"Dante doesn't go to heaven because how could he do that after he's just been walked through hell by Virgil. How would he leave his side after that? How would he accept those systems that he just walked through? That in another reading, he doesn't accept the legitimacy of this place and he doesn't go on into purgatory. He stays put and he says 'If you can't go, then I won't go either'.
Hozier talking about "Hymn to Virgil" last year during the YouTube Premium "De Selby Part 2" After party.

Hozier's Hymn to Virgil
Tumblr media
“There’s points where Virgil picks Dante up and carries him over certain places, and puts him on the back of beasts who fly him over ravines and all of this fantastical stuff. He holds this guy when he faints and trembles and weeps,” Hozier said. “Dante the living human in this poem is, like, horrified. And then he arrives at the end of it, and Virgil says, ‘Well, I can go no further.’ And Dante, the writer, knows on some level that Virgil is not a man who deserves to be in hell.”

Hozier really repeats the line “I would burn the world to bring some heat to you” an exact 9 times in Hymn to Virgil for the 9 circles of Hell-

Hozier really said “the girls (gender neutral) can have a little desperate homoerotic codependent yearning. As a treat” and I for one love him for that

Full interview on “Hymn to Virgil”. Super interesting.
“But the root of the conflict Hozier reimagines on the record is profoundly current, despite being written 500 years ago. It’s recognizing that someone you care for deserves more than what they’re being given. It’s refusing to betray them in the face of that. And then he arrives at the end of it, and Virgil says, ‘Well, I can go no further.’ And Dante, the writer, knows on some level that Virgil is not a man who deserves to be in hell.”

i'm not the only person who hears how "hymn to virgil" and "through me (the flood)" have exactly the same opening chords right
RIGHT
and HtV sounds almost like an echo or something, more muffled but still distinctly the same. i heard it the very first time i listened to the song! but i looked it up and didn't find anyone else saying it!
someone help me i'm not insane
