#I feel like Susanna Clarke really enjoyed playing with the ambiguity of whether Childermass is referred to as Norrell's representative#or as a magic-user himself; there's no doubt he's not the same kind of magician as Strange and Norrell but there's something odd about him#And I love it when you come across phrases like this where at face value it looks like Childermass is the magician#even though a smarter brain would say that he's only being addressed like that because he's Mr Norrell's representative#But then the latter brain which has got used to the customs of the world of the novel might be wrong and overlooking the obvious#UGH the subtle exploration of class and station and all of its varied meanings#Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell#John Childermass#books#reading log
