I know people have posted about this before but it honestly it striking how much the boys do not default to violence as a way of solving problems. They're detectives in the classic sense - they're looking for clues and unravelling mysteries, and most of the time they can handle things with subtlety instead of force. It's not off the table, but it's very much an option of last resort.
The first time we meet them they're dealing with a ghost that is actively trying to kill them, and they're not fighting, they're running. While trying to figure out what happened so that they can go back in with a better strategy. Even when the cursed ghost catches up with them, Charles hits it exactly once, to get enough breathing space that they can get back to the office and get the resources they need to break the curse. Their plan with Becky was to slip in and out while Esther was distracted - they only ended up in a fight because hauling Edwin and Becky out of the magical void took longer than expected.
And as much as Charles comments in Ep. 3 about puzzle solving being "Edwin's way" and hitting things with a cricket bat being his, that absolutely goes for him as well. In the flashbacks where he confronts his friends, he pulls them off and puts himself between them and the kid they're beating up - he doesn't continue the fight once the victim is safe. In the Devlin house he's visible shaken and upset from the first round of the cycle, but it's not until they've witnessed the murder several times and Edwin's plan to break the loop has failed and he's confronting the possibility that there may not be another option that he tries to fight Devlin directly. Most of what he does with his cricket bat is pull it out and plant himself between Edwin and whatever he's decided is a threat.
I suspect that's part of why Edwin was so rattled by the first encounter with the Night Nurse - not because it was wrong or unjustified, but because it's not normal for Charles to hit first.
And these are not normal circumstances! Charles has been pushed pretty hard at this point, and has just been assaulted in a way that Edwin probably isn't fully cognizant of, and was acting urgently to stop the Night Nurse from doing the same thing to Edwin. I think his reaction was absolutely justified, and possibly necessary. And I think Edwin's response, whether it was intended that way or not, did read as condemnation - at least to Charles who is already beating himself up for not being able to protect the people he loves and doubting whether he's a safe, trustworthy person.
But I also think it's notable that the next time he deals with the Night Nurse - after he's processed some of his feelings of anger and helplessness, after he's been reassured that he's still the best person Edwin knows - he takes a different tack. She's still imminently threatening to split them up and send Edwin to hell, which is probably Charles' worst nightmare. But this time he turns to negotiation, to appealing to her sense of justice, to looking for a loophole that could let them stay together. He's back to trying to solve problems by working through them.
And in fairness, the fact that she came back after being eaten by Angie is also a pretty strong indication that trying to fight her wouldn't have worked. But I do think it says something about Charles' attitude to the world that despite describing himself as "the brawn" and thinking of himself as the fighter between him and Edwin, his reflex is still to problem solve first, to use force defensively and only when necessary. That yes, he's angry and justly so, but unlike his father, or the boys who killed him, he doesn't choose to turn that into an excuse to hurt people. That his use of force is judicious and careful and is always, always about preventing harm.
#DeadBoyDetectives#Charles Rowland#Edwin Payne#Character analysis#Dead Boy Detectives#DBDA#I do think that first encounter with the Night Nurse#is one of those places where Edwin's baseline inability to phrase things tactfully really backfired#and that asking if Charles was alright or thanking him for the rescue would've been a more appropriate response#but I also think that he intended a lot less judgment than Charles read into it#Because the pileup of everything that Charles is dealing with right now has him *expecting* someone to start hitting him#fatal rambles

I could write essays on Charles' character. He's so tragic. That trope of 'you've become the very thing you wish to destroy' isn't in act here but it is his exact fear. He was brutally murdered by his friends, friends who we are shown beating up another kid as well, so assumably this isn't a rare thing for them, plus his abusive father. In life he was surrounded by violence.
And now in death he chooses to label himself 'the brawn' , Edwin relys on him to be the fighter as he can't even throw a punch, he's the only one of the main characters who has a signature weapon (his cricket bat) , when he gets angry or defensive or scared he gets violent. Because of course he does, look at his life.
He gets so scared of being like his father or even his literal killers that he puts on a positive mask all of the time (30+ years) to hide the anger and the sadness because he's a 'good guy' and he's only seen bad guys handle their emotions the way he does. He gets defensive over Brad and Hunter to the point of fault because he's desperately grasping for a man who isn't the worst. He's looking for hope that he isn't just like the others. He says "We've tried it your way, and it did nothing. Let's try mine." referring to his 'way' as fighting, which immediately seems weird considering Edwin and Crystal argue more than any other characters in the show but that's just the thing, they argue. They're quick with their words and sharp and harsh with them but they don't get aggressive and that's what Charles picks up on. Their anger doesn't become aggression but his does and he villainises himself for that.
Truth is, he could never be like his father or his friends turned bullies because he's their victim and he died their victim, (Night nurse: You never made it better and then you died) His aggression only occurs in defense of others, in the Devlin House he swings at the Dad whilst saying "Think you're big and tough with that axe? Big guy, killing a bunch of women?" he fights in defence of them. Then when he attacks the Night Nurse its in defence of Edwin being sent to hell, them being split up and also probably for how she tricked Crystal into having hope she'd found her family. (though spurred on by the Night Nurse forcing him to relive his traumatic memories too) It's always in defence of someone, to protect them. Which is the exact opposite of why his father and bullies were violent.
This is what's so good about dbda because obviously aggression is a flaw even with the best morals backing it up. Crystal calls him out on his anger issues, saying her and Edwin are on eggshells around him and later on Charles breaks down crying to Edwin who insists he is a good person because he cares about being one. Charles is allowed to have this journey that is most likely still ongoing, dealing with anger and grief and fear and masculinity and violence. We never doubt he's a good guy despite his flaws because he simply is, and all of the other characters know that as well.
#i have like so much more to say#every character in this show drives me crazy i love them sooooo much#some of the quotes might not be 100% accurate but close enough#charles rowland#the dead boy detectives#dead boy detective agency#dead boy detectives#dbda

Hurt Charles Rowland (Dead Boy Detectives) Rec list
Sooo, I've been obsessed with Dead Boy Detectives ever since it came out, and I especially love my boy Charles. I'm also a sucker for Hurt/Comfort, so of course I started searching for hurt Charles fic pretty soon. Here's a rec list of hurt!Charles fic that I've really loved.
Hurt!Charles (whump and angst)
Like Fool's Gold by RoseGanymede95
For half a second, Edwin’s vision was filled with a beautiful, ethereal sight. Charles had turned his face up in surprise, eyes wide and lips parted, and his brown eyes reflected the cloud of golden shimmers hovering above him. He was bathed in a gentle light, surrounded by a galaxy of tiny stars. Then the dust began to settle onto his skin, and Charles’ face contorted. He clapped his hands over his eyes, pressing hard, and drew in a harsh gasp through gritted teeth. “Charles?” Edwin shouted. Charles screamed.
10 more fic recs behind the read more.
Hold This by RoseGanymede95
“Alright, listen,” Charles said, after trying not to think at all for at least five minutes. “Hear me out.” “Any ideas?” Edwin asked, not looking up from his page. “It’s just. What would actually happen if you cut my hand off?” Edwin jerked his head up so fast, Charles wondered that he didn’t brain himself against the stone wall. He looked more offended than he had when he found out about the live snake in Charles’ bag. “What the hell kind of a question is that?” He hissed. “I’m not saying we should do it!” Charles backpedaled. “I’m just curious! These cuffs make us proper solid, don’t they? We could probably lop it off and get me out.” “No,” said Edwin emphatically. “We are not discussing this. I don’t want you getting any ideas and chewing your own arm off like a trapped weasel.” “Not my whole arm, just my hand.
Nothing Left to Hide by RoseGanymede95 for the_genderless_librarian
“You’re-” Charles has to stop before any more words can come through, because another round of sobbing overtakes him, forcefully enough Edwin thinks a living boy might break his ribs like this. “You’re. Scared.” Charles tries again, and the words sound like they’re being punched out of him, each one a broken, jagged thing, “Of. Spiders." Grief crashes down on Edwin like a physical weight. This is about Hell.
being unknown by The_IPRE
Edwin does know Charles, or at least he likes to think that he does. He knows that Charles is far better with the clients than he is, quick to offer a smile or extend sympathy while Edwin is far more interested in delving deeper into the details of the case. He knows that Charles has a wicked swing with his cricket bat, but prefers to leave that as a second resort when he believes there's a way for them to come to a compromise. He knows that Charles chooses to hope for the best from people, even after having seen the worst they have to offer–and in fact, having been killed by it. As Charles sits in front of him, the strain in his shoulders at odds with the easy grin on his face, Edwin wonders how much of his friend he is failing to see. -- 5 times Edwin didn't press the issue, and one time he did.
Try, Try Again by Asidian
Edwin lacks the aptitude for managing people; this he knows. He is clumsy at navigating stronger emotions, his own or those of others. But he has spent thirty long years side by side with Charles Rowland. He has spent them watching Charles console, and comfort, and offer support to those who need it. If his own fumbling attempt has fallen somewhat short, in this instance, he will have to ask himself what Charles would do, were their situations reversed.
The Case of the Memento Mori by Asidian
It takes Charles what seems an eternity to draw back enough to offer Edwin a wan sort a smile. His face is off-color, tight with the hurt. "Sorry, mate," he says. "Give me a tick. Don't know if I can get up just yet." A yawning pit of dread settles itself somewhere in the vicinity of Edwin's chest. He has thought of just this situation more times than he cares to count: Charles pressed against him, Charles' weight and warmth, Charles' arms around him. It feels a cruel twist of fate, all told, that this is how he finally gets it.
Heaven To No One Else But Me by coloursflyaway
We would like to offer you a gift, Edwin Payne, the entity says, and holds out its hand; Charles has to force himself to stay put and not step between it and Edwin, because it feels like danger, even if it shouldn’t. The entity wouldn’t hurt Edwin, he tells himself, and he knows it’s true, it’s just that it is so powerful that even the slightest touch is terrifying and Charles is terrified about losing Edwin all the time anyway. “Why me?”, Edwin asks, head raised high and the entity’s light reflecting off his skin in a way that makes it look like porcelain, fragile and translucent and beautiful, “Why not Charles?” There is nothing we could offer Charles Rowland to take his pain away, the entity says and its voice rings out in Charles’ head. But you, we could erase yours. If you wish us to.
Edwin gets the opportunity to go back in time and change his life so he will never have to go to Hell, but price of it is losing Charles; Charles can only stand next to him and wait for his decision. (Breaking Charles Rowland speed run.)
Cry With Joy At The Depth Of My Love by coloursflyaway
“Edwin?”, Crystal asks, and Edwin would say something snarky, maybe even something mean, but Charles is wrapped around him like he’ll never let go again, and there are more important matters at hand. “Crystal, what has happened here?”, he asks, and a few seconds later, their new psychic is standing in front of him, trousers splashed with the coffee she dropped, disbelief written across her face. “I was gone for a few hours and now Charles… and the whole building…” He’s not quite sure how to put it, most likely because he still doesn’t understand, and Crystal looks at him like he come back from the Cat King’s lair with an additional head. “Edwin”, she says, slowly, like she is still searching for the words, “what are you talking about? You’ve been gone for six weeks.” ____________ Edwin takes the Cat King up on his initial offer, so instead of a few hours, he is gone for six weeks. Charles isn't good at coping with it.
Reach Out And Touch Faith by coloursflyaway
And Charles doesn’t notice that Edwin doesn't touch him anymore, maybe for no other reason than that he doesn’t want to, because doing so hurts, but then there’s a night when Edwin walks past him and he raises his hand like he wants to brush it against Charles’ arm – his metaphorical heartbeat picks up at that, like Charles has been waiting for this even more than he realised – but then, a second before his hand connects, Edwin pulls it back like he’s been burnt. And that, well. That hurts too.
Edwin stops touching Charles; Charles doesn't deal well with it.
If I could hold you for a minute by HistoriaGloria
"For as vicious as it can be for ghosts, iron is not as common as you would think. It is rare, in Edwin’s experience, that the supernatural forces they are dealing with actually know that iron hurts as much as it does. Rare, but not rare enough." Charles is hurt on a case, leaving Edwin and Crystal to pick up the pieces.
Hold Me As The World Sets Ablaze by UneducatedAuthor
Charles thinks, dazedly, through the fog of it all, that the end of it must be a lot like the beginning of it. With Edwin, holding close to him, whispering words that don't quite reach, because he's the best person Charles knows, and he wants to comfort him. So he begs Edwin not to go as the world once again, turns black. Edwin, of course, stays. (Charles is familiar with omphalotis nidiformis. He's not familiar with having someone stay with him through the pain of it.)

Part 9
TW: Blood, gore, violence, fatal.
The night air is crisp and full of the sounds of night. Insects chirped or squealed, night birds did their gentle songs, bats chittered overhead. His steps were light, silent, barely disturbing the sleeping deer in the brush as he wandered past, the dull creatures lifting their heads and swiveling their ears, just to lay down and go back to sleep.
it was peaceful and calm, as it should be.
Whatever had chased the person in his den back to these woods was nowhere to be heard or smelled, and neither was any other monstrous intruders. Good.
It wasn’t until he came to where the vehicle had crashed, that he picked up the scent of intruders. Someone had been here recently, several someones, humans by the smell of it, with guns. Other survivors perhaps? Hunters?
He snarled at the thought of hunters lurking in his woods.Whoever they were, they wouldn’t be here long - he’d make sure of that.
He follows their scent to a small camp. A fire pit sits at the center, cold and buried. Whoever had been here, had done their best to hide their presence. Were they still here, however? He circles the clearing from the shadows carefully, his ears tuned into every sound. He takes a slow, deep breath, scenting the air, it smells of dead leaves, of burnt wood, deer, crushed herbs, sweat....and gun powder. Whoever these people were, they had taken great care to try and hide their smell, but no human could hide themselves for long, not from a monster like himself, not with their polluted stench. He takes note of the quiet spots around him, little pockets of void; a tree devoid of crickets or birds, a bush no frog would call towards, another no wild life would go near. he notes them all and locks them in his minds eye. There’s three of them, three hunters hidden around this site, waiting, watching. Perhaps they’re sleeping and only one is on watch, but then, that’d beg the question of why they were out here to begin with. It certainly wasn’t just to camp.
He circles the camp one last time, them sets his sites upon the tree in front of him, the quiet one, where no birds will perch. It takes him a moment to see her. She's set up on a thick branch, gun in her lap as she stares out into the darkness. Does she assume anything out here will simply go straight for the stench of the fire? Or does she foolishly assume she will see the danger before it sees her?
She is wrong either way.
He stares at her from the shadows. She sits conveniently level with his face - an ideal position if he was as stupid as she assumed he was. He reaches up slowly at first, hand hidden in the shadows, then clamps his hand over her swiftly. He sneers, self-satisfied as her neck crunches in his palm and blood soaks into his claws. Her body goes limp and the gun drops into his palm. He places it silently back in the branches.
One down.
He hunkers down in the shadows, waiting a moment to see if any of the other rats would react. Had they heard? Would they notice? If they did, they don’t show it. A pity. Seems he’d have to rile them up - a thought he wasn’t too displeased with, if he was honest. He chooses the one in the shrubs next, making it a point to crush a log on his way around. Allow them to think this was playing out as it should…
The man in the shrubs lays flat on his stomach, gun pointed towards the tree the woman had just been in. Foolish. As if any self-respecting monster would just show themselves like that. But that’s how humans saw monsters, as simple-minded beasts. It would be their downfall. The man tenses, his sense of being watched making him paranoid and restless. He flips around as the giant brings up his foot. A shout escapes the man, a curse as he fires off a spray of bullets and attempts to roll away. Many of the bullets rush past the giant in a loud burst of leaves, thwacking through the canopy like a panicked rush of birds. A few lucky bullets sink into the giants leg as he back peddles away. He snarls at the pain, but chooses to redirect that pain into rage - rage he takes out on the hunter. The man is barely on his feet when the giants foot slams into him, sending him flying across the clearing and into a tree with the loud crack of broken bone. The man slumps to the ground, groaning as blood flowed freely down his face. The giant growls through grit teeth as he settles his weight on his injured leg. Warmth run downs his leg, soaking his pants in crimson. It hurt like hell, but it’d hardly keep him down. He’d felt much worse before.
By now, the last had realized everything had gone terribly wrong. The snik of a flare filled the now dead silent night, and the giant had to shield his eyes as the light arched towards him, temporarily blinding him. Luckily, the hunter couldn’t see past the glare, either. She yells uselessly up at her ally to cover her as she ran to the downed man, unknowing of how alone she was in this moment.
he steps over the flare and into the clearing, the little light doing wonders to illuminate the scene before them both. The final rat stares at him in disdain, rifle pointed towards his head. She shouts again for her partner in the tree to take the shot. He can’t help but chuckle. “She can’t help you right now.” he sneers, tilting his head towards the hand he held the sniper in. The hunters eyes follow the motion and her eyes widen a fraction. He hears her heart skip a beat, one wonderous skip of fear that fills his own with joy. Her finger graces the trigger and as the crack of gunfire explodes around them, he chucks the corpse at her. Blood and brains splatter the woman as her comrades head explodes from the blocked shot. The hunter falters, blood stinging her eyes. She tries to swipe it away with her forearm while keeping the gun steadily aimed, but her vision is blurry and her stomach is sick. The gun shakes in her hand. She blinks - hard - to try and clear her vision, and in that moment, he’s atop her. His hand knocks the gun astray, another shot wasted into the night as he yanks it up and off balances her. She stumbles back and reaches into her pocket. He doesn’t give her time to pull whatever it is out. Razorsharp claws slice across her, shredding the arm and leaving large gashes across her chest and one across the face. He tisks as if admonishing a child.”none of that now.” he rumbles as he plucks her from the ground. The hunter grunts through gritted teeth, even through the pain she manages to glare up at the giant through watery eyes. “Fuck you” she spits. “Oho~ Still got some fire in ya, huh? I like that” he purrs. She opens her mouth to speak again, and is cut off as his tongue rasps across her face, slow and deliberate. “mmmm. You know, I really think you two go great together.” he hums gently, alluding to the gore splattered across her. “Fucking pig.” she spits again, this time actually spitting at the giant. “Just get it over with.” “Awww” he feigns disappointment, “But where’s the fun in that?” “Fun?” she huffs between pained breaths.”That’s what it always is with you beasts, isn’t it....Our deaths turned into some sort of game for your pleasure.” “What other purpose would you serve?” he chuckles. “Besides to fill our bellies of course.” he reminds matter of factly. “This is why the Legion exists.” she snarls, attempting to force her injured arm to work, to force her hand into her pocket. “If you think you monsters have a chance in hell of winning this war, you’re wrong.” “The Legion is everywhere. “ a manic laughter begins to shake her. “Everywhere. Even as we speak, even when I breathe my last, the Legion grows. All you monsters have managed to do is bring more to our cause.” She continues to speak, something that might have been heroic, if there was any one else to hear it - but for him, it was simply boring. yadda yadda yadda. Legion this. Extermination of monsters that. He’d heard it all before. He rolls his eyes and shoves the manic womans upper body into his mouth. She only gets louder, shouting about his inevitable death upon the tables of some collector or other. He holds her there with his teeth, applying just enough pressure to make her wheeze and nothing more. He can feel saliva pooling into his mouth, and drool dribbling down his chin to soak into the hunters clothes. With his occupied hand, he uses the back of his knuckles to keep her lifted while his free hand expertly slashes the pockets of her pants. Something small and glittery falls from the cloth and onto the ground. Ice. He swallows around his prey, a mouthful of blood and saliva dragged down his throat as she continued to squirm and squeak out insults. Oh this was divine. He uses his free hand to grab her thrashing legs properly now and lifted her up as he tiled his head back. He opens his mouth to accommodate more of her body. “The legion will pick you clean,” she manages to choke out before she’s swallowed down into his hungry gut. He lets out a satisfied sigh as she sinks into her new tomb. He looks down at the corpse in his hand. It was in a disgusting state, the head blown open and leaking, the flesh cold and still...It was disappointing, but he hadn’t been raised a wasteful child, and even if the world had fallen into chaos, he didn’t see the point in starting now. He tears into it, savoring the crunch of bone and the soft squish of organs upon his pallet until nothing remains but a pair of shoes. Now, only one hunter remained. He hoped it wasn’t dead. He knelt next to the man and flicked the side of his face gently with a finger larger than the mans torso. he groaned, but didn’t wake. At least he was alive. Prey was always better alive. not only that, but this allowed for the perfect opportunity to see how his simple guest would react to all this. He lifts the man from the ground like a small sack of potatoes and begins to lug him along on his shoulder. “Come on the. I got someone you should meet.” he chuckles. Though, inwardly, he can’t help the flutter of worry in his chest. How would they react? Poorly probably....Perhaps this was a stupid idea. No. It needed to be tested, to see if they could be trusted, and this helpless sack of meat would be the perfect bait for it all; too broken to hurt him no matter what, but alive enough to encourage the other to react in some way or other. Would they try to free the man and get out with him? Would they try to kill him? Would they do nothing at all? Would it matter? Would any result he got matter to him really? He’d probably end up eating them out of sheer convenience anyway... He didn’t know, and he didn’t want to think on it further, so without another word, he trudged back to his cave.

@underordinarymoonlight wanted:
Dark academia inspired (or just set) Northanger Abbey drabble….? or just anything Henry Tilney, one of the best fictional men
Not sure I can match dark academia, but here's a scene that I've really wanted to write for ages from my as-yet-unwritten pan-Austen university AU.
*
At the campus gates with a good view down the hill, was a desk where the official welcomers were waiting to greet the new freshers and show them to their halls of residence. Hurrying towards this desk was a student with a shock of brown hair. He approached another student, also with a shock of brown hair but wearing a high vis jacket over his t-shirt.
"Hey, Ed! I didn't know you were helping out today," the high vis wearing student hailed him before immediately looking Ed up and down. "What on earth are you wearing?"
Ed leaned his hands on his legs as he got his breath. "I was sorting out the chapel warden rota forms."
"And you needed to wear a suit to do that? God, I am really letting the side down here!"
Ed looked up and then his face creased in puzzlement. "Henry, never mind me, what is that?"
Henry chuckled and pulled back his jacket to reveal a "Canon Jesus is better than Fanon Jesus" t-shirt. "Oh, you like?"
Ed opened his mouth and then thought better of it. "I'm not staying to help out. I was looking for a girl."
Henry raised his eyebrows. "Finally! I thought it would never happen! Guys, wonders never cease - our Edmund is becoming a man!"
"Oh, shut up!" replied Ed, turning pink around the ears. "She's an old friend from home starting here today and I promised I'd look out for her. She's very shy. Where's your signing in form?"
"Caro and Louisa have it over there. Hey, is that her maybe?" Henry added as Ed headed over towards another desk. He was looking at a girl who was valiantly marching up the hill, a large camping rucksack on her back, dragging a suitcase in one hand and carrying a large cricket bat over the other shoulder, a tennis racket slung across her chest.
Henry ran forward to meet her. "Hey, you need any help with that?"
"Thanks!" she replied with a grin. Her cheeks were pink from exertion and tendrils of messy dark hair that had once been in a pony tail were sticking to her face and neck. She handed Henry the suitcase and the cricket bat and paused to roll her shoulders before they continued up to the desks.
"Bloody hell, what do you have in this? A stash of stolen gold ingots? Should I be reporting you to the police?"
The girl laughed breathlessly. "It is heavy, isn't it? But I'm doing English and I just couldn't leave these books behind. How could I possibly choose between my favourite editions of Tolkein and Pullman?"
"Very valid, I approve, even if we do actually have libraries here, you know, being a university. But I have to ask, why didn't you take a taxi from the station or wait for one of the shuttle buses?"
She shrugged, a little embarrassed. "I might have underestimated what they meant by 'hill'. It doesn't look far on the map. But it's fine! I always walk everywhere."
They had reached the desks where Ed was pouring over the sign in sheet. "I missed her," he exclaimed dolefully to Henry. "She's already signed in. I can't believe it! I had one job."
Henry clapped him sympathetically on the back. "Cheer up, old chap. She's here for the rest of the year now. But you're hogging the sign-in sheet. Let's find out where..." He looked expectantly at the girl, who had temporarily dropped her rucksack to the ground.
"Catherine. Catherine Morland."
Ed ran his finger down the list. "There you are! Oh! You're in 12 Mansfield. You're going to be flatmates with my friend, Fran. She's so lovely. I'll come with you and show you the way."
"Brilliant, thanks so much." She was starting to heft the rucksack back on when she suddenly noticed Henry's t-shirt. Her eyes went round.
"Wait, is that what I think it is?"
Henry pushed back the high vis vest so Catherine could take a good look, which she did with unconcealed delight.
"Oh my God, oh my God, this is so brilliant! This is the most hilarious thing I've ever seen!"
Henry shot Ed a very smug look.
"Ahh, would you mind if - that is, may I take a photo for my dad?"
"You want to take a photo of me for your dad? Unusual, but I'll grant it."
"No, no, you don't understand. My dad's a vicar and he would just love this so much. It's right up his street." She fished out her phone.
Henry removed the high vis jacket and struck a pose. "Would you like me like this?" He moved to another pose. "Or would you prefer this?"
She waved him away. "No, just stand still. I don't want your head anyway."
"Ah, like a statue. Got it. Chest only. No face." He was somehow managing to keep a straight face but his eyes were dancing.
Catherine took the shot and smiled down at her phone. "Thank you, really. It will relieve my dad so much to know that there are good people here."
"You're welcome," said Henry, more gently, understanding the motivation behind the odd request. "But it occurs to me that my sister hasn't seen this t-shirt either. Could you send me the photo so I can send it to her?"
Catherine's eyes went wide. "Of course, what a good idea! What's your number?"
Henry solemnly dictated it to her and in a moment he received a WhatsApp message with a picture of his own headless torso from an unknown number.
"Thank you, Catherine," he replied solemnly. "That's very kind of you."
"You're so welcome. I hope your sister likes it." She hoisted the rucksack back onto her shoulders, allowed Ed to take the suitcase and picked the cricket back again and lead the way to 12 Mansfield. She turned around and gave Henry a cheerful wave before following Ed with a bouncy step, unaffected by her strenuous climb.
Henry waved back and then saved her number in his phone. He forwarded the picture with the comment "Can you believe I got a girl's number with this t shirt?"
A few minutes the reply came back: "More plausible than your looks or personality. 😘"
Henry grinned at his phone and put it away in time to welcome the next fresher.

The Different Types of Cricket Balls
There is a widespread belief that the type of ball used has a significant effect on the game. This seems to make no sense in terms of physics.
The ball starts life as a large sheet of leather, dyed either red or white. It is then cut into four pieces and stitched together covering a string-spun chunk of cork.
Durability
The cricket ball is a crucial component of the game, providing batsmen and bowlers with unique challenges. From the distinct swing and seam movement of a red leather Heavy cricket balls in Test matches to the visibility and behaviour of white and pink cricket balls in limited-overs and day-night tests, understanding the differences between the different types of cricket balls helps players adapt their skills and tactics accordingly.
Durability is essential for a cricket ball, as it needs to be able to withstand highspeed play. It also requires good stitching, as it must be able to withstand wear and tear without compromising its structural integrity.
The TENNEX cricket tennis balls are designed for durability, ensuring they can stand up to the rigours of the game. The heavy design provides a more challenging training experience for players, helping them develop their strength and improve their batting and bowling skills. These balls are also ideal for casual play and practice sessions, as they can withstand a variety of weather conditions.
Weight
The weight of the cricket ball is important because it affects the amount of momentum imparted on the bat. Batsmen often choose a bat that feels light or heavy to them, depending on their strength. This is because a bat with the right amount of weight will allow them to maximize their swing speed.
The spherical cricket ball is made from leather that has been dyed the iconic red or modern white. It has a cork core, which is layered with tightly wound string and covered by a leather case with a slightly raised seam. The top-quality balls used for the highest level of competition have a covering constructed from four pieces of leather shaped like the peel of a quartered orange, with one hemisphere rotated by 90 degrees to the other and stitched together using six rows of stitches.
Bowling faster is a goal of many cricketers. Petersen and colleagues found that a 10week program of training with underweight and overweight cricket balls did not increase the bowling speed of male club-level cricket players.
Bounce
The bounce of a cricket ball is an essential factor in its performance, as it influences the bowler’s ability to swing and grip the pitch. A new ball has a higher bounce than an older one, and this is due to the difference in its materials and manufacturing. It is also influenced by the surface conditions and weather.
In general, bowlers described as having a heavy ball are not actually very fast, but they are able to impact the bat with greater force than is suggested by their pace. This is because they are able to generate a lot of backspin.
When choosing a cricket ball, it is important to consider its weight, material quality and seam strength. It is also vital to ensure that it is durable and that its seam position and stitching are properly placed, especially for spin bowlers. The textured surface is also important, and brands such as Kookaburra and SG are known for their excellent grip.
Feel
In a cricket ball, a cork sphere is layered with tightly wound string and covered by two leather halves. Each half is stitched with an inner seam and a raised outer seam. The seams create a distinctive feel when struck by a bat. The higher the seam, the more the ball will vibrate when hit. Usually, a high quality ball for international level cricket will have three seams and six rows of stitches. Lower-quality balls may have two seams.
Often the best way to find out how heavy a cricket ball is is by playing with one. Ideally, you will use a regulation cricket bat rather than a tape ball. This will ensure that the bat is safe if it is hit by the ball.
Commentators often describe a bowler as having a “heavy ball”. What does this mean in physics terms? A heavy ball simply means that a delivery seems to impact the bat with more force than is expected from its pace.

Choosing the Right Thigh Guard for Maximum Protection
Cricket is a fast-paced sport filled with unpredictable moments, and injuries can occur from fastballs or accidental hits from a bat. Be sure to wear protective gear — including a thigh guard to shield your thigh from impacts that might happen while hitting or fielding.
Wearing appropriate thigh guards is as important as donning a well-fitted and reliable chest guard. Without one, you’re more likely to suffer from contusions, severe bruises, or fractures if you get hit in the thigh, and these injuries can seriously impair you from playing again. The cushioning will absorb the force from impacts and reduce the chances of injuries, so you can enjoy a fun and worry-free game.
But how do you pick a cricket thigh guard? Read on for tips.
Know the different types available.
When choosing cricket thigh guards, you’ll encounter both traditional and modern designs. Traditional thigh guards are typically made of hard plastic or foam and come in two pieces. They’re designed to be attached inside batting pads for basic protection against accidental bat hits and fastballs. However, they may not be as flexible or comfortable as modern thigh guards, which are lightweight and more flexible. Their all-in-one design features adjustable straps for a snug fit, and they can be worn on either thigh. Manufacturers often use premium materials like molded plastic and foam (or a combination of both) for optimal comfort and protection.
Should you get a combo or one thigh guard?
The answer depends on your position and whether you’re left-handed or right-handed. An inner-thigh cricket thigh guard offers inner-thigh protection for batsmen. Outer thigh guard pads are ergonomically designed for both left- and right-handed players and feature adjustable straps for a personalized fit. Combo thigh guards, or all-in-one guards, offer protection for both the outer and inner thighs, making them ideal for comprehensive protection against hard blows.
Check the brand
Always go for thigh guards from reputable and established names for quality and value for money. MRF and New Balance are among the top brands offering lightweight and high-quality cricket thigh guards.
Shop at a reliable cricket store.
All About Cricket Store will eliminate the guesswork from buying a high-quality cricket thigh guard at a reasonable price. The price match guarantee lets you get protective gear at the best value. Plus, the store has reliable guides and reviews to aid your buying decision.

How to Choose the Right Cricket Bat for Your Playing Style: A Comprehensive Guide
The proper choice of cricket bat enhances your game. Whether you are a power hitter, a classic stroke player or an all-rounder, who mostly plays a mix of shots, the right bat should go along with your playing style. In this guide, we are going to guide you on key considerations for choosing your cricket bat, as per different playing styles and preferences. This guide is exclusively for customers of Cricstudio Inc. where you will have extensive versions of English Willow, Kashmir Willow, Tennis, Middler, and branded bats.
1. Understanding Your Playing Style
For starters, knowing the batting style that you are going to adopt is better than not choosing a bat right. Therefore get to know the kind of batting style you are going to adopt:
Power Hitter: Do you love smashing boundaries? Power hitters require a bat with a heavy profile and thick edges that can give them ample power.
If you play on timing and placement, you would want a light bat that affords fast hand movement and precise control. If you are an all-rounder, so to say, who plays a more balanced game where power and control need to be mixed, then you should go for a bat that aids such a game.
2. Forms of Willow
The type of willow used in the bat determines its performance, durability, and feel.
English Willow: For professional cricketers, the best quality bats could be English willow and they are ideal for experienced players. These bats carry with them tremendous power, lightweight, and durability. If you're aggressive or technical, this one will get you started: find a perfect range of English willow bats from Cricstudio Inc.
Kashmir Willow: Kashmir willow is not as costlier as the English willow. It is the best one for beginners and casual players. It offers good serviceability and is rather inexpensive.
Tennis Bat: Dedicated to the particular needs of tennis ball cricket, these ones are lighter in weight and stronger to ensure that they are fit for recreation only.
Middler Bat: A very versatile bat providing control along with power, it can be the perfect option for those who play all kinds of shots.
3. Weight and Pickup
The weight of the bat matters as it decides how you would handle it in the field.
Lightweight Bats: Suitable for those whose strengths lie in speed and precision. Those bats are easy to swing and handle.
Heavyweight Bats: Suitable for power hitters who want to generate more force for each shot. However, they are difficult to handle for a long period.
When choosing a bat, always consider the "pickup" or how heavy the bat feels when you hold it. Even a heavier bat can feel lighter if it has good balance.
4. Bat Size and Shape
Bat size is important for comfort and performance. There are different bat sizes ranging from children's to adult sizes.
Handle Size: More control will be achieved if the handles are shorter, but players who take bigger shots use more handles.
Blade Shape: The shape of the bat's blade differs as some bats have a high sweet spot and are suitable for players who play on bouncier pitches. Others with lower sweet spots are perfect for those who'd rather force the ball onto a flat place along the ground.
5. Brand and Quality
At Cricstudio Inc., we offer you a range of branded bats from quality manufacturers known for their high-quality performance. Choose only a bat from a good brand as this would ensure that you'd be getting a product that has been tried and tested to function efficaciously.
6. Bat Testing
Test the bat whenever you get an opportunity. Swing it around and check the pickup of the bat and how it feels with your hands when you handle it. If you are ordering online at Cricstudio Inc., we give detailed descriptions and what our customers have to say about it, thus helping you make the correct choice.
7. Maintenance and Care
Maintenance and care of your preferred cricket bat will be the key to its life once it reaches your hand after purchase.
Oiling and Knocking-In: Oiling and knocking-in should be done on the English willow bats before use for the bat to last longer.
Storage: Store your bat in a cool, dry place away from moisture or direct sunlight which may distort it.
Choosing the best cricket bat would make it quite easier to achieve better performance on the field. At CricstudioInc., we manufacture bats for every playing style and your personal preferences. Whether you're a beginner or a professional, our collection of English Willow, Kashmir Willow, Tennis, Middler, and branded bats does fit one's pocket. So, come and have it with the perfect bat for you from Cricstudio Inc today!

The Essential Guide to Choosing the Right Batting Gloves for Every Cricketer
Batting gloves are an indispensable part of any cricketer's kit. They offer much more than just protection; they are crucial for enhancing grip, comfort, and overall performance on the field. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, selecting the right pair of batting gloves can make a significant difference in your game. In this blog, we'll explore the importance of batting gloves, the different types available, and how to choose the best pair for your needs.
1. Why Batting Gloves Matter
Batting gloves are essential for several reasons. Firstly, they provide a secure grip on the bat, which is crucial for executing powerful and controlled shots. Without gloves, sweat and moisture can cause your hands to slip, leading to mistimed shots or even losing grip on the bat during a swing. Gloves also offer cushioning that protects your hands from the constant impact of the ball, reducing the risk of blisters and injuries. This protection is particularly important during long innings or intense matches where the hands are repeatedly exposed to impact.
2. Types of Batting Gloves
There are various types of batting gloves designed to meet different needs and preferences:
Traditional Leather Gloves: These gloves offer excellent durability and a natural feel. They provide a strong grip and are often preferred by professional cricketers. However, they may require a break-in period to achieve maximum comfort.
Modern Synthetic Gloves: Made from synthetic materials, these gloves are lightweight and often feature added ventilation for breathability. They are easier to maintain and generally more affordable than leather gloves, making them popular among amateur players.
Hybrid Gloves: Combining the best of both worlds, hybrid gloves feature leather palms for grip and synthetic materials for flexibility and comfort. These are a great option for players who want the benefits of both leather and synthetic gloves.
3. Key Features to Look For
When choosing batting gloves, consider the following features to ensure you get the best pair for your needs:
Grip: The primary function of batting gloves is to provide a secure grip on the bat. Look for gloves with textured or padded palms to enhance your grip, even in sweaty conditions.
Padding: Adequate padding is crucial for protecting your hands from impact. High-quality gloves will offer multi-layered padding to absorb shocks and prevent injuries.
Fit and Comfort: A snug fit is essential for maintaining control, but the gloves should not be too tight. Ensure there is enough room for your fingers to move freely without causing discomfort.
Ventilation: Breathable materials and ventilation holes are important to keep your hands cool and dry, especially during long matches.
Durability: Investing in a durable pair of gloves will save you money in the long run. Check for reinforced stitching and high-quality materials that can withstand the rigors of regular use.
4. How to Choose the Right Pair
Choosing the right pair of batting gloves depends on your playing style, level of experience, and personal preferences. Beginners might opt for synthetic or hybrid gloves that are easier to break in and maintain, while experienced players may prefer the feel and durability of leather gloves. It’s also important to try on different pairs to find the right fit—gloves that are too tight or too loose can negatively impact your performance.
Conclusion
Batting gloves are more than just a piece of protective gear; they are essential for maximizing your performance on the field. By providing superior grip, comfort, and protection, the right pair of gloves can help you play with confidence and skill. Whether you’re facing fast bowlers or playing long innings, investing in quality batting gloves tailored to your needs will ensure you perform at your best. So, take the time to choose the right pair, and you’ll see the difference in your game.

Finding the best asset allocation with Equity all rounder.
Imagine you're building your dream team for a critical cricket match. You wouldn't just pick all batsmen, would you? You'd need a balanced combination: explosive openers, a dependable middle-order, a wily spin bowler, and a sharp pacer. Similarly, when it comes to investing, creating a winning portfolio requires the right mix of assets – that's where asset allocation comes in. Today we will discuss how Equity all rounder strategy can help you find the right asset allocation.
Why is Asset Allocation Important?
Asset allocation is how much you put across investments. It’s like a recipe where each ingredient contributes to the final dish. Too much of one thing, and it can spoil the taste; too little, and the flavor isn’t quite there. In the financial world, this mix helps you manage risk while still aiming for returns. For example, if you put all your money in stocks, you could enjoy great gains when the market is booming but might also face significant losses during downturns. On the other hand, bonds and fixed deposits offer more stability but may not deliver high returns over time. The key is to find a balance that aligns with your risk tolerance, financial goals, and investment horizon.
The Traditional Approach: The 60/40 Rule
Historically, the 60/40 rule has been a popular guideline for many investors. This rule suggests allocating 60% of your portfolio to stocks and 40% to bonds. The idea behind this mix is simple: stocks provide growth potential, while bonds offer stability and income. However, while this approach has worked well in the past, it may not always suit every investor, especially in today's dynamic financial landscape. Market conditions, inflation rates, and individual financial goals have evolved, making a one-size-fits-all strategy less effective.
A More Dynamic Strategy: Multi-Asset Allocation
To address the limitations of the traditional approach, investors have begun to explore multi-asset allocation strategies. This involves diversifying beyond just stocks and bonds to include other assets like gold, international investments, etc. This strategy offers several benefits. For one, it allows for better risk management by spreading investments across different asset classes that may not move in tandem. For instance, when the stock market is volatile, gold prices often rise, providing a cushion against losses. Moreover, this approach provides exposure to various growth opportunities globally, not just within your home country.
Personalizing Asset Allocation: Your Unique Financial Journey
The best asset allocation isn't just about following a formula; it's about understanding your own financial journey. Are you just starting your career, with decades to invest and recover from potential losses? In that case, a portfolio with a heavier weight in equities might be suitable. On the other hand, if you're approaching retirement, preserving your capital may become more important, and you might want to consider more bonds or fixed-income instruments. Factors like your financial goals, risk appetite, and investment horizon play crucial roles in determining the best allocation for you.
What is The Perfect Mix for Every Investor?
Now, you might wonder how you can find the perfect mix for your unique needs. Here’s where an "All rounder" approach comes into play. Imagine this as a well-rounded cricketer who can bat, bowl, and field – a versatile player who adds value regardless of the game’s situation. An all rounder portfolio is designed to offer a balanced mix of different asset classes, allowing you to optimize returns while managing risk. It’s flexible, adjusts with market conditions, and provides an automatic rebalancing mechanism to maintain the desired allocation over time.
Why All Rounder is the Best Asset Allocation
Choosing the best asset allocation is less about finding the perfect number and more about building a strategy that aligns with your personal goals and risk tolerance. In today’s ever-changing market environment, a dynamic, multi-asset strategy like the all rounder offers a robust way to navigate both the ups and downs. It’s designed to help you capture growth opportunities, protect against downturns, and ensure your financial ship remains on course. So, as you consider your next investment move, think about whether a multi asset portfolio could be your ideal path to achieving financial success. This approach not only optimizes your returns but also provides peace of mind—knowing that your investments are strategically allocated to weather any financial storm.
