A/N: I haven’t properly edited this chapter yet, but I wanted to get something out.

 Now that our regular class finals were over, Hyunjin and I were working overtime for the day we had left for our project. We were so close to getting where we needed it to be for his presentation of it and I was getting antsy. Currently, I was holed up in the producing studio I knew that later he would be at the dance studio across town. And, if I am being honest, I haven’t spoken to anyone in almost two days. Not even Hyunjin to discuss the project, granted he was too busy perfecting his routine to notice. In turn, this meant that I haven’t properly eaten… I had no one to drag me for coffee and something to eat and I have been too wrapped up in either the studio or my room on my computer to notice anything else. 

My phone has long been put on Do Not Disturd and I was finally getting somewhere with the background vocals. I’ve never been this picky with my songs, but I think since the main music part is mostly just me, I am overthinking it. I’ve never had to do main vocals and I am by far the best singer there is, but in the end had to for this so I’m kind of stuck with it. 

Although it was on Do Not Disturb, my phone would still occasionally light up with various notifications, and the last time it did, it was 5AM. My body was aching and I was having a hard time keeping my eyes open. I knew I was not going to be able to continue on properly with being as tired as I was and I hadn’t slept in over 24 hours and a little nap wouldn’t hurt. I set an alarm on my phone for 45 minutes and rolled up my hoodie as a make-shift pillow and I rested my head on it and let sleep take me in it’s comforting embrace.

I was awoken by someone’s hand on my shoulder, calling my name. It was Han Jisung. How the hell did he get in here? I shoot up straight and look around, slightly confused as to where I was…but it all floods back rather quickly, “Ji? What are you doing here?”

He meekly brushed a few strands of hair out of my face as he responded, “I was getting a studio for Chris and I before he got here and the receptionist asked me to check in on the person in here because they’ve been in here since yesterday morning…have you eaten anything, Y/N?”

I stretch widely and got up, back to my seat at the desk and shake my head, “Too busy. I’m okay, though- thank you for checking on me I probably needed to wake up soon anyway-wait…what time is it?” My body panics slightly.

Jisung looks down at his watch and responds, “It’s 6:30, why?”

“Shit, I was supposed to be awake an hour ago…it’s okay, Ji. Again, thank you, but I have to get back to work. But, please tell the receptionist I’m okay.” I dismiss him rather quickly.

He mutters something as he walks out hesitantly. 

I continue to work, going in and out of the recording booth…deleting and rerecording clips here and there, adjusting the bass and trebel, the balance between vocals and instrumentals, going back through the whole song until I was satisfied. Which eventually happened. Only, it was 8:45 by the time that happened. But, finally I was done…and it was basically a whole new song, for the most part. I knew by this time Hyunjin would be at the dance studio, so I decided to head straight there.

Picking up is favorite drink along the way, which the shop owner decided to give me for free this morning for some reason, I made it to the studio by 9 exactly. I quietly made my way into the building, trying not to disrupt anyone and found Hyunjin stretching to soft music. The temperature outside left a bite of cold in the air in the studio, but I’m sure once he got moving he would be grateful for the temperature. 

I mumbled a ‘good morning’ to my friend as I handed him his drink and I sat on the couch, legs folded under me. The tall man went from being on the floor to towering over me in a heartbeat. 

“So I got a call from Jisung this morning…” he started off.

“Oh, yeah? Saw him this morning briefly, one of the few people who have woken me up that haven’t gotten their eyes clawed out, by the way.” I respond with a gravelly voice.

“Mhm, he told me that you haven’t been out of the studio in almost 24 hours?” He states frustratedly. 

“Yes, I got caught up, what’s the big deal, Hyun?”

“The big deal is that you haven’t eaten either, Y/N…you need to eat, and sleep.”

“Don’t worry, I grabbed a snack on my way here, ate it already…mom.” I mumble the last part, because I felt like I was being scolded by my mom.

“Okay, well you probably didn’t eat enough, so what is going to happen is you are going to take a nap here so I know you are actually sleeping and once you are awake, we are going to get you some real food.” 

“I’m not gonna say no to sleep right now, that’s for sure.” 

He tosses me his hoodie and I opt to use that as a blanket, once again, I fall asleep rather quickly and stay that way, even over the music and the dancing in the background. You would think the sounds would keep me from falling asleep, normally they probably would, but in the moment, they lull me to sleep instead. 

I only wake up once and it was when Felix and Chris stopped by, Chris had a blanket in hand and was more than ready to swap out Hyunjin’s hoodie for a proper blanket. He sat next to me, just above my head…and for some reason, I rested my head on his thigh. He stilled for a moment, before relaxing and laying his hand on my arm. I couldn’t help but fall asleep once again.

I wake up from the feeling of strong nausea. And an extremely tight chest…

I shoot up from my position on the couch, interrupting whatever conversation everyone was having, and darting to the bathroom. Nothing came up, but I sat there dry heaving for a while. I’ve always hated getting sick in this way, I always felt helpless and no matter what, I always wanted my mom. I suddenly started crying, I felt like shit, hungry but too nauseous to eat. 

My blood sugar was definitely low and my mental health was now taking a drop. And I realize how hard it was getting to breathe.My breaths come out in sporadic huffs as I try to catch my breath just so I could begin to take slow breaths, to calm myself down. I didn’t want anyone to see me like this, especially not Chris. With shaky hands I message Hyunjin, asking him to come into the bathroom.

Within a couple of minutes, he’s running into the enclosed space. My hair, once pulled up into a bun, was now hanging in the hair tie by my shoulders. It was hot, too hot and I felt like I was going to throw up, even though I knew I couldn’t. He took a hair tie off his wrist and pulls my hair up, my head lulls back as he does so and he grabs my hand and sets it over his heart. There’s a loud roaring in my ears and I can hardly hear what he is saying but by the gesture, I understand that he is attempting to get me to breathe at the rate he was.

Suddenly he grabs his phone and dials someone, I still can’t hear him and I am at the point where I genuinely feel like I’m dying. My chest hurts, my throat hurts, and my lungs are beginning to ache from lack of proper oxygen. I see Hyunjin stand up and pull away to wet his hands under the faucet, coming back to put cool water on my forehead and the base of my neck. Out of the corner of my eye I see movement, but am unable to focus…or even care. Hyunjin goes out of view and Chris comes into view, my hand is pulled to his chest and his heartbeat is more noticeable than Hyun’s. He grabs my face so that I am looking at him in the eye and I begin to faintly hear him,” In, out, in out.”

He keeps a steady tempo to it as he continues to instruct my breathing and he hesitates to ask, “Would it be better if I hugged you?”  

I nodded, knowing that deep pressure has helped with attacks like this in the past for me, and once he wraps his arms around me, I am able to relax. My breathing doesn’t let up right away, and I am a little more aware my my surroundings, but I am able to request that he hug me tighter. I sigh out in relief once he gives me what I ask and I rest my head on his shoulder, noticing that Hyunjin had left. 

Once I calm down a bit more, he asks if I need a minute alone. I nod my head in response, needing to wet the cotton-mouth I have going on. He lets me know he was just going to be back in the studio whenever I was ready to come back. I rinsed out my mouth and walked out the door anyway, wiping the tears that gathered in my eyes. As I entered the dance studio, I noticed we had a few more additions to our little gathering. Everyone was here at this point, I made eye-contact with Chris as everyone still socialized amongst each other and signaled for him to come outside the door. I saw him grab my bag and say something to Hyunjin before following me out.

 He made sure the door closed behind him as I spoke, “I think I’m gonna head home, I’m just not feeling it.”

He watched me closely before taking a deep breath through his nose, “Not feeling it, or not feeling good?”

“Both?” I stated, unsure.

“Have you eaten anything?” He asked, knowing the answer already.

“No.”

“Let’s eat before you go home.”

“Chris, I’m not really-” “No, for my peace of mind, I need to see you eat something. Jisung told me how he found you and that you hadn’t eaten. You need to eat, even if it’s something small.”

I think about it before giving in and he’s driving us to a local cafe. 

Chris and I sat and ate for about an hour before he took me back to my apartment, walking me up. 

I felt the warmth of his body following behind me, guarding me…like I’m going to run at the first possible moment. I knew he was worried about me, he was the only one who really hid it well around me. And the past few weeks we’ve grown closer, we’ve gotten each other to open up and have even spoken countless times through text and over the phone. It was in this moment I truly felt feelings friends aren’t supposed to have for each other. I wanted nothing but him in my life. In this moment everything was quiet with him, the stress was gone when I was with him. I was happy and safe when I was with him. 

With him, everything was perfect.

I pulled my keys out of the pocket of my coat, in doing so my bag slid off my shoulder. He caught it, slipping it off my arm so that he could hold it. Before I could turn the knob to open the door, he softly grasped my upper arm, “Y/N, wait…”

My head cocks slightly to the side, “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

He looked like he was in pain, like, physical pain. I grab his hand off my arm, my fingers knotting with his and let out a hum in questioning, asking for an answer. He nods his head and whispers, “Yeah, I’m okay, I just…”

He suddenly pulled me closer to him, still speaking in a low voice, “Tell me if you don’t want this.”

“Want wha”

He kissed me, and it took a heartbeat for me to completely wrap my head around it and reciprocate but once I did oh. I parted my lips, asking…begging for more. I hear my bag drop to the ground as he brings one hand up my body to rest on my hip, the other on my jaw, the tips of his fingers curling in my hair. I pulled him closer by his waist, wanting our bodies welded together at this point. I take a chance and nibble on his lower lips, earning a groan from deep in his throat. My body filled with heat and I wanted more. But I didn’t get more. He pulled away, his body tense and shaking slightly. 

“Yeah, I’m okay, pretty girl.” He said to me, still holding me close to his body. For a few moments, we stayed like that. Until he pressed a few more light kisses to my lips, then my right cheek, left cheek, forehead,nose, jaw, and finally to my neck. I gasped from the sensation, my body still humming. 

He actually pulled away this time, leading my body back and handed my bag back to me, turning the knob that I had barely gotten a chance to unlock before he kissed me. He turned my body, pressed a chaste kiss on the crown of my head before leading me in my shared apartment.”I will see you later, pretty girl. Get some sleep, yeah?”

I nodded, pressing my lips into a fine line, closing the door as he walked away.

So....

I would absolutely love to stream right now, but I'm inable to.

One, because of whatever LOVELY person is blasting music like this is a fucking rave.

And two, and most importantly, I just am exhausted and don't have the energy for it; even after just waking up from a 1 and half nap.

And of course, I've narcolepsy to thank for that.

So, I recently went to a neurologist. I was hoping to finally get my face pain addressed and hopefully, diagnosed. But my new primary instead set me up with a sleep specialist. (I did not ask for, nor want this, btw. As I told the new sleep doctor, Narcolepsy is something I've just learned to live with and I'm manage it fine. It is not the severe, fall asleep at a split second kind, so I see no harm.) However, since my sleep study was so long ago and he'd likely be unable to get the records, he set me up with another that I had done last week. He said it might be something I have to "just deal with anymore" because that's been almost 15 years ago and medicine has advanced since then. He also said that there was a possibility I'd been diagnosed through process of elimination or that no other diagnosis fit at the time. So, I agreed, mainly for that last reason and because I was just curious.

So, I had it done and in it, I slept WAY better than normal and during the day, I couldn't sleep at all. (They ask you take naps throughout the day and only give you 20 minutes to do so. I don't care how tired I am, I could be literally passing out while standing, it I HAVE to sleep and especially if I know I have a small amount of time to do so, I can NOT sleep....like no matter what.) So, I was worried that the results wouldn't be accurate, one. And two, that I WASN'T actually narcoleptic and their was something else unexplainable going on (and thus, I'd have to start the process all over again).

Well, got the results today and I am 100% narcoleptic, though at this point in my life, that's a big Duh, but finding out what's wrong with me is always nerve-wracking. Anyway, they want to try me on some new medication for wakefulness during the day and......honestly, it's the whole reason why I didn't want to bother with any type of sleep study.

I'm not entirely sure why that kind of medication in particular makes me nervous. (And just now starting to wonder if I did indeed try some before and had a bad time because I honestly can't remember.)

But I think for one, it's a new medication. I have ALWAYS HATED medication with a passion and never want to be on too many pills.

Two, I'm worried about my insomnia. She mentioned that the staying awake or alert throughout the day can sometimes improve insomnia, but I'm 91% sure my insomnia is mostly anxiety and depression based. She also mentioned that getting regulated sleep can sometimes help with that....and that leads to another, unforseeable problem that arose.

They made me sign some kind of controlled substance contract and while I did scan through it and think I have a basic understanding, I have so many other issues that are far more pressing and I don't want to have issue with medications for those way more important things because I'm on some stimulant that I honestly don't want to be on. While my sleep definitely has an effect on my mental health, no part of me believes it's a CAUSE.

I have had mental health issues since I was a toddler; long, long before any type of sleep issues arose. So, *sigh*.....IDK. The whole thing just makes me nervous....

But, I AM willing to try. Maybe it DOES have an effect on my issues with my concentration and being able to complete tasks, especially my artistic pursuits (though again, I don't think it's the root). I will give it the college try, but if it keeps me up at night, or I just don't feel like it's doing anything, I will stop.

Perfectly Perfect: Prologue (Self-insert fic)

Title: Perfectly Perfect

Rating: General for the time being. Maybe Teen and up later for possible swearing(Most likely) and sexy times(I doubt it though) but for now it’s G.

Relationship: Steelbeak x Self Insert Lexi

Genre: Family/Friendship and eventually Angst and Hurt/Comfort

Chapter Summary: Just a bit of backstory for my oc. Steelbeak will appear in chapter 1.

Other: This takes place shortly after the Double O Duck episode and in the year 2019. So the kids are 12 years old. Launchpad should be about 32 years old. I know Steelbeak is in his 20s but I’m going to bump him to be LP’s age. 5 year age difference(roughly) is a lot better to me than like 10 years. Since I think Donald and Della are about 36 or 37 now and she’s the same age as them.

Author’s Note: 

Here’s the other dumb idea I came up with when I was suffering from insomnia the other night. 

I was going to make her a bird but stuck with dog since the main family is all ducks and Duckworth is the only canine honorary family member/friend that I can think of. 

Also the title was between Perfectly Perfect and Lucky One both by Simple Plan. After listening to both several times on loop, I felt PP was the better choice. So there’s a fun fact.

Prologue(You’re here!) - Next Chapter 

During the summer and after her 6th Birthday, Lexi Lulu, a Dognose, moved from Ohio to Duckburg, Calisota.

Her and her family were fully moved in by the time she started Kindergarten at an expensive private school.

Lexi was always super shy and likely has social anxiety. But she still had friends back in Ohio. So having to make new friends at a new school that she never went to before was making her anxious.

To make things worse, she had to do speech classes due to her speech impairment. And as such, would leave during one of her classes every week to meet with the speech teacher. Usually it was during something fun like Gym or Art Class. But it was only once a week.

It was still the first week of school when a duckling named Della came up to her to see if she wanted to play. As the girls walked over to the little kitchen area, they introduced themselves.

“My name’s Della Duck!” Della said. “You weren’t in my preschool class, right? Or were you in the other one?”

“I’m Lexi. And no. I moved here during the summer.” Lexi replied.

“Oh cool! You’ll like Duckburg!” Della grinned.

As the two continued to talk and play, Della couldn’t help but notice something familiar to her.

“Hey do you do speech classes or something?” Della asked.

“Not yet. I think I’m suppose to start next week.” Lexi said.

“Okay. Maybe you’ll have that with my twin brother! He has a speech problem too. But you talk better than him. He’s in the other Kindergarten class though. I don’t know why they split us up both this year and last year.”

“I don’t know either. Does he have lunch at the same time as us?” Lexi decided to ask.

“Uh huh! You can eat with us and I’ll introduce you to him. You already have something in common!” Della nodded.  

Later at lunch, Lexi and Donald met and instantly hit it off. As they expected, they had the same speech class together too. It made them both feel better that someone else had a similar problem and insecurity.

The years went by and they continued to remain best friends. She was actually at their Uncle Scrooge’s mansion so often that he took to calling her his niece too and allowed her to call him uncle.

When they were teens, she started going on all kinds of adventures with the three of them.

Donald started college about a year or two after high school and met Panchito and Jose. But Lexi and Della chose to keep going on adventures instead of college for a while. Scrooge decided to let Lexi move into one of the rooms in the mansion since she was going on adventures so often.

At one point, Lexi was in a relationship with Jose, but they mutually broke it off when they knew they couldn’t move permanently from their respective countries. So he moved back to Brazil sometime later.

A few years later when she, Donald, and Della were about 25, Lexi decided to go to college and take a break from adventuring. During that time, Donald had joined the Navy and even started going on adventures again while Panchito returned to Mexico.

The summer after her first year, Lexi’s niece was born. Months later in the following year, Della had three eggs. 

Fortunately, nothing happened to her brother or sister-in-law. Yet she was always watching her niece when they needed her to. Della took to helping more often when she found out about her own kids.

But when Della went missing after going into space, Lexi quit college.

The Ducks and McDucks had become like another family to her. With Della gone, Lexi knew Donald would need help raising the boys.

She tried to talk to Scrooge for months but he gave her the silent treatment. Or started yelling and threatening her. Simply misplacing his anger for what happened and taking it out on Lexi, especially after Donald took the boys and went no-contact.

Duckworth helped her move in with Donald for the time being since she was no longer welcomed to the mansion. But it made it easier to help Donald out while being under one roof.

As the kids grew up, she started being called Aunt Lexi by them. It started when her niece, Hailey, was over to play and called her it to get her attention. The boys asked if they could do the same since she was helping raise them and was basically their aunt despite not being related by blood or through marriage. Of course, they were fine with this. Lexi even saw them as her nephews too.

When the boys were about 5 or 6 and going to school, Lexi felt it was time to move out since the house boat was getting smaller as they grew older and bigger.

Lexi found a house nearby and began working from home so she watched the kids after school at her place since Donald, her brother, and sister-in-law worked until 5 or 6 PM.  

They were still mourning Della and Lexi was still upset at how her friendship with Scrooge ended. But overall, everything was fine now.

At one point, they noticed the boys introduce Hailey as their ‘cousin’ just like how Donald and Della did with her. So knowing the kids were getting along great was enough to make them happy.

Sure there were fights, but nothing more than the usual sibling or other relatives fights.

That said, they struggled with money since even though they weren’t living together, she was still paying Donald child support to help out. After all, she lived with herself and her turtle. That was barely two mouths to feed compared to his four. And Donald struggled with keeping jobs.

When the kids were 10 years old, Lexi had gone out of town to visit family back in Ohio with her parents and her brother’s family. So Donald needed a babysitter since she wasn’t home at the time. His only option? The uncle they haven’t spoken to in 10 years.

She was surprised when she returned home and found out that they had reconnected and Scrooge allowed them to move in with him. Especially after the house boat blew up.

Lexi went to visit one day when she was off work and her and Scrooge had a talk that they both knew needed to happen. He apologized for taking his anger out on her all those years ago. And even offered her old room to her so she can officially join the family again.

She gladly took it and moved in shortly after Donald and the boys did.

Soon, she discovered that she would quickly gain another niece that year in Webby. The following year after Lena was brought back, she started considering her as another niece too.

It was now 2019 and about a month or two after the Moonvasion happened. The aliens that stayed on Earth are living peacefully now.

After finding out she quit college to help raise her boys, Della more or less forced her to go back to school despite being in her mid-30s now.

So here she was at the library. Hailey, Huey, and Violet joined her since they made their own little book club. So while they looked for a new book to read and sat at a different table in her line of sight, she sat at a computer to do her homework.

Understanding Clinical Depression: Case Study Of Myself

I'm writing this for many reasons, but mainly because people rarely understand what Clinical Depression is, or what my particular form of Clinical Depression is like.

First I’ll describe Clinical Depression as briefly as I can. After that, I’ll describe my particular type of Clinical Depression.

Clinical Depression:

~ Is NOT simply “feeling sad”, as people constantly misuse the term – most of whom have never experienced clinical depression. In many forms of Clinical Depression, individuals a) don't feel sad, but b) have symptoms including inability to eat, sleep, move physically (AKA psychomotor retardation), socialize, recreate, take care of their health, or do constructive activity (including working for money).

~ Can also include insomnia of various kinds; hypersomnia; no motivation or willpower to do anything whatsover; inability to enjoy anything (including food or entertainment); inability to think, reason, or concentrate, to various degrees; loss of interest in life, to various degrees – mild to total; suicidal ideation; suicidal tendencies; and suicide attempts.  

~ Is DEFINED by not being able to function adequately – not being able to work for money, work on chores or errands, socialize, or take care of one's health adequately. If you can do all these things, but feel “down” or “sad”, it's NOT Clinical Depression, and is totally normal.

~ Is statistically proven to be the #1 reason / precursor to suicide.

~ Medications may or may not help, but usually does, to some degree – once people find the right medication for them – which could take days, months, or years

~ Is almost always helped, to varying degrees, by cognitive-behavioral therapy. Cognitive therapy deals with changing a person's cognitions; behavioral therapy deals with changing a person's actions. There are hundreds of proven techniques that work for clinical depression for each type, and they're almost always used in conjunction, leading to the term Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (AKA CBT).

~ Is almost always helped by physical exercise.

~ May be totally physical & unrelated to one's situation/environment, or totally dependent on such, or (usually) is some mixture.  

My particular form of clinical depression:

~ Is purely situational / environment-based. This has been proven countless times. In an adequate safe/sane/stable living environment, with access to medications and therapy and exercise, adequate housing, adequate health food, and adequate income to afford my basic needs, I have NEVER been clinically depressed. I'll have “down days” and “bad days”, but I can deal with those and keep functioning, working, taking care of my health, socializing, enjoying recreation, doing chores and errands, eating, sleeping, etc. And: Whenever I’ve been clinically depressed, it has ONLY been after severe, prolonged lack of one of those needs.

~ Began occurring regularly in 1998 – 21 years ago. Before 1998, I suffered Clinical Depression only rarely, only a few times, and was able to recover because I was able to get my basic needs met, one way or another, and get back to working or studying full-time.  

~ Since 1998, I have been in depressive states about as often as non-depressive states. The difference has been whether I'm getting my needs met.

~ Is a component of a vicious cycle that I've been struggling against for 21 years: If I don't have my needs met for months in a row, severe Clinical Depression results – which then results in not being able to work for money adequately – which results in not being able to afford adequate housing or healthcare or health food or medications, and also results in not being able to exercise or socialize – which reinforces the depression, completing the cycle.

~ Is a component of my legal diagnosis as being “Bipolar Type I” AKA “Manic Depressive” – which was also purely situational: I would get manic episodes or depressive episodes whenever I couldn't get my needs met for a prolonged theory of time. (Currently, and for many years, I have not gotten in any manic episodes, though, because of 2 mood-stabilizing medications that work on such, but do not keep Clinical Depression from happening.)

~ Is virtually guaranteed to continue as long as I'm unable to get more than $850/month income (from Disability Insurance), which is a few hundred dollars less per month than I realistically need to satisfy my basic needs, especially basic housing. The simple truth is that I do not get enough of an income to live a sane, stable, healthy life on, especially when homeless (which happens on a regular basis, because I don't have the money for a decent place to live). The best housing I can afford on this income would be a small room with strangers in Tucson, where living expenses are lower than practically anywhere else in the US. I could actually get an adequate room, with tolerable roommates, for about $400/month. However, finding roommates who are tolerable or even sane is an extremely difficult, time-consuming, and wildly uncertain process. People who present themselves as nice, friendly, and tolerable often turn out to be one or more of the following: unreasoanable, irrational, drug addicts, drug dealers, criminals, deranged, depraved, thieves, liars, lunatics, or they just can’t tolerate me for very long for whatever reasons. I have had around 26 roommates over the decades, and only about 20% of them have been tolerable or better; while every one of them seemed reasonable and friendly on the surface. Also: most roommate situations involve young college students who do not want to live with someone who isn't also a young college student. And then there are too many other difficulties to mention – such as those who don't want to live with someone “Bipolar” or depressed.

~ While in Clinical Depression, I cannot exercise or take adequate care of my health, or afford therapy or health food, and so my mental, physical, and physiological health continually deteriorate. This is one reason why people diagnosed as Bipolar I or Chronic Depressive typically die 20 years early, on average, according to the statistics.

The main basic need I have that I have extreme difficulty in getting met is that of adequate housing. The current plan to get this met is to get a room in Tucson with people that I've thoroughly screened. But I've done this before, and the chance of failure is enormous. I think that, with weeks of constant effort, my chance of finding a tolerable roommate is about 50%, at the very best.

I once had a tiny run-down studio apartment in Tucson for $400/month that worked out adequately 15 years ago, and I was not depressed at all during this time. However, a) that studio would cost about $500/month now, and b) was far from the city center, which was a problem even when I had a car, but would be an enormous problem without a car. (The reason I left that apartment was because all my friends had moved to Seattle, and I wanted to live with them – which I did – which didn't work out, because almost no one likes living too close to anyone else for very long, and the situation just gets increasingly difficult and stressful as people get on each other's nerves).

Was considering moving back to Luke's, but this looks unlikely, as he won't write me back.

Am also considering bike camping / touring at free campgrounds throughout CA (there are hundreds of them), though this looks very difficult, too stressful and harsh, and likely to result in clinical depression as I'd effectively be homeless, alone, and without a therapist or even a pet. It would also be somewhat dangerous at night, possibly lethal, in unfamiliar campgrounds or Slab City part of the time. But this would make the most sense economically, as my SSDI would go up to $1050/month or so for being a) homeless & b) in California; while I'd have zero rent, and could get most of my food from food banks, so I'd have about $500/month left over for saving up for a van or minivan or motorhome to live out of.

The core problem is that SSDI simply doesn’t pay enough for me to live on.

The final solution to the resulting predicament I’m in, and a permanent end to the vicious cycle I’m in, can only happen if I have a good, safe, healthy housing option that is guaranteed to work out AND that I can definitely afford with just SSDI (because I cannot rely on my ability to hold a full-time job right now).

Since getting affordable housing has proven next to impossible, my plan is to save up for a van, minivan, or motorhome, then to live at free campgrounds, which is something I could definitely tolerate, and I’d be able to work on web design & political projects & writings with my laptop tethered to my cell phone from virtually anywhere.  And free rent, most food coming from food banks, and getting the maximum SSDI of $1050/month, I’d be able to save $500-$550/month for emergencies, repairs, health problems, and a better life in general.

People already are lined up waiting for the park to open, the line gotten bigger from just an hour. On the inside of the park the owner gave everyone working a greeting and a little bit of an lecture.

“Minutes from now the park will open and I’m hoping that everyone will be on their best behaviors.”

“Don’t just look at us, they are the kids here!” Jackson exclaimed and Bam whined too, “We worked here longer. We know what we doing man.” They’re are a hand full of those who basically graduated from this program that still work here. There’s Jae, Bam, Jackson, Jinyoung, Younghyun, Mark, Momo, and Sana. Jisung plans to stay too. The college life is not suitable for him, he barely graduated high school. The park did finally open and the line outside gathered about to the inside. All the workers were at their respective areas before people came inside. Eight hours from now the park will close and everyone will go back to their rooms, just to be bored. Even if the park was packed the time went by slow. Maybe it was because the weather was unbelievable that even the ones in the coldest of water complained. Chan and Woojin stayed cool in the office of the ticket booth, lucky is what the others call them. Almost the whole park can hear Jeongin from the highest slide complain about the heat. Jisung didn’t mind it at all. He lives for the heat. Of course he knows it’s crazy that he would rather stay baking in the sun instead of standing knee level in the pool like Minho. The heat for him is almost.......comforting?

“You look like a fish on a grill.” A soft voice got Jisung to sit up from the lifeguards’ tower. Sana plopped her chin down on the arm chair to look at him with a little smile. 

“I’ll bake like one too.” Sana is nice. Actually the first person to say hi to Jisung and the other boys when they first got here, she was entering her jr year.

“So he’s back this time?”

“Yea...so he says.”

“Shouldn’t you be happier? With a skip in your step? Last year you cried because he didn’t show up at all.”

“I didn’t cry! I didn’t give a shit.” 

“I still don’t understand how you two are so close.”

“Me and Minho? Close? Ha."

“What the hell did he do to you that you basically want him dead?”

“When you put it that way you make it sound like I hate him.”

“I have good reasons to...” She murmured under her breathe and rolled her eyes at Jisung.

“I don’t hate him.” Jisung looked in the direction of Minho, “I just don’t want him in the same room as me.” 

“Wonder why?”

“Alright kid, go!” Jeongin yelled to the next kid waiting his turn to go down the slide. 

“He looked like he could be your older brother.” Felix whispered to Jeongin as that said kid pushed himself down the slide.

“Go eat your freckles.”

“So he can get more?” Changbin cheered as he walked behind them and roughened up Jeongin’s hair, “Now you’re using your head.”

“You like my freckles?” Felix shyly hit Changbin’s arm and he nodded almost instantly with joy, “I would be a fool not to!”

“I’m gonna vomit on the both of you.” No one really understands Changbin and Felix’s relationship, not even the two. They share glances, flirts, skin ship around the others, and go to the other in the need of relief on some daring nights. The conversation of becoming serious never really happened even if they want it to. Chan and Woojin, being the good observers they are, would call the two cluelessly in love.  

“You still never told me why Minho left sophomore year.” 

“You were gonna tell him and not me? The disrespect, Changbin.” Jeongin exclaimed into the conversation the other two were about to have.  

“I had to tell my favorite first.”

“Well tell me!”

“Apparently he had a sexual identity crisis or is still having one? I don’t really know, he wasn’t so detailed in how he said it.” 

“Good on him!”

“So that means he had so much sex during the time he never saw him. Damn.”

“Doesn’t have to mean that at all.”

“How else would he know if he likes the dick or vagina and might fuck around for both?”

“He got you there.”

“Don’t side with him, Binnie!”

Jisung laid out in the tower’s chair long enough to fall asleep since it’s the only time he’ll be able to. All was well until Minho splashed water in his face to tell him to get up for his scheduled break.

“No splashing, asshole.” Jisung stood up from his chair and wiped his face with the end of his shirt. A little skin showed that Minho stared for only seconds and of course Jisung didn’t see.

“Couldn’t use my sweet charm to wake you or I would’ve gotten another punch to the face like this morning. How else should I wake you up?”

“Don’t.”

“That’s no fun.” Jisung rolled his eyes as he walked past and Minho followed right behind him. They both sat at the snack bar controlled by Seungmin and Hyunjin. 

“At least my name isn’t a generic one!” 

“There were like ten jays in our graduating class!”

“All spelled with an y but not mine because I’m different and better.”

“His name isn’t even Brian.” Seungmin handed them both water bottles and Jae tsked, “You won’t get it.” 

“The last time I checked Seungmin doesn’t get anything.” Minho grinned and Seungmin forced a smile back, “Shut up.” Hyunjin gave Jisung’s usual of an ice tea with a lemon and tossed Minho a water bottle. The summer wasn’t suppose to turn out like this. Jisung wasn’t ready for this sudden change, isn’t. Maybe he really does hate Minho? Or maybe it’s something else? Let’s look at some signs. When Minho talks Jisung can’t help but listen even if he makes it look like he isn’t, he hates that. Jisung accidentally used Minho’s shoulder as a pillow the other day during the Mario Kart session and Minho didn’t mind it, he hated that. It has to be when Minho smiles at him and he gets all warm on the inside because he loves that. Oh shit. Fuck it’s something else!  

“What are you plotting in your head over there?” Jisung jumped at the question and looked up at Hyunjin sighing, “Nothing important.” It just has to be something else and not that I hate his fucking guts instead. Dumb stupid brain! 

“At least he knows that his opinion is invalid.” Minho shrugged his shoulders to Hyunjin.

“I’m gonna wring your fucking neck in.” 

“Oh you won’t do anything you big baby! You could punch me in the face for real and I’ll feel nothing.” Jisung cocked an eyebrow at him and punched him dead in the nose. Minho groaned at the sudden pain and Hyunjin sighed, “I’ll get the ice.” Jisung looked at Minho with a blank stare and walked away.

“You good, Minho?” Hyunjin handed him an ice pack and nodded.

“Did he really have to hit me?” He whined as the ice pack made his nose burn with the contact.

“To be fair your face is punch able- I mean you tempted him and Jisung never bluffs.”

“Maybe I should only bother him in the morning. That punch he gave me in the morning felt like nothing!”

“Or you could just not bother him?”

“Don’t ruin my fun, Hyunjin.” Minho tsked and Hyunjin put his hands up in defense. In the meantime, instead of dealing with the situation he caused Jisung hid away in a changing room until closing time.

The boys laid down in the living room bored out of their minds. Since some of them didn’t have a shift in the morning they got to stay inside. The lucky four stayed inside, played some games, and even cleaned  the place up a little bit. Mostly Chan and Woojin did.

“What should we eat tonight?”

“Ramen?” Chan shrugged his shoulders at Woojin and the other whined, “We had that last night.”

“Then cook something.”

“My cooking is bad.”

“Okay, I’ll do it.”

“Your cooking is even worst.” Woojin said the final blow and Chan clicked his tongue then dialed a pizza place. Seungmin giggled at the two as Woojin grinned happily at Chan.

“It will be here in 20.”

“What will?” Minho walked in the room after just taking a shower and sat down on the couch across from them.  

“Pizza!” Seungmin cheered and Jeongin cheered along with him,“Finally some good fucking food!”

“Where did the other four go?”

“Chan complained about there being no dishes so they went to IKEA.”

“Fuck off, Jeongin. I only said there is a lack of silverware and they were going to IKEA anyway.”

“For what?”

“Changbin wanted frozen yogurt.” Minutes later they came back from the store just in time for there to still be pizza left over. Felix and Hyunjin fought over a slice, Changbin pushed them out the way for two more slices. Everyone hung out on the couch watching some really bad TV while some commented on it or they talked about what happened at work. Jisung stayed in the kitchen part, he didn’t bother trying to communicate with others today. It’s been a total of two days since he punched Minho in the face. Minho still continues to wake him up even if he’s sleeping, ‘If I’m up you must be too.’ The thing about that is Jisung is always up in the middle of the night as the others get a goodnight's sleep. He doesn’t know why he does it. It’s always been this way since he was little, he got it from his grandfather. Just a couple of months ago his grandfather died from insomnia and yes you can say that Jisung is slowly going down that path too. The others don’t know anything about it except for Woojin and it’s better that way. They shouldn’t have to worry about it too.

“Did you get any sleep last night?” Woojin always asks him whenever the others are distracted so they don’t overhear the conversation. Jisung appreciates that.

"Kind of....like 3 or more hours."

"It wasn't cause of a nightmare this time, right?"

"Yea.....just couldn't sleep."

“You know I’m always ready to stay up with you so you’re not alone.”

“I know but it’s okay.” Jisung smiled at him and Woojin shared one back after patting him on the back. Woojin went back to the others and Jisung stayed in the kitchen. Maybe I’ll get some sleep this week? It only started.... He can only hope. 3 hours of sleep can only be enough to get him through the day until he falls asleep in the middle of doing something. He once had his doctors prescribe him some sleeping medication. It’s not a big deal........really. Some people won’t get it. Some people don’t get it even after it is explained to them by multiple of people. Jisung has had too many experiences with that and they all ended bad. Excuse him if he doesn’t to go through that.......pain again.

New’s Atlas Subluxation and chronic illness timeline

It’s in my nature at this point to document things and it’s smart to keep track of my healing post-procedure anyway, so I might as well make a timeline here and share the experience as usual :p 

Feel free to ask any questions, it doesn’t bother me at all. We need to let patients be teachers too, I think. 

So here is my atlas subluxation and chronic illness timeline with backstory leading up to the procedure before it gets super specific with dates. I will try to update this during my healing as much as I can to document changes. 1989: Born December 29th at a 3 1/2 lbs. Taken out prematurely because there was a complication with the umbilical cord and I was no longer growing. I had to stay in an incubator for 11 days until I weighed enough to go home, which was 5 1/2 lbs. It’s unclear whether or not the subluxation was present after birth; it’s possibly that I could’ve been pulled out in a way that caused it, but we have the next event as a definite marker for when things started getting worse. 

Summer of 1996, age 6: While playing with sister I accidentally fractured my collar bone. I went up into the air, I remember seeing the ceiling coming closer, and then I fell straight down onto my back pretty hard. I cried and cried and said over and over again, “I broke something, I broke something” until they took me to the hospital. I vividly remember how I shook when they put me on the table to x-ray me. The doctor cheered me up by pointing out the gas in my chest. But basically they were like yep, there’s a fracture right there. And they sent me home with a sling. I remember that it had dinosaurs on it and it made me happy.

1996~2000, age 6 to 10: Always sick. Daily stomach aches, digestive issues leading to restrictive diet, nausea, back pain, bad posture, fatigue, insomnia, nightmares, sleepwalking, always cold, chronic bronchitis, hypersensitivity to stimulus like sound, light, color, taste, smell, temperature, and even experiences whether positive or negative, auditory processing disorder making it hard to understand what people said, problems with being “too excitable” and having intense reactions to rejection which was hard because I was constantly bullied and controlled by peers for being “weird” and “different”. I struggled in most subjects, but especially math, and I could never really handwrite properly, even to this day. School in general was just very hard because I never felt well and couldn’t keep up with others. Crying on the floor meltdowns whenever there are loud sports games or if a friend goes home early from a sleepover or if a parent gets mad at me (or I think they are). These meltdowns persisted into adulthood. I was always just called dramatic for them.

2001~2009, age 11 to 19: Middleschool and highschool were even harder. I struggled in most classes except for creative ones. Health problems persisted: first sleep paralysis with hallucations episode at age 12 or 13 and often had episodes after school that would eat up my early evening and wear me out mentally, still had problems with bronchitis, ovarian cyst caused me a lot of pain and missed classes, then I started having even worse digestive problems. By age 15 I had my first upper endoscopy and colonoscopy where they discovered ulcers in my esophagus, stomach, and intestines. Feelings of isolation, unable to feel like I could connect with people, noticeable depression, loneliness. First vomiting panic attack at age 17. At 19 did a homestay in Japan; an amazing experience but made difficult by vomiting, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety leaving the house and exploring by myself and freaking out when I got lost.

2010~2016, age 20-26: Health problems begin to worsen in early adulthood. Age 21: I’m vomiting a few times a week and having a ton of other problems, diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Sleep and fatigue problems making it hard to work at my retail job especially while I’m in college. Age 23: suddenly the sleep paralysis and insomnia are impossible to manage and I go several months with very little sleep, getting worse and worse, every day having looong hard sleep paralysis episodes that leave me with horrible headaches and slurring like I’m drunk. I still go to auditions and work jobs I book as best as I can but get a narcolepsy diagnosis after a long process of sleep study and being yanked around by insurance not letting me actually see the neurologist for my diagnosis. Depression is getting to the point where it almost paralyzes me but I do my best. Health problems cause fights with family. Age 24: not long after the narcolepsy diagnosis: the pain and fatigue become excessive and debilitating and I get the fibromyalgia diagnosis. Condition worsens and worsens, a bump forms on my upper spine that causes horrific pain and distress. 2014 I’m in the ER/urgent care 4 times because the pain makes it unable to rest or stop vomiting for days on end (the most being 6 days where I lost 12lbs). I go to an Ayurvedic healing center because the doctors were useless. There is some improvement but I still struggle, at least I had a lot of good coping tools to keep myself a live, if only barely at times. In bed most days in horrible pain and exhausted by simple things such as getting up to use the restroom. Depression is horrible and a cloud of suicidal urges hang over me for almost 2 years because I feel like a failure who is ruining my family’s happiness by being sick and I feel an intense hatred for myself. I try to work a very mellow part time job at a perfumery but the pain makes it too hard and I’m eventually let go.   Age 25: Depression persists but I force myself to start doing background TV/film work on a weekly basis. Making money helps calm me but it’s incredibly difficult with my health problems and I often vomit on set from fatigue and pain. I start seeing a chiropractor to help alleviate the pain and depression. It helps but I have to see him twice a week at first, then once, then every other week, but during a flare up it’s back to once a week. I also start seeing an acupuncturist which helps with organ function and eases some symptoms but I still have to see her regularly and the expenses add up and cause more problems with my family since I’m barely able to afford them on my own.  Age 26: I get a part time job in retail to help supplement me while I do background work. With the skills I learned I’m able to manage things but I still suffer a lot every day and don’t sleep well because of the pain. Later in the year I stop doing bg work and get an additional part time job. I had accepted long ago that I would be in pain for the rest of my life and that all these tiny minimum wage paychecks I worked so hard through agony for would just go straight into managing my symptoms. I accepted that by age 45 I might be bedridden but at least I was doing my best now in my 20′s and I needed to accept whatever time my body had on this planet and do my best to be a source of light for others going through the same thing.

Starting the week of the December 18th, 2016, I have a lot of work days in a row and I’m slammed with auditions. It’s getting colder and colder, my pain is higher, I don’t have much time to rest. By Christmas Eve I’m in bed all the day with only short sporadic moments up to pee or try to soothe the depression with an activity. It’s so bad I can barely last 20 minutes at times before I have to stumble back to bed green in the face and weak.

This flare up continued until Wednesday, January 11th, 2017. 25 days of high pain and fatigue levels and going a few weeks only able to eat yogurt and a few crackers with one or two proper meals a week if I can. Lots of throwing up, usually two nights in a row, maybe a little break, and then back to it, just horrible persistent deep nausea. This is why I got down to 103lbs. Oops.

So, here’s where the timeline of atlas subluxation discovery and treatment starts:

12.18.16 ~ 1.11.17: Flare up from hell that wouldn’t end. It was suddenly back to the intense high levels I had back in 2014 when I didn’t know all these pain management techniques. Naturally, I was terrified and used every possible coping technique possible to get through it. Since it was so high I was just. Hoo. Each day was a rollercoaster. The pain gives me hella moodswings. Zip, zip, had to just keep it zipped as much as I could so I didn’t look like an asshole. If I had to work one shift I basically had to make sure I didn’t do ANYTHING beforehand to save those spoons and keep the pain from spiking, but I didn’t want to pass up auditions so I forced myself to a few. The pain got so bad I couldn’t even sit up in bed most nights. Missed a lot of work. Had to meditate like crazy to keep positive thoughts in the front of my brain but it was very difficult.

1.5.17: Barely clinging to positivity but trying my best, since I’m always in bed I work up the strength with a LOT of rest and pain management to play a little Pokemon. Meanwhile I’m trying to work on gross crunchy calcium in the back of my neck (yeah, it’s nasty) and this huge chunk comes off inside my neck, like just... a crunchy chip floating in there that I could move and scrape against my neck

1.6.17: Appointment with primary care physician to update her on my rapidly worsening condition and talk to her about atlas subluxation. She got flustered and was saying, ��this isn’t something the healthcare system considers as treatment” and I was like WHY and at this point I was done being pushed around and I said many times, “Sorry, I just need you to hear everything that I’m saying” as I went over this whole page of notes I made for her about how this procedure could give me my life back. I lamb’d her into submission in order to get her to write several referrals to try to find someone. All she could do was refer me to the bone doctor and the neurologist.

GUYS IT’S LITERALLY LIKE, oh, your brain and body are breaking down because this one bone might be out of place? It’s that simple and obvious and we can find it in x-rays easily if we know what we’re looking for and there are already specialists who do this specific adjustment around the world?

Hmm... nahhh... nah... don’t even check there. Just treat this girl’s depression and pain with drugs FIRST, before we determine that it’s the organs themselves with the deficiency. We’ll just try that and see what happens, $50 please. I have been on 3 different depression/anxiety meds, zofran, xanax, ativan, tramadol, various colon steroids?? Just a ton of crap.

Even knowing I will need to pay an atlas doc out of pocket, I get so depressed that I can’t even bring myself to make a phone call for an appointment. 

1.11.17: Crying and screaming level of pain, very weak, depression so intense all I could think while obviously very, very ill was “I’m the worst/I should die/I’m just a problem/I’m ruining my dad’s life/I’m an unreliable loser and all my coworkers and employers think I’m lazy and dumb/no one likes me because I’m too weird and always sick” etc etc. My dad almost took me to the hospital because the pain was just way too intense and making me lose my shit. 

1.12.17, day of procedure: In the morning my dad called me and suggested we just do it, just call one of those specialists. I was in no state to make phone calls so he did it for me. He picked the closest one and called her. He said, “my daughter has fibromyalgia and she’s in bad shape” and the doctor said we could come in that day.

My dad took me to do errands after. I got really tired and had pain but it was still very different. We picked up some suggestions the doc gave me to help my body during the healing process. 1.15.17, day 3: Back to work at my retail job. Kind of difficult because I’m under strict orders from the doctor not to lift more than 5lbs as not to make my atlas go back out of whack. Lots of pain and fatigue by noon from having to use my body so much. But brain is still sharp, having fun with customers.  On my break I start looking up atlas subluxation and how it affects a child’s brain development since I realize that this means that I grew up with a compressed brain stem. 1.16.17, day 4: Day off. Pain levels got pretty high so I did my best to rest a lot. Slept in until 9am, managed to do 5 pushups, yoga, and some light hula hooping. Had a good breakfast and got about an hour of editing done by 11:30 before I was just way too tired, so I napped until a little after 1 and had a small lunch. The pain wasn’t so bad, it was mostly fatigue. I ended up needing another 30 minute nap before I went to work. I felt kind of depressed but I’m not sure if it’s because of my worry about work. I worked today and I have to work tomorrow, I’m just worried 2 days in a row will be rough like it usually is. I still really wish I could just take time off completely and not force myself through these shifts. But I don’t want to lose my jobs. :( We’ll see. Epic upper body spasm while trying to make a snack 1.18.17, day 6: I slept really well despite waking up randomly at 3. I felt calm and warm without my heated blanket on for awhile, and fell back asleep easily. I ate a really good breakfast and lunch and work wasn’t too bad. I’m still very sore and aching, and having to move around so much definitely doesn’t help that. My mood was back up again, but I do feel a bit emotionally overwhelmed by all this information. I feel like I’m in a weird transitory period (but who doesn’t?). I’m between jobs, still. I don’t think I want another job in my field, despite how much I love it. I just don’t feel like I’m cut out for it. I’m considering grad school in another field, not sure which yet. I still live at home. still got my mom helping me with a lot, but soon I won’t have her for health insurance. my health situation is still a big question mark but soon I may have to change my diet pretty drastically. I’ve been depressed since I was 17 and I’ve learned how to deal with it but I know I need medication, and I’m still not on the right ones yet. I just kind of feel like I’m waiting for something to give. for something big to change; something to change for the better.

it’s nice to look back on myself from 3, 4, 5, 6 years ago and know I’ve changed a lot. mostly for the better, in a few other ways not so much. I’m 20 days away from 25. I’m still young, I have a lot more growing and learning to do, still. there’s time to right the things that went wrong. that’s comforting.

I can’t blame others for the things that I don’t like about myself, necessarily. other people did have a hand in molding me into the person I am right now, but ultimately it was my problem that I let those things shape me.

all through schooling, all through growing up, I had things I liked, things I’d get excited about. other people often didn’t share those things, and sometimes I’d end up in a situation where I’d be talking excitedly about something and get made fun of. poked at. given that “uhhuh...” half-smile that told me nobody actually cared. get ignored completely. it was hard for me to keep things in, though, and as I got older I learned to embrace the “weird” label. after years of berating myself, of course. why couldn’t I just be like everyone else? why couldn’t I just shut up? 

hardly anyone noticed me in school, especially after I moved to virginia. friends, more than that. my best friend had boy after boy throwing themselves at her feet, but people would pass us both in the hallways (as we were rarely without each other before or after classes) and only say hi to her. I had my crushes, but they never worked out. some, I heard, were a little weirded out about it, if they found out. I’d never made any passes at anyone. I learned to keep my distance even further. I learned very quickly that me having feelings was a bad thing; people would feel weird about it if I was the one that liked them. I wasn’t something that could be liked in return. 

college was a different story. I didn’t know how to react to the sudden change in attitudes. at the time I was still hopeful, too. I thought I’d lost that hope in high school; I hadn’t. I mostly let it out on twitter, or on here; my tags for two of them specifically still hold all the posts I reblogged that you’d never see me reblogging today. it was even uncomfortable for me at the time to admit I felt that way, but I knew I did. me? wanting to kiss someone? cuddle? unheard of. but please? sometimes it’d come out in conversation when I was upset. I got hurt. so bad. a lot of that was my own fault; thinking things were more than they were. I’d never had anything like that before. I assumed, given my past, that if they wanted anything to do with me they must have really liked me. and if they liked me, how could they? I was so scared to show affection after. 

A got so weirded out by it. the day I told him I had feelings for him, he went quiet. I knew he didn’t have feelings, but it hurt to hear it. I felt so different with him. I felt I was on equal footing, though I worried I still felt more for him than he did for me. I learned later that he’d told a friend that he knew he was wasting his time with me. I wasn’t supposed to be anything; I was some cute girl at a friend’s game night, I was another meaningless hookup, I was an accidental, unexpected crush. and then I was gone. he married the next girl. I think he still refers to me as an “ex” (I was surprised when I found out his wife really didn’t want to see me when I visited that first winter; apparently she didn’t want an “ex” around). but it was only 3.5 weeks that we were ‘unofficially official’. it wasn’t anything. I wasn’t anything. I can rely on those 3.5 weeks of my life to tell myself that I’m not unloveable. to tell myself that sometimes it can be a good thing when I show affection. but it’s hard. it was only a few weeks. versus the entire rest of my life.

I gave both of them little things. it was a way for me to show affection that didn’t have to mean anything; I’d do the same for friends (or almost the same; it always meant a little more to me, but they didn’t have to know that). I wanted to show them I cared about them and appreciated them, regardless of romantic feelings. hand-painted canvases of favorite album covers. custom bass rosin. a favorite band’s favorite album, that I’d gotten signed by the whole band at a show. a dice bag crocheted from icelandic wool, made to look like a dragon egg. insomnia cookies, as an apology for almost giving them strep one time. a pick tool made for cleaning out tobacco pipes (but equally useful for bowls and grinders); just as satisfying for me that he immediately got up and threw out his container of toothpicks. that was the safest way I could think of, to show affection. it’s the one part of young, hopeful me that I think managed to stay intact. I still really enjoy finding things people like and giving them something from the heart, but for them. 

looking at it, though, I don’t think I’m permanently changed. sometimes it feels like it. but I also haven’t had any chances to fix it. my last therapist told me, basically, that I need to take a risk. I can’t learn to trust other people with my full self if I don’t take a chance on anyone. and I know she’s right. I do feel like I kind of am where I’ve been for the last few years, though; I haven’t been talking to much of anyone, and I haven’t cared to try. the loneliness doesn’t bite as hard as it used to. I worry about my distant future sometimes, but it doesn’t do me any good to, especially when I don’t even know where I’m going to be a year from now.

some things do feel deadened. but they’re numbed, not necrotic. I’m young, I (hopefully) have a lot of life left to live. all this only happened over the course of a few years, starting 5.5 years ago or so. I’ve had my time away. I realized she’d been doing it my whole life and I hadn’t even noticed. it became a part of me before I could even understand that it was bad.  turning down compliments and in the same breath putting herself down: oh, thanks, but I didn’t deserve that win, my forehand is terrible and I missed so many shots. acting sad over my normal puberty weight gain: well maybe if you didn’t eat so much... putting others down for no reason: wow, what happened to her? she looked so much better in that show 30 years ago, she looks just awful now. general prejudice; most often I remember her repeating non-anglo-sounding names with a judgmental bent (which my brother would also do), talking about things people did and adding in their race or gender as if that was an important factor (Asian, Indian drivers especially). I still cringe at the memory of the parroted reasoning I had for not wanting to take Spanish classes in middle school (I don’t want to work at McDonald’s when I’m older) ((newsflash, 13yo me, Spanish classes were one of the best parts of high school, the reason you ended up making some of the coolest friends in Brazil, and what set you on the path to getting a degree in linguistics. Spanish, first of all, is a European language that was spoken primarily by white people until they colonized the countries native to Latino people, and not wanting to learn Spanish because you don’t want to be like the primarily Spanish-speaking people that often work at McDonald’s, a job deemed degrading as well, is, like, super racist)). 

I learned so much from her. I learned to discount my achievements. I learned to focus on the negatives (and later she’d get on my case for being negative, like... where’d I learn that, I wonder?). I learned snap judgments. I learned to hate the normal changes my body went through; called myself fat when I was a perfectly normal size for my age, simply because I had a tiny, tiny little pocket of fat on my belly and my thighs were growing. 

I’m glad I unlearned a lot of that. nobody’s perfect, I’m still learning every day. but I really need to work on the negativity especially. that’s something that’s been so deeply ingrained I really don’t know how to work my way out of it. it’s so painfully easy to be like that. I hope that, if one day I can afford therapy, that’ll be an area they can help me with. and I don’t think it’s impossible. it’s just re-wiring. re-training. it’s something I’ll need to work at, it’s something I expect to stumble over. but I want to be better. 

that’s the whole thing about it. I want to. I’m sick of being how I am, I’m sick of being sick of how I am. instead of complaining about it, I need to just. pick up the pieces. splash some bleach water around in my brain, scrub at it. I was sick of living in a cluttered mess, so I gathered up a ton of clothes, books, etc. to donate or throw out and I completely changed the energy of my bedroom. I know there’s more I can do, and it would certainly help to have more space, but I was determined and I did the damn thing. I can marie-kondo the fuck out of my brain too.

and there’s no fingers to point, really. it can’t be my fault for growing up and absorbing the world around me, learning from experience and developing theoretical models based on that experience. it can’t be the fault of others who didn’t know better either. but I am responsible for changing it. this isn’t me, this isn’t how I am. it may be for right now, but I think it speaks more to my character that I want to fix the parts that don’t work right, so they don’t harm others or continue to harm me. 

there’s certainly things I like about myself. my strength, my independence (for the most part), my determination (even when it borders on stubbornness). my hunger for knowledge, my heart, when it works right. also things I’ve had to learn, but things I’m genuinely proud of. 

I’m just not in a very good place right now, but I know that. I’m still recovering from some of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through. I can discount the impact of those things all I want; I can deny that they affected me negatively if I want. that doesn’t change facts. I was taken advantage of, many times, before I knew better. I watched pets suffer, tried to revive a few to no avail. I watched my dad carried out of his apartment in a body bag; felt his cold, stiff hand before I said goodbye. I didn’t even get to say goodbye. I fucked up the best job prospect I could have had out of college, and I had to do a lot of soul-searching to be able to accept my faults and accept that they did play a part in my own failures. I have had to deal with so much pain alone, and I am not in any position to be my own therapist. it doesn’t do any good for me to be upset with myself for how I am right now; to berate myself for it or try to blame myself or others. I just need to reassure myself that it can change. I’ve got time, I’ve got the determination. recognizing it is just step one, but sometimes even that can be hard for people.

and it’s not an overhaul, either. I’m not aiming to change my entire personality. I just want to do better. to feel better. there’s a way I imagine feeling when I picture myself in that craftsman house out near the oregon coast. looking across my lavender plants on a cool morning with a blanket wrapped around my shoulders; croissant in one hand, hot chocolate in the other. I don’t actually know what that feeling is. I sometimes worry that it’ll be the same as the feeling I had at my first farm jam, when I was stretched out in a hammock in the woods. I should’ve felt better. I was finally with friends. I was in the woods on a beautiful day, nothing I had to do besides looking up at the trees and leaves and blue sky. and I felt so empty. like if that couldn’t make me feel good, nothing could.

I know what contentedness feels like. wanting to hit the pause button and just be where I am for a few moments longer. I hope one day, if I can make it to where I want to be, it’ll be that instead.

I was in a car accident 4 days ago. My Mother was the passenger in my car (I was driving). I was on the off ramp getting off the freeway. All cars behind me were stopped. I was stopped waiting to make a right turn. An emergency vehicle was coming in my direction from my left. Therefore, I was waiting for the emergency vehicle to pass. The person behind me (large dodge ram truck I am in an '08 2 door Infiniti coupe) thought I went so he 'gunned it' to get in front of the emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, we had not gone so he pushed my vehicle out in front of the emergency vehicle. Luckily, I was able to turn my car out of the way. I did not hit anyone (no one was in front of me). My Mother and I were both put into a gurney and taken to a local hospital in an ambulance. We both had our seat belts on and suffered whiplash. We were released 5-6 hours later after x-rays, etc. We were both prescribed medicine. My Mother has had 3 brain tumors and has trouble with her speech etc. and any violent startling trauma can get her shaken up pretty badly and confused. I know she hit her head but, she is in pain but not nearly as much as I am. With my Mother's condition I don't know if this kind of thing can have negative effects later on. I know that my neck and back is pretty messed up. It hurts to stand for after 15 minutes or so. My car is pretty messed up and had to be towed. I plan on taking it back to the Infiniti shop to get all new parts. My car has all the upgrades in it so I want it to be taken care of. Am I allowed to take it to the Infiniti dealership or will Geico (the other persons insurance) not allow that, or does it not matter? The police gave the guy that hit us a citation. I have USAA and the other person has Geico. I just want to know exactly what to do in this situation. Since I'm out a car (I work for myself) I have been out (already) a decent amount of money for not being able to meet up with my clients. I spoke to my insurance today and they said that all my medical is covered since I had that already in my plan (without it raising my premium) and that I should get a settlement ON TOP of paying for damages to my car and getting me a rental, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to get taken for a ride. I've heard the horror stories of dealing with insurance companies. About 5 years ago I started doing this little mental trick… if there was some small thing I needed to do I just counted to 3 in my head and did it. Stuff like “1,2,3: put on my workout clothes”, “1,2,3: empty the dishwasher”, “1,2,3: answer that email”, “1,2,3: turn the TV off”.

I promised myself that every “1,2,3” would be something I could achieve in less than 10 minutes and that I would never fail to do something once I finished the countdown. I was amazed at how many of life’s problems were solved by overcoming those little moments of inertia during the day.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much more productive in the mornings I became. Now making my bed is almost like hitting the “I’m not tired anymore” switch in my brain.
