The relationship may be new but it's long enough for him to realize that she's out of his league so he's trying to sabotage her trip where she might meet someone more compatible in terms of interests, fitness, knowing that horseback riding is about actually getting on a horse and not just dressing like Woody from Toy Story, etc.
