his head, dislodging his own hand from where it had still been nervously scratching. There was a new look in her eyes, one he hadn’t seen before, not even when he had tried to take her home and had been offered a small acquiescence in the form of dropping her off at her own home instead. This look was much softer, almost endless in its depth and Luke felt his breath catch as if she had stolen it away herself. This was a look that felt precious and vulnerable and like maybe she was finally going to strike the word casual from the definition of their relationship. He dipped his head, forehead falling to rest against her own so he could bathe in that look for as long as possible. Julie didn’t pull away. Instead, her grip tightened over his heart and around the back of his neck. An invitation for him to close that small gap between them once more and bring his lips to hers.
This kiss was different too. No edge to it at all, just a soft sigh of movement against one another. Neither one taking from the other, each simply offering a piece of themselves. A gentle understanding, a moment of true harmony together where they were on the same page. Luke had no fucking clue what, exactly, that page was, but he would stay there and reread it over and over again until he died if it meant holding Julie against him like this.
The timer on his phone chirped, the sound just barely audible through the material of his pants. It was a warning, their warning, that this stolen moment was fast coming to an end and if Luke didn’t get back out to the bar someone would come looking. Luke had never hated an interruption more in his entire life. For as long as he lived, he didn’t think he’d be able to reach his limit of basking in the presence of Julie Molina, but especially like this when it felt all the more precious and fleeting.
Slowly, she pulled herself back, their lips parting in a way that told him she would have continued to linger without the interruption. He almost gave into the temptation of ignoring the alarm so that he could dive back in, but then she pressed her fingers against her lips. The action, so simple and unassuming, nearly had his heart bursting. Because she wasn’t looking at him. Her eyes were still closed, her breathing fast and erratic. When she finally met his gaze a good ten seconds later, he was shocked to see a type of longing he had only recognized in himself reflected in the melted chocolate of her irises.
“You have to get back out there before Dante comes looking for you.”
Her voice was breathless and just this side of needy, like the thought of him leaving made her all the more desperate to keep him there. It was the strongest show of willpower that he didn’t haul her back into his arms for a repeat performance of when he first arrived in the bathroom. He nodded slowly, the sound of his metal chains and belt buckle clinking as he readjusted his jeans the only noise in the room. She slipped off the counter, offering his shirt back to him with a shy smile as she pulled her own jeans back into place. The cotton slipped over his head, and Luke silently cursed the way it obstructed his view of Julie, even if it was barely more than a couple seconds.
“See you back out there?”
He wasn’t sure why he asked. Julie always left before him, giving him a few extra moments to wash his hands and get his head back into work mode before he had to slip behind the bar once more. This time though, she wasn’t rushing to leave. Instead, she bit her lip, forehead wrinkling slightly before she gave a soft shake of her head. The walls that had disappeared in the last few minutes were firmly back in place when she met his gaze.
“I have to get some work done on a project for school. I cut my library time short tonight to get here earlier.”
It wasn’t really a rejection, but it sure as hell felt like one. Luke tried not to let it show on his face, but he wasn’t sure he managed to pull it off. He felt his own fingers at the back of his neck again and wondered when they had gotten there.
“Yeah, yeah, it’s cool. I get it.”
He shrugged a bit, tried to get some bounce back in his step as he moved towards the door.
“Luke...?”
He turned at the sound of Julie’s voice, just barely managing not to lose it when her eyes flashed momentarily with that same fleeting look of vulnerable longing.
“Next open mic is Thursday, right?”
She was trying to get them back on script. Trying to get back to that place that felt more familiar, less intense. Luke couldn’t fault her for her. He was the one that kept trying to push them outside of the confines she had created. He sighed softly, stepping close so he could press a quick kiss against her forehead.
“Next open mic is Thursday. I’ll be here.”
Her lips curved just a bit, her smile small but no less brilliant.
“See you then, Rockstar.”
He left then. Had to force his feet to move before he fell to his knees and begged her for more. More time, more stolen moments, more commitment, more of everything that he so desperately wanted from her and no one else. Luke threw himself into filling orders behind the bar, so busy he didn’t see Julie make her way out. If Dante noticed the storm cloud that hovered above his head for the rest of the night, he didn’t mention it.
He promised himself that when he saw her again on Thursday, he would let it go. Loving her didn’t give him the right to demand more. In fact, if he really loved her, he would find a way to be content with what she offered. Because if there was one thing he knew for sure, it was that he wasn’t ready to give her up just yet. And he didn’t think she was ready to give him up yet, either. So, he would stay, and he would accept what he was given, because every new moment meant another memory for him to carry with him when this whole thing ended. And somehow, that would have to be enough.
#32 sounds like fun!
things you said I wouldn’t understand
Happy ever after doesn't mean forever. It just means time. A little time. But that's not the sort of thing you could ever understand, is it?
Perhaps not, the Doctor reflected, his knee bouncing impatiently beneath the table as they finally approached the end of their last course. (The food was delicious, probably. He hadn’t really noticed; too busy gripping River’s hand, in case she got any more daft ideas in between starters and dessert, and trying not to stare too much.)
Could he ever accept that a little time with her would be enough? Of course not. His entire being revolted against the idea with a ferocity that left him shaken. No amount of years or centuries, no number of lives with her could ever be enough. But they wanted the same thing, in the end: every last precious second they could get. That, he would gladly give her.
Things always fell so effortlessly into place with River. It had been wonderful enough just basking in her presence, but the instant she recognised him, they were together again. She slipped back into that intimacy without a hint of hesitation, and it felt as comfortable and as thrilling as it always had. Of course the Doctor had known she didn’t care which face he had on, but it was another thing to experience how joyfully she welcomed a new one. With decades of night ahead of them, he felt the sun was truly shining on this old face for the first time.
“Staring again,” River observed, startling him out of his reverie. She was covering a smile by dabbing her napkin at the corner of her mouth, but it did nothing to hide the light in her eyes.
“Ah,” the Doctor said, not bothering to feign embarrassment. “Sorry.”
“Is that a particular quirk of this face?”
“Not generally, no.”
“Missed me, then?”
“You could say that,” he said, his voice wavering.
She turned toward him, laying her other hand over his. “How long?”
A thousand years. Five billion. Forever. So long that his memories of her had begun to seem like an impossibly beautiful dream; too good to have been real, to have ever graced his undeserving life.
“Too long,” the Doctor answered. He wondered how she could look at him like that, with all the love and concern and understanding born of centuries of companionship, when just hours ago she’d been declaring he’d never loved her. River squeezed his hand between hers.
“Well,” she announced after a moment, “this was wonderful, but I couldn’t eat another bite. Shall we go, darling?”
He could only manage a grateful nod in reply.
With one long last look at the towers, they turned and made their way back to the TARDIS. River, evidently not in quite as much of a hurry as he was, stopped to speak to all the staff they passed on the way, lavishing praise on the meal and thanking them for the special attention they’d been given (as the original benefactors of the establishment, of course— not that he’d mentioned that bit to her yet. He’d get to it eventually.)
She was lovely when she was being kind and gracious, just as she was lovely when she was brandishing a gun at someone, but either way, the Doctor didn’t have the patience for dealing with other people tonight. He wanted her attention all to himself. They were owed a little selfishness, he thought, after all this time. When he placed his hand at her lower back, she took mercy on him again and said her goodbyes to the hostess, letting him steer her into the TARDIS.
The door creaked shut behind them at last, and a tense quiet descended over the room. This was usually the part where they stumbled up to the console between laughter and kisses, argued amiably over the controls as they took off into the vortex or some unoccupied corner of deep space, and he made a show of pretending to complain about her half undressing him before they even made it to the bedroom.
River looked at him, and with his palm resting on her back, he could feel the stiff hesitance in her posture. She was waiting, probably for a sign that he wanted that: to go on as if not a day had passed since they’d last been together. And, god, he’d never wanted anything more in his lives. But there was no pretending he hadn’t heard all the things she’d said today, not now. He was done with taking the easy way out, and it was up to him to put her doubts to rest. But where to even begin?
“So,” she said, flashing him an uncertain, tremulous smile. Always the brave one. “What do you want to…” she trailed off, her shining eyes searching his. Her lips were slightly parted in silent question, and as his gaze settled there, the Doctor decided all at once to throw out the order of priorities. Anyway, he was good at multitasking.
River made a strangled sound in her throat as his lips met hers, surprise trailing into an urgent whimper. They stumbled into the railing, and he pressed up against her, leaving no space between them for her to fill in with doubts of whether he wanted this. She grasped blindly for him, one hand gripping his jacket and the other winding into his hair. They fit together just as perfectly as he’d remembered, but no memory could compare to this. His tongue traced along her upper lip, and she tipped her head back, sighing with pleasure.
The Doctor worried for a moment that his knees would give out at the overwhelming feel of her, solid and warm and so alive, breathing sharply under his shaking hands. His mind clouded with the bright aroma of her perfume, the soft heat of her skin, the lingering trace of champagne sparkling on her tongue. He’d nearly forgotten what it was to love her and to have her. Centuries of grief and longing met with sudden, miraculous relief, and the shocking reality of it was almost more than his nerves could take.
He was shivering, but couldn’t bring himself to care if she noticed. That was really beginning to bother him, though, the more he turned it over in his mind— the noticing. Today’s events notwithstanding, River was far too clever not to have noticed a very long time ago that he was madly in love with her. He hadn’t exactly made a secret of it over the centuries. How, after so much time together, had he managed to fuck up this badly?
“Tell me, wife,” he mumbled in between graceless, needy kisses. “Where did I go wrong?” His hands fell to her waist, tracing up over her sides, the beading on her dress rasping under his fingertips.
“You didn’t, sweetie,” she breathed.
The Doctor huffed in disbelief. “You thought I didn’t love you.” He tried not to wince at the words. No matter how painful it was for him, it was worse for her. “You… think I don’t love you.”
“Oh, anyone can fool a lie detector,” she scoffed. “Don’t you think I accounted for that possibility before planning his murder right under his nose?”
“River, come on. Don’t do that. When you said it, you meant it. You meant it enough.”
“It, it’s not that—” she stammered, but he pressed on, forcing out the most difficult question before he lost the nerve.
“Did you always? Did you really always believe that, our whole life together?”
“Oh, darling, no,” she said, stroking his face. “Of course not.”
“Because— I’m not trying to make excuses, I know I can be rubbish— but I thought I’d been sort of extremely clear on that point? I’m, I’m sure there were a lot of honeymoons, and, uh, some poetry…”
River breathed out a soft laugh, her hand still resting against his cheek, and he leaned into her palm. She had no reason to be looking at him with such affection when he’d clearly been completely inadequate as a husband to her.
“It was just… after Manhattan,” she said, and glanced down, avoiding his eyes. “You were gone, and… after a while, I thought I’d rather pretend it had never been real, than admit I’d lost everything. I knew better. I did,” she insisted, when he frowned at her. “But it was… easier. To run off and get into trouble you wouldn’t approve of, and tell myself you didn’t care anyway.”
The Doctor let out a heavy breath, resting his forehead against hers. “You never lost me, River. You never could. You were always younger, after that. I should have come back for you, looked for you where you are now. But I thought if I did, I wouldn’t be able to hold this off any longer.” He swallowed tightly, choking back tears. “I’m sorry. I… I did ask you to stay.”
“I know.”
“I meant it. I’ve always wanted that.”
“Me too,” she whispered.
“Give me another chance?”
“Always. If that’s still what you want.”
“Wha— of course it is,” the Doctor sputtered, incredulous. “You’re my wife.”
“You do have others.” She made a good show of teasing him, but he knew better now.
“River,” he sighed, “those were weddings, not marriages. Any idiot can stumble into a wedding, but there’s only so many times you can keep coming back and still call it an accident. I think we were well past that number by our wedding night, dear. —Which,” he added as she laughed, smiling up at him through tears, “is also a thing none of the other ones had. I married you on purpose, and I’m going to stay right here with you on purpose, because I love you, and being with you is— it’s all I want. Is that okay?”
He was alarmed for a moment when River choked out a sob, but she was still smiling as she nodded, her tear-streaked cheeks shining. Then she took his face firmly in both hands and kissed him with such frantic passion that his head spun. Or, maybe not just his head. Before he’d quite figured out what was happening, she’d flipped them about so he was pinned against the railing instead.
“Oh,” the Doctor croaked. The sudden jolt of heat tingling through his body as he reflexively gripped her hips was another thing he’d nearly completely forgotten. It would seem he still enjoyed nothing more than River casually demonstrating she could kill him with her little finger, but had decided to do very nice things to him instead. It was just so her. His wife, the obstinate assassin. Not even a lifetime of brainwashing could compel her to do anything she didn’t want to do. Lucky bastard that he was, she’d decided she wanted to love him.
“Know what I said about how everything isn’t sexy?” he muttered. She pulled back just enough to raise an eyebrow at him. “I’m prepared to make an exception.”
River laughed, pleased and warm. “Aren’t you always?”
“Only for you, dear.”
“Mmm, good answer.”
“Bedroom?” he suggested.
“Thought you’d never ask,” she sighed. “But… we should probably park her somewhere other than the restaurant lobby first.”
“Oh, right. Good idea.”
They stumbled to the console between laughter and kisses, and bickered cheerfully over the map of their new home planet on the scanner, before deciding that moving her just outside the restaurant was good enough for now. There’d be plenty of time to settle in wherever they chose later.
“You know,” River said as they turned down the corridor to the bedroom, “since you mentioned it. You did write me the most lovely poetry. I keep them all in my diary. Have you written anything lately?”
“Er, written yes; poetry no.”
“Oh?”
“Electric guitar, mostly.”
“Really!” she exclaimed, delighted. “Now that is definitely sexy.”
“Yeah?” the Doctor asked, a grin spreading over his face.
“Very. What inspired you to take it up?”
“Ah, well, I don’t know,” he said, slipping his arm around her waist. “Guess I’m always thinking of a song.”
A Bit of Clarity 🍂 (12/?) The visions had started last autumn, a year ago now. It had caused a bit of chaos for some, a bit of clarity for others. Two days ago, Clarke Griffin had been perfectly fine managing both her Café and her stress. But now she was curious - so deeply curious about the vision of herself entwined with the aloof Lexa Woods that it was leading her to complete distraction. (ao3)
[part 1] [part 2] [part 3] [part 4] [part 5] [part 6] [part 7] [part 8] [part 9] [part 10] [part 11]
A few minutes before closing time the next day, Clarke was waiting at the end of the counter for surprise customers. Gaia was already wrapping her scarf around her neck and Wells was pulling out ingredients for the next day. He had stayed much later today, going over resumes for their interviews tomorrow, but also reorganizing the kitchen.
After giving Gustus a call to offer him the job, Wells had realized that things would get crowded quite quickly. Gustus was a big man and the kitchen was on the smaller side, but it was workable with a different layout. Clarke thanked her lucky stars for her best friend's ability to adapt to situations, as she herself disliked big changes. Regardless of the possible growing pains ahead, it was an exciting time for the café.
Right after Gaia left with a tired wave, Wells found Clarke absentmindedly drawing the branches of the weeping fig. The last customers had left as well and the sun had already set. The mugs were clean, the plates drying, and the day's crumbs swept from the floor. It hadn't rained at all today; a small mercy given that Clarke couldn't stop thinking about her date with Lexa. She wasn't sure where they were headed, but heavy rain might've halted Lexa's plans and she didn't have the patience to wait another day.
Wells peeked at her drawing pad and sighed. "God, she's a beauty," he said dreamily.
Clarke snorted. His fondness for their Ficus was a running joke between them. "Weirdo."
Wells gave her a tired grin as he buttoned up his wool peacoat. He always looked so sharp in winter wear, whereas Clarke always felt like a bulky bear. She'd dressed up a little today - fitted dark pants and a knitted sweater with a nice scoop neck. Her boots were clean and if her hair's curls had loosened over the day, she had still clearly made an effort to look presentable.
“So, you had your vision," said Wells.
Clarke dropped her pencil. "Wh- I- what?"
"It was a few weeks ago, wasn't it? When you came in looking like you hadn’t slept a wink."
Shame gripped her. "Wells, I-"
“You’re looking more crimson than cranberry juice,” he pointed out with a laugh.
“I’m sorry, I just didn’t know how to bring it up," she said. She'd always felt guilty for keeping it from him, but it wasn't the easiest topic either. "Did Raven tell you?"
"Nah, she even deflected when I wondered aloud. You just started acting weird whenever someone mentioned visions. You hate lying, so I figured you didn't want to be asked if you'd had one."
Clarke closed her notepad. She should have known he'd catch on. "I didn't mean to be secretive. You know I would've told you the minute it happened, it just wasn't… family friendly."
"Yeah, I figured. It's good though? I mean, you're happy, right?"
It was a surprising question, though it shouldn't have been. Clarke hadn't really thought about it. It wasn't something she asked herself or even expected. For so long happiness had just revolved around the café. Finding the right name; the right building; the right theme. She'd judged her days based on their achieved goals and for a while it had been a thrill. And it still was - her work made her proud and it made her happy too - but it wasn't everything. She'd come to face that recently, and though the wake up call had been… unconventional, certainly, she was grateful for it.
"I am. I'm seeing her, actually. The woman from my vision. You'd recognize her - she's a regular."
Wells nodded as if he'd already put two and two together. “At Octavia and Lincoln's party I saw you talking to her. Then it clicked she wrote that article on Finn - I remembered checking her profile on the Gazette when it dropped."
"Yeah, she works there. She's writing a piece on the visions actually."
"So it's getting serious?" He asked hesitantly.
And really, Clarke couldn't fault his curiosity. She'd been so wrapped up in Lexa that she'd neglected their relationship and now he was unsure if he should gently prod or wait.
“It’s new and we’re taking things slow, but yeah, I'm hoping it'll work out. I really like her."
Wells looked over her shoulder toward the entrance and smiled. "Seems like she really likes you too."
Clarke turned around and saw that Lexa had parked her car and was just crossing the street toward the café.
"Are you coming in tomorrow?" He asked her.
Clarke whipped around, her cheeks flushed. "What? Of course I am. Why wouldn't I?"
"Dunno, you tell me." He laughed as he checked for his keys in his pocket. "Gaia and Harper have the early shift, in case you forgot. We just have those three interviews in the afternoon, but you already know that."
"I do know," she replied with a frown. "There's no reason I wouldn't be here earlier. I'm always here. What are you saying?"
He shrugged, entirely too proud of himself, and walked toward the back exit. "No one will fault you if you take a break. Enjoy your date!"
"I will! And I'll see you in the morning!" Clarke replied stubbornly.
"I'm sure you will!" he retorted, still snickering, before closing the door behind him.
A hand touched Clarke's shoulder and she startled.
"Sorry," Lexa said with a gentle smile. She'd put on her black coat today, the top buttons undone to reveal her sweater - a reddish brown this time, perfect for the fall. Her hair was down and her eyeliner perhaps more pronounced than usual. Clarke wondered if she'd applied it in her car. She looked beautiful.
"Hi, baby," she softened, forgetting all about Well's teasing. He didn't know what he was talking about. Tonight was just going to be a nice date. Some food, wine - whatever Lexa had planned. They were still going slow. Clarke didn't have any expectations other than enjoying their time together. She liked their pace. It was… frustrating at times, sure, but it was working. They had both opened up to each other.
"Hi," Lexa whispered before she inched forward so that she could kiss her over the counter. Clarke sighed into it, having imagined such sweetness all day long.
"Am I too early?" Lexa asked. "Do you need help cleaning up?"
Clarke brushed her thumb over Lexa's jaw. "No, I'm done. I just need to grab my coat and close up."
"Was that Wells who went out back?"
"Yes, he was being ridiculous."
"I thought he usually left earlier?"
"He does, but he's been rearranging the kitchen. I think he's worried Gustus will find it too small."
"Gus has an entire farm and acres of land at his disposal, but he sleeps in his shed because it's warm," Lexa said. "He won't mind."
Clarke beamed, delighted to hear it. "I'm going to give you Wells' number and you're going to text him just that. "
While Clarke left to grab her coat, Lexa worried her lip. "Oh but he doesn't really know me…"
"He will."
Clarke came out from the back with her coat and scarf on. She pulled out her set of keys. "He's my best friend and you're my-" she stopped herself. "I think you'd get along great. He loves theater, devours literature, and he already thinks you're amazing for taking Finn down. So don't worry about it."
"Well, that reminds me: Collins went ahead with suing the Gazette."
"Are you fucking kidding me?"
They made their way to the front, where Lexa opened the door for Clarke. "No. It'll never stand, but he aims to waste our time and money."
"Waste of time and money - that's been his motto since birth."
Lexa wrinkled her nose. "Let's talk about something else."
"Please. So where's my carriage?"
Lexa laughed.
* * *
Lexa may not have found a pumpkin to turn into a carriage after all, but her car smelled like apples and she drove so smoothly Clarke could've closed her eyes and imagined they weren't moving at all. She had never thought 'great driver' would do it for her, but here she was eyeing Lexa's hands on the steering wheel and feeling hot.
"How's the writing going?" Clarke asked, clearing her throat when her voice started off slightly rough.
Lexa took a left, which would've surprised Clarke if she'd paid any attention to the road. But all she could think about was Lexa's razor-sharp focus and how she yearned to be the reason for it.
"Good, I finished a first draft. My writing partner is looking at it for now. I need it out of my sight for a few days."
"Partner, huh?"
Lexa smiled as she kept her eyes on the road. "Echo. She wrote most of the FC&B article."
"Did you write for other newspapers before?"
Lexa nodded. "Two. I've been lucky, professionally. Smaller papers have always been more interesting to me, so I stayed away from national ones. I was able to climb the ladder a lot faster than some of my old classmates."
"The Gazette must've been a change of pace. New city, new job - I don't think I could handle it."
"When they hired me I was so happy to be working I just threw myself into it," Lexa admitted. "I got the idea on the Mountain Men soon after, just from reading old archives about them. That kept me busy, so I didn't have time to worry about fitting in. It was nice. Exciting. It felt like falling in love with my job again. Then one day Echo invited me to grab drinks with other colleagues and… I realized things had fallen into place already."
"Costial is pretty magical like that," Clarke said with a smile. She loved it when Lexa talked about her time here. Sometimes it was easy to forget she hadn't even been here a year yet. Clarke remembered her first year in the city - how she'd felt like she'd always belonged here. How she couldn't wait to build her life here. And college had been fun, and sometimes she walked by the campus just for the nostalgia of it, but it was the years after that had really shaped her life into what it was today. There had been many tears and failures before the café, but she'd never once thought of leaving. She hoped Lexa felt the same.
One glance outside the window and Clarke finally had an idea where they were headed. They were quite far from the center of the city now, just a few miles away from Busy Moose Park and its lake on the outskirts. Lexa took the road that led to the park, but she didn't make the turn Clarke had expected and instead continued straight.
"Are we going to the factory?" Clarke asked.
The chocolate factory and its surroundings were certainly a sight to behold, and popular with teens because of its smells and aesthetic quality, but there wasn't much to do unless you brought a picnic. Which was unlikely to be comfortable anyway in this cold.
"Not quite," Lexa answered with a secretive smile.
A few minutes later she finally pulled over into a small parking lot, checking for Clarke's reaction as soon as they got out of the car.
“I know I said I’d take you somewhere more upscale, but I thought you might really like this place."
Because the factory was just a ways down the road and it was windy tonight, the bold smell of chocolate permeated the air. They had stopped in front of a rustic restaurant surrounded by a garden. Small lights glowed softly against the brick walls, complimented by the dancing shadows from a few lanterns. There was a patio with beams covered in twining vines, the plants and wisteria also covering the top like a ceiling. Powerful heaters kept the biting cold at bay, no doubt, making the entire place look like a winter fairytale.
It was the kind of romantic setting Clarke would have made fun of in front of friends while secretly hoping to experience it one day.
“How the hell have I never been here before?” She asked in astonishment.
With a hand on her back, Lexa led her toward the entrance.
“Did you know Icicle? Italian restaurant?”
“Yeah, that rings a bell.”
“This is it. The owner retired and her son took over - revamped the whole place from top to bottom and gave it a mountain lodge theme. He figured they should capitalize on the location more, especially the constant sweetness in the air. It just reopened a few weeks ago. Featured in the Gazette and everything.”
“Oh, that might’ve been when I was a bit angry at you," Clarke remembered and gave Lexa a teasing grin. "Deleted the app like it was some kind of statement."
Lexa scrunched up her nose, not too eager to remember that time. The hostess seated them inside at a secluded table for two. The light was dimmed and there was a candle between them; and even two squares of chocolate wrapped in gold foil.
After they took off their coats and sat, Lexa bit her lip. “It's not too much, is it?"
"Are you kidding? It's gorgeous." Clarke reached for her hand. "You're always surprising me."
A waiter gave them a menu and a basket of bread. They looked like mini baguettes and Clarke was temped to steal one for Wells.
“God, I almost forgot about this smell," she said, taking a deep breath. The chocolate from the factory still wafted faintly in the air, and mixed with the smell of food it had Clarke already salivating for dinner. "In college we used to hang out by the lake a lot. If the wind was on our side we’d always get a whiff from the factory. Not even edibles could beat that.”
Lexa arched a brow. “Edibles, huh?”
“Please, I know you’ve dabbled," Clarke scoffed.
“What makes you think that?”
“You have the vibe.”
“The pothead vibe? I thought I was unreadable.”
“Oh you have that vibe too," Clarke laughed. "But then there’s the tattoos, the plants, the way you write about nature. You’re curious, open minded, andyou went to a liberal arts college. You must’ve tried it at least once. I think that’s how you approach most things: don’t knock ‘till you try it. Am I close?”
Lexa looked away, slightly flummoxed. “It sounds like I’m more of an open book then.”
"Maybe that's a good thing…" Clarke offered with a hopeful smile, thumb caressing the back of her hand.
"Maybe it is," Lexa agreed.
They both picked the apricot glazed chicken with roasted potatoes, pairing it with a white wine. Throughout dinner Clarke felt such pleasant warmth, both because of the wine and Lexa's steady gaze on her. She was relaxed and unfairly charming; a great listener by all accounts, but also coming out of her shell when it came to her own past. Clarke knew it wasn't easy for her, which made it all the more special.
"In retrospect I should've figured politics weren’t for me when I started screaming at my television every time the news came on."
Clarke grinned, knowing the sentiment all too well. "Good thing you don't work for a newspaper or anything…"
Swallowing the last of her wine, Lexa gave her a playful smirk. "Local news. I can take the city hall drama. I actually enjoy it with my morning pastry."
"That I can believe. You always look so deep in thought when you read. Harper dropped a cup once and you didn't even flinch."
"Really?" Lexa asked. "Is there anything else I do that I should know about?"
The waiter stopped by with their desserts: molten chocolate cake for Lexa and a slice of pear tart for Clarke.
"It's not like I stare or anything," Clarke clarified as she grabbed her spoon. "Your seat just happens to be in my vicinity."
"Mm." Lexa smirked. "I guess I just pop up sometimes…" she trailed off, her tone heavy with implication.
She did this occasionally, but more boldly recently. Alluding to Clarke's vision seemed to greatly entertain Lexa.
"Ha, you're funny," Clarke deadpanned.
"Did I also crack jokes while I was kissing you - and I quote - everywhere?" Lexa goaded.
Clarke shrugged as she chewed on her tart. "Actually you were a lot more suave than you are now. Pity."
Lexa laughed. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"Please, you're very proud of yourself. And it's not fair all I have to go on is your distaste for coffee." Clarke remembered how frantic she had been after her vision, her mind firing questions every second. “Did you know I went to a vision reader right after?”
It had been an impulse and she'd regretted it, but she figured Lexa was familiar with them.
"Really?" Lexa asked, surprised.
“Yeah, the one by the market. Becca’s Reading or something. I bailed at the last minute.”
“I actually haven’t spoken to one. I was toying with the idea, but it might be an entirely different article.”
Clarke grimaced. “They’re just opportunistic money grabbers.”
Lexa offered a spoonful of her cake, which Clarke took before plopping a bit of pear on top of it. The warm chocolate melted the pear in her mouth and she sighed at the taste. Lexa smiled.
“It’s a different point of view. Besides, listening to so many stories might’ve given them some valuable insight even if they opened a shop for the wrong reasons. If my job’s taught me anything it’s to not judge a book by its cover.”
"Hmm you're good at it - your job. And I'm not just saying that because you're wining and dining me."
Lexa looked bashful. "You know, I remember when you yelled at me to get over myself."
"Not our finest moment…"
"No," Lexa agreed. "But it was needed. Before that there was so much I wanted to tell you, but… couldn't."
"I know." Clarke remembered that feeling as well. After the vision she'd look at Lexa and be so certain there was so much left unsaid between them, yet neither of them knew where to start, or if it was reciprocated. "I should've let you interview me - just ripped off the Band-Aid. It would've explained a lot."
"I would've never made it past the first question," Lexa said. "Can you share what you saw, Clarke?"
Clarke smiled cheekily around a mouthful of her tart. "Well, I would hope that kind of confession would score me a date at least."
"Oh I would have asked you out on the spot," Lexa replied with a smirk.
Clarke gasped. "How very unprofessional of you."
"If you hadn't noticed, my professionalism hangs by a thread whenever I'm near you."
Clarke let out a small laugh. "Well, that's one thing I'm glad for."
* * *
After their dinner, Lexa suggested they walk in the park before it closed. It was cold but their coats were thick and the wind was minimal. Clarke had no desire to part just yet, and so took Lexa's hand in hers as soon as they left the car by the park's entrance.
They had a little less than thirty minutes before it closed, but enjoyed every second as they strolled by the lake. The half-moon was reflected on the quiet surface, and though there were a few other people, Clarke felt like they had just stepped into a world of their own.
Clarke nudged Lexa toward one of the Beech trees, its autumn leaves still clinging bravely to its thick branches. They settled beneath it, lying down on the soft ground where leaves piled atop the grass. Between the branches they could see some stars, and Clarke wondered if maybe the park could close and leave them be. There was nowhere else she wanted to be.
She heard some rustling and then saw Lexa look down at her, her face framed by her wavy hair and the stars above. She took Clarke's breath away.
"You're so beautiful," Lexa murmured, struck by a similar thought it seemed. "You have the kindest eyes and the warmest smile. It's the first thing I ever noticed about you."
Clarke reached up to kiss her, parting only when she felt Lexa's hand on her stomach. Even atop her coat and thick clothing, she could feel its warmth.
"I think you're drunk on wine and chocolate."
"Then you'll be relived to hear I'm a very sincere drunk."
Clarke giggled, which made Lexa's smile stretch in such a fond way. She pressed closer to her, the tip of her nose brushing against her neck. She kissed the small spot, as if to apologize for her cold nose.
"I wonder so much about you, Clarke."
Clarke hummed. "What do you wonder about?"
“I’ve spoken with a lot of people. Heard the visions about reuniting with loved ones, getting over addictions, graduating. There’s been some romance of course,” Lexa said. “Aden’s first kiss, though he couldn’t see his boyfriend’s face. Echo celebrating a wedding anniversary with her husband. But so few - even online in anonymous circles - so few like yours.”
Now Clarke felt warm again, mostly from the blush on her cheeks. “I don’t believe that.”
Lexa lifted her head from her shoulder. “Have you personally heard of any?”
“Raven saw Wells naked.”
“You know that’s not what I mean.”
“Okay, so I'm a pervert, what can I say?”
“No,” Lexa replied, tickled by Clarke's little huff. “You’re a mystery. You intrigue me.”
Clarke cleared her throat. “Well I’ve had a bit of a dry spell. I had flings, but… I didn't allow myself anything more. The café was taking up all my thoughts and for a while it worked for me. Then the days got long again, and lonelier… Raven said it was probably just my body wanting me to snap out of it.”
“And what do you think?”
Clarke did wonder about it then, or at least differently than she had in the past. It wasn't so long ago she'd asked these questions herself. She'd been so frustrated she couldn't discuss them with the person she'd shared it with, and here she was, lying right next to her in a bed of leaves.
She touched Lexa's hand on her stomach, lacing and unlacing their fingers, gently playing with them as she tried to make sense of everything.
“Have you never fantasized about a stranger?" She asked quietly, catching Lexa's eyes. "Someone who knows nothing about you and yet knows exactly how to make your body soar?"
“That’s not what you saw though, is it?” Lexa murmured. “I wasn’t a stranger in your bed. I knew you and you knew me."
Clarke felt her heart beat faster. She wanted so badly to kiss Lexa again; to feel her body against hers like the night on her couch.
"Lex…"
Their lips were just a hair's breadth apart now. To anyone else, they would've looked like they were kissing.
"How was it different, Clarke?"
Clarke swallowed, trying to find the words. “How? The way you handled me - needy and possessive, but tender and attentive too. Like you were in charge of my pleasure and you had to remind me."
She saw Lexa swallow and so continued, eager to share everything this time: "You said my name and it almost sounded like a prayer - like you couldn’t believe we were together. I never heard my name like that before. I never thought I could make someone feel lucky."
"God, Clarke, you have no idea." Lexa exhaled before closing the gap and kissing her. It wasn't like any other kiss they'd shared tonight. It felt like a promise, almost. Lexa tasted so sweet on her tongue and Clarke could only wonder if all of her was just as heavenly.
She cupped the back of her neck and felt herself throb with desire, her mind filled with both the reality of Lexa and the last of her vision.
"I can even remember the smell of us," Clarke sighed between kisses. "How sticky my skin felt, like we'd been in bed for hours."
"Clarke - fuck."
Clarke pushed Lexa on her back and cupped her cheeks, claiming her lips quite quickly again. She licked into her mouth and moaned at the silky feel of Lexa's tongue.
"Sometimes I'd try to picture us again but you'd disappear," Clarke continued, eyes closing when Lexa started kissing down her neck. "I wasn't sure if it was you anymore. But then you'd come back. I'd feel your hands, your mouth on me… lower, and lower…"
Lexa let out a groan and pinched the bridge of her nose before falling back on the ground, the leaves rustling beneath her. Something in the way she set her jaw made Clarke frown.
"Baby…" she said, tracing a finger over her cheekbone.
"Did you call her that?" Lexa asked without thinking.
Clarke retracted her hand and paused. A grin spread on her face. “What? Are you jealous… of yourself?”
Lexa glared petulantly. “No.”
“You are."
Lexa remained quiet, so after a moment Clarke poked her arm. “Well what about yours?”
"Mine?"
"I wasn't even in it - how do you think that makes me feel?"
Lexa shook her head. "You were in it."
"You said you were just standing in a random kitchen making coffee."
"Yes."
"So?"
They heard the echo of a bicycle's bell on the pathway and turned to the sound, but the couple soon rode away. Clarke looked at Lexa again, finding her staring at the sky.
“What are you keeping from me?”
A small smile grew on Lexa's face - but she remained tightlipped.
"How was I there?" Clarke asked again, deeply curious.
"The doodles," Lexa simply replied.
Clarke remembered that she'd found that to be a strange detail before. She didn't put up her doodles on walls and she didn't frame them. These had to be important. Something that made her identity unmistakable in Lexa's eyes. Sure it could be that her style was recognizable, but Lexa made it sound as if it was something else.
“Lex…"
She lifted Lexa's chin to catch her gaze.
“If I tell you, I worry it might not happen," Lexa admitted.
Clarke bit her lip, finally understanding. It was almost like saying a wish out loud - fearing it might not come true if you broke that single rule.
“You want it to happen?” She asked instead.
A breeze passed as Lexa looked at her intently, leaving no room for doubt. “Yes.”
There was no waver in her voice. Not even an ounce of hesitation. The sheer confidence set Clarke alight. She’d forgotten how it felt to feel so wanted. Whatever it was in that frame… Lexa clearly hoped for it in their future. The fact that she wanted it with her, and no one else, made her desire swell.
She leaned down and kissed her right against the grass and by the slumbering tree, forgetting all about the doodles. Lexa believed it was her - that was all that mattered. After weeks of being unsure of where they stood, if her feelings were even shared, she didn't need anything more.
Lexa wound her arm around her waist, her mouth still as hungry against Clarke's. When they pulled away, she pressed their foreheads together.
“I wish I could see us like you did," she murmured wistfully.
"What would it change?"
“Maybe… maybe if I knew I was good enough for you… If I was sure that I wouldn’t- that I wouldn’t hurt you-"
Clarke shook her head. "Don’t fill your head with thoughts like that. Let's just be here, together, and worry about the rest when it comes. I know it's hard for you, but this - us - right now… it's good, isn't it?"
Lexa nodded. "It's the best thing that's happened to me in a long time."
Relieved, Clarke tucked her head beneath Lexa's chin. "Then just be with me. You can be happy, baby. You have a right to it. Don't let anyone or anything tell you otherwise."
Eventually they made their way back to Lexa's car, neither of them interested in picking up their leisurely pace.
"I'm sorry we ended up walking so much," Lexa said.
"You fed me beforehand, so it's forgiven."
Lexa smiled. "Good to know."
Before they reached the parking lot, Clarke decided to ask what had been on her mind: "I know you said Costial feels like home to you; that you found your place here, but… do you see your future here? Because this is it for me. And I'm… I like you, Lex. I like you a lot. I don't want to be an interlude. I don't think I could take it."
"Clarke," Lexa stepped closer to her. "You're not an interlude, you're - God, you've been in every act of my life here. I don't want to go anywhere. I- I want to be with you. That's what I know for certain. Is that alright for now?"
"It is."
Lexa kissed her softly and then smirked. "I may not have had erotic visions of myself entwined with a hot local, but I still want to stay here."
Clarke shoved her playfully. "I don't even like you anymore."
They laughed the whole way to the car.
* * *
It seemed like a tradition already; Lexa walking her to her door while Clarke racked her mind for a way to linger. When they finally arrived she leaned against her door and sighed.
"Tonight was amazing."
Lexa hummed. "I'm glad."
"I'm definitely taking you out this weekend," Clarke said.
"You are?" Lexa asked, tilting her head to kiss her again.
Clarke closed the gap as she wrapped her arms around her neck. The kiss was slow; amatory, but as always it could not go on for too long before hands wandered.
"I hope you have sweet dreams," Lexa said, her eyes hooded and her lips slightly redder.
"Oh I will."
Lexa glanced at her mouth. "If I pay you a visit again maybe you could keep a journal close by. I'd love some notes on my performance."
Clarke rolled her eyes. "Remind me why I ever told you?"
"What? That we lasted hours?" Lexa husked.
Right. Clarke narrowed her eyes and let her hands slowly drag down Lexa's arms. Now, Clarke wasn't innocent. She knew fully what made her look good, even when her coat was buttoned up. She had let Lexa tease her and goad her about the vision all night, and she had kept her retort to herself. But no more.
She pressed her body closer to Lexa's, unmistakably provocative with the way their breasts touched.
“Make fun all you want, Lexa, but remember this: I’ve seen all of you while you haven’t seen an inch of me.” She felt Lexa’s hand tighten on her waist. “I’ve felt your body against mine. Your mouth on my thighs. I’ve felt your tongue inside me.” She glanced down at Lexa's lips and then back up, proud of the gobsmacked look on her face. “So you can tease me. You can push my buttons. I can take it. But you? You only have your imagination." She stepped back and gave her sultriest smile, "And trust me, it’s got nothing on reality.”
She turned around and quickly unlocked her door, then looked over her shoulder. "Thanks for the date, baby."
As soon as she stepped inside and closed the door behind her, Clarke knew she'd just played a dirty hand. But Lexa had teased her at all night and all was fair in lust.
With a wicked grin, too pleased by the night's events, Clarke took off her coat and slipped out of her shoes and socks. And because she just couldn't resist one last look, she walked to her window and waited. Finally she saw Lexa walk out of the building. She seemed unfocused, going right and then left, forgetting where she'd parked.
But then she stopped and turned around.
Clarke's smile fell. Just watching Lexa like this, seeing the effect she had on her… it changed something. She had closed the door in the spur of the moment - because they were good at testing each other. Because she had thought tonight should end there, on another game of theirs.
But she didn’t want to play anymore.
And maybe Lexa realized it too. She looked up and found her apartment's window.
Their eyes met.
Clarke reached out for the curtain, gripping it so tight her knuckles went white. She couldn't look away from those eyes in the moonlight if she tried. Even if the ground started shaking beneath their feet.
"Lexa-" she started before stopping herself. It had to be Lexa's decision. Clarke had already made hers. She couldn't call out to her. Not for this. Lexa had to choose.
Clarke held her breath, unsure she'd even be able to leave this spot if Lexa did walk away after all. Until-
Lexa bolted back toward the building.
Clarke watched her disappear from view and then heard her intercom. She rushed toward it and pressed the buzzer, her heart in her throat. Still barefoot, she pulled the door open and waited. Footsteps thundered up the flights of stairs, closer and closer.
Tonight had not ended. Not yet.
When the Time is Right
Summary: Is it time to take your relationship to the next level? Set at the start of S18 - roughly August 2016. Pairing: Sonny x Reader Warnings: Mature themes...of the NSFW variety, some cussing, fluff, feels, etc. Words: 1927 AO3 here
Technically part 12 in the Changes verse, but can act as a stand-alone.
Consider this a Valentine’s day themed thingy even though it’s set in August 🥰
"It's weird I guess," you say in between sips of tea, "how some parts of our relationship have happened so quickly, like meeting his parents right away, while other parts of it aren't rushed at all. For instance, the two of us were complete idiots and it took a couple of months to formally say ‘I love you’." The admission makes you chuckle, but as you look up from your drink, the devious grin pasted across your friend’s face tells you that she’s hung up on one small detail.
"You guys haven't done it yet, have you?" blurts Sydney, sitting wide-eyed across from you on her sofa.
You're normally a pretty private person so you can't help it when your cheeks start to burn, effectively giving away your secret.
"You haven't!" she exclaims, eagerly setting down her teacup, ready for details.
"Syd!"
The blonde raises her arms in mock defense. "Hey, hey! There's nothing wrong with it but it's kind of a rarity to not be in each other's pants by now!"
You grow even more self-conscious, tracing the rim of your mug handle as a distraction.
"Listen,” Sydney begins sternly, “he's super nice to you and charming and sweet, so I just wanna make sure he's not -"
But you interrupt her before she can make the accusation. "Sonny isn't like that," you state, adopting a firm tone of your own. "We just haven't gotten there yet...there's been no rush. I feel totally comfortable around Sonny and he's never once made me feel like we should be doing anything."
"Good," she asserts. "I just want to make sure you're not being played because the good ones are really hard to find."
Ever since you met in college, Sydney has been fiercely protective of you, and clearly that side of her is something that's never changed. Despite her thirst for details, you also know that you can truly trust her so you suppose there's no harm in opening up a little. "I mean, it's not like I haven't thought about it,” you confess sheepishly. “I went on the pill not long after we started dating because you never know, but our lives have been so busy and messy. Especially this summer. We've had our ups and downs - some beyond our control and some were issues that we've worked out together. I really feel like we've come out of it stronger and the more we experience together, the more I’m certain that Sonny is the person I want to spend the rest of my life with."
Sydney cracks a goofy smile.
"Yeah, yeah. Corny. I know," you wave dismissively, "but I can't help loving him more and more each day. Our relationship is so special to me and personally, sex is one of the most intimate things a couple can do. It's about love. So, waiting for the right time isn't a big deal. If anything, it will just bring us that much closer."
"Girl, you're crazy lucky!” chimes Sydney, affectionately. "And there's nothing wrong with waiting to bang. You remember me from back in the day and how I had my fair share of ‘promiscuous encounters’. Actually, with Geoff..." Sydney's eyes narrow as she recollects her ex, "fuck, do I wish we had waited! He said all the right things and made all the right gestures. Our relationship moved so fast! We hit the milestones at a hundred miles per hour…and I believed it! But then the cheating started. When I found out - and I still feel this way sometimes - when I think about having slept with him, I feel so dirty and cheap." She ducks her head and you can tell that the wound still smarts.
"You can't blame yourself for his behavior!" you rationalize, wishing your friend wouldn't be so hard on herself.
"I know! And I don't, but it's that shame and embarrassment of knowing I was so foolish to believe there was love there. Even the thought of having given myself over to him in that way makes me wanna upchuck. Hell, those one-night stands where the guy dips out as soon as he finishes don't feel as cheap or degrading. So, hon, there's nothing wrong with the pace you're moving at. Believe me. Maybe if I had waited longer with Geoff, his true colours would have shone through earlier..."
"It's in the past, Syd," you reason, "and you know what is special about that? It goes to show you how much you can trust and love someone. And even though Geoff was a total asshole, there's gonna be a guy out there for you someday who will be worthy of all that."
Sydney smiles despite herself. "You're a total sap, you know that, right?" You grin at her and nod proudly. "But I love ya for it." She then leans across the sofa and gives you a grateful hug. Parting, Sydney continues. "You'll know when the time is right," she reassures you. "You may talk about it or it may just happen, but you and Sonny are the mushiest, most in-love couple I've ever seen, so I know you'll be just fine."
-x-
Nights in with Sonny are the best. Lately you both had been so busy. Sonny was working overtime on top of double shifts, while you were occupied with perfecting your new course curriculum before the semester started.
When the two of you were finally able to have an evening off, you'd find something to eat and just lounge on the couch; maybe pop in a movie and sit snuggled up together. You didn't need to be doing anything in particular to enjoy each other's company.
Sometimes though, those cozy moments strayed towards other forms of physical affection. To put it in simple terms: you’d make out…And tonight happened to be no different.
"This movie's dumb," grumbles Sonny, leaning his head on the back of the sofa.
"Yep," you agree, staring blankly at the tv screen.
Sonny then turns his face towards you, offering a cheeky grin. "At least tha company's good."
You flop yours in his direction. "I suppoooose so," you tease with a roll of your eyes.
Sonny pouts and you laugh at how ridiculous he looks. When his put-on expression doesn't crack, you decide it's time to steer the evening towards a more preferable form of entertainment. "Y'know, if you don't stop making that face, I'm gonna have to wipe it off you myself." There's a deliberate hint of suggestion in your voice and you bite your lip to make your intentions crystal clear.
With a gleam in his eye, Sonny playfully deepens the curl of his frown which obviously leaves you with no choice but to reach out, nab his jaw and pull him to your lips. His arm encircles you and his hand presses against your back to coax you near. The quick peck blossoms into several more deep and passionate kisses; the two of you barely able to spare a breath in between.
As things continue to heat up you climb over and straddle Sonny’s lap. To your delight, this move elicits an 'Mmm!' of pleasant surprise from the Italian detective’s throat. Your hair falls over your shoulder as you peer down into his swirling blue eyes. "Hi," you grin quietly.
Sonny stares up at you in wonder. His hands fix themselves to the small of your waist. "Hey," he returns softly as the corners of his mouth cradle a gentle smile.
You hold his gaze a moment longer, soaking in the view. You're still in awe that the man before you is all yours, but as you lean down to capture his lips, you're reassured of your reality. Sonny mirrors your every move, matching your passion. The kisses grow even more heated. Your fingertips work at his silver temples while Sonny's hands burn up your skin where they've snuck themselves beneath your shirt. A gentle but firm squeeze is all it takes for your hips to involuntarily grind down against his.
Suddenly, Sonny raises your bum off of his lap. "What's wrong?" you ask with worry.
He shuts his eyes reluctantly before opening them to you, brow furrowed and expression vulnerable. "It's just...well, if we keep this up..." He winces and his cheeks turn pink.
You shift your knees on the sofa to steady yourself and raise your own eyebrows in understanding. "Oh," you say, growing quiet and nervous. The two of you never did get around to a discussion on taking things further, which left you to wonder where Sonny stood on the matter.
Ever the gentleman, he delicately tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear, "I just don't know if we're ready for...this."
"Babe," you sit back on his thighs, rubbing your palms soothingly along his shoulders. "Do you want to wait? I know your beliefs are a little firmer than mine."
"Nuh-no! It's not that!" he exclaims. "I just don't wanna move too fast for you!" Sonny too, turns timid as he speaks.
You can't help but smile down at him. What had you done to deserve such a sweetheart? You recall the conversation with Sydney from a couple weeks ago. She was right.
"I believe in love," you breathe, running your thumb tenderly along his cheek, "and I love you more than anything."
"I love you too, doll," echoes Sonny, the confidence returning to his voice.
You kiss him again. It's long and lingering, reigniting the flame between you. Sonny draws you to his chest and you link your arms behind his neck. "I want this, if you do," you speak in a soft voice.
"I want this too. I want you...so much." The reply is almost a whisper, his lips mere inches from your own.
Emboldened, you withdraw and stand up, your skin tingling where his fingers brush along your waist. Never breaking eye contact, you reach out your hand. Sonny accepts and you lead him to the bedroom.
-x-
The next morning you awake to orange licks of early sunlight flickering through the blinds. Sonny's arm surrounds you, clutching you to his bare chest. His heavy breathing sounds beside your ear and you think it impossible for life to be any more perfect. You snuggle your naked form closer into his, wishing to stay in his warm embrace forever.
Then Sonny begins to stir. "Mornin' beautiful," he says, Staten Island accent heavy with sleep.
"Morning," you turn over in his arms to place a kiss at the corner of his mouth.
He releases you, propping his head up on an elbow. "Last night was..."
"Wow," you finish with a flirtatious grin.
Sonny sighs dreamily, "yeah." He then takes a finger and beings tracing light circles over your exposed shoulder. "Kinda wish we'd done that sooner." His tone is husky but his eyes are filled with affection.
"We've got our whole lives ahead of us, Sonny," you offer before delicately sweeping a piece of his hair away from his forehead.
You watch his blue eyes soften and crinkle at the corners. Dimples form from his smile. But instead of answering, he simply leans forward and kisses you.
Last night wasn't just physical; you found a whole new connection with Sonny. One deeply rooted in attraction but brought to life and nurtured by love. It was like you were completely in synch, giving and taking from one another wholly and completely. And, as you once again melt into his kiss, you know that everything had worked out just as it was meant to be.
---
Part 13 here!
A/N: I really love this fic. I've had it in my drafts for a long time and I really wanted to find the perfect place to add it into the series. I'm no expert but it kind of ticks me off how the media portrays physical relationships to be the holy grail...like it's a make or break type thing or that people need to be physical to fall in love. So, I tend to gravitate towards character-couples who do the opposite...and to me, Sonny seems like the type who values an emotional connection over a purely physical one. Anyway, I really hope you enjoyed reading this fic! The last paragraph is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written!
Never Noticed
Elijah Mikaelson X Reader
Word Count: 2127
Requested: Anon
Request: You like Elijah but you don’t notice until people, the Mikaelson’s tell you but you think they’re wrong until one night you almost lose him and you realize your heart stopped like different kind of fear than it would of been for a friendship then you end up admitting to yourself they were right . One shot with originals and she is human.
You had been friends with the Mikaelson's since they appeared in Mystic Falls, you were from a family of hunters but you kept yourself away from the supernaturals of Mystic Falls unless they intended to hurt someone innocent, that was how you found out the Caroline was a vampire, you were at the carnival when she attacked someone and you managed to save the guy and hold her off until Stephan and Elena got there and took her away. They had tried to get you to help them but you refused to get mixed up in their drama, you had a way that you liked to fight and that was what you were sticking to when Elijah showed up for the first time you knew where he was but you didn't do much past that. Elijah was the one that came to find you, he knew of your family and heard that some of you were in Mystic Falls. "May I sit?" He asked as you stood in front of your table in a small cafe. "Do I know you?" You asked. "Not personally, my name is Elijah Mikaelson." He introduced himself and you nodded towards the chair allowing him to sit in front of you. "Is there something that I can do for you?" You asked. "I need your help." He explained and you looked at him and frowned. "I intend to stop my brother from breaking his werewolf curse and you seem to be one of my best options." "Why would you think that? You don't even know me." You said as you took a sip of your drink. "I know your family, I've met other members of your family and they have been some of my most reliable allies." He explained and you looked at him and smiled. "My grandfather spoke about you, the only supernatural friend that he made, he saved a lot of people supernatural and human but you were the only person that he claimed a friend." You said, "that is the only reason that I will help you." "Thank you." He smiled. "And if your involving the school kids this will only become more difficult." You said as he stood from his seat. "I have no choice Elena is the one that my brother is after." Elijah shrugged and you looked at him sighed. "Guess there's no other option." You agreed.
Now all in all your plan failed and Klaus did break his curse so you spent a good portion of your time making sure that his newly turned Hybrids didn't go around killing everyone that they crossed paths with and one day Klaus was around when you sent one of his Hybrids packing. "You're the one that helped my brother," Klaus smirked as he leant against the wall of the alleyway. "Are you here to kill me for it?" You asked and he shook his head. "Now where's the fun in that? You're not even scared." He laughed as he stepped forward. "Well many others have threatened to kill me." You shrugged. "Mmm." He hummed. "Where is your brother anyway?" You asked, "He just disappeared." "You think I have something to do with that?" He asked. "I do." You nodded "You know you have a tendency to put your siblings in a box when they disappoint you." "How do you know that?" He asked. "Well, your family history is part of mine." You explained. "My family hunt those who hurt the innocent and while they haven't been able to kill any of you, they've done well to track you through history and steer you away from too much trouble. They've even fought your father to keep him away from you." Klaus' hand latched around your throat. "Careful with your next words hunter." He warned and you took the stake from under your shirt and stabbed him in the shoulder. "Don't threaten me." You warned as you walked away.
The next time that you heard from the Mikaelsons was when they were holding a ball, you had an invite through the post and while you were going to ignore it when you saw the handwritten message on the back from Elijah you hadn't heard from him in a long time and it was clear that Klaus was finally letting him out of the box, so you went you walked into the ball expecting to keep an eye on everyone from the sidelines but Elijah must have seen you the moment that you walked in "You came." He smiled as he put out his arm for you. "I did, I mean you asked me to." You said softly. "I wasn't sure that you would come." He answered honestly. "Well I mean you disappeared off the face of the earth." You shrugged. "I at least wanted an answer for that." "My brother was to blame for my absence." He admitted and you nodded. "I thought as much, said so too, ended up with his hands around my throat." You explained and he frowned. "Are you okay?" He asked. "Of course." You answered as you walked towards the bar. "So you're the one that managed to capture my brother Elijah's attention." You looked up at a beautiful blonde. "I'm Rebekah." "Nice to meet you." You smiled.
From then on you became good friends with Rebekah and while you and Klaus never saw eye to eye, he didn't try to kill you and you didn't try to kill him. You were sitting in The Grill watching Klaus and Kol across the bar, Elijah had asked you to keep an eye on his brothers while he tried to figure out what had happened the night of the ball. You watched as Klaus left with Caroline and Damon and Alaric followed Kol out, you followed after them figuring that they were distracting Klaus with Caroline. Matt was the one who had the stake when you got out there and you easily wrestled it from him and kicked him away "Wow you guys are really desperate aren't you?" You asked as you handed the stake to Kol. "What are you doing?" Damon asked as Alaric helped Matt up. "I thought you were a hunter." "I am." You answered as you crossed your arms "I just like the Mikaelsons way better than I like you." "What is going on?" Kol asked and you looked at him. "Get Klaus and then find Elijah." You ordered, Damon looked like he was ready to stop him but you threw the state strapped to your arm at his shoulder, he caught it but that gave Kol the window he needed to get to Klaus.
For the next couple of months you talked a lot with Rebekah and occasionally run into Klaus but it seemed that Elijah was ignoring you and no one knew where he was for you to be able to ask him yourself so you distracted yourself, Rebekah said that she wanted the cure so that she could be human and you promised to help her find it and then teach her the human ways to protect herself. You promised that she would always have a friend in you no matter what she was, so you were stuck in a car with Rebekah and an emotionless Elena as you drove through the country trying to find Katherine who had taken the cure from the tomb. You found her in a cafe and you sat next to Elena while Rebekah sat down next to Kathrine. After interrogating Kathrine, you and Elena went to meet her friend, you hid but then Elijah appeared. The reason that he wasn't answering your calls was because he was running around with Katherine, you walked over to them as he grabbed Elena "Elijah nice to know that you're alive but I'm going to need you to let go of her." You mumbled as you leant against the pillar of the canopy. "(Y/N) what are you doing here?" He asked. "Helping your sister." You answered. "I don't understand." He frowned. "You would if you picked up the phone." You muttered "but you should know that you girlfriend killed her brother and the only reason that I came after her with the other two was because she killed someone innocent." "(Y/N)-" "No it's fine I need to get back to Mystic Falls anyway." You mumbled before you left. When you got back to the cafe you saw that Stefan and Damon were there "Rebekah give me the keys to the car." "Elijah he's here." Rebekah said. "Oh I know and I'm done here. I'm sure three of you can deal with Katherine." You said as you held your hand out. "What's wrong?" Rebekah asked as she followed you out. "Your brother hasn't spoken to me in months and then I find out that this is why... I don't even know why I care but I really need to leave so please can I have the keys." You pleaded. "You care because you like him." Rebekah smiled. "Please, the keys." Rebekah sighed before handing them to you and walking back into the cafe as you made your way home.
You ignored Elijah's calls after that instead Rebekah was the one that called you "Elijah stopped answering my calls." She said. "I care why? He's done this before maybe he's just found a new brunette to keep his fancy." You asked. "I know you're angry but he could be in trouble. The last time that he talked to me he was with Nik." Rebekah explained. "You lucky I know how dangerous your other brother is." You grumbled as you got out of bed "pick me up in half an hour." Upon arriving at New Orleans it was clear that Klaus had done something and while he and Rebekah argued you looked around the house."He's not here Bex!" "You brought Elijah's newest love interest." Klaus smirked. "Where is he Klaus?" You asked, he just shrugged. "Alright so the lat time this happened he had a dagger in his chest and I assume you've done the same this time, the question is where are you storing him because he's not here." "Smart girl." Klaus complimented. "We'll find him." Rebekah warned. "I'm sure you will sister." Klaus nodded.
After finding out that Klaus had given Elijah over to a very powerful witch and being put on the back burner, you were tasked with looking after Hayley while the others worked on getting Elijah back. It seemed that they were close to getting him back "You knew Elijah before?" Hayley asked as you sat with your feet up on the coffee table in the living room. "You could say that." You confirmed as you looked at her, she was leaning against the doorframe of the living room before she decided to sit down. "Did you guys have a fight?" She asked. "Yes, well no, I was hurt about something but I guess there was no reason for it." You answered as you picked at your fingers. "Rebekah said that you liked him." Hayley smiled. "He was trying to call you but you weren't answering." "Mmm." You hummed before closing your eyes. "What happens if we can't get him back?" She asked. You didn't realise it but you didn't like the idea of never being able to see Elijah ever again, yes you were angry but that didn't mean that you never wanted to see him again or wished him dead.
They got Elijah back after a few days and you had taken to avoiding him based on your new feelings but it wasn't long before he cornered you "It would seem that you are still angry about Katherine." He said and you looked at him. "I'm not angry about Katherine, what you do in your spare time is your business." You answered as you attempted to walk away. "I admit that I should have called but I wasn't thinking." He answered and you nodded. "That's obvious." You said more to yourself and he pulled you back to him. "And you claim that you're not angry." He smirked and you attempted to turn away from him again but guided your face back to his. "I had time to think when you stopped answering my calls and I noticed that I found myself wishing that I would see your name." "What are you saying?" You asked. "That I would really like to kiss you because given the current circumstances we don't have time for the date." Elijah said softly and you giggled softly before pressing your lips to his in a shy kiss, Elijah pushed himself forward and connected your lips in a fuller more passionate kiss that you found yourself lost in.
“Trusting desire -- starting to learn -- Walking through fire without a burn! Clinging a shoulder, a leap begins: Stinging and older, asleep on pins --
So here we go...”
~“I Should Tell You,” from RENT
x~x~x~x
Erik Apollo had never seen his guardian Carewyn Cromwell more scared than the night a rogue swarm of dementors descended on their neighborhood and she rushed home to find Orion protecting Erik with his Abraxan Winged Horse Patronus. He would also never see her quite that scared again, for the rest of his life.
Once Orion and Carewyn had walked Erik back home, Carewyn immediately rushed around, gathering blankets and bundling Erik up in something like a blanket burrito, and then steered him into bed while she made him some hot chocolate. While Carewyn rushed around, Orion quietly sat at the foot of Erik’s bed and gently encouraged him to take slow, deep breaths. Even though the nearly-thirteen-year-old wizard really wasn’t the sort to meditate, Orion was patient, and he eventually wore the boy down enough to steady his breathing by the time Carewyn arrived with the hot chocolate. Orion then got up and headed to the living room so he could leave the two alone to talk.
Erik slowly lifted the mug up to his lips and took a sip. His light blue eyes hadn’t met either Orion’s or Carewyn’s gaze once since they walked him home, but the hot chocolate did seem to bring some of the color back to his freckled cheeks.
“Better?” asked Carewyn.
“Mm-hmm.”
“Good. Make sure you drink all of it -- chocolate is a good antidote, when dealing with dementors...”
Erik bowed his head and didn’t answer. Carewyn tilted her head slightly to the side, trying to read his emotions. She could sense discomfort -- shame.
“Erik,” she said slowly, “I’m proud of you, for having wanted to help. It was good of you to want to protect the Muggles who live on our street. But dementors aren’t something you can fight back with first-year spells -- ”
“I had to do something,” snapped Erik.
“I understand that -- ”
“No, you don’t understand! I had to make them go away! I couldn’t just stay locked up in here, listening to that toad Umbridge and Rowle and -- and -- ”
Erik choked on his words. Despite the anger in his voice, it was clear to Carewyn that it was an expression of hurt more than anything -- like a snake biting someone after being stepped on.
Carewyn’s eyes softened with sad understanding. “...They made you remember your mother.”
Erik bowed his head again, shutting his eyes tight to try to obscure the pain in his features. Her red lips coming together solemnly, Carewyn reached out a hand to trail it through Erik’s blond bangs gently. Despite how prickly he was, Erik didn’t pull away.
“How could the Minister just let them loose?” he whispered bitterly.
“He didn’t have much choice,” said Carewyn. “Minister Shacklebolt didn’t want them as the guards of Azkaban any longer...and I agree with him, they shouldn’t be there. But the dementors were positioned at Azkaban for a reason, however shaky it was. The Ministry thought to give them a purpose and food source that would keep them contained somewhere far away from both Muggles and wizards alike. So now that that’s off the table, we’re right back where we were three hundred years ago, trying to figure out what to do with them.”
Erik’s light blue eyes flared with hatred. “Wipe out the lot of them -- that’s what they should do.”
Carewyn sighed. “Easier said than done, I’m afraid. Drink up, now -- don’t let it get cold.”
Erik did as he was told and took another long sip. Carewyn considered her ward for a moment before speaking again.
“I’ll have to send an owl into the office...but I’ll be working from home for the next week or so. Until the Dark wizard that released those dementors is caught...I don’t think it’s safe if you’re here on your own.”
She offered her best attempt at a smile.
“...Fortunately, since Christmas is on the way, that means we’ll be able to have some fun celebrating it around my case work. Did you have anything special you wanted to do this Christmas? Any traditions?”
Erik shrugged. “Not really...”
“Well, at the very least, we can go to Diagon Alley and do some shopping together.”
“Must we?”
Carewyn bit her lip to hold in a laugh. Erik grinned mischievously despite himself as he finished his hot chocolate.
“...Ms. Cromwell?”
“Yes, Erik?”
“Those things you and Amari cast...the winged horses made of light...what kind of spell was that?”
The memory of Orion’s and her matching Patronuses once again made Carewyn’s heart swell in her chest.
“...It’s called a Patronus Charm. It’s a magical shield created by a powerful, happy memory, which takes the form of a different creature, depending on the person who casts it. It’s not an easy spell to cast, but it’s the one sure-fire defense against a dementor -- because it doesn’t have any sorrow or pain that a dementor can feed on.”
Erik frowned. “So Patronuses can look like other things?”
“Yes. Sometimes they look like magical creatures, but more often, they take the shape of an animal that reflects something about the spell’s caster. Wendy’s is a unicorn and Jacob’s is a hippogriff, for example...but Jae’s is a fox and Talbott’s is an eagle. I’ve also seen dogs, cats, lions, rabbits, bears, dolphins, swans...even an elephant.”
Erik turned the knowledge over in his head. “So there’s a lot of different kinds, then.”
Carewyn nodded. Erik looked at her, tilting his head to the side.
“It’s kind of amazing you and Amari have the same one, then, if there are so many...”
Carewyn’s eyes flickered over her shoulder toward Erik’s bedroom door, which had ended up slightly ajar.
“...It is,” she said very softly.
Carewyn held out a hand so she could take Erik’s empty mug from him and got to her feet.
“All right...you should try to get some rest. Chocolate helps a lot, but some peace and quiet and maybe even some sleep should help you fully recover. I’ll be up the rest of the night, so whenever you feel hungry again, you can come on out and I’ll make us something for supper. Or breakfast, depending on how late it gets,” she added with a wry smile.
“Don’t you mean ‘early?’” asked Erik with another mischievous grin.
The smile then slid off his face, making it look more serious.
“...Ms. Cromwell...I want to learn how to make a Patronus. Will you teach me?”
Carewyn paused by the door and considered Erik carefully.
“It’s very advanced magic -- many full-grown wizards are never able to cast one. It won’t be easy for you to learn, or for me to teach...”
Her almond-shaped blue eyes softened.
“...but if you’re determined, then I’ll do my best.”
Erik looked relieved. He’d clearly thought Carewyn might say “no.”
“Thank you, Ms. Cromwell.”
Once Carewyn had put Erik to bed, she closed the door to his room, casting a few silencing charms around it so that she wouldn’t have to worry about Orion and her disturbing his rest with their conversation. Then she washed out Erik’s mug in the sink, put it in the dishwasher, and headed into the living room where Orion was waiting. Carewyn found him meditating with his legs crossed on the couch, and decided not to immediately disrupt him. Instead she primly placed herself down on the couch beside him and watched him, taking the time to gather her own thoughts. After all...it wasn’t every day you found out that someone shared your Patronus. Carewyn wasn’t the type to believe in fate or predestination, but...knowing they had something like that in common...that their souls were that similar, when she’d been so resigned to the thought that she could never be everything he deserved...strangely it brought her some comfort.
“How is he?”
Carewyn blinked as she came back down to earth. Orion slowly opened his eyes -- his expression was very calm and his gaze very gentle.
“Better,” said Carewyn.
She rested her arm on the arm of the couch and trailed a hand through her hair.
“...He didn’t just come out to help the Muggles. The dementors...made him hear things, from his past, even while they were outside.”
Orion nodded, his eyes glinting with solemn understanding. “With how many of them there were...I daresay to someone with emotional scars, particularly fresh ones, such an aura could be stifling.”
Carewyn nodded too.
“I’m just so lucky that you were around,” she said softly. “If you hadn’t been there to protect him, I don’t know what I would’ve...”
Her voice trailed off, lacking the strength to finish the thought. Orion extended a hand and, after a brief hesitation, rested it on top of hers in her lap.
“You couldn’t have known what might happen,” he murmured gently.
“I should have,” said Carewyn in frustration. “I knew when I took on those cases, I’d be opening myself up to death threats -- I’ve gotten plenty of them through post....I should’ve known they’d try to target the ones I care about, just like R did -- ”
“You placed very strong protections over this flat. No Dark wizard could have gotten inside -- even the dementors couldn’t.”
“But my shields still couldn’t protect Erik from them! He was still affected by them...I should’ve been able to -- ”
“Carewyn,” Orion cut her off.
His level, patient voice betrayed a slight edge, even as his hand migrated up her arm to cling to her shoulder, steering her around so as to make her face him properly.
“You cannot plan for everything,” he said quietly, his voice still unusually firm. “You’ve done everything one could humanly do, to protect and care for Erik. You love him with all of your fire, and that shows in your actions. That’s more than enough, and better than can be said for most people. ...Please don’t hurt yourself like this.”
There was a silence. Carewyn stared into Orion’s eyes -- the galaxy-like depths were endless and unwavering, but something in the back of them...it was like they were beckoning her closer, wanting her to drown in them. She could sense something imploring and concerned, but also something soft, caring...longing. There was a flash of memory: herself as a sixth-year student, walking down the halls with her long hair and uniform in disarray and her eyes lacking all light or hope -- “I know the beasts we fight are different, but...” -- the first time Orion and she ever held hands, the day of the Quidditch Cup Award ceremony --
Carewyn hadn’t realized how they’d subconsciously moved closer together, while staring into each other’s eyes. She broke eye contact at last, her red lips curled up in a weak smile.
“...And here I thought I was supposed to be the one who’s talented at Legilimency,” she said sardonically.
Orion’s lips curled up in a wry smile as his hand slid back down her arm and returned to its place on top of her hand. “Don’t worry, you still are. Your inner fire is just too blazing for me not to feel its heat, Carewyn Cromwell.”
“Or you just know me too well,” said Carewyn.
Her gaze came down to rest on their joined hands. She slowly shifted her hand so that she could wrap her fingers around Orion’s wrist and hold it. Orion stiffened ever-so-slightly at first, but after a few seconds, he tentatively tried to mirror the gesture, brushing his own fingers along her wrist so he could take it in return. Carewyn looked up at his face and their eyes met -- although Orion’s face appeared as calm as ever, there was something almost shy coming off of him.
“Orion...”
Carewyn bit the inside of her cheek. She had trouble meeting his gaze head-on -- her eyes had flitted down to his lips.
“...Your Patronus...how long did you know? How long did you know that it’s...?”
Orion now seemed to be the one having trouble meeting Carewyn’s eyes. He turned his face away, his grip on her wrist shifting slightly the way a horse might nervously pad the ground with their hooves.
“...Since the moment I first saw yours.”
Carewyn was taken aback. “That long?”
Orion’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down in his throat as he swallowed. He bowed his head, his eyes moving into the shadow of his bangs.
“...I’m sure you’re wondering why I didn’t say anything, back then,” the Star Chaser said softly. “To be honest...it’s something I’ve asked myself for years. I had reasons, of course, but even just repeating them back now...I daresay McNully would’ve graded them with very low percentages.”
He exhaled quietly through his nose in a sigh. Carewyn gave his wrist a light squeeze to try to comfort him.
“At the time, I was simply enjoying the moment, spending it with you,” he continued. “You were up and about, largely healed and in good spirits -- and in that moment, the thought that you and I shared a Patronus couldn’t distract from that. Instead it...enhanced the feeling. Gave it nuance. Not only was I happy to be with you...but I was seeing you more clearly than I ever had before. It was like seeing a beautiful wild horse from the distance for years, before finally getting close enough to recognize it as a unicorn.”
He glanced at her out the side of his eye.
“...I told you...that I’d thought we were alike before, didn’t I?”
Carewyn nodded, her lips spreading into a slight smile. “Yes. It seems you were right about that -- more than I realized.”
Orion tried to smile back, but it came out rather weak and hesitant.
“I knew we were kindred spirits the year we first met, Carewyn Cromwell. I knew that for all of our differences, you...saw the world the way I did. Wanted but a small piece of that world to call your own, as I did. Sought the freedom to live a peaceful, modest life, as I did. Guided and supported others, but only shared all of yourself with a special few, the way I did. And I confess, that’s not something I can say for much of anyone. And yet, even with that...it took seeing your Patronus for me to even consider looking at you with any sort of...stirrings.”
Carewyn couldn’t completely bite back a laugh. “‘Stirrings?’”
Orion’s cheeks darkened with a slight flush.
“I cannot call them feelings,” he said almost defensively, “that’s too strong a word. And...we were flying in different directions -- you toward the Vaults, me toward the Magpies. Neither of us could have changed direction at that time, even if we’d wanted to, and neither of us should have. We’d both worked too hard, put in so much tenacity in the quest for our ‘gold,’ to afford to get distracted so close to the end. Especially when...all there really was between us...was an old wives tale.”
Carewyn’s eyes became a little smaller and sadder as she squeezed his wrist again.
“Orion,” she murmured, “there has always been more than that. There’s been respect...faith...caring. And...”
Wendy’s advice rippled over her mind.
“Let him make that choice to love you, whatever it might look like. You’ll never know if it’s meant to be if you don’t ever ask if it could be.”
With a swallow and a light flush, Carewyn raised her free hand up to Orion’s cheek. When her fingers met his face, Orion gave a slight start -- as gently as she could, Carewyn cradled his cheek in her hand, using the contact to coax him to look at her.
“...I hope you know those things have only grown since.”
The softness of her voice and the beautiful caring rippling in her eyes were enough to make the tenseness in Orion’s shoulders ebb away completely. Within a minute, he’d melted, his own hand coming up to rest on top of hers on his face and his eyes fluttering closed as he savored the warmth and softness of her touch.
“Carewyn...” he exhaled.
He took her hand on his cheek, holding it as he brought it down under his chin and squeezed it tight. When he opened his eyes again, they were full of longing.
“…I have…nurtured this bud in my heart…longer than I have ever admitted to anyone – including myself. But when we collided again, during the War, that bud only served to grow further…and then bloom into a blossom so strong and beautiful that I could never hope to hide it…however ashamed I am that I denied it the sunshine and attention it deserved years ago. I’ve wasted…so much time, trying to stifle it…trying to be happy with what was in front of me, rather than chase what my soul was clearly aching for. All because of my own inner doubts -- because of the reluctance I felt, in the face of making a choice between the dream I’d been fighting for for so long…and the chance of a new dream I’d never imagined. I realize I have been a coward, Carewyn Cromwell – something you have never been, from the moment we first met. I don’t know if someone like that could be your soulmate – if I could ever live up to the standard that word entails...especially when your standards are so very high…but most assuredly, you are a special woman, one I will never know the likes of again…and I love you, all the same.”
The words made Carewyn’s heart feel like it’d swollen to a size too big for her mere rib cage to contain. Her eyes crinkled up to make room for the smile of pure joy that conquered her face and she gently rested her hand over Orion’s heart.
“You don’t need to worry about my standards, Orion Amari,” she said with blazing emotion in her eyes. “I...don’t know if I can be everything you need or deserve...but the way I feel about you, at least...I promise, you won’t ever have to doubt that.”
And in a fluid movement, she’d swooped in and placed a chaste, searing kiss to his lips. It only lasted a few seconds before she pulled away, so it was rather short. Too short, it seemed...for after Carewyn had withdrawn, Orion -- his black eyes flooding with a kind of emotion Carewyn had never seen before -- reached out both hands to cup her face and tilt her head back up so that he could kiss her again, more gently and deeply than before. When they broke apart again, both sets of eyes, blue and black, were sparkling.
“I’m sorry,” said Carewyn with a weak smile. “I’m afraid I’m a bit out of practice.”
Orion smiled fully, handsomely, as he trailed his hand along her cheek to brush her short ginger hair behind her ear.
“I would be happy to train with you, my dear Abraxan.”
Chapter Two: Suki’s Flip-Flop, Intensive, Very Long Day
On a pretty big whim, Sienna, Jackie, Aurora, and Elijah had decided to look at apartments and move in together on the walk home from Donahue’s. Turned out none of their current living situations were ideal, and as crazy as it sounded, Suki felt like this might just work out. Weirder stuff had happened, right? She’d lived with complete strangers in college, so this was no huge thing, really. Over the following week they scored themselves an absolute bargain of a stunning top level apartment which overlooked the classic Boston skyline. Somehow, they’d managed to convince the landlord to rent to them for cheap, and soon enough everyone started to move their stuff in.
To celebrate their gorgeous new apartment, the group decided that they would throw a housewarming party at some point in the next few weeks. Planning was immense - everyone wanted to do something different, plus finding time where everyone would be off work was difficult. Elijah had never thrown a house party before, so he was overlooking most of the planning, while Sienna and Suki did tasks such as stocking up on cheap booze. Aurora didn’t really want to get involved in the planning side of things, too focused on her studies, but was looking forward to the party all the same. She was crazy grateful to be able to move away from her overbearing aunt. Jackie also wasn’t so involved in the planning, but more out of lack of interest in making plans. After a week or so, they’d decided on a date. All that was left to do was to invite everyone. And, yeah, that pretty much meant everyone.
Suki’s mind had been pretty occupied, mostly by a certain sun-kissed surgeon who’d swayed her to The Stone Roses. Since that first night, Suki had only seen Bryce in passing in the corridors, always taking lunch breaks and the like at different times due to the different demands of their jobs. He’d wink or grin at her and for a moment she’d be completely focused on only that. Not to mention the all-consuming sexual chemistry they had with each other being sparked each time they merely passed by one another. She was continuously bothered by the strange familiar feeling she felt with him, increasingly frustrated that she couldn’t pin it down.
About two and a half weeks in, Suki was suffering from an absolutely awful day. None of her patients were looking at a positive outcome, and she was feeling utterly helpless about it all. Existentialism: Doctor’s edition. She’d shut herself away in a supply closet to be alone with her thoughts. And to cry. What good was being doctor if you couldn’t save lives? And everything felt like a minefield. One wrong move and it could all implode. Misdiagnoses were so easy to make and so incredibly dangerous, she could prescribe someone a medicine they were allergic to and make their symptoms broaden, or even just upsetting someone because there was nothing she could do. She worried she wasn’t ready for this job. It was all very well reading up about illnesses and treatments, but actually putting it into practice? Dealing with real life people? So incredibly intimidating.
Abruptly the door creaked open and Suki jumped back.
“Oh! Sorry, I didn’t… think anyone was in here.” It was Bryce. Of course it was. He looked just as good as ever, framed in the dark by the light from the hall. “I just needed to get some suture kits...”
“It’s fine, just shut the door,” her voice cloyed but she tried to subtly wipe the tears from her eyes.
He did as she asked and came closer towards her. Even though it was dark, he noticed the red rings round her eyes and wet cheeks.
“Hey, hey. What’s going on?” His voice was soothing and gentle, his usual cocky demeanours put on a shelf.
“It’s just… I feel like I have too much power. I pretty much get to decide who lives or dies. I get to decide which words to use to ruin someone’s life I-“ she couldn’t help it as the tears began to pour out again. She wasn’t sure why she was baring her soul to Bryce, but something in her knew he would know what to say. He stood and listened, watching patiently. Bryce stepped in so he was closer to Suki.
“If I tell someone I’ll save their life, but I can’t, how am I supposed to live with myself? How do I tell a parent their six-year-old will never see it to seven? Bryce…” she continued, her eyes were wide and glassy as she stared up at him. Hearing her say his name like that stirred something in Bryce he wasn’t quite comfortable admitting.
“I know. But you’re damn good at your job, Suki. If you tell someone you’ll save their life, and you do, how do you not believe in yourself? How do you tell an old man he’s in remission? There are so many good parts to this job. It’s hard as shit, yeah, but we knew that. It was never going to be easy.” He lifted up his free hand and ran his thumb softly along her eyes to clear her tears.
“But it’s my fault. If I fail a patient... Maybe I shouldn’t be here.”
He laughed a brief hearty chuckle. “You made It through med school, climbed your way to the top of the medical interns at Edenbrook, and you really think you’re in the wrong place? I’ve seen those rankings, Moore. You’re good crop.”
She gave him a lopsided smile. His confidence had a way of rubbing off on her.
“Every doctor has their moment of doubt. It’ll pass.” He continued.
“How do you do it?”
He shrugged. “I just know I’m damn good at what I do. It’s still early days, Suki. Just let it come and go.”
She nodded and felt the desire to hug him. Lucky for her, he held his arms out to her and she collided with his hard chest, again. She still had her arms crossed in front of her, but moved to cradle her head into the crook of his neck, shifting her body so she was leaning into him. Bryce’s arms enveloped her, like a large, hard, teddy. She felt like a baby, cocooned and cooed at by the light soothing motion Bryce was drawing down her back. It felt like the most natural thing.
“Shit. I guess you are damn good at what you do,” she said. Her voice was muffled by Bryce’s scrub top, but he heard her all the same, and couldn’t help but grin at the girl in his arms.
“I told you, I’m a talented guy.”
She pulled her head back after a minute, looking up into his brown eyes, which were honey like his skin usually, but deep and alluring in the dimmed light of the supply closet. His arms still cradled her.
She suddenly wanted to tangle her fingers into his hair and kiss him passionately. Because despite the snark, the ego, the cockiness, he’d made her feel better after an incredibly difficult day. And there was definitely something scandalous about being in a supply closet together. The thick sexual tension that had been whirring for two weeks now was at an all time high. Her eyes flirted down to his plump lips, still ghosted with a smile. Her heart was pumping right out of her chest, she was surprised he couldn’t feel it against his own. The chemistry could be cut with a knife. She tightened her arms around herself as she made the flash decision. Without giving him too much time to back out, Suki swiftly moved forward and pressed her lips to his.
He hesitated at first, still as stone, giving Suki a moment to freak out – shit, he doesn’t want to be doing this. I made the wrong call - before he pushed his lips back into hers with fervent want. They reacted to each other like it was something that had been simmering for way longer than just two and half weeks. Their mouths clambered almost clumsily around each other. Bryce’s hands moved up her back and to her neck with a caress, before he steered her round and pushed her up against the shelves. A few bits of equipment fell down, but they didn’t care. Suki pulled him as close to her as she could, hands gripping his waist. She could feel his muscles move under her fingers as they kissed, which sent a jolt through her stomach. She was actually kissing him. For some reason, the idea felt unattainable and the fact that it was happening felt fantastical.
His lips were soft but applied pressure, his tongue demanding and dominating. Suki let out an unintentional moan, causing a gruff noise from Bryce’s throat, and she could feel him smiling against her lips. Caught up in the passion of the moment, and wanting to savour every part of this, Suki lifted up a leg and wrapped it around Bryce’s hip. He responded by pressing his body tighter against hers and removing a hand from her neck to support her leg, copping a feel of her backside on the way there.
Suki didn’t even care that the shelves were digging into her back. All she cared about in that moment was getting as much as she could out of Bryce. Because, god, was he hot. His kisses were practised and skilled, clearly something he’d done a lot. She pulled him closer towards her, and he removed his lips from hers to burrow his face into her neck and suck at that sweet spot. She gasped at the sensation, earning a cocky chuckle from Bryce. If he gave her a hickey, she was dead.
To avoid that possibility, she pulled his face from her neck to meet her lips again, deepening the kiss, and finally threading her fingers through his floppy hair in the way she’d wanted to before.
A loud creak and unexpected light falling on her shut eyelids indicated that the door had been opened. Suki opened her eyes wide and looked over to the door to see an older Doctor. Oh god. She knew this guy. Dr Zaid Mirani – her attending. The leg which had been round Bryce’s hip dropped immediately.
“Can you give us a minute?” Bryce asked, frustrated, eyes shut and forehead against Suki’s, not giving a single shit that they’d just been caught in the act, not even bothering to see who it was.
“I need some scissors. Don’t let me stop you,” Zaid snapped.
At this, Bryce sighed and stepped away from Suki. Suki tried turning away coyly so that Zaid didn’t see her face, moving away from the shelves to give him access. There was a deafening awkward silence as Zaid rummaged through the shelves to find what he needed, Suki looking anywhere but at either of the men in the room. Bryce’s eyes watched her, flattening her hair down on her head and smoothing down her clothes.
After what felt like far too long, Zaid left without a word. The door shut behind him and Bryce and Suki were sent back into dim light. She looked over to Bryce finally, who was leaning against a cupboard with his hands in his pockets, a humorous smile playing on his lips. Even in the dark he looked good, hair ruffled from her fingers and lips swollen from relentless kissing. Ah, shit. He looked so good. Unlike Suki, he hadn’t taken the time to refine his appearance. But, she kind of liked it that way.
“That kinda killed the mood,” he said, pushing off the cupboard.
“…yeah. We should get back to work, anyway,” replied Suki. She was hot from embarrassment, again. This boy sure knew how to get her flustered, both unintentionally and intentionally. That kiss sure had some intention behind it. It had been a nice distraction, and admittedly she felt much better, but it was time to get back to reality.
He chuckled and scratched his thumb over his chin. He didn’t seem embarrassed at all. Then again, asking a resident to leave so they could continue their steamy make-out didn’t strike Suki as something someone who was easily embarrassed would do. Unluckily for her, Suki was a stickler for humiliation. Maybe hooking up with Dr Bryce No-Fear wasn’t something a blubbering blushing mess should repeat.
Bryce walked toward Suki, and she almost jumped back, worried he might try again. For a couple of reasons: worried they’d be caught again, and Suki would never live it down with herself, but also worried she wouldn’t be able to stop at a sensible place. He was too sexy, and too experienced. But he reached behind Suki to grab a suture kit. The whole reason he’d even been here in the first place. He held it up to show her, before making his way to the door.
“You’ll kill it out there, Dr. Moore,” he reassured before opening the door, letting the light flood the room again, and shutting it behind him once again leaving Suki in the dimness.
She crept out of the supply closet, not looking where she was going and accidentally ramming straight into Jackie.
“You look a mess!” Jackie laughed, noting Suki’s scruffed up hair and creased scrubs.
Suki cursed herself internally as she once again started to sweat.
“Oh! Long day, is all. I’m only halfway through, too!”
Jackie side-eyed her blustery response. “I’ve got to get this shot to this patient. You’re lucky this time, Moore.”
—-
A couple of hours later, Suki was finally grabbing a bite to eat when she received a page from Aurora.
Suki rushed into the room, where Aurora was already debriefing the resident. Shit. It was Zaid. She prayed that he hadn’t caught her face before, that it had been too dark and she’d turned away quick enough that he hadn’t recognised her.
“Hey, Aurora. What’s the situation?” She breathed out, exhausted from speeding up there. Aurora looked grateful as she turned to Suki.
“Moore,” Zaid greeted tightly. Something told her that he had definitely seen her face earlier. He didn’t seem like the type to bring it up, though.
“Ms. Redford was admitted for a broken neck, but her blood work looks incredibly strange…”
—-
“So, Dr Mirani’s a pretty grumpy guy, but why do I feel like there was a reason he was short with you earlier?” Aurora asked as the walked down the corridor to their next patient. Damn her for being smart and perceptive.
Suki weighed up whether or not to tell Aurora. It might be quite nice to have someone on her side, to tell all the awkward stories. She hadn’t done the whole secret make-out since college, and back then, she had a roommate to gossip about it with. At the end of the day Suki still barely knew Aurora; sure, they lived together, but they hardly even had a chance to be at the apartment together with their different shifts and the like. And when they weren’t at work, they were sleeping or eating. Maybe that meant telling her would feel like less of a big deal? Then again, even the idea of saying it was making her cringe. Plus, Aurora was great but she might not be too impressed that Suki had been taking time out of work to make-out with a surgical intern. In a supply closet which anyone could walk in on. And, had walked in on. A senior attending. She decided against it.
“I don’t know. I just don’t think he likes me much,” she wasn’t a very good liar, which Aurora seemed to glean; but she didn’t push further.
—-
After what felt like the most exhausting day ever - having difficult patients, a mental breakdown in a supply closet, a hot make out session in the same supply closet, being caught by her attending, and then having hours more of gruelling work – Suki threw herself onto her bed dramatically. It felt like her whole body, including her internal organs, was on fire. She eventually got up to change into her pyjamas, clean her face, and brush her teeth. There was a knock on her door. She opened it to reveal it was Elijah.
“Hey, what’s up?” He asked, it looked like he’d been home a while. Suki was happy to see him nonetheless.
“Just winding down after work, you know.”
“Yeah, today was a long one,” he added awkwardly.
“Tell me about it.”
He seemed like there was something he knew, or wanted to say, but didn’t.
“Movie?” Elijah asked.
“Sure, I might pass out though.”
She followed Elijah to the sofa and let him load up Netflix. She pulled off the fluffy blanket from the arm and snuggled into the crook of the sofa, next to Elijah’s chair. They put on a classic romcom and settled in to watch it, everyone else either asleep or working. Suki and her other roommates had become close quickly, but she still felt she wanted to bond more with them, get to know them better. She truly loved each one of them, and they each had their own personal qualities which enriched the group.
“So-“ Elijah finally came out with about a quarter of the way in, only to turn and see Suki had passed out.
Elijah tucked her in on the sofa and shut the TV off so she wouldn’t be disturbed. He would have to talk to her again another time. He wheeled away into his own bedroom.
—-
Around an hour later, Suki woke with a stir, taking a moment to recognise her surroundings. She must’ve fallen asleep here, and she noticed how she was tucked into the blanket. Elijah. How was she ever going to bond more with her flat mates If she couldn’t even stay awake to watch a movie with them? She sighed, folding up the blanket to place on the sofa arm again, and made her way into her own bed.
In the dark of the night, Suki’s thoughts wandered to Bryce’s lips on hers, his hands on her neck, his lips on her neck, his body close to hers…
She thought about that smirk and that laugh, the way his hair felt under her fingers, his taut stomach muscles under her hands. The way he tasted clean, faintly minty, the smoothness of his lips on her own. The feeling of her leg wrapped round his hip. If Zaid hadn’t interrupted when he had, Suki wasn’t sure she would’ve been able to stop. Truthfully, it had been a while since she’d slept with anyone, and a while since she’d actually been so sexually attracted to someone.
But she tried not to think about it. He’d helped her out of a tight spot earlier, and she’d thanked him. Now, she would have to put in all her effort to be a better doctor. Not try to sleep with the other interns. No matter how sexy their body and face and demeanour was. She wondered why he’d been so kind to her, taken the time to reassure her and validate her thought. Perhaps just a ploy to get that kiss, or something more, but Suki wasn’t really sure she cared if it had been. Even so, he’d seemed genuine. She supposed he was a doctor after all, helping people was second nature to him.
Come to think of it, the way they’d kissed in the supply closet struck that odd feeling in her again. How did she know him? Did he know her? Was she just superimposing someone else on to him to make him more appealing to her carnal desires and more of a mystery to solve? Maybe it was that if she let herself get hung up in this completely farcical idea, she could ignore what she was really thinking about deep down: her failures as a doctor.
So, maybe she didn’t know Bryce at all. She just liked how he looked and wanted there to be something. They say if you desire something, it pops up everywhere. So, those feelings of déjà vu, maybe they were all in her head. Or maybe she was just spiralling, after the ridiculously lengthy and eventful day. Her eyelids started to drop unintentionally. Maybe she would think about this tomorrow, instead…
For a writing prompt, Indruck post apocalyptic au (preferably everyone is human?) Indrid is infected by some sort of alien parasite, and the only way they can save him is to cut it out of him without anesthesia? Feel free to be as graphic as you want, but if it’s too whumpy for you, no pressure to write it! Thanks as always!
Here you go! It’s mid-level graphic: if it were a movie, you wouldn’t be seeing guts everywhere, but you would see the wounds. Also, content warning for body horror, namely the kind where a fungus takes over your body, and referenced suicide (no suicide actually occurs, don’t worry)
He should have seen it coming.
The tell-tale dampness and smell in the air, like battery acid and rotten milk, the fact that he’d made it the whole trip without seeing any Mycilioptera (that was, according to Joseph, the scientific term for the for the cat-sized, skittering alien creatures looking for someone to sting).
The creature was on him with a droning, high whine, scratching his face, smearing stinging mucus across his eyes and mouth. He made a rookie error, following his instinct to rip off the the substance dulling his senses, rather than feel sweep his arms over his body, locate the creature, and hurl it as far away as he could.
When the stinger hit his stomach, he screamed. The noise was useless; this quadrant of the city was abandoned months ago. He collapsed to the ground, clutching his sides as the pain seeps through them. His eyes cleared enough that he forced his fingers to work, grip the handle of his hatchet, and cleave it with a crunch.
Now, clutching the steering wheel of the Winnebago (in this world you do not need a fast car; you need something with thick sides and room for supplies and friends), he knows there are only two ways this can go.
If he is lucky, the parasite will be slow acting enough and he will stay lucid enough to reach the ranch in time for someone to remove it.
If he is unlucky, he will run out of time, and the parasite will take control of his body, manipulate him zombie-like to an advantageous location, and burst from his chest, mouth, and eyes in milky-white stalks, sending spores into the air, which will either grow in to adults or be inhaled by any other humans in a two mile radius, subjecting them to a prolonged version of Indrid’s fate.
He leans on the gas pedal, hurtling down the empty backroad. They found an abandoned, un-pilfered gas station and filled all the vehicles, with some left over for scouting and supply runs. And, if it came to it, an escape.
From the passenger seat, his backpack meows. A familiar black and brown head pokes out, the ratty collar still reading “Winnie.” Winnie, the reason he ran into that abandoned parking garage during a salvage mission in the first place.
Because she’s Duck’s cat, the one he thought he’d never see again after she fled out the door when the city evacuated. And Indrid loves Duck Newton more than anything in the world.
They’d been friends before everything went to hell, inching towards a confession of deeper feeling and Indrid still remembers the way his heart felt when he spotted Duck at the evac staging shelter. He hadn't even opened his mouth when Duck was hugging him, holding him tight and saying he was so fucking glad he was okay.
When three, then five, then ten infected humans burst in the evac center, Duck had Indrid’s hand they were running before almost anyone else knew what was happening, bandanas over their mouths because Josephs last message before the cell towers were overloaded was to keep their noses and mouths covered.
They made it, against all odds, out into the countryside, Thacker’s Quonset hut and Mama’s farmhouse as safe as they’d hoped. The others trickled in one by one or two by two; sometimes bringing other survivors with them. Other survivors found them later, though the humans they saw became fewer and fewer with each day.
Mama took in everyone who wasn’t infected, while Joseph, Dani, Duck and Thacker operated and sewed up the infected who could be saved (if removed before it takes over the host, the parasite will die when exposed to air). Those who could not were given choices; most chose a swift death, especially when they learned that dying before the parasites emerged would kill the alien inside them.
And every night, Indrid and Duck shared a small bed, clinging to each other and telling jokes or stories until they could sleep. Two months in, Duck kissed him in the dark and Indrid kissed back, and when Duck asked if it was only the end of the world driving Indrid’s affection, Indrid shook his head
“I’ve wanted this for awhile. And I don’t know what’s coming. All I know is I want to be with you when it does.”
At the front of the Winnebago Indrid wipes his eyes; what a foolish thing to say. He doesn’t want Duck here for this, that’s for damn sure, and yet he drives towards him anyway,
He’s feverish, sweat running down his face and arms shaking, and while his veins are still blue, he can see the parasite rippling under his skin; it’s not wasting any time.
He’s not going to make it. And if he tries, he’ll put all his friends in danger
There’s no choice but to pull to the side of the road a few miles from the farm and step from the trailer, leaving the door ajar so Winnie can escape into the wild. He’s crying all the while, breath coming in shaky gasps; just because he’s doing the right thing doesn’t mean he isn’t miserable and terrified.
Indrid pulls out his pistol. He won’t be an incubator, he won’t spread this, he won’t help the things that took so much of his world from him.
He won’t ever see Duck again.
He sobs, once, then wretches as the fever grows and his vision goes spotty. He has to do this, even though every time he looks at the weapon his whole body shakes with fear.
“‘Drid!”
Duck’s voice, just audible over the thrum of an engine. Then tires screech into view, Aubrey piloting a jeep. Duck jumps to the ground before she’s even stopped.
“‘Drid, don’t you fuckin dare-”
“Nono, stay back!” He scrambles on his hands and heels, slamming into the side of the trailer, “I got stung, I already have a fever, I can feel it moving-”
Duck drops to his knees, lifting Indrid’s glasses.
“Your eyes are still brown. It ain’t too late.”
“But the veins near the wound are going white” Joseph stands behind Duck, “we won’t be able to get him back in time.”
“Th-that’s why I pulled over, I, I can’t get the rest of you infected, please, please just go-”
“You got the field kit?”
Aubrey tosses it to Duck.
“We can still save you, sugar. And I’m sure as hell gonna fuckin try.”
Duck and Joseph haul him to his feet and carry him inside, laying him on his back on the table. Aubrey follows him, sitting down on one bench and taking his hand.
“We got no anesthetic, so this is gonna hurt like a motherfucker, but you can do it. Okay?”
Indrid nods weakly.
“We’re gonna get you through this. You’re” fear flickers across Duck’s face, “you’re gonna be okay.”
Aubrey braces Indrid’s upper body, Joseph his lower, as Duck cleans around the puncture in his stomach and sterilizes his tools. Aubrey holds up a hand,
“We need something for your mouth, right?”
“Good call” Duck retrieves a wooden spoon from a drawer, setting it between Indrid’s teeth.
“Okay” Duck takes a deep breath, meets Indrids eyes, “okay. I’m gonna start cuttin. Ready?”
Indrid just manages a thumbs up.
It hurts, because a blade cutting into your skin will always hurt. And because it hurts Indrid screams.
“That’s good” Joseph is trying to sound reassuring, but even he looks worried, “scream if you need to, research suggests it helps with the pain.”
“It’s not too deep, thank fuckin christ.”
Indrid stares at the ceiling and yells when Duck widens the incision.
“Almost can see ‘im. Yeah, there, he’s startin to shrivel already from the air.”
Relief mingles with the pain in his tears. Aubrey pets his head, “you’re gonna be okay, see?”
“C’mere you, you fuckin monster, you fuckin think you can take him from me” Duck hisses, then says gruffly, “Joe, need you to hold it open, go wash your hands.”
Once Joe is in position, there’s a horrible, wet sound as Duck places his hand inside.
Searing, blinding pain as he pulls the parasite free, Indrid’s blood running down Duck’s arms. He bites the wooden handle and it cracks. The creature wrinkles and dies in Duck’s hands and he hurls it outside.
“Shit, shit you’re bleeding a lot. Okay, fuck, okay, that was the hard part, this is just stitches. Just stitches.”
Indrid whimpers, clinging to Aubrey’s hand and scraping his nails against the formica table. Duck hits too deep on a stitch and Indrid winces and cries as his boyfriend curses.
“Here, Duck, trade with me.” Joe holds out his hand and Duck passes him the needle. The shorter man settles by Indrid, taking his other hand. He’s still bloodstained, and Indrid can feel him shaking, but he brings Indrid’s knuckles to his mouth and kisses his knuckles again and again.
“I’m here, darlin, I’m here, I got you, it’s almost over.”
Indrid focuses on his voice, pretends they’re in bed together, counts the kisses on his hand and wrist while the pain fades to the background. Dimly, around kiss number thirty-five, he hears Joseph sigh in relief.
“Done.”
--------------------------------------------------
Indrid curls up under the covers, clothes sticking to him with sweat and his stomach throbbing with pain.
“Easy, sugar, easy” Duck sits up from a makeshift bed on the floor, “here, lemme get you some painkillers.” He comes back with a glass of water and two white pills. Indrid swallows them, lets Duck help him from his shirt and wipe the sweat away with a cloth.
“How did you know to come look for me?”
“Just had a feelin. I kept lookin out at the road, saw the ‘Bago weavin, goin a million miles an hour, and just knew somethin was wrong.”
“Thank you. For coming for me.”
“I always will. Thanks for not deckin me or kickin me while I was workin on you.”
“Duck you saved my life, kicking would be rather rude.”
It’s a weak goof, but Duck smiles and kisses him.
“Oh, uh, here, someone else wants to say thanks.”
“Mraoow?” Winnie stares at him from Duck’s arms.
“We scared her burstin into the trailer. Poked her head out right after you passed out. So you, uh, missed me bawlin like a baby seein her again.”
“Awwww” Indrid rests his head on Duck’s shoulder, ruffling Winnie’s fluff.
“I mean, that and it hit me how close I came to losin you. Poor Aubrey was tryin to comfort me in the Jeep while Joe drove you back here in the ’Bago.”
Indrid strokes his cheek. He understands; the thought of never seeing Duck again was the worst thing to happen to him all day, sting included.
“Come to bed?”
“You sure? Might not be too comfortable.”
“I want to be held by you. I want to remember we’re both still here.”
Duck joins him under the blanket, Winnie curling up on their feet.
“Yeah, yeah we are. And I love you so goddamn much.”
“I love you too. And I promise to cut a parasite out of you if the need arises.”
“God I fuckin hope not.”
“Me too. There were...fewer of them this time. I think they may be dwindling.”
“Fingers crossed. But even if we got a long ways to go towards rebuildin a world, I still got you, and you still got me. And that’s worth a whole hell of a lot.”
Indrid kisses him, inhaling the smell of clean skin and scratching his cheek against Duck’s stubble.
“You’re right, my love. It is.”
You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift for Maeve/Luis?
Yes, oh my god I haven’t posted any writing in forever and this is so long but hopefully it’s worth it? Idk, I’m just happy my writer’s block is gone. So you know, send in asks and all that jazz. Also, enjoy!
You're on the phone with your girlfriend She's upset, she's going off about something that you said
Maeve hated eavesdropping, and she knew it was wrong, but it was hard to ignore the shrill voice on the other end of Luis’s phone. Maeve had wandered into the kitchen about five minutes after Bronwyn’s Christmas party started an hour ago. She told Bronwyn, who was still glowing her just-saw-Nate-for-the-first-time-in-months glow, that she was going to get a glass of water, but if she was being truthful as she sat on the cold granite with the bag of chips she fished out of her mom’s hiding spot, she really just couldn’t deal with being around people whose lives extended past Bayview High. She was perched on the counter, her legs pulled up to her chest. It was unusually warm for two days before Christmas, and Maeve felt weird in shorts and a knitted red pullover.
Luis didn’t notice her. Not that she expected him to. In his grand life, Maeve was pretty irrelevant, but one does expect to be noticed in their own kitchen. She didn’t really want to be seen anyway, so she paused the Beatles album playing on the kitchen speaker.
Maeve watched out of the corner of her eye as Luis paced around the hardwood floor with his phone a few inches away from his ear. His left hand was tugging relentlessly at his hair. After a few non-committal grunts, Luis turned off his phone, stuffed it in his pocket, and returned his hands to his hair where he tugged aggressively.
'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do.
“You’re gonna make yourself go bald you know,” Maeve said after Luis stood in the same spot for a minute, his hands tugging at his hair. Luis jumped and turned to look at her.
“What are you doing here?”
“I mean, it is my kitchen.”
“True.” Luis crossed the kitchen until he was right next to her. “Should you be sitting on the counter?”
“Probably not, but I’m hardly heavy.” Maeve extended her left leg, shifting herself until she was at the end of the counter. She hooked her foot around a stool from the island, and pulled it towards them. She shifted back onto the counter. “There. Have a stool.”
Luis smiled. “Thanks Maeve.”
“No problem. Was that Vanessa?”
“Yeah.”
“What was she yelling about?”
Luis took a deep breath and Maeve realized that possibly wasn’t the most tactful question. Not only because Luis’s girlfriend was constantly yelling, but because she just made it clear she was listening to his conversation.
“You don’t have to answer that.”
“No, no it’s okay. She’s just being a bitch about something I said.”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing really. Except that I had the audacity to make a joke.”
“Are you okay?”
“I will be if you don’t tell her I called her a bitch. And if you don’t repeat my duck joke. I think she thought I was talking about her.”
Maeve giggled. She knew Luis’s jokes could be out there sometimes.
“It’s absurd, I know. But god she kills me sometimes,” Luis said after a moment of silence.
Maeve didn’t know how to respond, so she passed him the bag of chips with an apologetic smile.
I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday night. I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like.
“What are you doing in here? Why aren’t you with everyone else?” Luis’s question was a reasonable one, but it still stung.
Maeve shrugged. “I wanted to be alone I guess.”
“Alone with potato chips and the Beatles?”
“Just about,” Maeve said with a smile.
“Vanessa hates any music from before the nineties.”
“Do you?”
“Nah, I grew up with the Beatles.”
“I did too.”
And she'll never know your story like I do.
“It must be weird. To be the youngest out of all of us. I mean, you’re only a junior.”
“Yeah, it is.”
“I’m not used to be the youngest.”
“Because four of your brothers are younger than you and only one is older?”
“Just about,” Luis said with a smile, echoing her. His smile dropped for a moment. “Vanessa is convinced I have three brothers.”
Maeve smiled as she stretched her legs in front of her. “She got rid of two of them?”
“Apparently.” Luis titled his head at her. “You look like Bronwyn in that sweater.”
“Do I?” No one ever told Maeve she looked like Bronwyn.
“Yeah, hold up.” Luis leaned forward, his hands on her hips as he twisted her towards him more. Maeve could feel sparks travel up her sides at his touch. His fingers were under her sweater, pressed against her skin. His dark brown eyes studied her face for a minute.
“Do I?” Maeve asked, her voice hardly audible.
“Do you what?”
“Look like my sister?”
“Nah,” Luis grinned the first genuine grin she’d ever seen. “You’re prettier.”
Maeve fought off a smile. “Don’t let Nate hear you say that.”
“It’s not my fault if he can’t accept the truth.”
Maeve opened her mouth to say something - she wasn’t quite sure what, she seemed to be running on liquid courage at the moment - but she never got to say anything because Luis’s phone started ringing. He glanced down at it, his grin fading.
“It’s Vanessa. I should answer it. Thanks for cheering me up.”
“Any time,” Maeve said.
But she wears short skirts I wear T-shirts
The next time Maeve saw Luis was five days later at Café Contigo. They were having dinner with Cooper before he had to go back to college, and Maeve was feeling increasingly uncomfortable as she stepped through the beaded curtain to the back room when she saw Vanessa standing over Luis’s chair. She was tossing her hair over her shoulder every moment she could, and her skirt was too short for the frigid wind blowing around the building. Maeve tugged at her t-shirt that used to belong to her mother. The shirt was faded so badly the words couldn’t be read, and the shirt, which usually comforted Maeve with its soft fabric and its perpetual coffee and doctor’s office scent - a smell that Maeve associated with her mother - was now facing Maeve’s wrath. She twisted the hem and considered just turning right back around. Being around Vanessa always made her feel like a fool.
“Have my sweater,” Addy mumbled in Maeve’s ear, pressing the heavy cardigan in her hand. Her eyes were on Luis and Vanessa, her look of disgust evident.
“Thanks,” Maeve mumbled back. Addy was the only one that knew about Maeve’s crush on Luis. Mostly because she was the one who informed Maeve that the crush existed.
She's cheer captain And I'm on the bleachers
“Are you exciting to start cheerleading again?” Bronwyn asked Vanessa politely as the conversation died down.
“Of course,” said Vanessa with a smirk. “I’m so glad Luis and I go to the same college. That way I can keep cheering him at football games.”
“That’s great!” Bronwyn sounded too enthusiastic, and she looked like she’d swallowed spoiled milk. Bronwyn was firmly in the “dislike Vanessa” club. Maeve snickered at her sister’s expression, and Vanessa turned to her. Maeve could feel Addy roll her eyes at Vanessa’s hawk like expression.
“Do you still write for the paper?” She asked it in a way that suggested writing for the paper was something awful.
“Sometimes,” Maeve said.
Vanessa smirked. “It must be boring, stuck on the bleachers writing about games.”
It must be exhausting ruining your boyfriend’s life all the time.
Maeve shrugged. “Not really.”
Vanessa smirked again, but didn’t say anything.
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find That what you're looking for has been here the whole time.
“Hey, Maeve, hold up.” Luis grabbed Maeve’s arm at the end of the night as she was about to leave. Bronwyn was going to drive around with Nate, so she was stuck driving home by herself.
Maeve turned and smiled up at Luis. “What’s up?”
Luis looks down at her for a moment before shaking himself and taking a deep breath. “I’m really sorry about Vanessa.”
Maeve, who had been annoyed with Vanessa the entire night, let her anger get the better of herself. “Are you really wiling to spend all your time apologizing for your girlfriend, Luis?” She tugged her arm out of his grasp, ignoring the butterflies that his touch bring forth. Luis didn’t answer, and she didn’t wait for one before stalking out of the door, letting it slam behind her despite good intentions.
If you could see That I'm the one Who understands you.
Maeve rested her head on her steering wheel after she stormed out of Contigo, letting her heartbeat even out. She didn’t want to let Luis bother her, but Vanessa had been annoying her since the girls had met, and Maeve hated the way Luis let her walk all over him.
She was about to turn her car on and drive home so she could wallow in self pity from the comfort of her window seat when someone knocked on her window.
“Ugh,” she mumbled when she saw Luis outside her car. She loved that boy, she really did, but he wasn’t someone she wanted to see at the moment.
She rolled down her car window. “Hey Maeve,” he said.
“Hello,” she responded.
“Can we talk for a sec?”
Maeve nodded and reached for the door handle. Luis stepped back, letting her climb out. She hadn’t been able to appreciate how handsome he looked earlier, but as he stood in front of her wearing black jeans and a blue bomber jacket over a white t-shirt, she mentally cursed Vanessa for being lucky enough to end up with him.
“I have a present for you.”
Maeve blinked at the white takeout box he handed her. “Um, thanks? Why?”
“You’re welcome. And because it took you a minute to point out something I should have realized a long time ago. You get me like that, you know?”
I know.
Maeve nodded.
“So thanks.”
“Any time.”
Been here all along. So, why can't you see
“I guess you want to head home?”
“Sort of. My curfew’s soon and my parents are expecting me. They’ll send a search party if I’m even a minute late.” Maeve mentally kicked herself. She probably sounded really childish to Luis. But to her immense relief, he just nodded.
“Your parents are more lenient than mine. If they don’t know where I am at any given minute they think I’ve been murdered.”
Maeve laughed. Luis ran his hand through his hair before reaching forward to touch the end of her cardigan.
“I wish you hadn’t taken Addy’s sweater. You looked cute.”
“You saw?” Maeve asked. She had hardly even stepped into the room when she accepted the sweater.
“You were the first person I saw.”
“That’s good to know.”
“Where was that shirt from?”
“My mom’s high school field hockey team.”
“Ah. Hockey. Not my sport.”
“But every other sport is.”
Luis winked at her. “I’ll let you go, but hey, Maeve, I’ll see you tomorrow right?”
“Probably. I’ll stop by Contigo for a few minutes.”
“Thank god. Vanessa never does, so you’re the one who lights up my day.”
You belong with me,
Maeve was practically floating when she climbed the steps to her room after her conversation with Luis in the middle of the parking lot. She’d hid the box from her mom, who’d wanted details about her night and probably would have wanted to open the box with her younger daughter. She was a little overbearing like that.
Maeve pulled off Addy’s cardigan, pausing to fold it neatly and place it on her cluttered desk, before dropping onto her window seat. She gently untied the ribbon around the box, and pulled open the flaps to reveal alfajores stacked neatly, one on top of another. On top of the cookies was a note written Luis’s cramped, slanted writing.
I know alfajores are your favorite. Enjoy!
- Luis
Maeve smiled down at the box. It struck her then, that she never once told Luis about her love for alfajores. He had just guess after watching her for so long. The idea warmed her from the core.
You belong with me.
As she bit into the first cookie, her phone buzzed with an unknown number. She unlocked her phone and grinned when she saw the text.
Hey Maeve, it’s Luis. Addy gave me your number, rather enthusiastically might I add
Maeve snorted. Addy really was trying.
Hey Luis
His response came right away.
Hey. Like the present?
Very much, thank you
Luis typed, erased, and typed again. Maeve watched the grey dots linger for an absurdly long time, munching on the cookies as some jazz drifted up from the kitchen. She could see her parents dancing in her mind, and she let herself imagine was dancing with Luis would be like.
Finally, the text came through right as Maeve was going to lock her phone and go downstairs to see if her parents wanted to make hot chocolate with her.
Want to go for a walk or something tomorrow?
Maeve grinned at her phone as she typed her response.
Walk in the streets with you in your worn-out jeans I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be.
Luis’s first though when he saw Maeve the next morning was that she looked beautiful. She was wearing a striped ribbed shirt tucked into the kind of faded jeans Vanessa would refuse to wear because they were “too tacky”. And Vanessa would most certainly balk at the scuffed black Converse high-tops Maeve was wearing. Now that he thought about it, she never seemed to wear different shoes. Quite the change from Vanessa’s shoe closet.
Maeve tugged her hair from her ponytail as she stepped in front of him, turning to look at him, her mane of nearly-but-not-quite-curly hair falling to her waist. If walking backwards bothered her, she didn’t show it. There was something childish about Maeve, something Luis wasn’t able to put his finger on. Maybe it was the way she wrinkled her button nose when she was happy, or maybe it was the way she bounced on the balls of her feet when she walked with him, like she was skipping, but not quite. Or maybe it was the way her freckles and amber eyes lit up her face, her dark hair falling down her back and framing her face in a way that made her look like the most beautiful girl in the world.
If he was being honest with himself, Maeve Rojas was the girl he’d wanted. For over a year. This walk was orchestrated just to spend time with her, and he silently thanked his luck for the fact that she agreed to come.
Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself, "Hey, isn't this easy?"
“Okay, and then what happened?” Luis asked, doubling over with laughter as Maeve recounted her last interaction with her friend/mortal enemy Lucy Chen.
“Oh she threw a fit. Poor Knox.”
Luis kept laughing, glancing at Maeve to see her shift on the bench and throw her hair over her shoulder. This, spending his time with Maeve, this was easy. Much better than spending time with Vanessa.
And you've got a smile That could light up this whole town.
Maeve grinned at him as he sat up. “I’m glad I could make you laugh.”
“I am too. I needed it.”
Maeve frowned, and he already missed her smile.
“Please don’t frown at me. Your much prettier when you smile.”
Maeve giggled, her nose scrunching. “Are you suggesting I’m not pretty when I smile?”
“No Maevey,” Luis said, casually resting his arm on the back of the bench, his hand nearly touching her shoulder. “I’m suggesting that you’re pretty at every moment of your life. But your prettiest when you’re happy.”
Maeve smiled at him, and Luis secretly wished she has shifted over and rested her head on his shoulder.
I haven't seen it in a while Since she brought you down.
“But seriously, Maeve,” Luis said, looking down at her. “Why do you hang out with Lucy? I remember her from last year and she’s nearly as exhausting as Vanessa.”
You say you're fine I know you better than that.
“I’m fine,” Maeve says. Honest, I am.”
Luis gives her his best side-eye. “No, you’re not.”
Hey, what you doing with a girl like that?
“Humph. What are you doing dating Vanessa then?”
“I’m not sure,” Luis answered honestly, surprising himself and Maeve.
“We’re a mess,” Maeve said.
“We most certainly are.”
She wears high heels,
Maeve, who had been very comfortable here on this bench with Luis, was brought back to reality by the sound of Vanessa’s obnoxious high heels.
“Luis! What are you doing?” she demanded, looking at the two of them.
“Sitting. What do you think?” Luis asked angerly. Maeve noticed with a pang that he’d moved his arm back to his side.
I wear sneakers.
“I see that!” Vanessa snapped. “Sitting with a girl who wears tacky jeans and Converses.”
Maeve rolled her eyes. Vanessa Merriman could say what she wanted, but nothing bothered Maeve. It bothered Luis though.
“Can you, just once, not be awful about everyone? Especially my friends?”
Vanessa snorted but didn’t say anything. “I’m leaving. My car is a block away. Come with me or don’t bother.”
Luis hesitated for a moment before standing and trailing after Vanessa like a dejected puppy. He gave Maeve apologetic look over his shoulder, waving casually as if he hadn’t just broken Maeve’s heart and left the shattered pieces on the bench for her to pick up and haphazardly put back together.
She's cheer captain, And I'm on the bleachers.
Hope was a dangerous thing, Maeve realized as she sat on the bench long after Luis had left. It filled up people’s most secret, barren corners with an indescribably brilliant feeling, and when it left, it took the feeling with it.
You like the dream, not the reality Bronwyn had said once. God, Maeve hated it when her sister was right. Because, the thing was, no one would choose short, scrawny, boring Maeve Rojas over a girl like Vanesa Merriman. It was a fact.
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find That what you're looking for has been here the whole time.
So, Maeve was left to pick up her broken pieces, walk home in the rain, and continue living her dream.
If you could see That I'm the one Who understands you,
Sorry about earlier was the only text Luis had sent her. Just three words.
Maeve stared at her phone, sitting on her window seat with a bowl of ice cream in front of her. The ice cream had been her mother’s idea. She didn’t know about Maeve’s crush on Luis, but she knew heartbreak when she saw it.
Maeve wasn’t sure how to respond.
Was it’s fine, but I’m sorry you have to date a girl who doesn’t get you to passive aggressive?
Been here all along.
Was I’ve known you longer too obvious?
So, why can't you see
You’re being blind, idiot was much too mean. Even for her.
You belong with me.
Maeve was a fan of facts. And the most simple one was this: Luis Santos belonged with her. In the end, after consulting Addy, she sent three words back: It’s okay, Luis.
Standing by and waiting at your backdoor.
Luis stood at her back door, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet, subconsciously mirroring Maeve’s movement from earlier that morning, when they had been waiting for their coffee before their disastrous walk. She pushed open her back door after a few minutes. She had changed into sweatpants and an old t-shirt. Her hair was wet, and she still looked as beautiful as he had in the morning.
“Why’d you come to the back door?” Maeve asked. Luis could read the subtext loud and clear.
Why are you here?
“It seemed better than the front door I guess.”
I just wanted to see if you were okay
“Well, makes sense.”
I’m alright.
“Yep.” Maeve put her hands in her pockets.
Cool
“Yep.” Luis echoed, running his hands through his hair.
Cool.
All this time how could you not know, baby?
“So, how’s Vanessa?” Maeve moved her arms around, with her hands still in her pockets. She looked like she was flying.
Are you still dating her?
“She’s fine.”
Yeah, I am.
Maeve nodded. “That’s nice.”
You’re being blind.
“Yeah.”
I know.
You belong with me,
“Well, I’ll see you around, Luis.”
I’m not going to beg.
You belong with me.
“Not if I see you first.”
I know.
Oh, I remember you driving to my house In the middle of the night.
Maeve snuck down her steps to the back door. She had a new understanding of how Bronwyn must feel when she sneaks Nate into the media room. Maeve pushed the back door open to see Luis standing in the door.
“Why in the world did you drive here in the middle of the night?”
“I broke up with Vanessa.” His voice sounded broken and vulnerable. She had never heard him like this.
Maeve didn’t say anything. She just ushered him into the house.
I'm the one who makes you laugh When you know you're 'bout to cry.
Maeve led Luis down to the media room where they sat side by side on the leather couch, Luis with his head in his hands. Maeve hesitantly rubbed her hand up and down his back.
“Sorry I just showed up.” He sounded like he was about to cry, and Maeve hated how sad he was.
“Do you think you get restaurant perks if you’re single?” Maeve asked thoughtfully as she rubbed his back. Luis snorted. “It was a serious question. But I’m glad I made you laugh.”
I know your favorite songs,
“What restaurant do you suggest I go to?” Luis asked, humoring her question.
Maeve thought about if for a moment. “Maybe that one on Elm Street. They play The Beatles. I’m sure if you went at the right time Eleanor Rigby would be playing.” Maeve glanced at him. “That is your favorite song right?”
“Yeah,” he muttered.
“Although it’s kind of sad. But oh well.”
Luis glanced at her. “Is music your only requirement for a restaurant?”
Maeve shrugged. “At least they’re not cooking beetles.”
Luis shook his head at her, a half smile teasing his lips.
And you tell me about your dreams.
“Did I tell you I want to own a restaurant?”
“You did.”
“I never told Vanessa.”
Maeve turned to him, touching his cheek gently to turn his face to hers.
“Vanessa doesn’t matter anymore Luis. Not really.”
Think I know where you belong,
“I know, but...”
“But what?” Maeve asked.
“But I feel like she still belongs in my thoughts, you know?”
“Sort of. You’re not going to move on from her in five minutes. It’ll take time.”
Luis nodded. “You’re pretty wise, you know that?”
Maeve made a face at him.
He plowed on. “Who belongs in your thoughts?”
Think I know it's with me.
You, Maeve wanted to say. She only shrugged. “I’m not sure yet.”
Can't you see That I'm the one Who understands you?
Luis smiled at her and sat up, putting an arm around the back of the couch. He still wanted her to lean against her shoulder, but she didn’t. “That’s totally fine, Maevey. You don’t have to spend all your time chasing after someone.”
Maeve snorted. “It’s like you can read my mind sometimes.”
“Nah, I just get you.”
Maeve met his eyes and smiled.
Been here all along. So, why can't you see
“You’ve understood me since we met.”
“Indeed I have, Rojas.”
You belong with me.
“Thanks for sitting with me Maeve, but I think I should head home. I don’t want you to get in trouble with your parents.”
Maeve shrugged. “After Nate and Bronwyn, my mom wouldn’t even bat an eye if I dated a serial killer. Not that I plan to.”
“No one plans to date a serial killer.”
Maeve shook her head. “My thoughts exactly.”
Standing by and waiting at your backdoor. All this time how could you not know, baby?
It took Maeve over an hour to find Luis’s house. Addy’s instructions sucked, but Luis gave her better ones after she asked if she could stop by. She parked her car in front of his house, and she looked down at her phone when it buzzed.
Come by the back
Maeve followed a pretty stone path to the backdoor and stood for a moment before he appeared.
“Hey,” he said, opening the door and stepping out.
“Hey back,” Maeve said. “I had a question for you.”
Luis smiled down at her. “Ask away, Maeve.”
“Wanna get lunch tomorrow. At the pizza place on Elm?”
“Maeve, are you asking me on a date?”
“Yes?”
You belong with me,
“Good, just making sure.”
“Is that a yes?”
“Yes Maeve, it’s a yes.”
You belong with me.
“Oh. Good.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow Maeve.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Maeve was about to turn away when Luis called her back. “Yeah?”
Luis gave her an odd look she couldn’t interpret, but it made her feel warm and happy. “Nothing. See you tomorrow.”
She could understand what he was trying to say loud and clear: thank you for asking.
You belong with me.
“See you tomorrow.”
Of course
Have you ever thought just maybe
The next day, Maeve and Luis ended up on the same bench as the day Vanessa yelled at them. They were talking about everything and nothing when suddenly Luis put his fingers under her chin and turned her head towards his.
“Hi,” he whispered. Can I kiss you?
“Hi back.” Please do.
That wasn’t Luis’s first kiss. Not by a long shot. But he thought, in that moment, that this kiss was the only one that mattered.
You belong with me?
“I love you Maeve Rojas.”
You belong with me.
“I love you too Luis Santos.”
You know when you’re excited for something and it makes everything else seem completely insignificant and that everything in moving in slow motion? That’s how my week went. By the time I got to Friday, the day I was leaving, it felt like it had been a year. Of course, Calum and I continued to take turns calling one another at ungodly times, but I was about to lose my mind. They weren’t kidding when they said time zones sucked. My flight leaves at five, and the clock on my computer at work said it was only noon. I dropped my head into my hands and sighed. Three more hours until Mikayla is taking me to the airport.
My eyes barely left the clock for those three hours. Sure, I got work done, but the bare minimum. Once it was finally time, I packed everything up and met Mikayla outside of my office. My heart was racing as I nearly ran to her car with Mikayla following close behind me and my suitcase already in the back. As Mikayla drove, we went over my check list. I had my plane ticket, I had the name of the person who was picking me up once I landed, and I had everything I needed for a week out of the country. The tour had taken them to Paris, so I was flying into the Orly airport since it was closer to their hotel. In my head I did the math again. The flight is ten hours, which means I will land there at three in the morning LA time. Paris is nine hours ahead of Los Angeles which means I will land at noon Paris time. Which, according to Michael was plenty of time before they had to leave the hotel to get to the venue. “You’re lucky, you’re flying in the one day we don’t have to leave the hotel early. By the way, if I don’t meet you in the lobby, Ashton will. He’s much more of a morning person than the rest of us,” He told me yesterday when we solidified the plan.
Mikayla dropped me off, hoping out of the car just long enough to help me grab my suitcase and give me a hug, telling me to have safe travels. It took very little time to check in and get my bag checked, probably the only good thing about taking a later flight. To keep my secret, and not have him call me while I was on a plane, or in the airport, I told him that I was hanging out with Mikayla tonight. I had told him that I had been feeling really lonely and needed someone to spend the night with me. He didn’t sound super thrilled about going a day without talking to me, but he agreed and understood. Before I headed to the gate my flight was leaving from, I stopped and got some food and some coffee. As I sat in the seat by the gate, I flicked my hair out of my face, and grabbed my phone.
My eyebrows pulled together when I saw a notification from social media from Calum. My finger swiped through my phone to find the origin of the notification. There was a picture of us while we were laying out in the sun, a picture I took, but he obviously stole. The caption saying “My girl” with a heart emoji at the end. My heart fluttered and I double tapped the post to like it, then left a comment saying “My man” with a heart next to it. After closing out of the app, I scrolled through some other apps and sipped on my coffee while I waited for the flight to board. My heart jumping out of my chest when they announced that it was time to board. Once I found my seat, which thankfully was by the window, I put my headphones on and began the playlist that was going to help me get through this ten hour flight.
Thankfully, I was able to sleep most of the flight. I was not ready to fight jetlag while I was here for only a week. I stared out the window as the plane started to descend quickly. I’ve always been that weird person that liked the feeling of their stomach jumping into their throat as the plane lands and pumps its brake, slowing as quickly as possible. It reminds me of a roller coaster as it suddenly comes to a screeching halt. The scenery around the airport was just like most airports, most of the city was off in the distance, but still visible. As the plane taxied to the gate, the pilot came over the intercom to announce the weather, and the time. All I cared about was I was finally in the same country as Calum, which meant I was just that much closer to being with him again.
I kept my headphones in my ears as I walked through the airport, following the signs for baggage claim. As soon as I found the carousel that the baggage was coming from, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone, plugging in all of the things I need for it to work internationally. Once it was up and running, I received a text message from Ashton saying “Michael’s not awake yet, but I forced Calum to have breakfast with me, so he’s awake. According to the flight schedule you should have landed. Can’t wait to see you!” Just as I was about to respond, the carousel started moving and the luggage came out.
Once I had my luggage, I followed the signs for passenger pick up and walked out, looking around for a gentleman named Carl holding a sign with my name on it. It didn’t take very long and once I found him and introduced myself to him, he smiled and took my bag from me. We walked together to the car where he generously put my suitcase in the back for me. Up until today, I had never been in a European car, so it was a bit interesting to have the steering wheel on the other side of the car. It was also slightly terrifying to drive on the other side of the road. As Carl drove, I pulled out my phone and shot Ashton a quick text message: “In the car with Carl, he said we should be there in about thirty minutes. See you soon!” A smile grew across my lips, one that I was sure I was not going to be able to erase until I saw Calum. Ashton texted back almost immediately: “I’ll be waiting!”
There were a couple of reasons I wanted to keep my arrival a secret. One, because I wanted to surprise Calum. Two, he has made it clear that we are together, which I think would make people show up at the hotel. Now, I’m not anything special, but I’m going to guess that’s what would happen. Since only Michael and Ashton, maybe they told Luke, I wasn’t sure, knew, there was no one waiting outside the hotel. It made the arrival way better than when I went with Calum to the airport in Los Angeles. Carl pulled up in front of the hotel and helped pull my bag out of the back. He bid me a goodbye and I walked through the front doors of the hotel. As I walked in, I found Ashton sitting in a chair by the window, his sunglasses on, and his phone in his hand. When he heard the sliding doors of the hotel open, he looked up, a smile spreading across his face once he saw me. As he stood up, he slid his phone into his pocket, then walked toward me, quickly closing the space between us. He stretched his arms out and wrapped them around my neck, pulling me in for a hug. “I’m glad you got here safely. Did you sleep on the plane?” I nodded into his chest and he pulled me back. “Good, that’s the best way to combat jetlag.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a card. “We’re only here one more night, but I figured you should have a key as well.”
As I took the key card from him, he motioned his head in the direction of the elevator. Ashton grabbed the handle of my suitcase and wheeled it behind him, “How did Calum feel about going to breakfast with you this morning?” I asked as he pressed the button to summon the elevator.
Ashton laughed and ran his hand through his hair. “He was very unhappy that I forced him to go eat with me, he repeated to me that he didn’t sleep well last night about thirty times. He said he was going to take a nap before we left this afternoon, but I kept texting him to make sure he was awake.” Ashton laughed and the elevator dinged and the doors opened, “He’s probably really annoyed with me right now.” I laughed along with Ashton as we stepped into the elevator. Ashton pressed the button for the floor we were headed to and the elevator doors closed. As it started to move, I looked down at my feet and tucked my hair behind my ear. As excited as I was to surprise Calum, the further the elevator traveled, the more nervous I was becoming. It’s been two and a half months since we’ve seen each other in person. How was he going to react?
The elevator came to a stop and Ashton grabbed my bag and started walking down the hallway. Soon, he stopped in front of a door and pointed at it. My heart was racing, but I nodded as if I was ready. Ashton knocked and then waited for a few seconds, leaning his right arm against the door frame. There wasn’t any noise coming from inside the room, and I suddenly felt horrible waking him up from his nap. Ashton tried knocking again, but again, there was nothing. With a slight eyeroll, Ashton pulled his phone out and called Calum, putting the call on speaker. “What is it, Ashton? I’m sleeping.” Calum’s voice was raspy, and I could tell that he indeed did not get much sleep.
“Come open the door, I found something in the lobby that I think you should see.” Ashton smiled a coy grin and raised his eyebrows.
Calum grumbled for a second, but finally said, “I’m coming.” Calum was way too nice to ever say no to Ashton, or anyone for that matter. Especially when it came to something they were excited about. My heart raced faster than it ever has. There were heavy footsteps on the other side of the door, then there was some fumbling noises with the locks. I held my breath as Calum opened the door. His eyes immediately landed on me, his eyes widening. There were no words spoken, just stares. He was wearing a white t-shirt and grey sweat pants, his hair was messy from sleeping. It was obvious he hadn’t found the energy to shower yet. I was still wearing the outfit I wore to work, and definitely needed a shower after sitting on a plane for ten hours.
I went to raise my hand to wave at Calum, but Calum immediately placed his hands on either side of my face, pulling my lips to his in a needy kiss. A fire ignited in the pit of my stomach and I pushed Calum into his hotel room, Ashton pushed my suitcase just inside the door before it shut in his face. Just as my fingers started to reach under his shirt, gently grazing his skin, he let go of my lips and let out a quiet groan. “How did you get here?” He asked while he discarded my blazer on the chair in the corner of the room. His lips reattaching to mine as he bent down and grabbed the back of my legs. Once his fingers grabbed my thighs, I followed his movements and wrapped my legs around his waist.
He carried me over to the bed and gently placed me on my back and disconnected our lips to pull his shirt over his head. “Michael helped me book a flight. I wanted to surprise you.” Once his shirt hit the floor, his lips found their way back to mine. As our lips moved together, his right hand moved under my shirt and over my stomach. It wasn’t until it started to trail upwards that I disconnected our lips to let out a pleasured sigh. While our lips were apart, he took the chance to pull my shirt over my head and tossed it to the side.
As if it were instinct, his lips found my neck. He lips were warm and plump against my skin, my bottom lips finding its way between my teeth. Suddenly, he came back up and met my eyes, a smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. “This is the best surprise I’ve ever gotten.” It wasn’t long until our bodies became one.
Calum’s breath was still labored, but was beginning to slow. His arms were wrapped around me, and our legs were intertwined. My head rested on his chest, my fingertips grazing his skin as I drew shapes absent mindedly. His eyes were closed, but every so often he would press a gentle kiss to the top of my head. After a while of laying in silence, he finally mumbled, “How long do I have you for?”
I lifted my head so I could see his face, and he opened an eye. “Seven whole days. My flight home is next Saturday night.” Calum smiled and opened his other eye before cupping my cheek with one hand and pressing a soft kiss to my lips. I repositioned my head and cuddled closer to Calum, his arms wrapping tighter around me.
We laid there for a while before Calum looked at the time and groaned. “I have to get ready. We’re leaving for the venue in an hour. You’re coming with us, right?”
I nodded against his chest, and then looked up at him. “I am glued to your side for the next seven days. Wherever you go, I go.”
“Good.” He said pressing a kiss to my nose, causing my heart to flutter. “Want to take a shower with me?” After I nodded, we untangled ourselves and headed into the bathroom together. After we got out of the shower, Calum got ready using the mirror in the room, allowing me to have the bathroom. It didn’t take him much time to get ready since he usually gets ready for the show at the venue. However, I barely got ready in time, running out the door seconds after turning off my flatiron. Calum beat me to the elevator, but shot me a soft smile as I moved my hair out of my mouth. He pressed a kiss to my forehead and tucked my hair behind my ear. “I’m so happy you’re here.”
After we stepped onto the elevator, I stood on my toes to press a kiss to Calum’s lips. “Me too.” When we made it to the lobby, the three boys were already waiting for us. Luke’s face when seeing me told me that the only two people who knew I was coming where Michael and Ashton. Luke wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tightly, telling me that it was “so great” to see me. Calum held onto my hand as we walked out of the hotel and to the car. He sat me on his right and put his arm around my shoulders after putting his backpack between his feet. As we drove toward the venue, the guys joked around, but I was too busy taking in the sights to join in the laughter.
Calum must have noticed how I was looking at everything we drove past, because he chuckled and kissed the side of my head before saying, “We’ll do some touring tomorrow since we have a day off.” I grinned at him and nodded.
When we got to the venue, there were already fans lining the sidewalk. Screams igniting as the car pulled into the lot by the backdoor of the venue. Once the car stopped, Calum popped open his door and hopped out, throwing his backpack over his left shoulder. He held the door open as I climbed out behind him. His hand pressed to my lower back as we walked into the venue together. Calum ushered me into their dressing room and then pointed to the couch that was pressed against the wall. As he dropped his backpack on the couch, I ran my hands up and down my thighs. “So, do you guys usually just hang out until show time?” Calum nodded and started to open his backpack. “Do you mind if I go walk around?”
“Do you want me to come with you?” Calum asked, turning away from his backpack.
“No, I’ll be back in a little bit, just going to waste sometime.” I smiled at him, walking backwards toward the door of the dressing room.
Calum nodded, “Okay, just text me if you need me. I’ll be here.” I nodded and headed out the door into a hallway that had a few people running through it, helping to get everything set up. I followed the hallway and found myself backstage. Trying my best to stay out of everyone’s way, I made my way onto the stage and sat down at the front. My legs hanging over the edge. For a minute I looked around, admiring the architecture of the venue, but then pulled my phone out of my pocket. Mikayla was always an early riser, so hopefully she was awake by now. Whatever, I wanted to call her even if she wasn’t.
“Emily! You made it alive I assume?” She sounded cheery and all around delightful.
I chuckled, “I did. Calum was surprised, spent a good time in the hotel room before we left for the venue. He said they have a day off tomorrow, so he is going to take me touring. I’m pretty excited.” My cheeks felt hot as I thought about how much I adored him, and how deeply I was falling for him.
“Have you told him yet?” Mikayla asked and my heart pounded.
“No.” I said feeling slightly ashamed. My pointer finger running down the bridge of my nose. “I just got here. I want it to be the right time, you know?” She hummed in response and then she changed the subject. We continued to talk about what we normally talk about. It wasn’t until I noticed people started to flow into the venue that I pushed myself off the stage and quickly made my way back down through the hallways towards the dressing room. Right before I opened the door, I hung up the phone and slid it back into my pocket. When I walked through the door, Calum had a red cup in his hand, he had changed and his hair was styled.
I couldn’t take my eyes off him. His smile grew across his face as he walked towards me, wrapping his arm around my shoulder, then pressing a soft kiss to my lips. “I love being able to kiss you before a show.” He sat his drink on the table next to us and tucked my hair behind my ear, his cold fingers causing my hairs to stand on end. His lips pressed against mine, my hands balling his shirt into my fists. He smiled against my lips and he couldn’t help but chuckle. “Maybe I shouldn’t kiss you, might get myself too worked up.” I let out a chuckle as well and pulled away from him. Biting my lip and rubbing my hand up and down my arm. Just as we let go of each other, Michael pulled Calum away as they started their pre-show routine.
The show director opened the door and pulled the guys to the stage. Calum grabbed my hand and intertwined his fingers with mine. He let go of my hand so he could put his bass over his shoulder, pushing it to his back so he could put his in-ear monitors into his ear. The count down for them to get on the stage started and he grabbed my face and planted a hasty kiss to my lips. After he pulled away and the countdown ended, I wished him good luck and he walked up the stairs and onto the stage. I made sure I was the last one to stand in the wing of the stage, but able to watch him, every once in a while catching a wink from him. Watching him perform made my heart flutter. I chewed on my bottom lip and looked down at my feet, it was starting to hurt holding in how much I loved him.
Akatsuki Halloween Special Masterlist
You slammed the car door shut, earning a startled glance from the man waiting in the driver’s seat. After a long moment of staring ahead at the many vehicles passing by, your anger subsided enough to face your companion. He laughed and started the engine, a wry smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as the car pulled out of the gas station’s lot. With an exaggerated huff, you rolled your eyes and shuffled in your seat, getting comfortable for the ride home.
“Calmed down yet?”
“Piss off, Kisame.”
“It’s just because they think you’re so cute.”
“I’m not cute and I don’t want creeps looking at me!”
“You’re a showstopper. Even a gentleman like me can’t take my eyes off you.”
“You’re not helping!”
“Alright, alright, no need to turn your wrath onto little ol’ me.” He threw one hand up in mock defeat but his voice held nothing but amusement, an airy laugh on his lips as he continued his teasing, “As they say, Hell hath no fury like-”
“Hah! I’ll show you fury!”
“Just when I was going to offer to go back and kick some ass for you. It might be more effective just to set you loose on them.”
“You should be more worried about yourself at this point, buddy.”
The playful bickering continued even when the car came to a halt, stuck amidst a traffic jam. This type of fun atmosphere was second nature when it came to Kisame. You two had known each other for so long that ruthless teasing and sarcastic remarks were the only acceptable form of greeting. It was just another Saturday afternoon, just a normal conversation between friends. Friends. That was the part that left you feeling empty. You wanted to be more than friends - you had since college - but whenever you were single, he wasn’t. It was always bad timing (at least that’s what you had told yourself) yet here you both were, single and ready to mingle but, for some reason, not dating each other. It had caused you many restless nights.
“Earth to the airhead, we were having a conversation here,” he sighed, frowning as he gazed at you from the corner of his eyes. “What’s wrong? Am I boring you?”
“It’s nothing. Sorry I zoned out.”
“Come on, I know you. Don’t lie to me,” he whispered just loud enough to be heard above the hum of the hundreds of engines purring around us as we all waited for the congestion to ease up and traffic to flow unhindered once more.
“I’m just… conflicted. I have all these emotions brewing in me. There’s a storm raging within and it’s uncontrollable and insatiable and terrifying and I’ve become overwhelmed by it! There’s something, or rather, someone I want but I shouldn’t pursue. It just…” you trailed off, frustration ebbing away at your sensibility, urging you to throw caution to the wind. “It just isn’t fair, Kisame!”
“What do you want? Tell me, maybe I can help,” he smiled, his tone as kind and gentle as always.
“We’ve known each other a long time, yeah?”
“Duh.”
“Then-” you turned in your seat to face him, “-why haven’t you ever made a move on me?”
He blinked at you twice, the words not computing in his mind, before chuckling, the sound deep and hearty, “You’re hilarious. I thought you were being serious.”
“Am I not making my intentions obvious enough? Are you not picking up what I’m putting down?”
“Wait, you’re not joking?”
“I’m cute and sweet and friendly in public, just as anyone would want. Modest, honest, intelligent… and I’m interesting! Not to mention, my body is amazing! Remember that time you walked in on me changing? I looked sexy as all hell, right?!”
“I, uh, I don’t- no, I haven’t- it’s not, not-”
“Maybe I’m not your type. I’ve never felt that I was much different from the people you've dated, though,” you mumbled, your fingers scratching your collarbone as you continued, ignoring his flabbergasted stammering and incoherent stuttering, “It could be in the little things, I suppose. As roommates, you already have a sense of who I truly am, not the facade I present to strangers. That would make sense. That’s where most of my relationships end, now that I’m thinking about it.”
“Don’t be so rough on yourself!” He managed to calm his racing thoughts long enough to shout the words, his sudden exclamation reminding you of a drunk phone call you had with his last ex.
“From what I’ve been told, we would be sexually compatible. You know, I’m a bit of a freak in the sheets, an absolute sinner, but so are you!”
“What?!”
“Now, I’m not one to bow down and accept commands from just anyone, but I think I can manage if it’s you… I’d have no objections submitting to you. Well, not many. I mean, just look at you and that body of yours. You could toss me down on the bed and tell me to undress and I wouldn’t hesitate. I’d say, ‘yes, sir, and the panties too?’ You don’t know how many times I’ve imagined it. Those big hands of yours exploring my body, groping my breasts and pinching my nipples until I whimper. Your mouth on my body as you nip and suck on my skin a little too harshly, leaving bruises and marking my body as yours,” you murmured, your eyes distant as you recounted your fantasies, your fingertips massaging the soft flesh of your inner thigh absentmindedly. “Just thinking about it makes me wet and I haven’t even gotten to the sex yet.”
Lost in your own dream world, you didn't realise how red Kisame had gotten. His eyes were trained on the road, awaiting even the slightest movement in hopes of escaping the traffic jam. His silent prayers went unanswered; they weren’t making it home any time soon and that sweet rush of burning desire that settled in his groin and begged for acknowledgement would have to be ignored to the best of his abilities. He scrunched his nose and closed his eyes in concentration, hands turning pale as he gripped the steering wheel with a little too much force. It wasn’t until you heard him muttering under his breath that you snapped back to reality.
“Sorry. I made you uncomfortable.”
“That’s… that’s not it. I’ve just never imagined you as the submissive type.” As soon as the words left his mouth, his eyes widened and a bead of sweat rolled down his cheek.
A mischievous grin crossed your features as you leaned over and propped your elbows onto the middle console armrest, the tension in the car rising as you purred, “Oh? So you’ve thought about me that way before. Is that how I’m different from the others? You’re willing to switch?”
He avoided your prying gaze, his voice shaking as he asked, “What do you mean?”
You heard his breath catch in his throat as you leaned in closer, your tongue dancing across your lips as you whispered into his ear, “Have you ever wondered what I looked like in leather with a whip in one hand and handcuffs in the other? Or maybe you like the more subtle domination... a fancy business suit and six inch heels with a no-bullshit attitude, my voice dictating your every movement. Would you like to see me take charge, to command you? Want me to call you a good boy?”
“It seems the traffic is clearing up ahead, we should be able to move soon!”
“No, it’s not.”
“Sure it is!”
“Have you ever had sex in a car, Kisame?”
“We’ll be home in no time!”
“Answer me,” your eyes darkened as your tone dropped, your words cold. “Answer me now, Kisame.”
“No, I, uh, haven’t. It isn’t safe to, you know, do it while you’re driving. Pretty sure it’s illegal even when you’re parked, so that’s definitely a bad-”
“Stop talking.” Your words were sharp enough to stop him mid-sentence, his blush deepening as he witnessed the sweet girl he knew transform into the woman he spent too many nights lusting over. “Touch yourself.”
Objections rested on the tip of his tongue, threatening to challenge your authority, before he decided against speaking. Old habits die hard but he wasn’t going to risk receiving a punishment, not when in clear view of the many other drivers parked and waiting to continue their commute.
He hadn’t expected you to do this inside of the car, though he wasn’t complaining. He couldn’t deny that he had wondered about this side of you ever since his ex spilled the beans after that drunken phone call. You were so happy-go-lucky so the idea of some wild, sadist side seemed farfetched, but he couldn’t shake it from his mind. Now the chance to experience it firsthand had arrived and he found himself growing weaker, the temptation overwhelming him. He had never thought of himself as a masochist, never thought he would submit to anyone, but today was a day of surprises.
Taking a deep breath, he stared into your eyes, watching as they softened. Sensing your resolve wavering, he unzipped his pants and pulled them down, exposing his hardening length beneath his tight boxer-briefs. Your gaze was heavy with approval and appreciation, and he felt like a teenaged boy once more as he averted his eyes, his face bright crimson. Slipping his hand under the soft cloth, he began to stroke himself until a sudden sting blossomed across the back of his hand.
“Not yet. Do it over the top of the boxers and do it slower until I say otherwise-” His eyes snapped open as your delicate hand gripped his chin, forcing him to face you once more, “-and don’t you dare look away. I want to watch you crumble before me.”
FICTOBER 2020 - day four
Prompt #4: “That didn’t stop you before.”
Fandom: Spider-Man (Tom Holland Movies)
Characters: May Parker, Tony Stark, Peter Parker (mentioned)
Words: 1809
Author’s Note: May and Tony will get along one day, but it’s going to be a rough ride, and neither of them are going to like the journey. Set immediately post HOCO, May POV. Possibly the first in a series.
>> eight feet and we started on the wrong one
It takes May two-and-a-half hours to drive from her apartment in Queens to the new Avengers facility in Upstate.
Spider-Man’s suit—Peter’s suit—sits hidden in a brown paper bag in the passenger’s seat, looking for all the world like one of the packed lunches Ben would make for Peter in elementary school. Peter’s old enough that he can make his own lunches now, though, so he hasn’t had one since—since.
Ben would be disappointed in her if he knew.
Peter’s still at home, both because he’s very, very grounded, and because she’s about to have a conversation she doesn’t want him anywhere near. Super hearing is apparently among her nephew’s multitude of powers, and considering he’d claimed to hear a heartbeat from across the room, she’s pretty sure there’s not building in all of New York large enough to give her the privacy she needs.
She’s going to be much, much louder than a heartbeat.
The Compound looms in the distance, and she does her best to feel as unflappable as she looks as she approaches the security entrance.
Two-and-a-half hours had felt like a lot of time when she’d pulled the address up on Maps, but all she’s conjured in terms of an attack plan is a losing battle between righteous anger and overwhelming guilt.
She pulls to a stop in front of the tall metal gates, hyper aware of all the doubtlessly lethal security that’s surrounding her. There’s a moment of silence, then a bored voice broadcasts over one of the speakers.
“This facility is for Avengers or cleared personnel only. Please present a valid ID or contact our PR representative to state your business—”
May pulls the suit out of the bag and lets it unfurl out the window, making sure the red and blue spandex is in plain view of the cameras.
She waits.
The intercom crackles back to life, and a new, much more cautious voice addresses her. “…Thank you for coming, Ms. Parker. Your security clearance has been added to the system. Please proceed to the front entrance where Mr. Hogan can assist you—”
“Stark,” May says. The knuckles on her right hand turn white against the steering wheel. “Mr. Stark will be meeting with me.”
Another long, drawn out pause. Then a third voice enters the mix, and this time, she’s able to identify the perpetually-confident speaker on the other side.
“Thanks for stopping by, May. I’d be happy to meet with you.”
May squashes down the thrill of anxiety and rage that fills her at the sound of him as the first voice takes back over.
“Please proceed through the gate down the center lane. At the first fork in the road, turn left. This will lead you directly to the Avengers parking deck, where you will park on row E and take the south elevator to floor 7. An employee will meet you in the landing area to take you to Mr. Stark’s office.”
“Thank you,” May says, cheerfully, as if she’s given entry instructions to highly secured bases every day.
She can’t afford to appear nervous, so she aims for unconcerned—even if it makes her look a little ditzy.
Being underestimated is always an advantage.
The red lasers crossing the path blink twice before disappearing altogether, and then the heavy steel gates swing open at a belabored pace.
She pulls the suit back into the car and drives forward. In the privacy of her own thoughts, she tries not to dwell on how she’s just earned herself a one-on-one with arguably the most powerful man in the world.
(The most powerful man in the world who’s had near total access to her kid for the last two months, who offered to have him live somewhere else, who was going to tell the whole world his secret before he told her—)
Her stomach twists angrily.
(At least, she tells herself it’s anger.)
She drives into the deck and parks the car.
The suit is still lying in the passenger’s seat. May considers it, then carefully folds it back up and slips it into the bag. Then she steps out of the car and locks the door, leaving it inside.
It may have been Stark technology, but it was Parker property now.
The woman that meets her inside the building doesn’t say much, spending most of their shared time scanning her past enough security to let May know there was no way of getting in or out without their approval. She’s not sure if it’s an intimidation tactic or just the way things work here.
She adds it to the list of the many things she doesn’t know, and sits down in a chair outside of Tony Stark’s office to wait.
The conversation between her and Peter had been a very, very long one, and a very, very emotional one. She hasn’t processed any of it yet, because every time she tries, her brain stalls out on the fact that Peter’s story has enough holes in it to masquerade as one of Ben’s old socks. In fact, the only thing consistently more disturbing than all the danger he’d been in was all the times he couldn’t tell her why he was in danger to begin with.
The man at the desk hangs up the phone and waves in her direction. “Mr. Stark will see you now, Ms. Parker.”
“Mrs. Parker,” May says, because it hasn’t even been a year yet.
The secretary doesn’t seem to care either way, but the finer points of naming etiquette aren’t why May’s here anyway.
It’s time to get some answers.
Stark practically leaps out of his chair when she walks in, radiating enough charm to power a small light show, but with a clear undercurrent of nerves that belies his confidence.
“Well, if it isn’t May Parker,” he says, entirely smiles, “looking as fine as ever.”
Just like that, the anxiety she’s been masking as anger all day morphs into nothing but pure anger.
“What the hell, Stark.”
It’s not the careful or naive approach she’d originally envisioned, and his jovial expression vanishes as quickly as her goodwill had. “Now wait, I know you’re a little upset, but—”
“A little upset?”
“Okay, a lot upset,” he concedes. “That’s just ‘cause it’s a lot to take in, but if we just take a minute—”
“Stark,” May interrupts, her fists curling tight enough to dig crescent moons into her skin, “it’s not a lot to take in because I don’t have anything yet.”
Stark blinks. “You don’t—you talked to the kid, right? That’s how you got the suit?”
It’s the genuine confusion that riles May—that Stark hasn’t even considered how little he’s told Peter, and therefore, how little Peter could’ve told her.
“I talked to Peter,” she says, and Stark’s eyes narrow further, “and he said he fought Captain America. Couldn’t say why.”
It’s a low blow—most of the chatter on the Avengers’ split agrees that the falling out was mostly between its two heads—but May’s already at a disadvantage, and she can’t afford to play fair on a field that’s not level.
Stark stares at her, but May doesn’t make a move. Then he walks back behind his desk, and sits in the chair, propping his feet up. “What happened between me and Cap was personal, May.”
“I don’t care about your bro fight, Tony.” If he’s going to call her by her first name, then she should return in kind. “It’s none of my business, because I’m not involved. And Peter wasn’t, either, until you dragged him into it.”
Stark has the decency to grimace. “We hadn’t escalated anything at that point, I swear. Peter was never in danger—”
“It’d escalated to the point where you were so scared you thought recruiting a fourteen-year-old boy you’d never met was a good option.”
Stark looks away at that. “Look, maybe I rushed it a little. But Pete’s a good kid, and he was gonna get involved in bigger stuff one way or another. Did you not see that little onesie he was running around in? Before I got to him? I’m protecting him.”
(Like you didn’t.)
“Yeah?” May snaps. “So what else have you done? Did you have him sign the Accords? Is there some pencil pushing government official that knows more about my kid than I do?”
“No, he’s just a minor—”
“Oh, you care about him being a minor now,” May says. “‘Cause that didn’t stop you before.”
Tony’s eyes flash. "Listen, honey—”
“Don’t call me that.”
“—it’s real rich of you to play the concerned aunt when you didn’t bat an eye at my asking him to come along in the first place. You’re the one that let your kid fly to Germany for a scholarship you never looked twice at—”
“How dare you assume what I looked at—”
“—and you’re the one that consented to let me talk to him in the first place—”
“So you agree that asking to talk to a minor, alone, about highly confidential information was way out of line?”
“—and you’re the super involved aunt that’s decided for some reason to just ignore all your kid’s weird behavior for the past six months, including but not limited to sneaking out of the house at all hours, dropping almost all of his extracurriculars, consistently lying about his location, and—”
“His uncle died!”
Her outburst stops his tirade in its tracks, but it’s not the silver bullet she wanted, because it’s too vulnerable; too close. And she knows she’s treading dangerous ground, knows she shouldn’t continue when the balance of power is so strongly weighted against her, but now that she’s started, she can’t stop.
“His uncle died, and he thinks it was his fault,” she says. “And hell, what do I know. Maybe it really was. But that is not the kind of mindset that prepares anyone, let alone a fourteen-year-old boy, to make informed decisions about who he trusts. Maybe we got really lucky this time, and you really are that great for him. ‘Cause as you’ve so eloquently proven, I clearly wasn’t.”
May pauses, taking in a breath, while Tony shifts uncomfortably. But he doesn’t try to interrupt.
"So what happens,” she finally says, “the next time some guy comes along with a nice smile and a cool costume, and tells him it’s totally okay to lie to the people responsible for him.”
Tony watches her for a moment, and she watches him right back. He reaches over and flicks the Newton’s Cradle on his desk into motion, then sighs.
“Yeah, okay,” he says. “Fair enough.”
He gestures towards the chair opposite him, and this time, May accepts it.
He clears his throat. “So what do you want from me.”
“The truth,” May says, unflinchingly. “All of it.”
“Okay.”
