Well, I may need to consider getting a Retrotink because I accidentally spilled water all over my Hauppauge. No idea if it still works or not. But I know they don't make this particular PVR model anymore (especially not with the composite and component capture via A/V).

It wasn't plugged in when doused, but I still don't know the extent of the damage. Most of the water affected the top of the device, which only has one semi-sealed button, so there could be a chance it'll still work (once I give it time to dry out). But I won't know for a while. If I'm lucky, only the top button will stick (which I never use anyways).

My Hauppauge was what I used to capture PS3 due to the HDMI restrictions, as well as other retro consoles, but now I can't even buy this model anymore. There are other recording workarounds, but this one was really good quality compared to some of the others. And I could easily route it through my Elgato for streaming.

And now it's all wet...I'm genuinely so sad.

There is another Hauppage model similar to this one I might be able to get, but just like with the other options, they're all super expensive. $150 minimum to $800. Which is...ouch.

I have tried Silicondust's free Windows 10 app for viewing copy-once channels. Silicondust is working on its own solution for recording copy-once channels on Windows 10 (requires a yearly subscription). In Device Manager, right click the Hauppauge product under Sound Video and Game Controllers with the exclamation mark and select Uninstall. If you have a USB product you might see multiple listings, please right click the first one on the list.

(For this example we will use the WinTV-HVR-950Q. ). On the Confirm window please check the box for “ Delete the driver software for this device” and click OK. Repeat the uninstall for the other two WinTV-HVR-950Q entries (Note: you won’t be asked to ‘confirm device uninstall’ again). Once the drivers are removed, right click on Sound, Video, Game controllers and click Scan for Hardware Changes.

Windows should now look online automatically for the 950Q drivers. Take a look after a few minutes if the drivers are installed automatically properly under Sound Video and Game Controllers. You will need to uninstall and reinstall the WinTV v7 application and the Channel database to fix this. You can also or remove Wintv7 using control panel 'add/remove programs'. Then you need to remove the backup Channel database:. Windows Vista, 7 and 8: Go to C: program data ( this folder is a hidden folder so if you do not see it you need to “show hidden folders “ in your search Options) once you can get to this folder you will see a folder label “Hauppauge”. Delete this folder. Windows XP: Go to C: documents and settings all users shared documents application data ( this folder is a hidden folder so if you do not see it you need to “show hidden folders “ in your search Options) once you can get to this folder you will see a folder label “Hauppauge” delete this folder.

Wintv V7 Serial Number

Then download the latest version of Wintv7 located in the support section of the website and reinstall (note: you must have your original CD to validate the download.) Settings.xml file is corrupt or missing Solution: Uninstall WinTV v7 and then reinstall WinTV 7. Click Windows Start - Control Panel and then click Programs and Features. Find Hauppauge WinTV 7 and double click on this. This will start the uninstall process. When you are finished uninstalling WinTV v7, reinstall it from your WinTV v7 CD.

Note on new product installs:

If you have recently purchased a new WinTV product and it came with a WinTV v8.5 Activation code, you can install WinTV v10 with this code. This only applies to unused WinTV v8.5 Activation Codes.

Installation notes for WinTV v10:

If you do not have a WinTV v10 Activation Code, you can purchase a new WinTV v10 Activation Code on the Hauppauge webstore.

If you have purchased an Activation Code for WinTV v10 with Extend from the Hauppauge Webstore, the latest version of WinTV v10 with Extend will be installed.

Installation on multiple computers: the WinTV application can be installed on as many PCs as needed as long as you use the same Hauppauge device. We link the serial number of your TV tuner (sometimes it's the MAC address) with the Activation code. So as long as you use the same Hauppauge device, you can install on more than one computer.

WinTV v10 installation instructions

The WinTV v10 will install Windows drivers before installing the WinTV v10 application.

Step 1: Download the WinTV v10 installer by clicking the download button above. The WinTV v10 installer is normally saved in the Download folder on your PC

Step 2: Run wintv10setup from the Download folder on your PC. If you see the message 'Windows Protected Your PC, Windows Smartscreen prevented an unrecognized app ...', click 'More info' and 'Run anyway'. Windows Smartscreen is a new 'feature' in Windows 10 to prevent new updates from being installed automatically.

Step 3: Halfway through the installation, a message will pop up asking for you to enter the Activation Code.

Step 4: At the Activation required screen, click on Enter Activation code and enter the activation code which was emailed to you or is printed on the WinTV v10 activation card. You do not need to enter the dashes, and you can use upper or lower case characters.

Step 5: When the installation is complete, you will find the WinTV icon on your Windows desktop. Double click on this icon and the WinTV application will run. On the first run of WinTV, it will automatically go through the TV source selection and will scan for channels.

How do I rescan channels?

Click on the setting button (Gear) in the lower left of the WinTV v10 application. Then click on the Devices tab and highlight your WinTV device and click Tuner Setup (see the first picture below).

In the Device Setup Wizard, you will see a list of TV formats which your Hauppauge TV tuner can support. Depending upon which Hauppauge tuner you have, you will have a choice of analog, digital or external inputs (see the second picture below). You can also select all formats and let the WinTV application show you what it finds in each format (if anything).

Click Next and Next and let WinTV scan for channels. The results should look like picture 3 below.

My PC is not waking up for recordings. How can I fix this?

If recordings aren't happening at all, you need to make sure Wake Timers are enabled (see screenshot). You can find this setting in Power and sleep settings: Power Options -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> Sleep -> Allow wake timers: Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsPower OptionsEdit Plan Settings On my PC it was set to 'Important Wake Timers only' and the PC wouldn't wake up for recordings.

@ronlodge I just hooked the pvr up to the TV and the computer and there was some software that I had to put on to the computer but once it’s on there I just open up a program and a little screen pops up on the computer showing what’s on the TV at the same time and then you press the record button. Once you stop the recording the video saves onto the computer and then I just use it for gifs and stuff.  This is the one I have. It’s pretty easy to use
