Did you know? Pokémon Snap Programming
Did you know they used some pretty awesome techniques to code Pokémon Snap?
I absolutely loved playing Pokémon Snap for the Nintendo 64 when I was a kid. Whether it was trying to get the best score or just see how many Pokémon I can whack with an apple, I sunk way too many hours into it. Fast forward to 2021, we've got a new game coming out, and the first thing I thought when playing was "How did they program this?" Computer vision is definitely capable of pretty amazing things, but I kind of doubt the developers made a huge machine learning model to search for so many different Pokémon, recognize what pose they're in, recognize other Pokémon in the frame, etc. And even if that were the case, there's zero chance that's how they did it back in 1999. There has to be an easier way... but how?
Disclaimer: I didn't develop either the old Pokémon Snap or the new one, so I clearly don't know the exact techniques they used. However, I think I've got a pretty good theory as to how they did it. Give it a read and let me know if you agree or think I'm wildly off base.
So there are a few questions we need to answer here:
How are the Pokémon programmatically represented?
How does the Professor know which Pokémon are in the picture?
How are the other criteria (size, pose, direction, position) determined?
With those questions listed, I think we can get a pretty good idea of how the game [probably] works.
How are the Pokémon programmatically represented?
So we know this game is a 3D game, so clearly the Pokémon needs to know its position in this 3D space. I assume it also has variables for what direction it's currently facing, as well as what "state" it's in. I'm guessing each Pokémon has a list of states that correspond to different poses and a state machine for when to transition between the states (e.g. In "Idle" state, player hits it with apple, enters "Shocked" state). This doesn't sound all that impressive, but it's how I think these variables are used that get interesting.
How does the Professor know which Pokémon are in the picture?
I believe that when you take a photo, the game first takes a screenshot (which should just be as simple as reading the frame buffer and dumping it to an image), then determines the score of your picture right then and there. You heard me right; the game already knows how terrible your picture is the second you take it; the Professor is just the messenger. And how does it do this? Ray casting.
Ray casting is essentially where the game "casts" a line from the player straight out into the horizon and computes if it hits an object in its path. So in the picture above, you draw a line from the player's eye and the computation can determine that there's a circle blocking a few of those lines. I believe this is the exact same technique used in Pokémon Snap. The game draws a number of lines from the camera and checks if any of them hit any Pokémon. And if it knows which Pokémon it hit, it can know all of those variables pertaining to that Pokémon, including its pose, direction, etc. It should also know if it hit any other Pokémon in the same shot, so that's how that "Other Pokémon" category is calculated.
How are the other criteria (pose, size, direction, position) determined?
Once we know what Pokémon are in the picture, we can start reading through its variables. Pose can be read from the Pokémon's state, then have some lookup table for how many points that state is worth. Size can be determined by how far along the ray the Pokémon is - the closer along the ray means a larger Pokémon. Direction can be calculated as the difference between the player's direction and the Pokémon's direction - it's directly facing the Player if the Pokémon's direction differs 180° from the player, and any distance from 180° can be subtracted from the maximum points. Position can be determined by the Pokémon's position in the 3D space minus where the centermost ray "intersects" with the plane the Pokémon is on - the Pokémon is in the center of the photo if the Pokémon is 0 distance units from the centermost ray, and any distance can be subtracted from the maximum points.
And there you have it! I found a comment on a Reddit thread about someone who developed their own Pokémon Snap inspired game and they used the exact techniques I've described here, so I hope there's some merit to them. What do you think? Do you think I nailed it or do you think they secretly had super advanced computer vision algorithms back in the 90s?

I find it... interesting that Resident Evil 8, subtitled Village, is the first to introduce vampires and werewolves to the series. Up until that point, the series had always been about biological weapons, mainly of the viral kind. As a Dracula fan, I immediately pledged myself to catch all the way up on the series in anticipation for VIII after seeing the announcement trailer in June 2020. I basically didn’t know anything about the series, as I was too young for M-rated games during its heyday (at least by my parents’ standards) and had no older cousins or siblings who’d introduce me. I didn’t even make the pandemic connection at first. All I was thinking of was how my new PS4, bought with the money I’d originally saved to go see my mom in Tennessee one last time, was slowly becoming my new favorite thing. It’d gotten my roommate through April with The Last of Us Remastered and it got me through May with Horizon: Zero Dawn. If I’m gonna make the switch from Nintendo to Sony, I may as well get to know Resident Evil starting in June.
The pandemic parallels came in much later. I’m playing them in release order, and it’s not until the second game that the characters have the time and awareness to consider synthesizing a vaccine. The characters in the first game have to figure out what’s going on as it’s happening to them, and it’s important to remember that zombies came back into popularity due to the efforts of that first game, meaning the exact nature of the threat would have come off more ambiguous at the time. The game’s Japanese title, Biohazard, holds the clue: we’ve scarred an ecosystem, and the human damage may be beyond repair. All you can do is try to save all the people who don’t deserve to be there as it happens.
Starting in the second game, I'd hear the characters talk about vaccines. I myself will reach full vaccination status tomorrow afternoon, and here I am playing games with characters who’ve killed just to get close to making one. The difference between our viruses in theirs is that we actually have some hope of curing ours, as in the world of Resident Evil, everything seems unstoppable. Momentum never seems to end once it’s been picked up - not for the virus, not for the destruction, and certainly not for human greed. The player is supposed to survive and nothing more, not live and thrive but to continuously struggle, lose, and sacrifice as they make their way through an environment that is either mastered or deadly to the touch. “Don’t get too close,” the special operatives say to their fellow agents. Resident Evil offers the power fantasy of knowing how to handle something impossible through trial and error. The horror is overcome by learning to live with it.
At least that’s how the first three games work. Starting with the fourth, all the atmosphere, pacing, and level design keep their levels of quality, but instead serve a much more direct fantasy of power in the form of a dread thriller with a pint of action thrown in for good measure. It’s clear that our relationship with the environment had changed by the time it was released. RE4 became the blueprint for third-person shooters, but funnily enough, going back to it reveals that it’s everything around the shooter that allows the main mechanic to shine that deep into the spotlight. The characters, for instance: Leon, now a professional, is infected with the game’s new virus himself early on, and he begins to have nightmares about what it might be doing to his body. If you’ve just come off playing through Leon’s first day as a cop in RE2, this is terrifying. He is practically a special agent at this point, meaning he’s accomplished quite a lot since the last game, so his plot armor can’t exactly be thick. Are we gonna see a character in Resident Evil, a game requiring a lot of death at first, actually die in canon?
More importantly: what does he do now that he has the virus? Is he gonna be okay? Am I hitting myself too close to home? Or is this the only piece of media that feels relevant to me anymore?
Resident Evil 5 takes place in Africa, and despite semiplausible claims of racism actually ends up being a staunchly anti-colonial parable about overcoming a world of fear. Chris Redfield finally lets go of fear when he looks over at Jill Valentine and Sheva Alomar, the two women who have now saved his life too many times to count. RE5 was built for co-op play, and its story is based around the vulnerability and necessity of partnership. It’s not defeating the big bad in a giant volcano that helps Chris live uninhibited. It’s his support network, however small it may be. (There’s even a woman of color in it). The characters of RE have always been at the forefront of the experience, but 5 at least tries to make it clear that there really are people worth fighting for out there, and ten times out of ten, you can spot them as the ones who’re fighting right there with you.
RE6 picks up on this theme of connection, gets high on nostalgia, and plays fast and loose with tone in a sort of victory lap. I’m not finished with it but it isn’t great so far. I also haven’t touched RE7, Code: Veronica, or Zero, as I want to finish those last two spinoffs before I move on to another phase of the mainline titles. And all the while, all my gaming channels are covering RE:Village without really covering it at all. I know that Capcom is bound to have some scientific explanation as to why vampires and werewolves made their debut in the series with this game, as it’d been in development for three years prior to its announcement, an echo of the past finally heard. But still, even if we’re grading on a curve, context is context. How wild is it that a year and change after the pandemic began, a game series known for its bio-weapons turns a gothic corner and drops its original moniker? Indeed, RE:Village is also the first not to have “biohazard” on any release title anywhere, regardless of region. In truth, I can’t quite blame the publications - I wouldn’t have noticed if I didn’t sit down to write this tonight.
Would I have boarded that hype train in June if the game had kept its chemical warfare? The Last of Us: Part II, another franchise brought to me by Sony, also had its virus and pandemic in the foreground, and that’s a top ten game for me now given my specific experience with it. But then, Resident Evil is special. The beautifully detailed graphics, endearing character moments, atmospheric pacing, motivated sound design, and confrontational control schemes have all made it stand apart to me as a series. I really have no comparison for how these games have challenged me and made me feel during this time. I’ve watched Chris become a soldier, Claire become a mother, Leon become a hero, and Jill come back from the brink, all while underneath the heavy horrors of a natural environment turned unstoppably hostile. One way or another, I’m glad I met them.
This was the year everything in my life took off in directions that I could no longer follow or keep up with. I can’t describe to you how much I feel like I’ve lost, despite all the incredibly important personal work I have done behind the scenes. I realize now that there are some changes that simply can’t be stopped or unchanged, only survived, endured, and adapted to. It’s taught me that we hardly ever seek change - it seeks us, and we are offered the task to accept it or defend against it. There’s something that feels right about playing these games at this time, of that I’m sure. I find it interesting that, by the time I get to RE:Village, the franchise itself will have changed into something quite different. But with each new game I’ve crossed off my list, RE has earned more and more of my trust as a series that knows all too well how changes come and go. Hopefully I will change right along with it.

VOTES FOR WOMEN!
Picking my nominations is actually a feminist action.
I'm pretty much happy to let most of my nominations slug it out but there are a couple of smaller titles that maybe people wouldn't be familiar with that I'd like to put my weight behind. In particular, the games as my nominations often fall onto the indie side and people often haven't heard of them.
GAMES
Among the Sleep
This is an indie game from a Norwegian developer. It was first released on pc in 2014 and the definitive remastered title was released in 2014 on pc and then on ps4, xbox one and nintendo switch in 2019. The game is a s a first-person survival/ exploration game told from the perspective of a toddler. It's primary setting is in the child's house. I don't want to spoil too much about the actual plot but here's a short gameplay clip that gives you a feel for the gameplay and aesthetic without spoiling plot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWDQN_X5b-M&feature=emb_title
And if you would like to know more, dm me or whatever and I can definitely tell you more, I'm just conscious that I don't want to spoil it at all before jumping into the game.
Detention
This was the first game released by Taiwanese game developer Red Candle Games. A fair description of the genre would probably be political horror-survival. If you remember, they were that company who about a year ago released the game, Devotion. That was the game that was causing people to literally faint and throw up while they were streaming it (which, FAIR). If it hadn't been scrubbed from the internet due to offending Chinese dictator Xi Jinping (unrelated to the fainting & vomiting), tbh that would probably be the one I would like Jet to play as it is An Experience. But Detention is also a fascinating game and if you DID manage to play Devotion while it was available or have seen gameplay of it, you will agree that you can really see the influence this game had on the development of Devotion, minus the gore and other over the top horror elements. It's a lot more toned down. The game is set in the 1960s during the 'White Terror' martial law period of Taiwan's history and incororates a lot of elements of elements based on Taiwanese culture, religious beliefs, history & mythology. The main characters in the story are Wei and Ray and the premise is to figure out a way to leave school as the characters get stuck there at night and find that the school is haunted by creatures known as 'the lingered' (or wangliang in Chinese). I'm really struggling to describe the game without giving away too much but once again, if you want to know more, dm me :) Here's the launch trailer. It also doesn't give away too much but gives you a feel for the aesthetics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mJQ_LH2n0k
As far as the other things I'd like to encourage people to vote for, in the live action category, please vote for The Magicians and the Crown. Because I obviously mustn't have been clear with my nominations, they were combined so it's really just one vote :) Value for money! The Magicians is a fantasy series from the Sy-fi channel that gives me personally an Orphan Black feel but with more magic and less science (not no science though). The best way of describing it is it's about Harry Potter/Narnia fans who actually get accepted to wizard school. The book series exists within this universe but it's just a book series for children. But it also may or may not be real, mostly it's just understood to be a book series though. But also, yeah the way the story is told kind of reminds me of Orphan Black. But maybe I also just don't watch a tonne of sci-fi/fantasy and that's all it is. And then The Crown is the Netflix series. I thought it might be a fun series for Jet to liveblog through her English lens. And I'm pretty sure we all know what this is about, even if just through cultural osmosis. It's a historical drama following the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the current queen of England.
In the movie category I would like to ask people to vote for Cats for the eldrich horror of it all, Cabaret and Jennifer's Body. I had this just in brackets and it got longer and longer but I have a lot of feels about Jennifer' Body. I remember when this came out only hearing awful things but it's actually a great movie. It starts Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried and was the directed by the same lady who made Juno). The only reason it received so many terrible reviews is because of the hatefest poor Megan was subjected to in the 2000s. That and it's actually a very feminist film, since the Me Too movement, it's been re-branded as feminist horror both because Megan Fox deserved so much better than the shit she was subjected to and also just because of the story itself. But also, here's an extra of a quote with the writer, Diablo Cody which I need to share because it's great;
“(Director) Karyn Kusama and I are both outspoken feminists. We wanted to subvert the classic horror model of women being terrorized....I want to write roles that service women. I want to tell stories from a female perspective. I want to create good parts for actresses where they’re not just accessories to men. The friendships that I had as an adolescent had this unparalleled intensity. I wanted to show how almost horrific that devotion can be. It’s almost parasitic."
But yeah, insecure toxic dudebros tanked the reviews for the movie but it's really, REALLY good if you could please give it a chance!
As mentioned before, a vote for my choices is really just a vote for feminism and womankind so I appreciate your time and really hope you guys will support my causes <3

Introspective and Analytical Paper.
For most of my life, I have been surrounded by many different forms of media. I had the fortunate luck of being born in the early twenty-first century where I have grown with the media world. For my Journalism 101 class, I was required to monitor and record my media usage throughout a normal week and use that data as the groundwork for an introspective and analytical report. As I recorded the time and the effects of my media usage, I became more and more surprised by the quantity of media that I consumed. Additionally, I was more aware of the effects (emotional, physical, psychological) that my consumption of media caused. In this report, I will outline my media usage over the past week and take an in-depth look at the science behind the effects that my media usage had on me.
I started recording my media activity on Monday, March 18th, 2019 and finished on Monday, March 25th, 2019. Once I finally compiled all the data, the only way to describe how I felt was shocked. Every day for the past week, I was averaging 12 hours of media usage. I had no idea that I was spending half of my everyday life interacting with some form of media. If anything, all this data really gives me an appreciation for media and a greater understanding of the effect media has on a person’s life.
Now I want to take a step back and analyze the effects of two different kinds of media that I consumed this week: playing video games and watching a hockey game.
I am going to start with me playing video games. During my week I only played video games for two days (Friday and Sunday). On these two days, I played two separate games and experienced two different effects. On Friday I played Super Mario Galaxy on my old Nintendo Wii. On my graphs, I labeled that playing this game caused my heart rate to increase which can be attributed to the focus required to complete the game’s levels. However, I also labeled that this game made me feel very nostalgic which I decided to look more into. According to an article entitled Video Games as Time Machines: Video Game Nostalgia and the Success of Retro Gaming, “Research on the potential of media stimuli to trigger nostalgia has found that trailers of video games and movies may hold the potential to make people feel nostalgic. Wulf and Rieger found evidence that the parasocial relationships that viewers establish with on-screen media personae lead to increased feelings of nostalgia when people remember past media content” (Wulf, Bowman, Rieger, Velez, and Breuer). As I played through the game more, I started to feel a sense of longing and happiness. Playing my old favorite video game made me want to return to when I was younger playing Super Mario Galaxy for the first time. I believe that this example shows how media can help to create a sense of nostalgia.
The second game I played this week was Dark Souls Remastered on my Nintendo Switch. This is the game I played on Sunday and if anyone is familiar with Dark Souls, they know how rage-inducing it is. Dark Souls is famous for its high difficulty as well as its brutality. After I was met with every “You Died” screen during my session, I felt myself getting more and more angry. As I got angrier and angrier at the game I was reminded of our textbook and what Karen Dill said about media violence. In How fantasy becomes reality: Seeing through media influence, Karen Dill says, “There is general agreement in the scientific community that media violence causes aggression…They were reported on the many methods of research to use all over the popular genres of media (TV, movies, video games, etc.) —studies that repeatedly document the same essential message —violence breeds violence” (Dill pg.77). I believe that this example shows that media has a great impact on the tempers and emotions of its users.
The final form of media consumption that I will be analyzing from my week is watching a hockey game. I am a huge Vegas Golden Knights fan and I have been a dedicated follower of their franchise since their inception. I love this team. I know every player, their position, how many points each of them has, and each of their histories with the team. As one can see from my graphs, hockey games took up a big portion of my media consumption last week. Every time I watched a game, I was on the edge of my seat hoping for the Knights to score another goal. I became happy if they had won the game, and sad if they had lost. Eric Simons, who has researched the neuroscience behind sports obsession, sums up this idea perfectly in an article he wrote for the Washington Post. Simons said, “A sports team…is an expansion of a fan’s sense of self. It is not an obnoxious affectation when a devotee uses the word ‘we’; it’s a literal confusion in the brain about what is ‘me’ and what is ‘the team.’ In all kinds of unconscious ways, a fan mirrors the feelings, actions and even hormones of the players. Self-esteem rides on the outcome of the game and the image of the franchise” (Simons). What Simons is describing here is the idea behind para-relationships which perfectly exemplifies my relationship with the Vegas Golden Knights.
From affecting a person’s emotions to establishing para-relationships, media has this amazing power to affect each of use in a variety of different ways. This assignment has given me a new appreciation for the world of media, and I will continue to implement media in my life every day.

VIDEO GAMES 2017: ONE MILLION GAMES ENTER, TEN GAMES LEAVE.
Well that sure was the best year in video games since probably 1998, wasn’t it? Nintendo put out a new console and 3 major franchise entries, basically every anticipated game of the early 10′s finally frickin’ came out, we got 4 new English Falcom games, 3 of which with good locs, and they made a new Nier? What???
What a time to be alive.
Let’s not waste any time getting to the list, lord knows VIDEO GAMES 2017 has already sucked out enough time from me for a lifetime.
Before we begin, here’s my lists for 2015 and 2016.
Honorable Mentions:
Persona 5:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaIo82uT0qs
It’s insane that this game isn’t in my top ten, hell, it’s insane that it isn’t in my top five. It’s less a commentary on Persona 5′s quality and more that the games that did make the list resonated with me a whole lot more. VG2017 truly was too powerful.
P5 is mired with stiff localization problems, but even without the loc in consideration, the thematic through-line of the game gets muddled and becomes a toothless version of the promising rebellious first ten hours the game provides by the time you reach the finish line, which also just happens to come 20 hours too late, in my opinion.
What a great looking and feeling game though.
Tales of Berseria:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYXwD2CfxOs
On the flipside we have this game, the first Tales game I’ve enjoyed since Tales of Vesperia back in 2008. This game has an amazing story and great characters with a thematic backbone that sticks to your ribs after you finish it.
Now if I didn’t hate the act of actually playing it and having to scour its way too big boring empty dungeons and crappily designed world, it’d be a list maker for sure.
OKAY NOW IT’S TIME FOR THE CERTIFIED BANGERS:
10. Metroid: Samus Returns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhQWJG-_Oco
Somehow my least favorite Metroid game got two remakes that both made my list two years in a row?? This game is pretty great in it’s own right though it has a few control scheme imperfections and I could see a switch port easily being the definitive version to get.
The reason this game really makes the list though is because of how it lives up to its title. Finally an official Nintendo Metroid game that comes out and undoes Sakamoto’s vile character assassination of Samus back in Other M. .
The queen is back, and she has been missed.
9. Horizon: Zero Dawn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD0DByDxJBA
An engrossing open world, great stealth/hunting/gathering systems AND robot dinosaurs are just a part of what makes this first outing for what seems like an extremely promising series great.
No, what really sets this game apart from its contemporaries is how it fleshes out its backstory, culminating in the creation of what might actually be the most despicable piece of shit villain ever put to writing for a video game. And he’s been dead for a thousand years so you can’t do shit to him.
Fuck you, Ted Faro.
8. Night in the Woods
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2UUFFMGcgY
This game hit extremely close to home for me. Forced to come back home to a small, dying town full of people clinging to the good old days instead of doing anything for the generation after them, having this game to play and have it be said out loud that yeah, other people are living this nightmare too, was insanely refreshing.
For as much as we all need a bit of direction sometimes, sometimes what we also need to know being a directionless 20-something asshole trying their best is okay too.
Also Gregg rulz ok.
7. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNgph1g422Q
Great gameplay, great music, fun characters, one of the most fun to explore worlds in an action adventure game. This game truly nails the sense of pure adventure Ys is known for.
It’s a shame then that it’s plagued with one of the most laughable translation efforts in the industry, much of the games personality comes from the fact that even a bad localization job can’t overwrite some character quirks, but this still leaves the rest of the script feeling extremely stiff at best and incomprehensible at worst.
I hope the re-translation patch is good. Until then, Fuck NISA and have a good day.
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiU65nQdZE8
I would describe this game as a great first step in evolving the Zelda formula. That’s not even really that accurate, the real first step was in Link Between World’s item rental/no dungeon order systems.
Nevertheless, BOTW amazes with a sense of scope and exploration no game has ever really come close to, and achieves it almost effortlessly by simply giving you the ability to climb anything.
More music, more proper dungeons, a deeper story and a few durability tweaks are basically all you need to make the next Zelda game the easy best in series.
5. Yakuza 0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYB-D9qEwzI
This isn’t the best game this year, but it is easily, no question, the MOST video game this year. 110 hours in and only 60% complete, Yakuza 0 is the game that keeps on giving, with an enthralling true crime story that reshapes what we know about its protagonists. It’s pretty much a non stop emotional thrill ride to the finish line.
It effortlessly incorporates the best side story aspects from the many games in the series to come out before it, and utilizes them with a fantastical glee that keeps you with a smile on your face for the whole run. This is easily the funniest game I’ve played this year. Thank you SEGA.
4. Hollow Knight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1unm0LS10ao
God I can’t wait for this game to get ported to consoles. I bought a new laptop basically just to play this game and the absolutely enthralling metroidvania world design, hand drawn and animated aesthetic, and fantastic npc characters blew me away.
The encounter designs are tough but fair(except maybe the Colisseum) and the DLC so far has been great. I can’t wait for all the post release content to come out so I can play through it all again on Switch and probably PS4.
It’s insane only 3 people made this game.
3. Super Mario Odyssey
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhciLj5VzOk
Nothing to say here that hasn’t been said by hundreds of others. SMO is pure joy distilled into video game form.
I can’t wait for Odyssey 2 to come out and somehow blow this one out of the water like Galaxy 2 did for Galaxy.
2. Nier: Automata
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKOM3lNFajE
An amazing contemplation on what it means to be alive, and a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to a story that, for me at least, has been told since Drakengard in 2003. Game after game of sad tragic stories with bad endings and characters fighting an imperfect world imperfectly and only making things worse while temporarily making things better for themselves.
And really even in those cases there’s caveats.
Caviats???? Anyway.
Ending E of this game finally brings some semblance of peace for this fucked up world where a deranged killer and his dragon fell through the sky and made things the worst for everyone for literally tens of thousands of years. Finally Devola and Popola can sleep. All is well.
1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wld2q4mLhYM
Another year, another Trails game at number 1. I’ll be real with you, I’m about to drop a bunch of personal rambly stuff about what this entire trilogy means to me so if you don’t wanna read that, that’s fine.
This game is basically a perfect epilogue to a game that means a whole lot to me and serves as an amazing capper to an amazing jrpg trilogy.
When I first played Trails in the Sky First Chapter, it was the PC version in 2014. Now in 2014 I was coming off being in college for about 6 years, switching majors a few times and not really being into what I was doing but, yknow, you gotta major in something and then you gotta get a job, that’s kind of what getting started as an adult is.
So I played this weird little jrpg that was, fundamentally, about a country and the people in it trying to move on from a tragic war years prior, hiding their still fresh wounds in plain sight and just trying to go on with their lives.
It was an extremely interesting game, for how plot-light it was in the early goings, you got to really feel the struggle of these people and the unseemly past they were trying to run away from or avoid repeating. This underlying conflict builds and builds until we can’t ignore it anymore.
When I played Second Chapter a year later, I had been laid off from a job I got right out of College and had no employment prospects. I hated the fact that I’d spent basically my entire adult life up to that point doing something I wasn’t passionate about and then got let down by the system.
At the same time, the shame of my situation lead me to close up and not tell anyone about the problems I had, I was broke, I owed two months rent, on the verge of getting evicted, I felt extremely alone.
All this to get to the point that Second Chapter was ultimately a game about pulling out the dark shit we don’t like talking about and saying “it’s okay to talk about this stuff, there’s always someone who will listen.” It got me to get over myself somewhat and actually reach out for help, and I’m really thankful for it not letting me hit rock bottom.
Two years later still, I’m in a much better place, I finally feel happy about where my life is and what I’m doing and oh boy here comes Trails in the Sky the 3rd.
Completing the journey I started back in 2014, I found myself playing a game all about how it’s okay to acknowledge the bad things that happened to us, so long as we learn and move on from them accordingly.
This trilogy has so much heart, and so many memorable characters, and so much to say. It’s so, so special to me, and I was openly weeping when all the characters I’ve come to know and love over 4 years finally parted ways.
Thank you Falcom for making these games, and thank you Xseed for bringing these games to us.
TL;DR
#game of the year#trails in the sky#nier automata#night in the woods#ys#metroid#mario oddysey#hollow knight#yakuza 0#zelda breath of the wild#horizon zero dawn

Final Fantasy XI Interview – Director and Producer Reveal Experiences and Hopes, Special Message to Western Fans
May 16, 2020 4:45 PM EST
With the 18th anniversary of Final Fantasy XI, Director Yoji Fujito and Producer Akihiko Matsui look back and forward at the long-running MMORPG.
This year marks the 18th anniversary of Square Enix’s long running MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. To celebrate the incredible milestone, I was able to interview Director Yoji Fujito and Producer Akihiko Matsui and get some insight into both the past and present of the game, Fujito and Matsui’s history before they worked on FFXI, what the future entails for the title, as well as a special message to Western fans.
Allisa James: When you first started development for Final Fantasy XI did you ever think you’d see the game continue for eighteen years?
Yoji Fujito: When the FFXI team got together twenty years ago, we had no idea about anything that would happen that far into the future. All I knew at that time was how truly ecstatic I was to be able to work on developing an MMORPG, especially after having been inspired by Ultima Online. It never crossed my mind that I might find myself still working on that same game after all this time.
Akihiko Matsui: The overall direction from our producer at the time was that we’d be working on the project for a period of three to five years. However, I knew I needed to dedicate myself so that we could keep going for longer than that, and honestly, I did think that we could keep FFXI going as long as we did well. I feel that I can take pride in these results because they show how we as a team were able to create something very successful.
AJ: Can you describe your first experiences working on Final Fantasy XI when you joined the team? How have things changed over the years?
YF: Prior to working on FFXI, I had only worked on standalone, package (non-digital) titles, and with those games, the final stages of development were always filled with onslaughts of bug fixes and a rush to make final tweaks and adjustments. In working on FFXI, it was truly revolutionary at the time to be able to apply changes even after release by pushing out patches.
With physical package games, all of those final adjustments I mentioned are set in stone once the final build is created, and there were times when I was left lamenting certain things after the fact. We’re now in an age where it’s normal for even just your standard package game to receive bug fixes or additional content later on through patches. I think it just goes to show how times have changed.
AM: I remember back when we were in the beta testing phase when we were beginning to see a lot of the overall game take shape, there was a time when other development team members would come to discuss the battle system quite often, keeping me from making progress on my own work.
Developers are gamers themselves, after all, so I completely understand that feeling. At the same time, I was also in crunch mode and still had things left to do. It ended up that I would have no choice but to start going into the office at night and going home in the morning to be able to focus, and I kept that lifestyle up for a while. It was exhausting, so I won’t be doing that anymore.
AJ: What are some unique or interesting experiences you’ve had with developing and maintaining Final Fantasy XI? Are there any stories that come to mind that stick out in your memory?
YF: Two things come to mind here: Content that the development team creates will not always be played or experienced by the players in the exact way they envisioned. The economy of an in-game world actually ends up mimicking the characteristics of real-world economies quite a bit.
AM: This may not be what the question was getting at, but a lot of people who I’ve had the chance to work with from other companies, as well as other departments within our own company, now introduce themselves to me by saying that they used to be an FFXI player or that they are a current FFXI player. I try not to show it on my face, but honestly, it makes me very happy.
AJ: Can you share any insight on the reasoning behind including a mechanic that had players lose EXP and even level down when dying?
AM: This type of system was adopted mainly due to concerns that players could potentially harass others by intentionally KO’ing their own character if there was no risk associated with doing so. There were also others on the team who felt it was necessary for different reasons as well. That said, looking back on it now, I do feel bad that the penalty was more severe than was probably necessary.
AJ: Do you have any plans to revisit the various jobs and re-balance them in any way? Do you feel the current balance suits the gameplay you are hoping to bring players in Final Fantasy XI?
YF: I don’t think there will ever come a day that we feel like we’re done balancing the game. This is because the degree to which a job is needed is determined by whether that job possesses the skills and abilities required to get through in-game content, and also because player trends change. Therefore, sometimes we’ll directly adjust jobs if necessary, while in other instances we’ll modify the game content in order to achieve balance.
As far as our current balance goes, in general I feel there are no issues other than continuing to work on tweaking what would be considered endgame content.
AM: We adjust balance whenever necessary. There are many cases where issues stem from outside of the jobs themselves—for example, whether particular jobs can perform well when playing the most popular content at any given time. The game’s system is one that allows players to change jobs, so rather than making rigorous adjustments to ensure that the battle abilities for all the jobs are evenly matched with each other, what we prioritize most is that each job is fun and offers its own unique qualities in gameplay.
AJ: I’m aware you can’t comment on the current status of the mobile FFXI version still in development with NEXON. However, in a more general sense, can you speak on how the concept of a mobile title for FFXI came about in the first place?
YF/AM: Unfortunately, as this is a collaborative effort with Nexon, we are not able to provide any comments regarding this.
AJ: Are there any plans to bring Final Fantasy XI to other consoles such as PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X in any form?
AM: Considering the resources currently available to the FFXI team, rather than expanding to new consoles I would prefer to dedicate our efforts toward creating robust and fun content that will continue to provide for our current player base, but also be available to newcomers. With this in mind, we have no active plans for those particular consoles. However, it is never completely off the table, and if we do continue to see a strong demand from our players, we will of course consider.
AJ: Is there one feature or mechanic that you and the team always wanted to implement in FFXI, but couldn’t because it wasn’t feasible or workable? Any job classes that you wanted to add but weren’t able to?
YF: I wanted to provide a customizable UI system. This had actually progressed as far as play testing, but at that stage we encountered a flood of concerns surrounding maintenance costs on both the development side and for the end user (cost in the sense of time for the latter). Due to these fairly large increases as a whole, we ultimately decided to not pursue it any further.
I also wanted to include some kind of setup that would allow you to own your own physical house, but it seemed like Vana’diel might end up becoming covered with adventurers’ residences if we did, so we decided to go with the Mog House instead.
AM: I wanted to include a feature that would trigger whenever a player did something incredibly impressive like defeating a powerful nemesis or crafting a high-difficulty level item. A bard would sing a song praising your feat, and it would be heard by players all around the in-game world.
Imagine if you defeated a dragon, and if other players knew about it before you ever told them: “Hey, you’re that person the bard was singing about, aren’t you?” That’s the epitome of what I think it would be like living in a fantasy world! I’ve still always wanted to include this feature, and I’ve already thought of how I could implement it, but it’s so low on the list of priorities… (cries)
AJ: In regards to the North American community in particular, it seems additional efforts have been made such as the PAX 2020 meetup. Would you say you are continuing to try and do more for the NA community, and are there any plans in mind for the future?
AM: Over the past several years, players in the west have been returning to FFXI, and as a result, we’ve been able to get more staff members who serve as the point of contact for western players. If you don’t mind that it’s just Fujito and me, we’d love to come say hello anytime, so please don’t hesitate to let us know!
AJ: Is there anything else you want to say to the Final Fantasy XI community?
YF: I was looking forward to seeing everyone at PAX East 2020, which would have been my first event in North America since I went to talk about MMM (Moblin Maze Mongers) for the Wings of the Goddess expansion, so it was very unfortunate that it had to be canceled due to effects of COVID-19. Once the stay-at-home restrictions are lifted, and if people are still interested, I’d love to get another opportunity to visit, so I’m going to do my best to keep the flames of FFXI burning bright until then!
AM: The western community has become increasingly more vibrant thanks to all the supportive players out there. Same as always, I want to keep implementing content worth challenging, while also keeping in close communication with you all. Thank you for all your support.
Today marks the 18th anniversary of #FFXI! Thanks for the amazing support all these years!
