Note
can i ask who some of your fav characters are from woh ?
YES!
Okay, my first fav would be Ye Baiyi, although I think I hated him at the beginning? (XD) He's so funny and harsh but also a softie, I love him hahah.
Then uh, I'll tell you some other characters that I probably didn't care much about at first or kinda hated them, but now I like for several reasons (dunno, my feelings change so fast sometimes gsbsbsbs).
I like the character of Gu Xiang because she's always kicking ass XD and also has a cute personality.
Du Pusa (Evil Boddisatva) and Changing Ghost, but just because they make me laugh every time they are in the scene gsbsbsbs even if they do very bad things to people. And well, there's only glimpses that could be no more than my mind elaborating headcanons that are not there but they seem to have some soft edges there too? (will not elaborate for now but if you want to know any moment I'll tell you).
Should I mention Prince Jin? I hate him but also find him so funny because uh facial expressions and also he's tragic and pathetic (affectionate), lonely and sad but because he did everything to end like that. Sorry Prince Jin.
Then about Han Ying, I needed more of him tbh because he's so 😭😭😭 I wanted to give him a hug every time he appeared.
Also but perhaps in a less level, I like Liu Qian Qiao (will try not to spoil anything here, dunno how much have you watched already) because of her disguising skills and her refusal to drink the Water of Lethe so she could remember her past mistakes and not making them again, mainly. But there are other things, attitudes and ideas mostly, that I didn't like in this character and that's why sometimes dunno how to feel about her (not gonna elaborate now bc it's probably spoiler but perhaps in a future). It's not related to the evilness tho XD. More to her tragedy and how she coped with it.
(okay it got a bit long but not much more, anyways it's better to shorten the post gsbsbs)
And well, I left my main (tragical) favs for the end XD. After yby, I believe they are my favs right now or the ones I'm most obsessed with (ah yes, the typical fixation on secondary and probably evil characters).
First Xie'er of course. At first I hated him too (wtf is wrong with me XD) but then we see his personality being developed along the series so how is it not possible to love him? (also he's very cute uwu XD). I find him tragic because he's mostly a puppet and most of the time he does what his yifu tells him to do, but he also has a kind heart, he's not just a callous assassin. In one interview Li Dai Kun (the actor who played Xie'er) said he had no personality, well, I actually think we get to see some of it sometimes (don't want to spoil anything, so just gonna say he does good for some people out of kindness and also he disobeys his yifu several times). And apart from that, he's very smart and cunning, charismatic, adaptable and resilient, knows everything about everyone and if not, he definitely knows how to get that information. And then he's also kind, caring, and utterly sad. I love him, wanna give him a hug.
And the other one is well, *sighs, people are gonna hate me for this* Zhao Jing. Of course, I know he's awful and manipulative and puts his goals above the people who care for him, even hurting them with no (apparent) remorse. I've wanted to do a longer analysis of this character for some time, but not now. Let's just say I had this idea of Zhao Jing after we finished the series, then watched an interview of Wang Ruolin (who played Zhao Jing) explaining his character and the idea I had changed completely. Well, perhaps not completely but as I started to watch the character more closely I realized that interpretation was there too, and probably that's what the actor intended to portray, but it's not obvious to us who see the character from the outside and have no idea of the real motivation behind his actions. I mean, that does not justify the wrong stuff he does at all, but helps to understand the character better (and I have this obsession with understanding everything to the last detail gsbsbsb).
Ooops this is getting too long so basically I'm gonna point out that for me Zhao Jing is an interesting character who was several layers and it's difficult to see the inner ones, he probably scores pretty high in psychopathic traits, but his heart is not completely lost I believe (maybe will elaborate in the future, you can always ask of course!). Also I find him very tragic because (1) he's so fucking paranoid and won't allow his loved ones to be themselves because he believes his own view of the world is the correct one and if they deviate from there they won't be able to survive (2) as he's fucking paranoid his thoughts are consumed by his plans and so he disregards his close relationships (3) he doesn't completely trust anyone until he realizes there was actually 1 person that he could rely on. That's why he is (almost) lonely, but he does not seem to care as Prince Jin does. (btw I also want to make an analysis bc I've found paralelisms between ZJ, Prince Jin and even Wen Kexing).
People hate him for understandable reasons (I believe one of the most important is the imbalance of power in the relationship he has with one character, dunno I've you've watched it so I won't spoiler. I understand it can be triggering for many people, especially if they have found themselves in a similar situation). But well, I also have to say something, and it's gonna be sarcastic so sorry in advance, I could be wrong too but I think another reason why most people hate him is that he's evil but not hot (XD) and he's older than the typical evil characters many people can get to like.
Okay, sorry again because I promised it would not be long but now you've had to read this whole text gsbsbs. Also I'd love to know about your favs one day, when you want to talk about them.
