Your damn uniform is meaningless! Your name is meaningless! And your death will be meaningless too! They're running out of officers- and now they want to send us out to slaughter, too! I'm the traitor? We've all been betrayed- by Supreme Command! This isn't about me or you!
The lives of this whole company rest on your shoulders, Paul- and yours alone. Do you know what that means? Do you really understand? Think about what I said! Make your own decision, for once in your life! Please!

What is your favorite example of each horror Subgenre?
This is SUCH a good question that I've been putting off answering it to try and collect my thoughts. I don't know 100% that these are my favoritest favorites of all time -- they're subject to change! -- but here are some movies I really enjoy, from a bunch of different subgenres. (the subgenres are kind of arbitrary)
SLASHER
Slashers aren't my favorite, just in general, but if I had to pick a franchise I vote Scream because it's smart, funny, and extremely nostalgic. It's the horror that got me into horror in a lot of ways so it wins by default.
HOME INVASION
You're Next for redefining the Final Girl for the 21st century, and just being a joy to watch. Funny Games for being genuinely clenchingly terrifying.
GHOST
The Devil's Backbone might be my favorite ghost story ever. It's got all the pieces I look for in one.
VAMPIRE
Let the Right One In might be my favorite vampire movie, if I'm being honest.
WEREWOLF
Dog Soldiers, although I'd argue it's less a werewolf movie and more a monster movie. Ginger Snaps isn't as good of a film but is a great werewolf tale.
ZOMBIE
Train to Busan, hands down. Although Shaun of the Dead is pretty high up there too.
POSSESSION
It's gotta be The Medium. Demonic possession movies don't usually do it for me, but that one in particular scared the pants off me.
TORTURE
Dread, which I talk up every chance I get.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
"Is this really happening or am I going crazy" is one of my absolute favorite subgenres of horror, and I love a good mindfuck movie. I'll throw out a dark horse contender for this, though, and say Salvage, a movie I never see anyone talking about. It's about a girl who suffers the same horrific crime over and over again.....or does she?
GRIEF
Look, I think grief horror is its own distinct genre at this point. Watch out for my essay in next month's newsletter. Also The Babadook has to take this spot for me. I fucking love that movie no matter what people say.
MUMBLECORE
Low budget movies with a small cast, limited setting, understated action, and really clever scripts are my other favorite genre of film. I just love them so, so much, okay? They Look Like People and Scare Me are a couple I will sing the praises of all day. I also really enjoyed My Heart Can't Beat Unless You Tell It To
HORROR COMEDY
Cabin in the Woods. I don't care. Fight me.
ANTHOLOGY FILM
Probably Southbound. I think about that movie a lot.
