ALT Farewell Speech in Kahoku JHS
To all students, teachers, faculty members and guests, good morning!
Today is the last day in Junior High School, this school year. This is also my last day of teaching in town. Next school year, I will be transferred to the nearby town of Nakayama.
It’s been three years since I came to Kahoku and started working side by side with your English teachers as an Assistant Language Teacher in grades 5 & 6, although some of you were taught by Ms. Lauren.
But, I remember how little you were. And now, you are taller than me and you speak more English too. I’m so proud to see each and everyone in junior high school, learning much more with all your junior high school teachers.
Inasmuch as I want to stay in Kahoku and watch you all grow as you improve your English skills, I have to move on and experience teaching in another school. But don’t worry. As I said, Nakayama is just near. There is a good chance that I will see you again. I have my favorite soba & ramen shops to go back for. So, if you see me around town don’t hesitate to greet and talk to me. Of course, I prefer English.
Please continue enjoying developing your English skills. It is very useful when you travel abroad, meet foreign people or even study and work abroad in the years to come.
Enjoy your spring break. Thank you very much. I hope to see you in the future.
春休みを満喫してください。
Haruyasumi o mankitsu shite kudasai.
どうもありがとうございます。
Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu.
また会う日まで、みんな気をつけてね!
Mata auhimade minasan ogenkide!
Sincerely,
Ms. Vannida

The Rush of Spring: “Haruyasumi Moratorium Chugakusei,” “Fuyokoi” and “Haru No Arashi”
Ebi Chu’s conceptual focus on student life naturally invites an exploration of springtime — a season traditionally accompanied by graduation or a transition into a new phase of life. Ebi Chu capitalized upon the season since their indie days, though without the middle-school concept as a base, the early results like “The Tissue ~Tomaranai Seishun~” merely scanned as novelty records. Once the group settled on the concept, springtime has inspired a wide range of approaches and interpretations throughout the years.
“Haruyasumi Moratorium Chugakusei” (Spring Break Moratorium Middle-Schooler) from third album Anarchy sets up the basic premise in these spring songs: the arrival of a new season calls attention to a possible end of a relationship, and its fleeting nature forces the group to think how much that connection matters. “Haruyasumi” tackles the situation head on in a light-hearted way with Ebi Chu scrambling to make a move on their crush before spring break separates them forever. The lyrics get hammy to fit the classroom theme, throwing math references like “I want to show proof for the area of love with the two of us.” But paired with the gutsy rock music, the song captures the nervous rush of teenage romance.
Ebi Chu’s spring songs gain more emotional impact when they get sentimental. The bittersweet “Fuyukoi” (Winter Love) from second album Kinpachi doesn’t explicitly allude to graduation or classroom changes, but the group achingly sings about the arrival of spring as a moment of separation from their crush. The production sounds just as melodramatic with pensive pianos and sweeping strings drawing out the sadness from the moody rock music. The bridge bleeds with emotion — “if I can even keep this sorrow by my chest/ I can continue to move on forward,” they sing, treasuring even the potential heartbreak— and they sigh “please don’t forget me” as a finishing touch to their goodbye letter.
“Haru No Arashi” (Spring Storm) from fourth album Ebicracy plays like a loose sequel to “Fuyukoi” of sorts in both sound and theme. The music turns somber with pianos pounding a jagged riff to outline a heavier devastation, and the rock guitars aggressively rage like the season’s storm alluded in the title. The story takes place after a messy spring, and the idols deal with a familiar desire to act on their feelings before it’s too late.
“Haru No Arashi,” however, matures Ebi Chu to speak on a period later in life than its classroom pieces. The intensity in which the idols express their emotions as well as their fear to confess to them suggest matters much more complex than young love. A feeling of deep regret rings the most painful as the season starts to change: “I want to open up and share these feelings with you straight/ before I grow up,” they sing in the chorus.
Ebi Chu’s exploration of more complicated issues related to spring fittingly coincides with the idols’ actual growth. Public school faded from Ebi Chu’s view more and more, and the youngest members of the group were only a year away from graduating high school by the time “Haru No Arashi” came along — of course spring has meant something different to them by then.
The group tackling more emotionally complex material inspired by the season also highlights how far Ebi Chu has come as a music act. “Haru No Arashi” sang about springtime as a period when a teenager transitions into adulthood and begins to confront its messiness. Coming from a song like that, a straightforward approach like “Haruyasumi Moratorium Chugakusei” seems almost too easy, too shallow and a bit passe for a group who’s now all grown up.

Today my parents left Kagoshima for Kyoto via Hiroshima for a stop at the Peace Museum. I felt like I had sent my children off into the world. They made it all the way by themselves! Now I have 3 classes standing between myself and a 2 week holiday in Kyoto and Tokyo. I want to go drink all the Cherry Blossom packaged Asahi cans under the cherry blossoms! SPRING BREAK!
