Week three, Ideas
This week has been about bringing the ideas together. While we have some information about the Mayaca, how to present such information is another matter. I did not get the chance to reach out to Maitland Art and History yet in order to see what they may be wanting in terms of an exhibit, so Madeline and I have been doing an informal questioning of people we know. Specifically, we have been asking about what such people would be interested in learning or seeing about a native population for their own town. Generally it comes down to wanting to see material culture. That may not be super feasible, particularly when considering few artifacts remain and those that do are owned by the state. They will likely not be lent out, and even if they are willing the space constraints may make that untenable.
So while we wait to hear directly from Maitland A&H, this coming week is about brainstorming ways to create a more memorable exhibit. This will likely have to rely on images. One thing I think might be fun would be to incorporate local artists. Perhaps have a local interpretation of the famous Owl Totem next to information and pictures of the original. This could also bring in the art aspect of Maitland A&H while tying back to the Mayaca in a meaningful way. Alternatively, having information about the Mayaca and totem then possibly an art station to reimage it for visitors. This could be done with basic paper and pencils. However, the logistics involved would be much more difficult at a daily level for that to work properly. And personally, the idea of giving visitors writing implements that could mark up other parts of the exhibit has the potential to be disastrous. So that idea may be dependent on how Maitland A&H feels and if they have done something like that before, as they may have some “best practices” that can make this a reality. Either way, many of the people questioned on the idea of an exhibit wanted to walk away actually interacting with material. So many of these brainstormed ideas rely on creating a way for that to happen without the actual artifacts.
Going forward we also need to consolidate a resource guide for future researchers in a clear and easily accessible manner. Much of the information we have comes from secondary sources and other researchers, but they are generally clear as to where the information they are sharing can be found in primary documents. So creating a first source bibliography for the sake of the historian at Maitland A&H would be vital if this is to be successful. This can be done in addition to the white paper which would lay out the information, but having the sources of such is critical for verification and further research. The material aspects of the Mayaca can also be brought in by contacting rangers at Hontoon Island State Park on possible lending or collaboration. At the very least they might be willing to send pictures, hopefully recent and as the artifacts were found. Either way, we have some work ahead of us in creating a story of the Mayaca.

Maitland A&H Project Blog Entry 2
Since last entry I have continued collecting information leads on the Mayaca/Macoya people. I have reached out to a few historical societies in the area as well as continue web-based research. I’m especially excited to head over to Hontoon Island State Park, where a Mayacan totem was excavated in the 1950’s, to see the area and how they’ve including the Mayacas in the park’s interpretation.
Previously, I’d never really been drawn to Florida history before. My family is not from Florida and although we ended up here while I was still in grade school, the little bit of Florida history I received in my education was never presented in a matter that encouraged my further engagement. However, this project has really started to change that for me. I’m excited to get to know Florida better as it remains my home, and am inspired to get out to more sites, museums, and parks to learn more in the field.
Moving forward with this project I’ve been thinking a lot about how it relates to our boarder themes of our course. We talked a lot about interpreting difficult histories, rewriting erasures, and how public memory holds traumatic history, and how to interpret matters in a manner that honors the realities of all sides of history without becoming too cumbersome for public consumption. Regarding difficult histories, we’ve touched on the genocides and displacement of native Americans by European settlers through one of our readings regarding the plantation home of a slave-owning Cherokee Chief. Discussing these displacements had me thinking a lot about the experience of the Mayaca people.
Early Spanish accounts of the Mayacas paint them as territorial, war minded, and generally violent. However, I can’t help but question how the circumstances of Spanish arrival may have influenced the Mayacas to present themselves in such a manner. What Mayacan behaviors and traditions were misunderstood by the Spanish? What were traditions and artifacts were erased in the record, and under what circumstances? While definitive answers to so many of my questions will never be known, I still think it is important to keep these questions in the back of my mind while I continue to study them. Although, I must also keep in mind the after mentioned line of where historic inquiry passes beyond the limits of public engagement for the sake of this project

The Owl of Hontoon Island.
This owl was pulled from the St. Johns River in 1955. It was carved about 700 years ago, likely by the Mayacan people who lived in this area. The purpose of this carving is not know, as the Mayacans were wiped out by the Spanish. Smaller, similar artifacts were also found in the river around Hontoon Island in 1978. Replicas of these artifacts can be found near the visitor center.
