▪️Leena: Absolutely who says discipline is to be harsh to others and let them do the court martial but yes it is the tone of voice to handle the not only the students but to tame our pets to be friendly but with the feeling of respect and understanding to be in consonance of what our ethics to be .
Tone of voice is how we use our language the use of words alongwith the body language ,can be facial features or the hands movement that matter the most ,one can be too sweet in voice with the humbleness in it but can discipline a person
▪️Vijayalakshmi Menon: A teacher's voice should be firm and steady. On no account should a teacher shout at students. The teacher should speak with confidence which will make the students understand that the teacher is knowledgeable and means business
▪️Dr Sekar Seenivasan: You are right. There was strict discipline in my gurukula days. But not a single day my Guru used harsh words or he never scolded us in patasala. He was strict in making us memorise our daily lessons but at the same time compassionate enough the we never felt the stress of being away from home. Even in eating and sleeping habits our Guru used to tell a wonderful story and explained the moral. He allowed us to understand ourselves the ways and means. But for any outsider it was a strict campus of learning and Guru was a strict disciplinarian ever.
▪️Dr Parvathi: A teacher sud be strict as well as polite at the same time ।she sud be like a coconut।At the same time students sud feel both comfortable of asking freely questions in the classes as well as scared of their misbehavior in any manner in front of teacher।This totally depends on teacher how she presents herself in front of students and how much capable and knowledgeable she is as per her subject knowledge is concern and handling of class is concerned
If the students have respect for the teacher then the students will be automatically disciplined and obey the teacher so its ultimately upto the teacher that how far she is successful in gaining and losing the confidence and trust of the students।EVERYWHERE STRICTNESS DOESN'T WORK AND EVERYWHERE POLITENESS DOESN'T WORK SO SHE SHOULD KNOW HOW TO BALANCE BOTH AND GAIN CONFIDENCE AND TRUST OF STUDENTS WHICH WILL INTURN PROMOTE DISCIPLINE
▪️AZEEZ: So, How is your teaching voice?
There is a good reason behind my question.
Because, being a teacher in a heterogenous group of pupils in a classroom your tone of voice affects communication because tone has a big part to do with how you convey.
If you say something in an angry tone, the other person could feel angry or guilty.
If you say something in an annoyed tone, they could feel bad, or equally annoyed at the tone.
However, if you say things in a happy tone, the other person will feel equally happy and take a liking to you.
Tone of voice is one of the factors that we must consider seriously when trying to engage or connect with people.
The other factors include the words (with whom you are talking to use), his/her body movement ( body language), questions, etc.
▪️Madhumita Jana: A loving and compassionate tone of a teacher helps in building a good rapport between the teacher and student. Once the teacher is successful in building a good rapport with his /her students, the learners automatically accept firmness from the teacher with respect. Right tone is very important as per the situation in the classroom.
▪️Suraj: What I feel we need not destroy anyone's emotions. In fact we all are disciplined. With the rising of sun we get up and at night go to bed. We never take breakfast at night and supper in the morning. This shows we are already disciplined. Actually we have created a comfort zone in our life and so we goes in organized in daily life. Coming back to students how can they be disciplined at once when they have seen their own loved ones doing work at their own comfort. As they see, so they become. Harsh but true! isn't it? I will relate one of my experience here. A few years back while I was working as coordinator, I used to take a round of preschool section everyday for a few minutes. While taking round I could see children were busy in attending their teachers , meanwhile unintentionally, I could pick up of toffee wrappers or bits of paper, if lying there. While I was doing this I could see one or two children peeping out from their class and looking at me with excitement. It was so happened a few days I couldn't go to school because of my ill heath and then other day when I rejoined and was on round to see how's everything, I could a boy of class prep was going to washroom. Before he could go to the washroom, there was a biscuit wrapper and an used eraser lying there. Before I could think much about him, the boy put the wrapper in dustbin and rushed towards me with the used eraser in hand and handed over it me saying sir...sir it was lying the re. I was amazed how a five years boy watching my small action so closely that I was unaware about. I never asked these children to follow me nor I used any voice yet, I got something interesting to learn. So, sometimes for teaching something important one has to go beyond books and text. I myself have heard student talking this way, wait we will submit the work to him. Don't worry even if it is late he is not going to say anything. On the other hand there are students who also say, no...no , she is not going to listen, if she has asked us to submit her today it means today. One may say they are fearful, but the fact is in their subconscious mind they are following their actions.
Since this is focused even on tone as it reads Tone of voice ,so as I have expresseed, verbal tone can bring changes but just for a day or two but Positive nonverbal tone can impress children from inside for what we actually we them to do and that is through action !!
▪️AZEEZ: Your teaching voice is the one you use when you're standing in front of your class.
It's your professional voice and often different in quality from your day-to-day speaking voice.
Is your voice for speech or to teach.?
How to modulate it in your classroom?
Nature of your voice is out of sound. By knowing structure of sound, one can modulate sound into voice.
Let's know the structure of sound first.
▪️Dr Sekar Seenivasan: Modulation comes naturally. Most of the time it is conversation type and some times it is narrative. During description it is also dramatic
▪️Padmini: I think no teacher goes into the class with the thought of giving speech to the students but with the intention of teaching
Of course, there will be modulation in tone depending on the situation but never rude or insulting at any time.
The teacher's voice has to take different forms like being friendly, strict, disciplined, crystal clear, understanding, adjustable, humble etc etc...
It all depends on what's happening at the moment.
Just my opinion
▪️Dr. Balasubramanian: Good evening sir
Nice discussion
My voice is with Medium sound , never big with volume , very caring , well defined with subject and always with many alternate words/synonyms in explanation
When we are strong with subject , teacher won’t worry about any questions or questions from 360 degree
If the questions is very close to the topics , I can explain or postpone the unwanted topics/question to Analaysis since few/some of them gets confuse or deviate
▪️Dr Sekar Seenivasan: Body language assists modulation in a class room.
Nodoubt classroom teaching will be with a different tone and the same during assembly like address for the same will be different.
Yet again during functions it will get automatically modified. In the classroom mainly interaction type it is all extempore.
▪️Sangeetha Thyagarajan: i agree, most of us speak very differently to our students when compared to how we speak with our colleagues or friends or even our own children.
▪️Dr Sekar Seenivasan: But maintaining prompt space and language style a veteran teacher always make his signature through confident and commanding. At times authoritative too to inculcate positive and confidence in the matter deliverable
▪️Sangeetha Thyagarajan: We tend to talk with a calmer and confident tone to inspire a clearer and crisp learning atmosphere. We are trying to be explicit in our instructions and have clarity with the knowledge transfer - hence the voice that waits to see the understanding in the eyes of the students. Now, with online classes too teachers wait patiently to see if all have understood the concepts... our patience is conveyed in our voice
▪️Suraj: Once again the tone of voice, not just about what you say, and how you say it.
*When you speak, other people “read” your voice in addition to listening to your words.
*Things they pay attention that include your timing, your modulation, your pace, how loud you speak, your tone and sounds that convey understanding, such as “ahh” and “uh-huh.”
* Think about how your tone of voice can indicate sarcasm, anger, affection, or confidence.
▪️Dr Sekar Seenivasan: His subject expertise and proficiency will be explicit.
Students react without inhibition or exhaustion. It should be palatable and never harsh with any intention. Face is the index of mind while voice is the index of thoughts.
Even a dull students are motivated by sound of a teacher. Even his silence speaks. Careful selection of words in to sentences during utterances in the classroom is solicited since saying sorry after careless or wrong pronunciation will be an object of mockery.
Imitating others voice to be restricted to the need only.
▪️Debebrata Biswas UNV: In reincarnation cycle, as per the Law of Conservation of Energy, our youngers were actually our ELDERS in previous bodies ...
Hence, they deserve respect ...
Our words, body language, expressions should make them very comfortable and confident ... They should feel themselves safe and well taken care of ...
They will be nourished and nurtured in a conducive warm ambiance only ...
As Acharyas or Educators - if we walk our talk, we love our nation, our subject knowledge is strong, then students will automatically and spontaneously connected with us forever and ever ...
They will resonate with our frequency and wavelength ...
Journey will be simple harmonic for both of us ...
▪️Sweta Srivastava: A teachers attitude and aura play a key role to motivate children...even the dullest chapter she or he can teach with full excitement just to generate the interest among students.
▪️Debebrata Biswas UNV: Wonderful discussion is going .... Gratitude to all Esteemed Educators here ...
Unparallel vibration in this platform ...
Feel myself fortunate and enriched ...
▪️Vijayalakshmi Menon: Teachers' voice is really powerful. The teacher has to modulate her voice according to the situation and context. Voice should be firm and stern not harsh when the teacher wants to show displeasure , should have a mother's loving tone wherever she has to reaffirm that she cares . Voice modulation will definitely build trust on the teacher.
Never to falter , this happens when we are not sure of the topic or content ourselves, therefore enter the classroom with adequate knowledge of the subject
Tone of voice of a teacher depends on the level of the class for example in preprimary and primary classes the tone and modulation of voice should be soft and sweet to catch the attention of the students.
▪️AZEEZ: Structure of Sound
1. Pitch
2. Quality
3. Loudness
Pitch is a perceptual property of sounds that allows their ordering on a frequency-related scale, or more commonly, pitch is the quality that makes it possible to judge sounds as "higher" and "lower" in the sense associated with musical melodies.
Ex: High pitch voice.....sings with broader band width.....long voice....
Quality of sound: As different sources produce different sounds, the timbre helps us to distinguish between them. A sound of good quality is pleasant to listen.
Loudness: The loudness is a sensation of how strong a sound wave is at a place. It is important to a teacher. A teacher may have been an expert in their subject but their voice didn't communicate in a way that inspired our students to want to know more.
Otherwise students may wait for a chance to end our talk in the classroom.
Now let us see:
Do you know what affect your teaching voice has?
If you know your subject, have prepared your lessons carefully to meet the needs of your students and are still having difficulty maintaining attention, it might be time to consider your voice.
Consider your voice in the way given below:
{
"Prosodic characteristics such as adequate pauses, precise articulation, and lower speech rate are key resources for a teacher’s expressiveness.
}
The above tips may help you in the modulation of the voice in the classroom and to capture the students’ attention, reinforcing the importance of the voice as a didactic tool in the educational process."
In a nutshell it means that what you do with your body while you explain the lesson is as influential as the words themselves.
If you want energized, focused, actively listening students then you need to mirror that in your actions.
The trick is to SHOW while you are TELLING what you've got to share is exciting, relevant and important to follow the below:
Your body language, tone of voice, and words must match each other.
Where do I begin to improve my tone of voice?
1. With body language
A great start to re-energizing your teaching voice is to understand body languag You try either try to understand your own body language, if in case does not suit for your present profession , you do teach yourself the body language.
Now
Why and how teach yourself body language?
Why?
Because when you're delivering a speech, appropriate, and controlled body language or gesture will help you deliver your message effectively.
And if you're not aware of your own unconscious, habitual mannerisms or body language you could be seriously undermining your speech with unnecessary distracting, or even inappropriate movement.
When you know what you do, you can change it and gain more control over how your presentation is received.
Now how to teach ourselves required body language?
Please practice the tips given below for making them work easily and effectively for you.
• Work in front of a full length dress mirror
• If you can video yourself do so. Playing it back will give your important feedback.
• Go for mastery over one habit you want to modify or get rid of at a time rather than trying to banish the lot at once.
• Remember regular smaller practices are more effective than one or two intense longer workouts.
• Practice what you can throughout the day. You do not need to wait until you are at home to practice standing well, or relaxing your shoulders. Do it in the lunch queue, in the supermarket, anywhere.

2. Vocal variety
Do you know how your voice sounds in the ears of others?
Not how you think it sounds, but how it actually sounds?
The voice what we hear while we speak is not our own. We hear different our own voice which is totally different from the listeners.
And there is often an enormous, and surprising, difference.
We don't hear ourselves as others do and therefore are frequently unaware of the impact of our voice.
Our speech content may be excellent. It could match the audience's needs very well but unless it's delivered in an interesting way, few people will actively listen.
It's more difficult to sustain concentration when a person uses a one-flavor-fits-all voice.
To be blunt, it's boring and after awhile people will stop paying attention.
So we need variety in our tone.
▪️Pawan Gupta: As I have thoroughly researched and studied NLP ( Neuro linguistic programming) and it's role in teaching methods, according to me, some of the outcomes are.
Use of Linguistic Artistry makes huge impact on students and it improves your teaching skills too.
Body language of a teacher can boost the morale of the students and give them confidence to express their views effectively to the rest of the world.
Azeez: Vocal variety refers to the way we use our voice. It is a combination of elements: pitch, tone, volume and rate.
Before to understand vocal variety, we should have a goal for a good speaker in a class room.
Generally our voice modulation and its adjustments need the demand of listeners.
It is not we show our sweet voice or varying voice of our own. No. It should go according to nature of the listeners, I mean expectations from the audience.
So Every would-be competent speaker's ultimate goals are:
• To find the most appropriate expression • To meet the needs of their audience.
• To match those needs with the content of their speech.
• To have a range of vocal varieties in their skill set to select the most appropriate from.
This is what gives you vocal flexibility. The best and easy effective tips for vocal variety are as follows:
If you have access to a recorder, use it.
Often what we think we're doing with our voices is very different from the reality.
A recorder doesn't lie! It will help you hear where you need to put in the work.
Therefore record your voice before delivery and listen often and change your pitch, tone, volume and speaking rate.

Pause power
The right word may be effective but nothing has been ever effective as a rightly timed pause.
Pausing adds power; drama to your speech. Used well your silences will literally speak LOUDER than your words.
Learning when to pause, and for how long, is a skill, and like all skills it improves with practice.
A pause in the right place at the right time gives YOU:
1. Time to breathe properly
2. Time to consider what you're going to say next
3. Time to receive, and digest the feedback
4. Control over the pace of your speech.
5. The means to convey emotion

4
Speaking rate
Let's imagine your speech as a journey
Picture in your mind the layout of your speech.
You'll have an introduction, followed by a series of main ideas with supporting examples or illustrations. To finish there'll be a conclusion.
Now think of the thread, (the theme, the main ideas), linking it altogether.
It is similar to a road. When you give a speech you are taking your audience on a journey, a road trip.
Your mouth is the vehicle carrying both your message and your audience along. And you are its driver.
You are in complete control of how you deliver, or drive your speech from beginning to end.
How to practice speaking rate:
1. Read story books
2. Read a bulk report in magazines or newspapers.
3. Analyze your own recorded speech
4. Practice speech with your partner.
5. Listen to the good speakers
6. Practice patience

5
Breathing
How you breathe underpins voice quality and health.
Good breathing and postural habits are essential for maintaining a strong healthy voice.
Therefore you voice heath depends on your state of breath - Free or deep. Because good breathing reduces your anxiety, fear and all other psychological problems.
The reminder here is:
The less air we take in, the worse we feel and the less effectively we speak.
The less effectively we speak, the worse we feel, and the less air we take in.
Some breathing exercises are given below please:
Breathing exercise 1:
Some breathing exercises are given below please:
Breathing exercise 1:
• Stand with your feet a comfortable shoulder width apart.
• Support the weight of your body through your hips and legs rather than locking your knees.
• Consciously release and relax your shoulders.
• If you're holding your stomach in, let it go.
• Place your hands on your stomach.
• Breathe in through your nose to the count of four. Count slowly. As you inhale feel your diaphragm rising.
• Breathe out through your mouth to the count of four and now feel your diaphragm expanding.
• Do three rounds of inhale and exhale to a four count while making sure you keep your shoulders, stomach and legs relaxed.
• Once you have mastered the four count, increase it. Through regular
practice you will soon be able to extend it for an eight or even ten count.
▪️Dr Sekar Seenivasan: This breathing can be regularised by proper food (eating) habits of the speakers (teachers).
Our eastern philosophy clearly illustrates how sound is produced and the proper utilization of vocal chords
▪️Azeez: Breathing exercise 2:
• Stand with your feet a comfortable shoulder width apart.
• Support the weight of your body through your hips and legs rather than locking your knees.
• Consciously release and relax your shoulders.
• If you're holding your stomach in, let it go.
• Bring your palms together in the center of your chest.
• As you slowly inhale through your nose, keeping the palms of your hands together, raise your arms as high as you can above your head. At the same time raise yourself on to your toes.
• Hold your breath briefly at the top of your inhale keeping yourself fully stretched and pushing without strain toward to the sky.
• Exhale slowly through your mouth and now bring your arms slowly down and round back up to your chest, with your palms together in the starting position.
• At the same time slowly lower your feet.
• Repeat for ten rounds.
You can use this exercise for breath counting as well.
It has the same positive effects as the first exercise with the addition of gentle full body stretching.
Keep practicing:
Begin with one element.
For example, speech rate. Practice with that until you feel you have more control over it.
And then add another aspect. Now practice with that as well as the one previously mastered.
When you feel happy with your progress, add a third. Etc., etc.
Keep building. Keep practicing!
