Why pay when you got it for free π
right okay so at the end of Artemis Fowl Butler is surprised that Artemis gave back half the ransom money, and when he asks about it the only answer he gets is "for services rendered." At this point, as far as Butler is aware, the only service Holly has rendered is saving Butler's life. BUT Butler doesn't believe that was everything Artemis was referring to, which means there was something else Artemis was willing to pay for besides his bodyguard's life, meaning as far as both Artemis and Butler are concerned, Butler's life is worth less than whatever else Artemis was planning. And Butler doesn't balk at this. AND, since Artemis used the ransom fund to buy a wish to heal his mother and not as a thank-you for saving Butler's life, that means, essentially, Butler's life is worth less than the ransom to Artemis. Anyways, I'll be over here chewing on the drywall.
#he's a businessman#a little businessman#there's probably a clause in their contract for a bonus if Butler gets killed on the job#but it IS interesting how he doesn't disclose to Butler what services Holly did to earn the gold back#he really bargained away half the ransom on the off chance that his mother could and would be healed#and was too afraid to admit it in case it failed#I don't think he wanted anyone's pity even though it was obvious to both Butler and Juliet how much slowly losing her was hurting him#artemis fowl
