Happy 2022, everyone!

I can't exactly say I look forward to being forced to use Ninpo as an alternative energy source because of certain economy-related internet technology completely fucking us over so that art thieves, corporations, and stupid people can make money, but hey! That's (maybe) September Tsuki's problem for when he's gotta liveblog Kamen Rider Shinobi! Anyhow, it's been a couple of weeks, but it's Revice time!

I just assumed he was some guy the casting department pulled off the streets, but he's Japanese comedian Ayumu Kato, who some of you may remember as the "Impossibru" meme guy. I never found it very funny myself, even in my less aware days, but it's aged even more poorly than a lot of things from the dark age of memes that was the early 2010s, and if I were Kato-san, I'd probably just duck out of the media entirely.

-Burning in the flames of hell like a true demon. And for such a noble cause too.

So this is my first time publicly sharing my writings and I'm really nervous and also kind of excited. Please bear with me, English isn't my first language however I do try to do my best in my works. Anywhos here's my first post I hope you guy enjoy!

•raised by his grandmother who he loves to pieces

•don't tell anyone but grandma choi actually raised him muggle style so he's very knowledgable when it comes to them

•his one and only friend is soobin, that is of course before he met the three other boys

•the sorting hat barely even touched his head before it announced "slytherin"

•worked his way up until he became what he is today

•his goal is to erase the stigma of slytherins being evil

•intimidates everyone with his sharp eyes and blank face but don't be fooled, he's as extra and wild as the others

•once dared himself to wrestle with the black lake's giant squid

•always aims to be the best at everything, probably to the point of overworking himself

•as a first year flying had come naturally to him and easily became his favourite subject but was soon replaced by defence against the dark arts

•the boy is a quick thinker and could disarm his opponent in a matter of seconds, though he is good at casting other spells he opts for a defensive style of duelling

•ever since he was young he dreamt of being an auror

•the team captain of slytherin's quidditch team, his swiftness and agility earned him the title "best chaser"

•the boys are just really thankful for soobin existance and love him so much

•bc of this the sorting hat actually took longer to sort him than usual wondering whether it should put him in slytherin or gryffindor, he had almost been a hatstall but after a silent debate between the two beomgyu had chosen gryffindor bc they had and i quote 'pretty colours'

•had to be physically restrained by soobin and yeonjun after he tried to fight a student who had called taehyun a "mudblood"

•Charms and transfiguration are his areas of expertise

•favourite spell is "accio" and practically uses it for everything

•is currently grooming kai to become a prankster like him, he just has to figure out a way to stop the boy from being so goddamn loud everytime they prank someone

For all the jokes I see about feminists (and, frankly, anybody left-of-center) not having a sense of humor, I don't see much in the way of conservative humor. There's Anne Coulter, "Roseanne", Milo Yiannopoulos (I think), and...well, I'm not sure. A lot of it seems to not translate well, but when pressed, I've only been told I'm too stupid to understand it.

First off: you’re not stupid. They’re mean. If someone tells you you’re too stupid to understand something, they are a jerk and you have the right to ignore them.

Now that that’s out of the way…. 

Conservative humour is all about punching down and conformity. Like a lot of things that are part of conservative culture, it is very focused on keeping ingroup cohesion over most other values. Like, say, ‘kindness’ or ‘curiosity’. 

So conservative ‘humour’ - what little I’ve seen of it; mostly National Review columnists who were trying to be Funny About The Disk Horse, minion memes, and crap from the alt-right really- is mostly about saying “we are not like these other people, you know, the shitty ones.”

People come together more easily when they have some shared dislike. A good example of this (...that’s not likely to be controversial on the hellsite) is Straight People Performatively Bitching About Their Spouses. The straight people who keep going “ach, [my spouse’s gender] must be a whole nother species, can you believe they [do gendered stereotypes] and [do things I don’t like]??” mostly don’t hate their spouse, but it’s a way to maintain ingroup cohesion with their other straight same-gendered friends. I’m a [gender], you’re a [gender]. Our spouses are not a [gender], therefore they’re weird and alien and not like us. 

 It keeps everyone in the ingroup close (because they dislike the same thing) and keeps people from the outgroup out (because they like or are the thing you dislike).  I’m Like You, You’re Like Me. Those Other People, the ones who Do The Thing, they’re Not Like Us, so we’ll make fun of them.  It’s a form of bonding, like monkeys picking flies off each other. 

Conservative humour is making fun of liberal arts students who didn’t get a ‘real’ job, or Those People who sag their pants and talk funny, or people who are scared of guns, because they’re part of the outgroup, they’re Not Like Us. It’s making fun of “liberal hypocrisy” or a self-proclaimed feminist having a meltdown in public because liberals have to be crazy to believe the things they believe; they’re Not Like Us. It’s making fun of gay people and GNC people for doing gender “wrong”, because They’re Not Like Us. It’s making fun of literal fucking children for doing something ‘liberal’ their teacher or their parents roped them into, because They’re Not Like Us.  

It’s being deliberately mean for the sake of mean- or in the case of the meme-y part of the alt-right, being deliberately gross for the sake of gross- to bring the group together and keep other people out. 

Feminists and liberals “don’t have a sense of humour” because they’re not willing to indulge in the conservative kind of “funny” mean for the sake of mean. (Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of that on the lefty side of the fence- ‘male tears’, anyone?- but in general feminists are not fond of sexist/racist/homophobic humour, even if they’re normally part of what would otherwise be the conservative ingroup.) They’re willing to call that shit out, and usually the first thing they say is ‘that’s not funny’. 

“Liberals have no sense of humour” is code for “liberals are part of the outgroup.” “They’re not willing to believe that making fun of people like them is funny, therefore they’re Not Like Us. And that means we’ll make fun of them even more for it.”

I'm not too into the issue and I don't know the whole story of both sides, but I heard that Felix blurred the line between offense and humor enough to face consequences. Oof. This whole shit show. This is something I’ve wanted to bring up many many times, but chose not to. Mostly because I don’t know the entire story myself (though I’ve seen Philip Defranco talk about it on his show), and because I know what usually happens from talking about stuff like this nowadays.  But, here we are, and I’ll try not to ramble on for too long.

I seem to live in a fascinating reality where freedom of speech is both encouraged, and is the unpopular opinion. Simply put, if your opinion doesn’t fit squarely into someone else’s views and opinions, there’s a good chance they’ll do everything they can to silence you, and try to convince others to do the same. 

I suppose what really confuses me the most is why people are making such a big deal out of a shock humor joke that went a little too far. If you stop and think about it, how is this any different from what other comedians do when they try to push the boundaries? Hell, how is this any different from what shock humor shows like South Park, Family Guy, or even the Simpsons do? George Carlin once said that it’s possible to make anything funny, and on some level, I agree with him. With that being said, that doesn’t mean every kind of humor can be executed well, and people aren’t going to find everything funny. Comedy is as subjective as art, and it’s up to you to decide if it’s something you want to support, or ignore.

So yeah, if you already couldn’t tell where I’m going, I’m of the opinion that Pewdiepie is getting more crap over this than he actually deserves. He made a stupid joke. A joke that he’s been apologizing for, and even he himself acknowledges went too far. If this were anyone else, that would be the end of it. And yet, there have been people, from the every person to the news outlets(I’m lookin at you, WSJ), who have been completely blowing this out of proportions, to the point of cherry-picking information and handling everything about this story so poorly just to sell you a narritive. Because that’s how much power words can have, and why it’s so dangerous to spread misinformation. Regardless of what you think about publicity, the right kind of publicity can destroy lives, and we’re seeing an attempt at that here with Pewdiepie. Even worse, is this mentality that if you have this kind of opinion, there are those who think it’s okay to send that kind of hate towards you. Just looks at what’s been happening with Markiplier and JackScepticEye. A lot of what they’ve been saying is some of the same things I’ve been saying. That Pewdiepie made a bad joke and should be held accountable for that, but isn’t deserving of all of the labels and hate he’s been getting. Even though Mark and Jack know far more about what’s been happening, it doesn’t matter because they’ve been getting the same level of negativity as Pewdiepie has. By speaking out, by association ALONE, that gives some people enough justification to throw a negative label on you. Just for the crime of saying “maybe you guys are taking this too far”, or any kind of dissenting opinion.

My thoughts on the joke in question is it’s not funny. Does that mean Pewdiepie  did something worthy of hate or death threats? Hell. NO. Really, I think the worst thing about the joke is the timing. Sometimes what makes a joke offensive as a whole is when the joke was said. Remember when Gilbert Gottfried made a tsunami joke (which he’s long since apologized for) right after the Tsunami that happened in Japan a few years back? If I’m not mistaken, that’s what got him fired from working with Aflac. And yet to this day, I still don’t hear people complaining about it or trying to label him a racist or a monster after the fact. Sound familiar? Whether the news or anyone else acknowledges it or not, we’re kind of living in a modern day equivalent to the Salem Witch Trials - the Red Scare if you want something a little closer to recent memory. Rather than accusing people of being witches or communists, the accusation is racist, white supremacist, nazi, whatever socially taboo label you want to throw around. And I’ve seen these kinds of words thrown around everywhere - to the point where it’s borderline comical to see how people are using those words.

I think that’s about everything I have to say. You don’t have to find a joke funny, but at the same time, you don’t need to lie or threaten someone about it. Talk about it. Discuss it with others. If the joke is that much of a problem, then speak your concern. But for the love of god, don’t think that gives you the right to throw a tantrum and spew hate at anyone who disagrees with you.

  Before I close things up, I want to leave a link to an interesting clip I found from a show called Duckman, in which the main character also comments about his views on comedy. My hopes at the moment is everyone eventually moves on. I already have, because I’m not going to let one bad joke ruin everything else for me.
