Trials in this regard are currently going on in Bengaluru, New Delhi, and Hyderabad.
TVS said in a statement that the partnership highlights its commitment to strengthen electrification across diverse mobility segments and is in line with Swiggy’s many efforts to enable the adoption of EVs in its delivery fleet. As part of the MoU, TVS Motor and Swiggy will test the implementation of TVS Motor’s EV for food delivery and other on-demand services of Swiggy.
The two companies are also exploring the co-creation of sustainable and comprehensive solutions for Swiggy’s delivery partners. This will include working on customised packages like a need-specific product, flexible financing options and, connected services. Notably, the pilot will play a vital role in the adoption of EVs in food delivery and on-demand delivery services.
“TVS Motor Company has been at the forefront of delivering green and connected vehicles to our customers. Our collaboration with Swiggy is a key step towards strengthening the electrification of mobility in food delivery and last-mile delivery services, furthering the easy adoption of EVs amongst customers," said Manu Saxena, senior vice president – Future Mobility, TVS Motor Company.

“Swiggy has been pioneering the need for greater EV adoption. We believe they offer a sustainable solution in green mobility while also empowering our delivery partners to earn more. This pilot with TVS will help us better understand the needs of the delivery fleet and the steps we can take to make our operations greener and sustainable.” said Mihir Rajesh Shah, vice president (Operations) at Swiggy.

India’s Ather Energy raises $51 million to grow its electric scooters business
There’s more money racing into India’s increasingly-competitive two-wheeler market after electric scooter maker Ather Energy said today it has raised $51 million in new funding.
The round was led by early backer Sachin Bansal, the co-founder of Flipkart, who invested $32 million. The rest of the money was provided by Hero MotoCorp, which added $19 million in convertible debt, and venture debt VC firm InnoVen Capital which put in $8 million. The deal means that the six-year-old startup has raised around $90 million to date.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Tarun Mehta, co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy, said the startup will use the fresh capital to expand to new cities, and ramp up its manufacturing capacity and supply chain network. Ather’s scooters, currently available only in Bengaluru, will be launched in Chennai followed by other unspecified cities, he said.
Ather Energy will also attempt to produce 20,000 to 25,000 scooters a year through its own manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, Mehta revealed. The company is also keen to expand its product portfolio, which currently numbers just two scooter models — Ather 340 and 450. By 2023, the startup is aiming to grow its presence to over 30 cities, with over 6,500 charging stations — up from 38 currently — and production capacity of a million scooters in a year.
There’s some way to go before it can reach those lofty goals, but Ather has built a fan following in the nation for its scooters in recent years. Its scooters sport high storage battery density (2.4 KWh Lithium-ion), a dashboard for navigation information, 75 km of mileage, and take less than three hours to fully charge.
That’s led Mehta to call the Ather 450 “the most powerful smart scooter in the Indian market.”
Ather Energy offers its scooters to consumers in three ways: outright purchase, purchase with a subscription for value-added features, and leasing, an option it only recently introduced.
The company’s competitors include Vogo, Bounce, and Yulu, which earlier this month inked a deal with Uber to conduct a trial in the nation. Another big name is also involved: Uber rival Ola has invested about $100 million in startup Vogo, which operates in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
Mehta said that he thinks electric scooters are a good fit for ride-hailing giants, and that’s something he is open to exploring at a later stage. But for now, his startup will stick to its B2C (business to consumer) play.
In a prepared statement, Sachin Bansal, who has emerged as one of the most prolific VCs in India, said, “Their [Ather Energy’s] focus on end to end customer experience will open up new revenue opportunities and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India. The future is electric and I am excited to be a part of this journey in shaping the future.”

Electric two wheeler maker Ather Energy gets another $12Mn from Hero MotoCorp
TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ather-450x-the-tech-portal-300×158.jpg 300w, https://TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ather-450x-the-tech-portal-768×405.jpg 768w, https://TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ather-450x-the-tech-portal-380×200.jpg 380w, https://TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ather-450x-the-tech-portal-800×421.jpg 800w, https://TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ather-450x-the-tech-portal-1160×611.jpg 1160w, https://TheTechMedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ather-450x-the-tech-portal.jpg 1471w” sizes=”(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px”>
Ather Energy, the much storied Indian electric two wheeler company has received an investment worth nearly $12Mn from Hero MotoCorp, in turn raising the latter’s stake in the company by a further 3%. Hero had invested Rs.205 cr in 2016, lending the company a 31.27% stake prior to today’s investment.
The startup, which offers electric scooters, plans to use this investment to scale up distribution to 20 cities by the end of 2021, with a plan to make an entrance in Pune, Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad by the end of October 2020.
Ather Energy was incubated in IIT Madras back in 2013. The Technology Development Board of IIT-M and Srini V Srinivasan, IIT alumnus and founder of Aerospike had provided Rs.45 lacs to start the company. However, the fossil fuel heavy market of India was simply not impressed by the idea of building smart electric scooters for the Indian market, and thus in early 2014, Ather Energy was facing a shortage of funds. The founders then approached Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, founders of Flipkart who believed in Ather Energy’s vision and invested $1 mn in the startup. The company took off from there, and in May 2015 bagged $12 mn from Tiger Global.
Last May, the company raised $51 million in a funding round led by Sachin Bansal, who alone infused $32 million.
They currently have two models in public. The Ather 450 and 450X are fully electric scooters that embrace top speeds of 80kmph. While the former can get from 0 to 40kmph in 3.9 seconds, the latter can do it in 3.3, and also boasts a range of about 85 kms, 10 kms higher than the Ather 450. These are produced at the company’s Whitefield production plant, with the company already developing a new manufacturing plant in Hosur to accomodate more production orders.
The Ather Grid system, “an extensive public charging network in your city,” has established 31 fast charging points in Bengaluru and 10 charging points in Chennai. The company aims to introduce more cities to the concept of EV charging stations, and expand its Grid across the country in the next 5 years.
In 2013, the Indian government had launched the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020, that aimed to faster adoption and manufacturing of hybrid and electric vehicles in the country. According to Greenwatch’s Climate Risk Index, India’s rank declined from 14th to 5th in 2 years. This encourages the fact that more EV vehicles are needed on Indian roads.

India’s Ather Energy raises $51 million to grow its electric scooters business – TechCrunch
http://tinyurl.com/y4rdfgs2 There’s more money racing into India’s increasingly-competitive two-wheeler market after electric scooter maker Ather Energy said today it has raised $51 million in new funding. That’s led Mehta to call the Ather 450 “the most powerful smart scooter in the Indian market.” Ather Energy offers its scooters to consumers in three ways: outright purchase, purchase with a subscription for value-added features, and leasing, an option it only recently introduced. The future is electric and I am excited to be a part of this journey in shaping the future.” Source link
