did you hear about the tanzanian chimp frodo? what's your take in all this?
Frodo was an interesting chimp! He was one of the first chimpanzees to have his entire life recorded while still remaining in the wild. Most people know Frodo for being big and strong, and becoming alpha of his troupe through force, forcing his brother Freud into exile for several months. When Freud returned he did so without attempting to reclaim his status, and lived peacefully. As such, Frodo was alpha from 1997 until 2002 when he became sick and was thus no longer the most physically powerful chimp.
While some alphas are known for being politically savvy and kind, Frodo was known for ruling by force and being aggressive to human and chimp alike. He was a bully, used to getting his way, and being huge and strong meant that other chimps would give in to him. It was even observed that chimps would stop playing when they saw him as they feared he would inadvertantly hurt them if he were to join in rough housing.
At the risk of anthropomorphizing him, Frodo stands to me as an example that some people (or chimps) are just kind of jerks. Being strong and aggressive can be a great survival skill, but when Frodo got sick he could no longer rely on being big and strong. This may suggest that the best mix of traits is enough aggression and strength to use if needed, and the compassion and sociability to create strong bonds and alliances to back it up.
Basically, I think he was pretty cool. Even if he never learned to play nice, I cannot deny that he was big, and dare I say, strong! Rest in peace legend ❤️
