I’m sorry but the flat way that the fandom tackles the Enji Todoroki problem is so blegh. Yes, how he treated them (especially Shouto—we don’t 100% know if Touya’s training was the same, especially because he actually liked his training) was wrong, the way he treated his wife was wrong, the way he ignored his other kids is wrong. HOWEVER, him cutting Touya off from training was NOT 100% wrong. Should he have treated it more delicately? Yes. Should he have been more considerate to his kid? Yes. Should he have gotten him some kind of therapy to help him cope with his obvious mental issues? Also yes. But cutting him off from training when he gets hurt doing so and it’s unavoidable is NOT wrong. He was trying to prevent exactly what happened in the end. Maybe he could have revisited it a few years later when training isn’t all Touya is and looked into support items, idk, but Enji’s approach was the right decision in the wrong way.

i believe he'd be rather indifferent toward them as a whole. he finds them annoying when they're small but would never go out of his way to actively cause a child harm. they're just... there. he doesn't really know what he'd do if he was forced to interact with one.

maybe part of his instinctive disdain stems from the fact that seeing a sad child makes him angry, and seeing a happy one makes his heart sting with envy. ultimately though, there's a certain kind of longing there - his heart would go soft at the sight of a mother hugging her son, if he allowed it to. so just to satisfy all of our heartbroken!touya needs here:

imagine him around 18 years old, squatting at an abandoned building in a less busy area of town. he's hungry, scared - hasn't gotten proper sleep in a while. some kid is crying outside and he attempts to suffocate the noise with a pillow over his head, but it's so irritating, and the boy's voice reminds him of what his own used to sound like. he wants to go outside to find the little menace and grab him by the throat. touya's face should be enough to scare the fucker shitless, after all.

what he doesn't expect to find is a white-haired, early middle schooler, no older than 10 years and about what he remembers to be natsuo's height. god, natsuo - he must have grown so much by now, touya thinks.

there's no way he's gonna lift a finger against this kid. so instead, he pulls his hood over the bottom half of his face and goes over to him. "s dangerous alone, you shouldn't be here," he says, more to himself than to the boy who's got snot bubbles under his nose. his cheeks are puffy and red and he doesn't wanna talk, so touya groans and pulls him by the sleeve. where's a hero when you need one? the nearest police station is almost a kilometer away, but touya takes him there and makes sure to glare daggers at any hero he passes. they don't even notice that he's basically abducting this crying kid that's way too old to be his own. he plans to stay behind the corner until the boy has safely made his way inside, but the kid breaks into a sprint and falls in the arms of an equally snotty, crying woman out front. they're hugging and she's kissing her baby boy's face all over before pulling him back into her chest, squeezing him so tightly that touya's heart weighs heavy in his chest and doesn't let him breathe for a moment.

touya shouldn't look, but he can't bear to tear his eyes away. this is it. a taste of what his life as a hero could've been.

the answer is yes, of course she does! it’s mentioned in part two of the main series, but it’s one of the reasons why he doesn’t like doing drugs in front of her; in addition to fearing that they’ll taint his precious, innocent, pure lil baby sister, he also cannot stand the way she looks at him—not only that she’s scared of him, but that she’s scared for him, that she is pitying him, disappointed in him, upset over the whole thing in general, that he’s doing drugs at all, no matter the reason why.

it does hurt, and her feeling kind of inadequate compared to the drugs is a small part of it, but a lot of the pain she feels regarding his drug use in such situations more comes from the fact that he needs these drugs to comfort himself in the first place; that he relies on them so heavily and uses them as such a sturdy crutch because he feels like he has to, because nothing—not even her love and her presence—is nearly strong enough to quell and calm whatever panic he’s feeling. tnii’s reader is quite selfless, and she worries about touya + puts touya first before herself literally all of the time.

but to answer your question, yes, definitely, even if it isn’t the primary source of hurt. no matter how gracious and selfless and compassionate she is, she can’t deny the tiny but unmistakable twinge she feels behind her ribs when she’s reminded that she just isn’t enough to diminish his pain in these situations. but the thing is, it doesn’t come from a place of selfishness, it comes from a place of being upset over her insufficiency because he’s just in that much pain. does that make sense?

in other words, she isn’t like ‘aw man i’m so upset that i’m not enough to help him, full stop’ ; she’s like ‘aw man i’m so upset that his pain is so immense and runs so deep that not even i am enough to help him and he needs something stronger, something literally mind altering, to deal with it’.
