The one (1) thing that hamsters have going for them imo is that they are super easy to get into a bioactive enclosure and that's cool as hell. Since the person interested in bioactive enclosures is already probably a person who likes frogs/reptiles, they likely wouldn't care about cuddling or anything anyways (where the behavior problems like Biting appear). So if you don't want to worry about the instant death touch of human skin oils problem that frogs have then a hamster is a pretty great alternative.
Otherwise, no yeah hamsters are probably the worst option. I'm glad more people are learning to not get hamsters because they're great animals they just. Aren't good pets :/ I would put them as more advanced than a ferret at least. You gotta love them for being hamsters specifically first more than the generic joys of pet caretaking.
Hamsters baffle me. I don't think we keep them in Australia (I've never seen one in meatspace) and they make no sense to me as pets. Everything I've learned about them makes them seem like a shittier discount version of a pet rat.
#cats are definitely for me#if I couldn't have a cat I would probably get mice if I could#or a mantid#though I'd probably cry when they died#hence the preferring cats#rabbits are great too#I just don't understand why rats die OTL shouldn't they live 10 years at least??#can you tell this is also a pet husbandry blog still#even if I don't usually post like it
