Okay so I thought since Ostara is just past I might do some gardening posts since I'm doing that with the woolies things at the moment. Honestly its kinda great for people who don't have too much time on their hands because it's so easy to do. Also that expanding dirt is so dope I love it 😂
First I'm gonna start with dill.
Dill can help lower cholesterol as well as aiding with loss of appetite and digestion issues. It can be used when you have a cold, fever, sore throat/cough, bronchitis and infections.
You can find it in pill form in health food shops (Haha, dill pills) or also as a dried herb, or a fresh herb/plant. Fresh is best, as usual with this sort if thing. Nutritional value decreases over time, but dried is still beneficial.
Dill has a taste similar to licorice, if the plant has "bolted" (been allowed to produce proper flowers" the end result will be more bitter. I've heard that one good way to use it is to make a vodka infusion with it (preserves the herb and I mean if you like alcohol there's reason enough 😂) which you can then put in your drinks incrementally. I haven't used this one much personally, but I'm going to be growing it so I'll probably be able to give a more comprehensive explanation on it's uses in future 😊
As for growing it, here's what I've learned so far:
Disclaimer, all this information I've gathered is for my weather zone, so it won't help if your weather is too different. The main 2 seem to be are "Mild summer and harsh winter" or "harsh summer and mild winter". We don't get snow where I am in winter, and it doesn't really get anywhere near as cold as a lot of places so it's a mild winter. Our summers, however, oh my.... there's worse, obviously, but that would be a level above harsh, like extreme or something.
Dill is best grown in hot weather. This means you want to sow them late spring and have them indoors until after the last frost of spring. Now, depending where you live you'll probably have to search online to see when that is for your area. Should be able to type "predicted frost dates for _____(your town/city)_____" into Google and it'll pop up. Do not transplant your seedlings outside until youre sure the last frost has been. At this point you want to be watering your plants consistently, but dont let the soil get too wet. By the time time your dill reaches maturity you wanna make sure they're at least 10-12" ("= inches for us metric users. It'd be about 25-28cm) apart. At this point your soil should be allowed to dry out almost completelybetween watering sessions. Growing dill near cabbages or fruit trees/bushes can be mutually beneficial, but you should avoid keeping carrots or fennel near dill.
Dill re-seeds itself quite well so it might be worth planting somewhere it can be free to grow for a couple of years rather than just seasonally.
That's about all I have to say on this one for now, but I'll try to put up some more posts. For now here's the website I've been getting a vast majority of the actual gardening information from: https://harvesttotable.com/how_to_grow_basil/
Photos:
A) A bunch of basil (in case you don't know what it looks like)
B) Safety warnings for high consumption of basil plants or medicines with dill as the active ingredient.
