nothing he does has ever been good enough for anyone and it’s a chip on his shoulder, a burden he makes everyone else around him carry, and when he was 17, he really went off the deep end, stealing his dad’s boat and crashing it and later spilling secrets and opinions on his father’s politics (spoiler alert: they weren’t good ones) to someone he didn’t realize was a reporter until he was reading his own quotes in a story the very next day. raymond sr. shipped him off to a boarding school in new york, and that’s sort of where nate began to actually live his life for himself.
with distance, he started to think maybe this wasn’t so bad, he could do his own thing and be his own person and find happiness by stepping outside of the giant shadow his father casts. then it all came crashing down the day his dad called to invite him back home, nate jumping at the opportunity to prove himself. he stepped right into the role of the president of the blackwood foundation— his own brainchild he was surprised his father got behind.
it became clear several years later when his dad’s machinations behind the scenes showed nate that he’d been using the foundation as a cover to absorb businesses in which he took special interest. nate told his father he didn’t want to work for him any longer and raymond sr actually seemed to take it well. he wished nate well and had an NDA handy (standard practice in business, especially one as big and influential as blackwood industries) and nate signed it without question
not three days later, an article came out by @delilahdangelo, with detailed records citing bribery and collusion under the blackwood foundation’s umbrella, all with nate’s name attached. every single deal his father had ever made had been manipulated to look like it had been nate all along. professionally, he was ruined
in the midst of a self-pity spiral, nate was involved in a small fender bender with @kayla-beckett and eventually, that blossomed into love. for six years, they were together and slowly over that time, nate found himself again, stepped outside of that shadow and began to carve out a real life for himself. with his knack for spotting needs in the community and his mind for business, he managed to set up several projects that worked to provide resources for people that needed them. none of which publicly had his name attached, and that was the way he liked it
