Match Review: Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle United
Shit defending, shit chance creation, shit energy... but thank god for Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro.
Tumblr media
United started the game dreadfully and just FOUR MINUTES IN a Newcastle attack down their left flank with Lewis Hall let the left back free to cross inch-perfect into the box for Isak to nod home. Top finish, top assist, but the fault lies with United rather than being excellence from Newcastle.
Why was Mazraoui tucked in as RWB towards the RCB position when United tracked back? Go to the man!
Why did Maguire not jump for the ball?
If Maguire didn't because he felt there was no pressure, why did Martinez not call out that Isak was there?
15 minutes later and more of the same nonsense happened: Antony Gordon down the left flank, unpressured by Mazraoui til too late, swings a lovely cross into the middle of the box for Joelinton to tuck into the net, with a scrambling Martinez clinging on to his shoulder trying to wrestle in on the leap for the ball. Poor. Poor awareness, poor positioning, poor result.
United had their moments, with Mainoo putting Casemiro through unchallenged to hit an awful attempt on goal. Hojlund also came close to scoring at the far post, Leny Yoro nodded just wide off a corner shortly after he was subbed on, and Harry Maguire headed off the post to the despair of United fans with our one shot on target for the night. Tragic.
The frustration is that even playing so poorly to start with, United didn't look out of the game. The problem was that we didn't look like scoring either, and that stalemate was down to Newcastle relaxing than them having "been lucky" for their goals.
Tumblr media
In the 33rd minute, manager Ruben Amorim substituted Joshua Zirkzee for Kobbie Mainoo - a move that made a huge difference to United's ability to hold the ball and to win it back. Kobbie has been a little off the boil of late but this was a very solid performance; not a worldie or a great showing, but a good performance in the face of nearly everyone else being abjectly shit. Same goes for Leny Yoro and kind of Andre Onana. That's it. Everyone else was bloody useless.
Rasmus Hojlund in particular was poor, which is why I feel sorry for Zirkzee. One is meant to be a goalscorer, one is a creator type. I can see why Zirkzee was benched for Mainoo, but Rasmus could have been taken another day. He was clumsy in duels when trying to be strong, and generally outwitted by Schar. He couldn't barge past with athletic prowess but his movement was poor and his control was so-so. He'd benefit from being backup to a more prolific CF to learn from their game and develop his own over time. He's very promising, but at present I worry he'll be another Elanga; ran into the ground, judged too harshly, sold on, and then allowed to flourish elsewhere at our expense. He's too expensive to do that with. We must work with him.
Tangentially, I also didn't like the booing/cheering shit as the Dutchman left (rumoured to have cried down the tunnel and returned after he composed himself). We're playing shit and he's part of that, it's true, but we don't single out individuals unless they do something truly bad (ala Greenwood).
Tumblr media
The positives then (a short section unsurprisingly).
Mainoo brought a lot of control to midfield, and composure to our tempo.
Yoro was a lot better than Martinez, and should start versus Liverpool on Sunday.
Onana didn't fuck up, even though he conceded twice.
No injuries.
United actually had better possession and passing accuracy than Newcastle, we just can't attack or defend aside that lmao.
Tumblr media
The misery continues. A cack December, and we start 2025 with away trips to Liverpool in the league and Arsenal in the FA Cup. The only vague positive is that both Bruno and Ugarte are back from suspension, and if Kobbie's refound his form... maybe midfield fires back. Maybe.
Still, stock up on biscuits, booze, feel good films... loan a friend's pet dog... just look after yourselves, because it'll get worse before it gets better.

It’s a default position
I realise I sound like a stuck record. But that’s because nothing is changing and we are plunged firmly into a worn out groove.
Last year, watching us at home to Arsenal, Carl was filming us talking in the stand. I said to him ‘there isn’t one player in our squad I would miss if they were sold’. Fast forward a calendar year and the feeling is the same. I wouldn’t miss any of them.
I can still remember the slightly sickened feeling I had when someone at school told me Nigel Callaghan was being sold to Derby. When Richard Johnson was linked to Leeds it felt almost impossible to envisage him in a kit other than the yellow and black.
Last year, Watford’s Player Of The Season was Hassane Kamara. Quickly and without resorting to YouTube can you remember ANYTHING that he did that made him stand out for this award? Tricky isn’t it? He picked up that trophy because he was the best of a wholly terrible bunch. Picking up POTS last year was akin to winning an award for having the best wasting disease. When he was sold to Udinese in the summer it barely registered. In fact I think I might have given out a small joyful yelp. Imagine my disappointment when he was immediately loaned back.
Tumblr media
If the current squad can be compared to a steaming pile of dung (and, let’s be honest here, they can) Joao Pedro and Ken Sema are the two small shoots of something more green and pretty growing out of it.
When credible sources announced Pedro’s transfer to Newcastle was ‘a done deal’ in August, Peter and myself were guests on the ‘Loaded Mag’ NUFC podcast not once but twice to discuss how much he’d be missed at Watford.
But lately he seems to do a lot of running around getting fouled starting attacking moves 25-30 yards deeper than he should be. He’s not the ‘exciting number 10’ we informed Loaded Mag he was going to be at St James’ Park.
Sema huffs and puffs and does the work that you would expect someone in his position to do. The fact that he’s standing out like some kind of footballing wizard is actually more on the disinterested bunch of wallies he shares a dressing room with. He’ll probably get Player Of The Season this year.
Tumblr media
Who will miss Keinan Davis, Hamza Choudhury or Henrique Araújo when their loans expire? Who will be utterly gutted when Sarr gets a move for 65% less than we paid for him?
Not me. And I was saying all of this about the Watford squad twelve months ago too.

[ad_1] Image: Arsenal and Manchester United Twitter/X At first glance, it seems almost absurd to suggest that Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, is feeling the heat as much as Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup third round clash at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal sit second in the English Premier League and are realistically the only team that can stop Liverpool and Arne Slot from winning a record-equalling 20th title. They’re also third in the new-look UEFA Champions League, poised for an automatic place in the last 16. And though Newcastle United shocked them in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final, Arsenal more than have the firepower to turn things around in the NorthEast in February. In contrast, United sit 13th in the league table, with a goal difference of -5. They’re closer to the relegation places than a spot in Europe and, but for the unexpected draw against Liverpool at Anfield, Amorim would have spent the lead-up to this game fielding uncomfortable questions about his future. Instead, that almost-freakish result in snow and rain – United played their best game of the season, Liverpool their worst – has brought forth a surge of optimism about the Amorim project. At Arsenal, despite the team’s lofty status, there are more than a few murmurs of discontent. Having pushed Manchester City to the final day in last season’s title race, this was supposed to be the campaign in which Arsenal made the decisive move. Once Rodri limped off with a season-ending knee injury when the two teams drew 2-2 at the Etihad in late September, it looked to be Arsenal’s title to lose. Instead, they lie six points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in hand. The football, with Martin Odegaard missing a chunk of games and Bukayo Saka injured again, has often been turgid and uninspired. Till their holiday-season stutter, Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea looked the team better equipped to challenge Liverpool. Arsenal’s failure to take advantage of Liverpool’s slip-ups – home draws against Fulham and United, and a 3-3 thriller away to Newcastle – has only added to the frustration. Mikel Arteta and Ruben Amorim (Image: @m8arteta & @RubenAmorims) While many praise the job Arteta has done in making Arsenal title contenders again, not everyone is convinced by the coach who cut his coaching teeth under Pep Guardiola at City. “Why are we giving this Arsenal team a lot of credit by saying how well they’ve done?” asked Roy Keane on the Stick To Football podcast not long ago. “This Arsenal team’s done nothing, they haven’t won anything. The FA Cup was five years ago. There’s no evidence to suggest that Arsenal can get over the line.” And while Gabriel Jesus has discovered a rich vein of scoring form over the holidays, Arteta’s failure to sign a blue-chip striker – Alexander Isak’s opportunistic finishing in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win was salt in the wound – has come in for increasing scrutiny. Arsenal have the funds, but will they break the bank in January to try and lure an Isak or an Omar Marmoush? For Amorim, such spending is a pipedream right now. Unless United sell some big-name players, Amorim will not be able to make high-quality additions to a squad that is ill-equipped to play his chosen 3-4-3. There is considerable talk of Marcus Rashford leaving on loan, but if the likes of Kobbie Mainoo or Alejandro Garnacho were to be sold to balance the books, there would be a mutiny at the Stretford End. The draw at Liverpool has bought Amorim time, but with only Manuel Ugarte of the summer signings looking a definite upgrade on what was there earlier, it’s hard to see a challenge for the European places. Missing out on the Champions League for a second successive season would then mean a catastrophic impact on the finances and the war chest available to spend next summer. This is the 16th FA Cup meeting between the two most successful sides in the competition’s history – only Everton and Liverpool (19) have played more – but the match is almost a sideshow next to the questions being asked of both Iberian managers.
United and Amorim need a trophy to salvage what has been a disastrous season so far, but Arteta’s need, after years of being the nearly man, is no less. Matchday! United Women are finally back for our first game of 2025 and we begin our FA Cup defence at home against West Bromwich Albion.
The Reds headed into the winter break with a 1-0 loss against Chelsea and successive wins against Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Crystal Palace.
We come into the game as favourites but the team will be determined to avoid any complacency on the day.
United will be without Hayley Ladd for the first time in six seasons, as she has recently completed a transfer to Everton after 110 matches with the club (we wish her well). She will also team up with 18-year-old Emma Watson, who has also joined the Toffees, on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Let's have it, girls. Come on United!

Home loan rates drift higher as Newcastle Permanent and other mutuals hike
It’s been another quiet week on the home loans market with three smaller lenders increasing their variable rates while one also dropped its one-year fixed rate offerings. It seems mortgage lenders are taking a breather after the last of the pandemic-era rate fixers have been reabsorbed into the lending market. Certainly, no one is holding […]

How to Find the Best Solar Companies in Newcastle
When you are looking for a solar installer Newcastle, there are many factors to consider. It is important to find a company with a good reputation and a knowledgeable team of experts. They will help you determine the best solar energy solution for your home.
A physicist at the University of Newcastle has used organic printed solar cells to power screens and displays. These cells are less than one millimetre thick and can be produced for under $10 per square metre.
Reputation
A reputable solar Newcastle company will provide you with high-quality products that are safe and easy to use. They also have an excellent customer support team to help you with any questions you may have. They will also be transparent and give you a clear understanding of how the entire system works. This will ensure that you are not taken advantage of or confused by any of the complex technology involved.
Investing in a solar power system Newcastle can help reduce your reliance on fossil fuels and save you money on electricity bills. Moreover, it will improve the value of your home or business and make a positive environmental impact. You can also benefit from rebates and feed-in tariffs to offset the upfront costs. Plus, the excess energy you produce can be sent back to the grid, which could result in a zero-cost utility bill. Two million Australian households are already utilising renewable energy sources, and the number is growing.
Feed-in Tariffs
When it comes to generating your own power in Newcastle, the best solution is a rooftop solar company Newcastle system with a good feed-in tariff. This is a payment from your electricity retailer for the energy your system produces, which is credited to your bill in the form of dollar-for-dollar or a percentage of the value. The current benchmark rate for NSW is 6.2 to 10.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, although some retailers offer much higher feed-in tariffs.
Domestic solar panel installations are on the rise in New South Wales, and it’s easy to see why. Rising energy costs and awareness of renewables savings are pushing many homeowners to invest in a roof-top solar power system.
However, it’s important to consider the total cost of ownership when choosing a new solar system. A great feed-in tariff is one thing, but it must be combined with low usage and supply rates to get the best results. This is why WATTever’s comprehensive electricity comparison makes it so easy to find the right deal for you.
Installation Costs
With Australia’s abundant sunshine, solar panels are one of the most popular forms of renewable energy for homes. In fact, the country has one of the highest rooftop solar uptakes in the world, thanks to generous government subsidies.
Many homeowners in Newcastle choose to invest in a solar power system because of its cost-effectiveness. They can save on electricity bills, and also reduce their carbon footprint by using green energy. They can also sell any excess energy back to the grid for some extra cash.
However, before you decide to make the switch to solar, it is important to consider the costs of installing a solar panel system in your home. A good newcastle solar companies will help you determine whether you’re eligible for any rebates or subsidies and can provide you with a quote for your project. Additionally, they will take care of all the paperwork and permits required to install your solar panels.
Financing
The cost of solar panels in Newcastle can be steep, but shopping around for quotes and taking advantage of local incentives can help you save money. You can also take advantage of the 30% federal tax credit to further reduce your upfront costs. If you can’t afford to pay for a solar system outright, there are several financing options available. Many of these are similar to home improvement loans and offer a $0 down payment, while others allow you to deduct the entire investment on your federal taxes.
A typical grid-tied solar system will generate more power than you consume, allowing you to send that energy back into the grid. This process is known as net metering, and it allows you to lower or even eliminate your electric bill. It can also be beneficial for the environment, as it cuts down on the need to produce electricity from fossil fuels.
