Island life hadn’t been all that you had expected.
There were many beautiful sides to it. In ways, it was the best decision of your life. You’d wished to escape the stress and monotony of your previous everyday and you had succeeded. Now, you woke up every day to fresh sea air and sunshine filtering in through your blinds. No stress, no true responsibilities. You could busy yourself with walking around, catching bugs, fishing and relaxing. Even if the island was isolated, for you, for the ones for who the burden of modern society was too heavy, this was the dream.
But there has always been one more thing on your list of expectations; close bonds with the other people here, in your little haven away from the rest of the world. It’d been that way, at first. But one by one, your close friends moved away. Never with much reason, they’d seemed happy before. Your heart ached every time you had to say goodbye to another one. Soon enough, constant streams of villager came and went until the faces nearly blurred together in your mind. You kept up pleasantries, of course, but getting to know them was another story. You didn’t want to say goodbye again.
Though you were certain it was all in your head, it had to be, you still felt insecure that it all had something to do with you. That it was your fault, somehow. Whenever you asked Tom or Isabelle, they claimed it was against the customer’s privacy to tell you such things. Which was fair, you guessed. They were two of the few people on the island that became a constant. Despite the villagers around you changing at a steady pace, they never left your side. They’d become a crutch. Even though they had busy schedules, they still listened to you when you stopped by.
It was hard to admit, but you depended on the two of them more than you should. The stability there was a welcome change.
After another afternoon of hunting bugs in the buzzing spring air, you entered the town hall, remainders of sweat still on your brow. "Good afternoon!" Isabelle's voice rung out from behind the desk, sending you a smile as she dusted off the desks in the back. Tom also sent you a greeting of his own, nodding at you, before he began furiously typing on his laptop once more.
Both busy, as usual. It was no surprise, the two never stopped having things to do. A twinge of guilt made you falter in your step for a moment, still, they always reassured you that your visits never bothered them. After claiming your daily Nook miles at the terminal, you plopped into a chair, leaning your head on your hand while waiting for Isabelle to come over.
"Any news on the residents?" It was the same question from you every day and the answer was often no different, either. You could simply fear having more work to do and another farewell to prepare.
"Ah-" Her lips quirked down. Whether her sadness was feigned or not, you didn’t have the mind to worry about at the moment. "I'm sorry, I know she hasn’t been here for long, but Pinkie told me she was leaving earlier today.”
Your head was already going over all the things you'd need to organise as the island representative. Sure, these two did their part as well and you were forever thankful, however, you still needed to see islanders off. Once Tom found another future resident, you’d have to pick a good spot, introduce yourself, show them around all the nice spots, become their friend-
“Are you alright?” Your head snapped to the side, body jolting. Lost in thought, you hadn’t even noticed he’d taken his chair and put it closer to Isabelle’s, his brow furrowed and a warm hand against your arm.
“I’m… Oh.” About to say you were fine, like you always did, you found that your cheeks were wet. You weren’t sure when you’d started crying. The realization only made it so that you shook more. Cracks appeared in the appearance you’d kept up for so long and the moment it started, it became impossible to put a stop to. Your cheeks burned, you couldn’t look either of them in the eye. Of course you’d have a breakdown, how humiliating.
Isabelle immediately started fussing, patting your head and spilling comforting words that refused to quite reach your ears yet. She looked nearly as distressed as yourself nearly and throughout your tears, you cracked a smile. It didn’t last long. Her worry was just so obvious and genuine that it felt kind of nice. “No one’s been bothering you, right?” She asked, grabbing your other hand and squeezing it.
“No! Not at all. I’m just… Tired,” You admitted with a trembling voice, staring at the droplets that dripped onto the desk. Above your head, unknown to you, Tom and Isabelle exchanged a knowing glance. “I don’t mind being the representative, I like it, but I keep on having to welcome and say goodbye to new people! It feels like I… I barely know anyone here. I show them around and they never stay long. It’s like…” You trailed off, incapable of speaking your insecurities out loud after all. Silence hung in the air for a couple of moments.
“Yes, yes, it’s obvious. You need a break. You’ve been overworking yourself, hm?” Tom said, touch still comforting.
“...We were actually worried about you for a bit now.” Isabelle continued, head tilted to the side as she observed you. “You looked tired all the time. I know we’re on a tropical island already, still-! What about a vacation? You should relax, take care of yourself!”
You perked up, eyes flickering from Isabelle’s to Tom’s face. It wasn’t what you were expecting. “Uh, are you sure? Both of you have enough to do already- I don’t want to cause you trouble.”
“I insist!” Isabelle said, looking sheepish moments later at her own loudness. “Like I said, we noticed before, so we might have made some preparations…”
“She’s right, yes, yes. I have a guest room you can stay at, it’ll be a little change of scenery. So, what do you say, hm?” He smiled, an attempt to cheer you up as well. “I won’t even change any rent.”
By now, you were aware he was far from upset with money, but still, it’d become somewhat of an inside joke. You snorted. “That’s a first.” You played along. The prospect of spending more time around Timmy and Tommy was also nice, they were sweet kids. Wiping the tears from your face, you picked up the parts of yourself. You smiled, the expression coming naturally.
“Thank you, both of you, really.” Smile turned into a grin. “When do I come over?”
