bc i cant resist talking about this. The jokes about the weirdness of Mia's hair/it's unnatural movement are VERY funny and her hair is SUPER wack, well deserved lmfao.
BUT for anyone interested, it has historically been quite difficult to accurately animate hair and fur in 3D, esp in things like games where the movement and interactions are not predictable- aka, its not just simulating it once and recording it, but trying to figure out how to make it organically, naturally move based on unpredictable input. (like someone controlling a character in a game) This is because there are an immense amount of small physics interactions and events happening simultaneously that comprise the way we percieve hair (or fur) to move. This then changes further depending on the texture of the strands, whether they are wet or dry, etc. The typical physics tactic of coding in known behaviour based on certain interactions between objects breaks down a bit with such a large volume of items.
Computing the actual individual interactions between individual hairs using a physics based model, would get you closer to actual movement but quickly becomes very expensive, as you can imagine, (constantly computing physics interactions for thousands of individual hairs).
There have been a number of ways to deal with this issue over time, cheat it a bit/make the performance feasible. You'll notice in older games hair or fur is typically either a flat surface with some coloring/lighting on it to make it seem like a certain texture (more common for fur), or just a. flat line or block without an actual attempt to make the actual movements of esch individual hair. Animation of animal fur is often done in patches instead of treating it as individual hairs or all just a plane, which is why furry animals in video games might look a little like their fur is matted vs all flowing smoothly and softly. Brave did some interesting tech to correctly depict curly hair in a way that feels "right".
anyway. its a fun topic. i find it interesting. cant find a general history video about it like the lecture i attended about it, but there are tons of interesting papers on it as the resesrch and work around this is still ongoing.
#attended a fascinating lecture on this and think about it consistently whenever i see hair or fur in video games. ESPECIALLY when its good#spent the first hour or so in horizon forbidden west going 'oh WOW the hair is so realistic' bc of this#this and wave/water animations.... tech is cool#resident evil 7#re7#smosh#amanda lehan canto#angela giarratana#amangela#whoops..didnt mean to get caught up writing this during work break... oh well

«Infodumping»
«Crosshair would be lying if he said that there was nothing warm and familiar in that burning light of enthusiasm behind his brother's eyes. Now, over time, such sparks of life flared up more and more often, especially during last rotations, but, of course, not as much as it used to happen before - in all their conventional "before". There was about as much sentimentality in him as there was stability in this whole anomaly - critically little... At least from the outside. But even he, a moron with the emotional range of a toothpick, wanted to dive into the deepest flooded facility, climb the highest mountain and get burned on fire as many times as necessary, if only this light would not die out. If only this light in the eyes remained to shine longer.»
[ RP Horizon!AU, ep.1 – «It takes two» ]
Just a quick sketch on our current episode in play. They're getting ready for their long trip, and, well... Maybe these two are in their chaotic arc.

Thinking about the original Miriam robots that existed before the Zero Dawn ones and what they might look like.
GAIA uses mostly vertebrate animals as inspiration for her robots, which makes sense, since they need to traverse rough terrain from ruined human infrastructure and wilderness… having hooves and legs instead of treads would probably help with that.
And we know the Chariot Line has an arthropod/cephalopod kind of theme… scorpions, cuttlefish/squids and… crabs? Are the Khopesh units crabs?
Anyway, I feel like that leaves three kind of unique tacks for Elisabet’s original designs…
1) Plantlike bots
2) Insectiod bots
3) Mythical creature based bots
They’re all kinda cool possibilities… but I kinda like Option 2 myself.
Forester drones that look like giant digger wasps, buzzing up to the tops of trees to check health and then digging holes and depositing new seeds via their “stinger.”
Winnow drones that are like the big toe-biter bugs, mandibles spread wide to catch microplastics and filter them from the water.
Lantern drones that look like dragonflies, collecting radiation in swoops and then pausing to brush their forearms over their faces, igniting internal reactions that neutralize the danger.
Open source schematics for a giant rhinoceros beetle field-prowler whose specialized “horn” leaves the roots of native plants alone while making a row for a farmer riding on its “shell” to plant in.
Just… ROBOT BUGS HELPING THE PLANET.

been playing bits and pieces of horizon forbidden west! game's pretty as hell
#horizon forbidden west#photo mode#my edits#yannow. it got me thinking too. the npc fidelity in this game is off the fucking shits. never seen anything like it#even secondary dialogues are leaving all the competition in the dust. it's an insane level of work#major burnout red flags for sure. but also maybe talking about engines as specialized tools instead of ubiquitous ones isn;t so bad?#i mean there's definitely trends. ramming down RPGs down frostbite's throat has never worked well#while decima is tearing up the open worlds and tech fidelity quotas like nbd even on prev gen#is it really about implementation at this point#maybe some engines just. work best for certain types of hard goals. and choosing that right is what matters#i pkayed this after ragnarok and that game looks embarassing next to hfw. and I'm not even saying it flippantly. I stand by what i've said#shorter games less scope lower fidelity etc. for healthier dev teams. but this can be a scalability tell tale? maybe using something#like decima can mean an easier time for a standard EA dev cycle *without* hitting these insane fidelity goals. just thinking out loud#cause forever salty about frostbite. probably wrong but hey! I am on a blogging website famous for its phobia of deeper contexts#or maybe playing as aloy gave me that stupid self confidence juice#the way she bulldozes into delicate foreign policies with nothing but her ego and hutzpah really proves that whiteness is alive and well#in whatever variant of post-post-apocalypse this story is set into. they better interrogate her issues cause otherwise this plot will like#fizzle out under the weight of her self-righteousness lmao

The greatest mysteries in tech that I've received explanations for but still feel like mysteries:
How the fuck did they spend 10 billion dollars on horizon worlds and have something that looks and plays more shit than second life?
How the fuck is the star citizen single player not out yet in 2024?
Just imagine what would be possible with the kind of money those projects were given.

I've gotten myself in a mood for a story where society fell to zombies, but it's set just a bit in the future.
Walkie talkies and touch screen displays. Helmets with HUDs that when their power runs out turn transparent so the user can still see. Bio scanners that tell you if something is edible or not. Movement detecting sensors that send an alert if anyone has crossed their view used for knowing when zombies are about. People with robotic prosthetics that read neural inputs and react like the original hand. Sttlements are defended by physical defences not to drain energy during the nights. Hunting with firearms and bows, farming with botany textbooks and crop rotations.
And there's like, the one settlement in the forest around which the story revolves. No other around for miles, but that doesn't mean hopelessness. Very much a feel good thing, where scouts and hunters help to create safe zones for the kids to play in. They have enough food, they live with nature.
Zombies only come at night, but there still are some during the day, so if you go out, don't get lost, and have a pistol on you.
But if someone gets turned, there's no way of turning them back. No medicine works, there is no cure. Don't get bitten.
Idk. Society fell, but humanity didn't.
