Hodgkin's Lymphoma Treatment: Effective Treatment Options for Hodgkin's Lymphoma
Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs to destroy cancer cells. For Hodgkin's lymphoma, chemotherapy is usually the primary treatment. A combination of multiple chemotherapy drugs is used to attack the cancer from different angles. Some common chemotherapy drug combinations for Hodgkin's lymphoma include ABVD, BEACOPP and Stanford V.
ABVD is a combination of doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine. It is one of the most commonly used first-line treatments for Hodgkin's lymphoma. ABVD has fewer short-term side effects than other options but has a slightly higher chance of the cancer returning later.
BEACOPP is a more intensive chemotherapy regimen that contains bleomycin, etoposide, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone. The high-dose chemotherapy given before a stem cell transplant is much more intensive than standard treatments. This "ablative" therapy is better able to eradicate any hard-to-treat cancer cells. Though the procedure itself carries significant side effects and risks in the short term, autologous stem cell transplants have proven successful in many patients with recurrent or refractory Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Considerations for Hodgkin's Lymphoma Treatment
For a small proportion of high-risk Hodgkin's lymphoma cases, an allogeneic stem cell transplant from a donor may offer the best chance of cure. This procedure carries higher risks but can provide a powerful graft-versus-lymphoma effect from the donor's immune cells against any remaining cancer.
Clinical trials of newer therapies such as antibody therapies may provide additional options for certain relapsed or treatment-resistant Hodgkin's lymphoma cases. Precision medicines targeting specific genetic mutations in the cancer are also areas of active investigation. Lastly, lifestyle changes such as nutrition counseling, exercise recommendations and managing stress may help support physical and emotional well-being during and after Hodgkin's lymphoma treatments.
Overall, Hodgkin's lymphoma has highly treatable when appropriate therapies are available and matched to the disease risk factors and stage in each patient's case. Close monitoring after active treatment also allows for prompt intervention at the earliest signs of recurrence. With a personalized and diligent approach, most Hodgkin's lymphoma patients will ultimately achieve long-term remission or cure.
